The young lady was very beautiful; and she cherished the king, and served him; but the king didn’t know her intimately.

Adonijah killed sheep, cattle, and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En Rogel; and he called all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants;

και εθυσιασεν αδωνιας προβατα και μοσχους και αρνας μετα λιθου του ζωελεθ ος ην εχομενα της πηγης ρωγηλ και εκαλεσεν παντας τους αδελφους αυτου και παντας τους αδρους ιουδα παιδας του βασιλεως

Go in to King David, and tell him, ‘Didn’t you, my lord the king, swear to your servant, saying, “Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then does Adonijah reign?’

δευρο εισελθε προς τον βασιλεα δαυιδ και ερεις προς αυτον λεγουσα ουχι συ κυριε μου βασιλευ ωμοσας τη δουλη σου λεγων οτι σαλωμων ο υιος σου βασιλευσει μετ εμε και αυτος καθιειται επι του θρονου μου και τι οτι εβασιλευσεν αδωνιας

Behold,^§ while you are still talking there with the king, I will also come in after you and confirm your words.”

Bathsheba went in to the king in his room. The king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was serving the king.

Bathsheba bowed and showed respect to the king. The king said, “What would you like?”

Now, behold, Adonijah reigns; and you, my lord the king, don’t know it.

και νυν ιδου αδωνιας εβασιλευσεν και συ κυριε μου βασιλευ ουκ εγνως

He has slain cattle and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has called all the sons of the king, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the army; but he hasn’t called Solomon your servant.

και εθυσιασεν μοσχους και αρνας και προβατα εις πληθος και εκαλεσεν παντας τους υιους του βασιλεως και αβιαθαρ τον ιερεα και ιωαβ τον αρχοντα της δυναμεως και τον σαλωμων τον δουλον σου ουκ εκαλεσεν

You, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, that you should tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.

And thou, my lord, H113 O king, H4428 the eyes H5869 of all Israel H3478 [are] upon thee, that thou shouldest tell H5046 (HiphInf) them who shall sit H3427 (QalImpf) on the throne H3678 of my lord H113 the king H4428 after H310 him.

και συ κυριε μου βασιλευ οι οφθαλμοι παντος ισραηλ προς σε απαγγειλαι αυτοις τις καθησεται επι του θρονου του κυριου μου του βασιλεως μετ αυτον

Otherwise it will happen, when my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be considered criminals.”

Behold, while she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.

And, lo, while she yet talked H1696 (PielPtc) with the king, H4428 Nathan H5416 the prophet H5030 also came in. H935 (QalPerf)

και ιδου ετι αυτης λαλουσης μετα του βασιλεως και ναθαν ο προφητης ηλθεν

They told the king, saying, “Behold, Nathan the prophet!” When he had come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

For he has gone down today, and has slain cattle, fatlings, and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king’s sons, the captains of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’

Was this thing done by my lord the king, and you haven’t shown to your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”

Is this thing H1697 done H1961 (NiphPerf) by my lord H113 the king, H4428 and thou hast not shewed H3045 (HiphPerf) [it] unto thy servant, H5650 who should sit H3427 (QalImpf) on the throne H3678 of my lord H113 the king H4428 after H310 him?

ει δια του κυριου μου του βασιλεως γεγονεν το ρημα τουτο και ουκ εγνωρισας τω δουλω σου τις καθησεται επι τον θρονον του κυριου μου του βασιλεως μετ αυτον

Then King David answered, “Call Bathsheba in to me.” She came into the king’s presence and stood before the king.

Then king H4428 David H1732 answered H6030 (QalImpf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) Call H7121 (QalImpv) me Bathsheba. H1339 And she came H935 (QalImpf) into the king’s H4428 presence, H6440 and stood H5975 (QalImpf) before H6440 the king. H4428

και απεκριθη δαυιδ και ειπεν καλεσατε μοι την βηρσαβεε και εισηλθεν ενωπιον του βασιλεως και εστη ενωπιον αυτου

The king vowed and said, “As Yahweh lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

και ωμοσεν ο βασιλευς και ειπεν ζη κυριος ος ελυτρωσατο την ψυχην μου εκ πασης θλιψεως

Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth and showed respect to the king, and said, “Let my lord King David live forever!”

King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” They came before the king.

The king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon.

The king H4428 also said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, Take H3947 (QalImpv) with you the servants H5650 of your lord, H113 and cause Solomon H8010 my son H1121 to ride H7392 (HiphPerf) upon mine own mule, H6506 and bring him down H3381 (HiphPerf) to Gihon: H1521

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς αυτοις λαβετε τους δουλους του κυριου υμων μεθ υμων και επιβιβασατε τον υιον μου σαλωμων επι την ημιονον την εμην και καταγαγετε αυτον εις τον γιων

Let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel. Blow the trumpet, and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’

And let Zadok H6659 the priest H3548 and Nathan H5416 the prophet H5030 anoint H4886 (QalPerf) him there king H4428 over Israel: H3478 and blow H8628 (QalPerf) ye with the trumpet, H7782 and say, H559 (QalPerf) God save H2421 (QalImpf) king H4428 Solomon. H8010

και χρισατω αυτον εκει σαδωκ ο ιερευς και ναθαν ο προφητης εις βασιλεα επι ισραηλ και σαλπισατε κερατινη και ερειτε ζητω ο βασιλευς σαλωμων

Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, “Amen. May Yahweh, the God of my lord the king, say so.

