[1] In the seventh month, in the twenty-first day of the month, Yahweh’s word came by Haggai the prophet, saying,
[2] “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
[3] ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Isn’t it in your eyes as nothing?
[4] Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ says Yahweh. ‘Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ says Yahweh, ‘and work, for I am with you,’ says Yahweh of Armies.
[5] This is the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit lived among you. ‘Don’t be afraid.’
[6] For this is what Yahweh of Armies says: ‘Yet once more, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the dry land;
[7] and I will shake all nations. The treasure of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory, says Yahweh of Armies.
[8] The silver is mine, and the gold is mine,’ says Yahweh of Armies.
[9] ‘The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says Yahweh of Armies; ‘and in this place I will give peace,’ says Yahweh of Armies.”
[10] In the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, Yahweh’s word came by Haggai the prophet, saying,
[11] “Yahweh of Armies says: Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,
[12] ‘If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and with his fold touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any food, will it become holy?’ ” The priests answered, “No.”
[13] Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean by reason of a dead body touch any of these, will it be unclean?” The priests answered, “It will be unclean.”
[14] Then Haggai answered, “ ‘So is this people, and so is this nation before me,’ says Yahweh; ‘and so is every work of their hands. That which they offer there is unclean.
[15] Now, please consider from this day and backward, before a stone was laid on a stone in Yahweh’s temple.
[16] Through all that time, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty, there were only twenty.
[17] I struck you with blight, mildew, and hail in all the work of your hands; yet you didn’t turn to me,’ says Yahweh.
[18] ‘Consider, please, from this day and backward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, since the day that the foundation of Yahweh’s temple was laid, consider it.
[19] Is the seed yet in the barn? Yes, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree haven’t produced. From today I will bless you.’ ”
[20] Yahweh’s word came the second time to Haggai in the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying,
[21] “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, ‘I will shake the heavens and the earth.
[22] I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overthrow the chariots and those who ride in them. The horses and their riders will come down, everyone by the sword of his brother.
[23] In that day, says Yahweh of Armies, I will take you, Zerubbabel my servant, the son of Shealtiel,’ says Yahweh, ‘and will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ says Yahweh of Armies.”

[10] In the four H702 and twentieth H6242 [day] of the ninth H8671 [month], in the second H8147 year H8141 of Darius H1867, came the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 by H3027 Haggai H2292 the prophet H5030, saying H559 (8800),
[11] Thus saith H559 (8804) the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635; Ask H7592 (8798) now the priests H3548 [concerning] the law H8451, saying H559 (8800),
[12] If one H376 bear H5375 (8799) holy H6944 flesh H1320 in the skirt H3671 of his garment H899, and with his skirt H3671 do touch H5060 (8804) bread H3899, or pottage H5138, or wine H3196, or oil H8081, or any meat H3978, shall it be holy H6942 (8799)? And the priests H3548 answered H6030 (8799) and said H559 (8799), No.

[14] Then answered H6030 (8799) Haggai H2292, and said H559 (8799), So [is] this people H5971, and so [is] this nation H1471 before H6440 me, saith H5002 (8803) the LORD H3068; and so [is] every work H4639 of their hands H3027; and that which they offer H7126 (8686) there [is] unclean H2931.
[15] And now, I pray you, consider H7760 (8798) H3824 from this day H3117 and upward H4605, from before H2962 a stone H68 was laid H7760 (8800) upon a stone H68 in the temple H1964 of the LORD H3068:
[16] Since those [days] were, when [one] came H935 (8804) to an heap H6194 of twenty H6242 [measures], there were [but] ten H6235: when [one] came H935 (8804) to the pressfat H3342 for to draw out H2834 (8800) fifty H2572 [vessels] out of the press H6333, there were [but] twenty H6242.
[17] I smote H5221 (8689) you with blasting H7711 and with mildew H3420 and with hail H1259 in all the labours H4639 of your hands H3027; yet ye [turned] not to me, saith H5002 (8803) the LORD H3068.
[18] Consider H7760 (8798) H3824 now from this day H3117 and upward H4605, from the four H702 and twentieth H6242 day H3117 of the ninth H8671 [month, even] from the day H3117 that the foundation H3245 (8795) of the LORD’S H3068 temple H1964 was laid, consider H7760 (8798) H3824 [it].
[19] Is the seed H2233 yet in the barn H4035? yea, as yet the vine H1612, and the fig tree H8384, and the pomegranate H7416, and the olive H2132 tree H6086, hath not brought forth H5375 (8804): from this day H3117 will I bless H1288 (8762) [you].
[20] And again H8145 the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 came unto Haggai H2292 in the four H702 and twentieth H6242 [day] of the month H2320, saying H559 (8800),
[21] Speak H559 (8798) to Zerubbabel H2216, governor H6346 of Judah H3063, saying H559 (8800), I will shake H7493 (8688) the heavens H8064 and the earth H776;
[22] And I will overthrow H2015 (8804) the throne H3678 of kingdoms H4467, and I will destroy H8045 (8689) the strength H2392 of the kingdoms H4467 of the heathen H1471; and I will overthrow H2015 (8804) the chariots H4818, and those that ride H7392 (8802) in them; and the horses H5483 and their riders H7392 (8802) shall come down H3381 (8804), every one H376 by the sword H2719 of his brother H251.
[23] In that day H3117, saith H5002 (8803) the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635, will I take H3947 (8799) thee, O Zerubbabel H2216, my servant H5650, the son H1121 of Shealtiel H7597, saith H5002 (8803) the LORD H3068, and will make H7760 (8804) thee as a signet H2368: for I have chosen H977 (8804) thee, saith H5002 (8803) the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635.

