When a man takes a wife and marries her, then it shall be, if she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some unseemly thing in her, that he shall write her a certificate of divorce, put it in her hand, and send her out of his house.

When she has departed out of his house, she may go and be another man’s wife.

and the latter man hath hated her, and written for her a writing of divorce, and given it into her hand, and sent her out of his house, or when the latter man dieth, who hath taken her to himself for a wife:

When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out in the army, neither shall he be assigned any business. He shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer his wife whom he has taken.

‘When a man taketh a new wife, he doth not go out into the host, and one doth not pass over unto him for anything; free he is at his own house one year, and hath rejoiced his wife whom he hath taken.

If a man is found stealing any of his brothers of the children of Israel, and he deals with him as a slave, or sells him, then that thief shall die. So you shall remove the evil from among you.

‘When a man is found stealing a person, of his brethren, of the sons of Israel, and hath tyrannized over him, and sold him, then hath that thief died, and thou hast put away the evil thing out of thy midst.

You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you lend shall bring the pledge outside to you.

Thou shalt stand H5975 (QalImpf) abroad, H2351 and the man H376 to whom thou dost lend H5383 (QalActPtc) shall bring out H3318 (HiphImpf) the pledge H5667 abroad H2351 unto thee.

at the outside thou dost stand, and the man on whom thou art lifting it up is bringing out unto thee the pledge at the outside.

If he is a poor man, you shall not sleep with his pledge.

‘And if he is a poor man, thou dost not lie down with his pledge;

The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers. Every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

‘Fathers are not put to death for sons, and sons are not put to death for fathers-each for his own sin, they are put to death.

If there is a controversy between men, and they come to judgment and the judges judge them, then they shall justify the righteous and condemn the wicked.

‘When there is a strife between men, and they have come nigh unto the judgment, and they have judged, and declared righteous the righteous, and declared wrong the wrong-doer,

If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead shall not be married outside to a stranger. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her, and take her as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.

‘When brethren dwell together, and one of them hath died, and hath no son, the wife of the dead is not without to a strange man; her husband’s brother doth go in unto her, and hath taken her to him for a wife, and doth perform the duty of her husband’s brother;

If the man doesn’t want to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up to the gate to the elders, and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to raise up to his brother a name in Israel. He will not perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.”

‘And if the man doth not delight to take his brother’s wife, then hath his brother’s wife gone up to the gate, unto the elders, and said, My husband’s brother is refusing to raise up to his brother a name in Israel; he hath not been willing to perform the duty of my husband’s brother;

then his brother’s wife shall come to him in the presence of the elders, and loose his sandal from off his foot, and spit in his face. She shall answer and say, “So shall it be done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.”

‘And the Levites have answered and said unto every man of Israel-a loud voice:

‘Cursed is the man who maketh a graven and molten image, the abomination of Jehovah, work of the hands of an artificer, and hath put it in a secret place,-and all the people have answered and said, Amen.

You will betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her. You will build a house, and you won’t dwell in it. You will plant a vineyard, and not use its fruit.

The man who is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye will be evil toward his brother, toward the wife whom he loves, and toward the remnant of his children whom he has remaining,

The tender and delicate woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye will be evil toward the husband that she loves, toward her son, toward her daughter,

‘The tender woman in thee, and the delicate, who hath not tried the sole of her foot to place on the ground because of delicateness and because of tenderness-her eye is evil against the husband of her bosom, and against her son, and against her daughter,

All of you stand today in the presence of Yahweh your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, even all the men of Israel,

‘Ye are standing to-day, all of you, before Jehovah your God-your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your authorities-every man of Israel;

lest there should be among you man, woman, family, or tribe whose heart turns away today from Yahweh our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there should be among you a root that produces bitter poison;

lest there be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart is turning to-day from Jehovah our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations, lest there be in you a root fruitful of gall and wormwood:

Yahweh will not pardon him, but then Yahweh’s anger and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book will fall on him, and Yahweh will blot out his name from under the sky.

The Lord H3068 will H14 (QalImpf) not spare H5545 (QalInf) him, but then the anger H639 of the Lord H3068 and his jealousy H7068 shall smoke H6225 (QalImpf) against that man, H376 and all the curses H423 that are written H3789 (QalPasPtc) in this book H5612 shall lie H7257 (QalPerf) upon him, and the Lord H3068 shall blot out H4229 (QalPerf) his name H8034 from under heaven. Jehovah is not willing to be propitious to him, for then doth the anger of Jehovah smoke, also His zeal, against that man, and lain down on him hath all the oath which is written in this book, and Jehovah hath blotted out his name from under the heavens,

Assemble the people, the men and the women and the little ones, and the foreigners who are within your gates, that they may hear, learn, fear Yahweh your God, and observe to do all the words of this law,

‘Assemble the people, the men, and the women, and the infants, and thy sojourner who is within thy gates, so that they hear, and so that they learn, and have feared Jehovah your God, and observed to do all the words of this law;

Outside the sword will bereave, and in the rooms, terror on both young man and virgin, the nursing infant with the gray-haired man.