And Benaiah H1141 the son H1121 of Jehoiada H3077 answered H6030 (QalImpf) the king, H4428 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Amen: H543 the Lord H3068 God H430 of my lord H113 the king H4428 say H559 (QalImpf) so [too].

και απεκριθη βαναιας υιος ιωδαε τω βασιλει και ειπεν γενοιτο ουτως πιστωσαι κυριος ο θεος του κυριου μου του βασιλεως

As Yahweh has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”

As the Lord H3068 hath been with my lord H113 the king, H4428 even so be he with Solomon, H8010 and make H1431 his throne H3678 greater H1431 (PielImpf) than the throne H3678 of my lord H113 king H4428 David. H1732

καθως ην κυριος μετα του κυριου μου του βασιλεως ουτως ειη μετα σαλωμων και μεγαλυναι τον θρονον αυτου υπερ τον θρονον του κυριου μου του βασιλεως δαυιδ

So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon.

So Zadok H6659 the priest, H3548 and Nathan H5416 the prophet, H5030 and Benaiah H1141 the son H1121 of Jehoiada, H3077 and the Cherethites, H3774 and the Pelethites, H6432 went down, H3381 (QalImpf) and caused Solomon H8010 to ride H7392 (HiphImpf) upon king H4428 David’s H1732 mule, H6506 and brought H3212 (HiphImpf) him to Gihon. H1521

και κατεβη σαδωκ ο ιερευς και ναθαν ο προφητης και βαναιας υιος ιωδαε και ο χερεθθι και ο φελεθθι και επεκαθισαν τον σαλωμων επι την ημιονον του βασιλεως δαυιδ και απηγαγον αυτον εις τον γιων

Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the Tent, and anointed Solomon. They blew the trumpet; and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!”

And Zadok H6659 the priest H3548 took H3947 (QalImpf) an horn H7161 of oil H8081 out of the tabernacle, H168 and anointed H4886 (QalImpf) Solomon. H8010 And they blew H8628 (QalImpf) the trumpet; H7782 and all the people H5971 said, H559 (QalImpf) God save H2421 (QalImpf) king H4428 Solomon. H8010

Jonathan answered Adonijah, “Most certainly our lord King David has made Solomon king.

And Jonathan H3129 answered H6030 (QalImpf) and said H559 (QalImpf) to Adonijah, H138 Verily H61 our lord H113 king H4428 David H1732 hath made Solomon H8010 king. H4427 (HiphPerf)

και απεκριθη ιωναθαν και ειπεν και μαλα ο κυριος ημων ο βασιλευς δαυιδ εβασιλευσεν τον σαλωμων

The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to ride on the king’s mule.

Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon. They have come up from there rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that you have heard.

And Zadok H6659 the priest H3548 and Nathan H5416 the prophet H5030 have anointed H4886 (QalImpf) him king H4428 in Gihon: H1521 and they are come up H5927 (QalImpf) from thence rejoicing, H8056 so that the city H7151 rang again. Moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and make his throne greater than your throne;’ and the king bowed himself on the bed.

And moreover the king’s H4428 servants H5650 came H935 (QalPerf) to bless H1288 (PielInf) our lord H113 king H4428 David, H1732 saying, H559 (QalInf) God H430 make the name H8034 of Solomon H8010 better H3190 (HiphImpf) than thy name, H8034 and make H1431 his throne H3678 greater H1431 (PielImpf) than thy throne. H3678 And the king H4428 bowed H7812 (HithImpf) himself upon the bed. H4904

και εισηλθον οι δουλοι του βασιλεως ευλογησαι τον κυριον ημων τον βασιλεα δαυιδ λεγοντες αγαθυναι ο θεος το ονομα σαλωμων του υιου σου υπερ το ονομα σου και μεγαλυναι τον θρονον αυτου υπερ τον θρονον σου και προσεκυνησεν ο βασιλευς επι την κοιτην αυτου

Also thus said the king, ‘Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, who has given one to sit on my throne today, my eyes even seeing it.’ ”

And also thus said H559 (QalPerf) the king, H4428 Blessed H1288 (QalPasPtc) [be] the Lord H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 which hath given H5414 (QalPerf) [one] to sit H3427 (QalActPtc) on my throne H3678 this day, H3117 mine eyes H5869 even seeing H7200 (QalActPtc) [it].

