David said to Saul, “Your servant was keeping his father’s sheep; and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock,

Saul took him that day, and wouldn’t let him go home to his father’s house any more.

David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my life, or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?”

Jonathan told David, saying, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Now therefore, please take care of yourself in the morning, live in a secret place, and hide yourself.

και απηγγειλεν ιωναθαν τω δαυιδ λεγων σαουλ ζητει θανατωσαι σε φυλαξαι ουν αυριον πρωι και κρυβηθι και καθισον κρυβη

I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will talk with my father about you; and if I see anything, I will tell you.”

Jonathan spoke good of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Don’t let the king sin against his servant, against David; because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you;

David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said to Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? What is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?”

και απεδρα δαυιδ εκ ναυαθ εν ραμα και ερχεται ενωπιον ιωναθαν και ειπεν τι πεποιηκα και τι το αδικημα μου και τι ημαρτηκα ενωπιον του πατρος σου οτι επιζητει την ψυχην μου

He said to him, “Far from it; you will not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small, but that he discloses it to me. Why would my father hide this thing from me? It is not so.”

David swore moreover, and said, “Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he says, ‘Don’t let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved;’ but truly as Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”

Therefore deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of Yahweh with you; but if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?”

και ποιησεις ελεος μετα του δουλου σου οτι εισηγαγες εις διαθηκην κυριου τον δουλον σου μετα σεαυτου και ει εστιν αδικια εν τω δουλω σου θανατωσον με συ και εως του πατρος σου ινα τι ουτως εισαγεις με

Jonathan said, “Far be it from you; for if I should at all know that evil were determined by my father to come on you, then wouldn’t I tell you that?”

Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you roughly?”

Jonathan said to David, “By Yahweh, the God of Israel, when I have sounded out my father about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if there is good toward David, won’t I then send to you and disclose it to you?

και ειπεν ιωναθαν προς δαυιδ κυριος ο θεος ισραηλ οιδεν οτι ανακρινω τον πατερα μου ως αν ο καιρος τρισσως και ιδου αγαθον η περι δαυιδ και ου μη αποστειλω προς σε εις αγρον

Yahweh do so to Jonathan and more also, should it please my father to do you evil, if I don’t disclose it to you and send you away, that you may go in peace. May Yahweh be with you as he has been with my father.

ταδε ποιησαι ο θεος τω ιωναθαν και ταδε προσθειη οτι ανοισω τα κακα επι σε και αποκαλυψω το ωτιον σου και εξαποστελω σε και απελευση εις ειρηνην και εσται κυριος μετα σου καθως ην μετα του πατρος μου

Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?”

And Jonathan H3083 answered H6030 (QalImpf) Saul H7586 his father, H1 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? H4191 (HophImpf) what hath he done? H6213 (QalPerf)

και απεκριθη ιωναθαν τω σαουλ ινα τι αποθνησκει τι πεποιηκεν

Saul cast his spear at him to strike him. By this Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death.

And Saul H7586 cast H2904 (HiphImpf) a javelin H2595 at him to smite H5221 (HiphInf) him: whereby Jonathan H3083 knew H3045 (QalImpf) that it was determined H3617 of his father H1 to slay H4191 (HiphInf) David. H1732

και επηρεν σαουλ το δορυ επι ιωναθαν του θανατωσαι αυτον και εγνω ιωναθαν οτι συντετελεσται η κακια αυτη παρα του πατρος αυτου θανατωσαι τον δαυιδ

So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had treated him shamefully.

και ανεπηδησεν ιωναθαν απο της τραπεζης εν οργη θυμου και ουκ εφαγεν εν τη δευτερα του μηνος αρτον οτι εθραυσθη επι τον δαυιδ οτι συνετελεσεν επ αυτον ο πατηρ αυτου

David therefore departed from there and escaped to Adullam’s cave. When his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him.

Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were in Nob; and they all came to the king.

Have I today begun to inquire of God for him? Be it far from me! Don’t let the king impute anything to his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for your servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.”