Without bereave doth the sword, And at the inner-chambers-fear, Both youth and virgin, Suckling with man of grey hair.

This is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.

And this is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the sons of Israel before his death,

About Levi he said, “Your Thummim and your Urim are with your godly one, whom you proved at Massah, with whom you contended at the waters of Meribah.

And of Levi he said:- Thy Thummim and thy Urim are for thy pious one, Whom Thou hast tried in Massah, Thou dost strive with Him at the waters of Meribah;

He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth Peor, but no man knows where his tomb is to this day.

No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not fail you nor forsake you.

‘No man doth station himself before thee all days of thy life; as I have been with Moses, I am with thee, I do not fail thee, nor forsake thee;

Whoever rebels against your commandment, and doesn’t listen to your words in all that you command him shall himself be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”

Whosoever H376 [he be] that doth rebel H4784 (HiphImpf) against thy commandment, H6310 and will not hearken H8085 (QalImpf) unto thy words H1697 in all that thou commandest H6680 (PielImpf) him, he shall be put to death: H4191 (HophImpf) only be strong H2388 (QalImpv) and of a good courage. Any man who doth provoke thy mouth, and doth not hear thy words, in all that thou dost command him, is put to death; only, be strong and courageous.’

Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, including Jericho.” They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and slept there.

And Joshua H3091 the son H1121 of Nun H5126 sent H7971 (QalImpf) out of Shittim H7851 two H8147 men H582 to spy H7270 (PielPtc) secretly, H2791 saying, H559 (QalInf) Go H3212 (QalImpv) view H7200 (QalImpv) the land, H776 even Jericho. H3405 And they went, H3212 (QalImpf) and came H935 (QalImpf) into an harlot’s H2181 (QalActPtc) house, H802 H1004 named H8034 Rahab, H7343 and lodged H7901 (QalImpf) there.

And Joshua son of Nun sendeth from Shittim, two men, spies, silently, saying, ‘Go, see the land-and Jericho;’ and they go and come into the house of a woman, a harlot, and her name is Rahab, and they lie down there.

The king of Jericho was told, “Behold,^§ men of the children of Israel came in here tonight to spy out the land.”

Joshua 2:2 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

And it is told to the king of Jericho, saying, ‘Lo, men have come in hither to-night, from the sons of Israel, to search the land.

Jericho’s king sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered into your house; for they have come to spy out all the land.”

And the king of Jericho sendeth unto Rahab, saying, ‘Bring out the men who are coming in unto thee, who have come into thy house, for to search the whole of the land they have come in.

The woman took the two men and hid them. Then she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I didn’t know where they came from.

And the woman H802 took H3947 (QalImpf) the two H8147 men, H582 and hid H6845 (QalImpf) them, and said H559 (QalImpf) thus, There came H935 (QalPerf) men H582 unto me, but I wist H3045 (QalPerf) not whence H370 they [were]:

And the woman taketh the two men, and hideth them, and saith thus: ‘The men came in unto me, and I have not known whence they are;

About the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, the men went out. Where the men went, I don’t know. Pursue them quickly. You may catch up with them.”

And it came to pass [about the time] of shutting H5462 (QalInf) of the gate, H8179 when it was dark, H2822 that the men H582 went out: H3318 (QalPerf) whither the men H582 went H1980 (QalPerf) I wot H3045 (QalPerf) not: pursue H7291 (QalImpv) after H310 them quickly; H4118 for ye shall overtake H5381 (HiphImpf) them.

and it cometh to pass-the gate is to be shut-in the dark, and the men have gone out; I have not known whither the men have gone; pursue ye, hasten after them, for ye overtake them;’

The men pursued them along the way to the fords of the Jordan River. As soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate.

And the men H582 pursued H7291 (QalPerf) after H310 them the way H1870 to Jordan H3383 unto the fords: H4569 and as soon as they which pursued H7291 (QalActPtc) after H310 them were gone out, H3318 (QalPerf) they shut H5462 (QalPerf) the gate. H8179

And the men have pursued after them the way of the Jordan, by the fords, and the gate they have shut afterwards, when the pursuers have gone out after them.

She said to the men, “I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

And she said H559 (QalImpf) unto the men, H582 I know H3045 (QalPerf) that the Lord H3068 hath given H5414 (QalPerf) you the land, H776 and that your terror H367 is fallen H5307 (QalPerf) upon us, and that all the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of the land H776 faint H4127 (NiphPerf) because H6440 of you.

and she saith unto the men, ‘I have known that Jehovah hath given to you the land, and that your terror hath fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have melted at your presence.