[1] In the seventh month, in the twenty and first of the month, hath a word of Jehovah been by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying:
[2] ‘Speak, I pray thee, unto Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and unto Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest, and unto the remnant of the people, saying:
[3] Who among you hath been left that saw this house in its former honour? And what are ye seeing it now? Is it not, compared with it, as nothing in your eyes?
[4] And now, be strong, O Zerubbabel, An affirmation of Jehovah, And be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest, And be strong, all ye people of the land, An affirmation of Jehovah, And do ye-(for I am with you, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts)-
[5] The thing that I covenanted with you, In your coming forth from Egypt, And My Spirit is remaining in your midst, fear not.
[6] For thus said Jehovah of Hosts: Yet once more-it is a little, And I am shaking the heavens and the earth, And the sea, and the dry land,
[7] And I have shaken all the nations, And they have come to the desire of all the nations, And I have filled this house with honour, Said Jehovah of Hosts.
[8] Mine is the silver, and Mine the gold, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts.
[9] Greater is the honour of this latter house, Than of the former, said Jehovah of Hosts, And in this place do I give peace, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts.’
[10] On the twenty and fourth of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, hath a word of Jehovah been by the hnd of Haggai the prophet, saying:
[11] Thus said Jehovah of Hosts: ‘Ask, I pray thee, the priests of the law, saying:
[12] Lo, one doth carry holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and he hath come with his skirt against the bread, or against the pottage, or against the wine, or against the oil, or against any food-is it holy?’ And the priests answer and say, ‘No.’
[13] And Haggai saith, ‘If the unclean of body doth come against any of these, is it unclean?’ And the priests answer and say, ‘It is unclean.’
[14] And Haggai answereth and saith, ‘So is this people, and so is this nation before Me-an affirmation of Jehovah-and so is every work of their hands, and that which they bring near there-it is unclean.
[15] And now, lay it, I pray you, to your heart, From this day, and onwards, Before the laying of stone to stone in the temple of Jehovah.
[16] From that time one hath come to a heap of twenty, And it hath been ten, He hath come unto the wine-fat to draw out fifty purahs, And it hath been twenty.
[17] I have smitten you with blasting, And with mildew, and with hail- All the work of your hands, And there is none of you with Me, An affirmation of Jehovah.
[18] Set it, I pray you, to your heart, from this day and onwards, from the twenty and fourth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the temple of Jehovah hath been founded, set it to your heart.
[19] Is the seed yet in the barn? And hitherto the vine and the fig, And the pomegranate, and the olive-tree, Have not borne-from this day I bless.’
[20] And there is a word of Jehovah a second time unto Haggai, on the twenty and fourth of the month, saying:
[21] ‘Speak unto Zerubbabel governor of Judah, saying: I am shaking the heavens and the earth,
[22] And have overturned the throne of kingdoms, And I have destroyed the strength of kingdoms of the nations, And overturned chariot and its charioteers, And come down have horses and their riders, Each by the sword of his brother.
[23] In that day-an affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts, I take thee, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant-an affirmation of Jehovah, And have set thee as a signet, for on thee I have fixed, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts!