η σημερον ηργμαι ερωταν αυτω δια του θεου μηδαμως μη δοτω ο βασιλευς κατα του δουλου αυτου λογον και εφ ολον τον οικον του πατρος μου οτι ουκ ηδει ο δουλος ο σος εν πασιν τουτοις ρημα μικρον η μεγα

He said to him, “Don’t be afraid, for the hand of Saul my father won’t find you; and you will be king over Israel, and I will be next to you; and Saul my father knows that also.”

Moreover, my father, behold, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe and didn’t kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor disobedience in my hand. I have not sinned against you, though you hunt for my life to take it.

They took up Asahel and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was in Bethlehem. Joab and his men went all night, and the day broke on them at Hebron.

Then Abner was very angry about Ishbosheth’s words, and said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show kindness to your father Saul’s house, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and yet you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman!

Let it fall on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house. Let there not fail from the house of Joab one who has a discharge, or who is a leper, or who leans on a staff, or who falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.”

και ειπεν δαυιδ προς μελχολ ενωπιον κυριου ορχησομαι ευλογητος κυριος ος εξελεξατο με υπερ τον πατερα σου και υπερ παντα τον οικον αυτου του καταστησαι με εις ηγουμενον επι τον λαον αυτου επι τον ισραηλ και παιξομαι και ορχησομαι ενωπιον κυριου

When your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your offspring after you, who will proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom.

και εσται εαν πληρωθωσιν αι ημεραι σου και κοιμηθηση μετα των πατερων σου και αναστησω το σπερμα σου μετα σε ος εσται εκ της κοιλιας σου και ετοιμασω την βασιλειαν αυτου

I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men;

David said to him, “Don’t be afraid, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your father. You will eat bread at my table continually.”

και ειπεν αυτω δαυιδ μη φοβου οτι ποιων ποιησω μετα σου ελεος δια ιωναθαν τον πατερα σου και αποκαταστησω σοι παντα αγρον σαουλ πατρος του πατρος σου και συ φαγη αρτον επι της τραπεζης μου δια παντος

David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

και ειπεν δαυιδ ποιησω ελεος μετα αννων υιου ναας ον τροπον εποιησεν ο πατηρ αυτου μετ εμου ελεος και απεστειλεν δαυιδ παρακαλεσαι αυτον εν χειρι των δουλων αυτου περι του πατρος αυτου και παρεγενοντο οι παιδες δαυιδ εις την γην υιων αμμων

But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Hasn’t David sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?”

και ειπον οι αρχοντες υιων αμμων προς αννων τον κυριον αυτων μη παρα το δοξαζειν δαυιδ τον πατερα σου ενωπιον σου οτι απεστειλεν σοι παρακαλουντας αλλ ουχι οπως ερευνησωσιν την πολιν και κατασκοπησωσιν αυτην και του κατασκεψασθαι αυτην απεστειλεν δαυιδ τους παιδας αυτου προς σε

Jonadab said to him, “Lay down on your bed and pretend to be sick. When your father comes to see you, tell him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’ ”

και ειπεν αυτω ιωναδαβ κοιμηθητι επι της κοιτης σου και μαλακισθητι και εισελευσεται ο πατηρ σου του ιδειν σε και ερεις προς αυτον ελθετω δη θημαρ η αδελφη μου και ψωμισατω με και ποιησατω κατ οφθαλμους μου βρωμα οπως ιδω και φαγω εκ των χειρων αυτης

The woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord, O king, may the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house; and may the king and his throne be guiltless.”

και ειπεν η γυνη η θεκωιτις προς τον βασιλεα επ εμε κυριε μου βασιλευ η ανομια και επι τον οικον του πατρος μου και ο βασιλευς και ο θρονος αυτου αθωος

but if you return to the city, and tell Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king. As I have been your father’s servant in time past, so I will now be your servant; then will you defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.’