As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, and there wasn’t any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.

And as soon as we had heard H8085 (QalImpf) [these things], our hearts H3824 did melt, H4549 (NiphImpf) neither did there remain H6965 (QalPerf) any more courage H7307 in any man, H376 because H6440 of you: for the Lord H3068 your God, H430 he [is] God H430 in heaven H8064 above, H4605 and in earth H776 beneath.

And we hear, and melt doth our heart, and there hath not stood any more spirit in any man, from your presence, for Jehovah your God, He is God in the heavens above, and on the earth beneath.

The men said to her, “Our life for yours, if you don’t talk about this business of ours; and it shall be, when Yahweh gives us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.”

And the men H582 answered H559 (QalImpf) her, Our life H5315 for yours, H4191 (QalInf) if ye utter H5046 (HiphImpf) not this our business. H1697 And it shall be, when the Lord H3068 hath given H5414 (QalInf) us the land, H776 that we will deal H6213 (QalPerf) kindly H2617 and truly H571 with thee.

And the men say to her, ‘Our soul for yours-to die; if ye declare not this our matter, then it hath been, in Jehovah’s giving to us this land, that we have done with thee kindness and truth.’

The men said to her, “We will be guiltless of this your oath which you’ve made us to swear.

And the men H582 said H559 (QalImpf) unto her, We [will be] blameless H5355 of this thine oath H7621 which thou hast made us swear. H7650 (HiphPerf)

And the men say unto her, ‘We are acquitted of this thine oath which thou hast caused us to swear:

Then the two men returned, descended from the mountain, crossed the river, and came to Joshua the son of Nun. They told him all that had happened to them.

And the two men turn back, and come down from the hill, and pass over, and come in unto Joshua son of Nun, and recount to him all that hath come upon them;

‘Take for you out of the people twelve men, one man-one man out of a tribe;

Then Joshua called the twelve men whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, a man out of every tribe.

And Joshua calleth unto the twelve men whom he prepared out of the sons of Israel, one man-one man out of a tribe;

Joshua said to them, “Cross before the ark of Yahweh your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you pick up a stone and put it on your shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel;

And Joshua H3091 said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, Pass over H5674 (QalImpv) before H6440 the ark H727 of the Lord H3068 your God H430 into the midst H8432 of Jordan, H3383 and take ye up H7311 (HiphImpv) every H259 man H376 of you a stone H68 upon his shoulder, H7926 according unto the number H4557 of the tribes H7626 of the children H1121 of Israel: H3478

and Joshua saith to them, ‘Pass over before the ark of Jehovah your God unto the midst of the Jordan and lift up for you each, one stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel,

This is the reason Joshua circumcised them: all the people who came out of Egypt, who were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness along the way, after they came out of Egypt.

And this is the thing for which Joshua circumciseth them: all the people who are coming out of Egypt, who are males, all the men of war have died in the wilderness, in the way, in their coming out of Egypt,

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness until all the nation, even the men of war who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn’t listen to Yahweh’s voice. Yahweh swore to them that he wouldn’t let them see the land which Yahweh swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

for forty years have the sons of Israel gone in the wilderness, till all the nation of the men of war who are coming out of Egypt, who hearkened not to the voice of Jehovah, to whom Jehovah hath sworn not to show them the land which Jehovah sware to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey, are consumed;

When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man stood in front of him with his sword drawn in his hand. Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our enemies?”

And it cometh to pass in Joshua’s being by Jericho, that he lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, one standing over-against him, and his drawn sword in his hand, and Joshua goeth unto him, and saith to him, ‘Art thou for us or for our adversaries?’

All of your men of war shall march around the city, going around the city once. You shall do this six days.

and ye have compassed the city-all the men of battle-going round the city once; thus thou dost six days;

It shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the city wall will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, every man straight in front of him.”

and it hath been, in the prolongation of the horn of the jubilee, in your hearing the voice of the trumpet, all the people shout-a great shout, and the wall of the city hath fallen under it, and the people have gone up, each over-against him.’

So the people shouted and the priests blew the trumpets. When the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight in front of him, and they took the city.

And the people shout, and blow with the trumpets, and it cometh to pass when the people hear the voice of the trumpet, that the people shout-a great shout, and the wall falleth under it, and the people goeth up into the city, each over-against him, and they capture the city;

They utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword.

And they utterly destroyed H2763 (HiphImpf) all that [was] in the city, H5892 both man H376 and woman, H802 young H5288 and old, H2205 and ox, H7794 and sheep, H7716 and ass, H2543 with the edge H6310 of the sword. H2719

and they devote all that is in the city, from man even unto woman, from young even unto aged, even unto ox, and sheep, and ass, by the mouth of the sword.