But if thou return H7725 (QalImpf) to the city, H5892 and say H559 (QalPerf) unto Absalom, H53 I will be thy servant, H5650 O king; H4428 [as] I [have been] thy father’s H1 servant H5650 hitherto, H227 so [will] I now also [be] thy servant: H5650 then mayest thou for me defeat H6565 (HiphPerf) the counsel H6098 of Ahithophel. The king said, “Where is your master’s son?” Ziba said to the king, “Behold, he is staying in Jerusalem; for he said, ‘Today the house of Israel will restore me the kingdom of my father.’ ”

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς και που ο υιος του κυριου σου και ειπεν σιβα προς τον βασιλεα ιδου καθηται εν ιερουσαλημ οτι ειπεν σημερον επιστρεψουσιν μοι ο οικος ισραηλ την βασιλειαν του πατρος μου

Again, whom should I serve? Shouldn’t I serve in the presence of his son? As I have served in your father’s presence, so I will be in your presence.”

και το δευτερον τινι εγω δουλευσω ουχι ενωπιον του υιου αυτου καθαπερ εδουλευσα ενωπιον του πατρος σου ουτως εσομαι ενωπιον σου

Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Go in to your father’s concubines that he has left to keep the house. Then all Israel will hear that you are abhorred by your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strong.”

και ειπεν αχιτοφελ προς αβεσσαλωμ εισελθε προς τας παλλακας του πατρος σου ας κατελιπεν φυλασσειν τον οικον αυτου και ακουσεται πας ισραηλ οτι κατησχυνας τον πατερα σου και ενισχυσουσιν αι χειρες παντων των μετα σου

So they spread a tent for Absalom on the top of the house, and Absalom went in to his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.

και επηξαν την σκηνην τω αβεσσαλωμ επι το δωμα και εισηλθεν αβεσσαλωμ προς τας παλλακας του πατρος αυτου κατ οφθαλμους παντος ισραηλ

Hushai said moreover, “You know your father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are fierce in their minds, like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Your father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

και ειπεν χουσι συ οιδας τον πατερα σου και τους ανδρας αυτου οτι δυνατοι εισιν σφοδρα και καταπικροι τη ψυχη αυτων ως αρκος ητεκνωμενη εν αγρω και ως υς τραχεια εν τω πεδιω και ο πατηρ σου ανηρ πολεμιστης και ου μη καταλυση τον λαον

Even he who is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt; for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and those who are with him are valiant men.

And he also [that is] valiant, H1121 H2428 whose heart H3820 [is] as the heart H3820 of a lion, H738 shall utterly H4549 (NiphInf) melt: H4549 (NiphImpf) for all Israel H3478 knoweth H3045 (QalActPtc) that thy father H1 [is] a mighty man, H1368 and [they] which [be] with him [are] valiant H2428 men. και γε αυτος υιος δυναμεως ου η καρδια καθως η καρδια του λεοντος τηκομενη τακησεται οτι οιδεν πας ισραηλ οτι δυνατος ο πατηρ σου και υιοι δυναμεως οι μετ αυτου

When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, arose, and went home to his city, set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the tomb of his father.

And when Ahithophel H302 saw H7200 (QalPerf) that his counsel H6098 was not followed, H6213 (NiphPerf) he saddled H2280 (QalImpf) [his] ass, H2543 and arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and gat him home H3212 (QalImpf) to his house, H1004 to his city, H5892 and put his household H1004 in order, H6680 (PielImpf) and hanged H2614 (NiphImpf) himself, and died, H4191 (QalImpf) and was buried H6912 (NiphImpf) in the sepulchre H6913 of his father. και αχιτοφελ ειδεν οτι ουκ εγενηθη η βουλη αυτου και επεσαξεν την ονον αυτου και ανεστη και απηλθεν εις τον οικον αυτου εις την πολιν αυτου και ενετειλατο τω οικω αυτου και απηγξατο και απεθανεν και εταφη εν τω ταφω του πατρος αυτου