και γε ουτως ειπεν ο βασιλευς ευλογητος κυριος ο θεος ισραηλ ος εδωκεν σημερον εκ του σπερματος μου καθημενον επι του θρονου μου και οι οφθαλμοι μου βλεπουσιν

Solomon was told, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon; for, behold, he is hanging onto the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not kill his servant with the sword.’ ”

And it was told H5046 (HophImpf) Solomon, H8010 saying, H559 (QalInf) Behold, Adonijah H138 feareth H3372 (QalPerf) king H4428 Solomon: H8010 for, lo, he hath caught hold H270 (QalPerf) on the horns H7161 of the altar, H4196 saying, H559 (QalInf) Let king H4428 Solomon H8010 swear H7650 (NiphImpf) unto me to day H3117 that he will not slay H4191 (HiphImpf) his servant H5650 with the sword. και ανηγγελη τω σαλωμων λεγοντες ιδου αδωνιας εφοβηθη τον βασιλεα σαλωμων και κατεχει των κερατων του θυσιαστηριου λεγων ομοσατω μοι σημερον ο βασιλευς σαλωμων ει ου θανατωσει τον δουλον αυτου εν ρομφαια

So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. He came and bowed down to King Solomon; and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”

He said, “Please speak to Solomon the king (for he will not tell you ‘no’), that he give me Abishag the Shunammite as wife.”

And he said, H559 (QalImpf) Speak, H559 (QalImpv) I pray thee, unto Solomon H8010 the king, H4428 (for he will not say H7725 thee H6440 nay, H7725 (HiphImpf)) that he give H5414 (QalImpf) me Abishag H49 the Shunammite H7767 to wife. H802

και ειπεν αυτη ειπον δη προς σαλωμων τον βασιλεα οτι ουκ αποστρεψει το προσωπον αυτου απο σου και δωσει μοι την αβισακ την σωμανιτιν εις γυναικα

Bathsheba said, “All right. I will speak for you to the king.”

And Bathsheba H1339 said, H559 (QalImpf) Well; H2896 I will speak H1696 (PielImpf) for thee unto the king. H4428

και ειπεν βηρσαβεε καλως εγω λαλησω περι σου τω βασιλει

Bathsheba therefore went to King Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. The king rose up to meet her and bowed himself to her, and sat down on his throne and caused a throne to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.

Bathsheba H1339 therefore went H935 (QalImpf) unto king H4428 Solomon, H8010 to speak H1696 (PielInf) unto him for Adonijah. Then she said, “I ask one small petition of you; don’t deny me.” The king said to her, “Ask on, my mother, for I will not deny you.”

και ειπεν αυτω αιτησιν μιαν μικραν εγω αιτουμαι παρα σου μη αποστρεψης το προσωπον σου και ειπεν αυτη ο βασιλευς αιτησαι μητερ εμη οτι ουκ αποστρεψω σε

King Solomon answered his mother, “Why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also, for he is my elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.”

και απεκριθη σαλωμων ο βασιλευς και ειπεν τη μητρι αυτου και ινα τι συ ητησαι την αβισακ τω αδωνια και αιτησαι αυτω την βασιλειαν οτι ουτος αδελφος μου ο μεγας υπερ εμε και αυτω αβιαθαρ ο ιερευς και αυτω ιωαβ ο υιος σαρουιας ο αρχιστρατηγος εταιρος

King Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell on him, so that he died.

Benaiah came to Yahweh’s Tent, and said to him, “The king says, ‘Come out!’ ” He said, “No; but I will die here.” Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, “This is what Joab said, and this is how he answered me.”

The king said to him, “Do as he has said, and fall on him, and bury him, that you may take away the blood, which Joab shed without cause, from me and from my father’s house.

και ειπεν αυτω ο βασιλευς πορευου και ποιησον αυτω καθως ειρηκεν και ανελε αυτον και θαψεις αυτον και εξαρεις σημερον το αιμα ο δωρεαν εξεχεεν ιωαβ απ εμου και απο του οικου του πατρος μου

The king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his place over the army; and the king put Zadok the priest in the place of Abiathar.

The king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem, and live there, and don’t go anywhere else.

Shimei said to the king, “What you say is good. As my lord the king has said, so will your servant do.” Shimei lived in Jerusalem many days.

At the end of three years, two of Shimei’s slaves ran away to Achish, son of Maacah, king of Gath. They told Shimei, saying, “Behold, your slaves are in Gath.”

και εγενηθη μετα τρια ετη και απεδρασαν δυο δουλοι του σεμει προς αγχους υιον μααχα βασιλεα γεθ και απηγγελη τω σεμει λεγοντες ιδου οι δουλοι σου εν γεθ

The king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, “Didn’t I adjure you by Yahweh and warn you, saying, ‘Know for certain that on the day you go out and walk anywhere else, you shall surely die’? You said to me, ‘The saying that I have heard is good.’

And the king H4428 sent H7971 (QalImpf) and called H7121 (QalImpf) for Shimei, H8096 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Did I not make thee to swear H7650 (HiphPerf) by the Lord, H3068 and protested H5749 (HiphImpf) unto thee, saying, H559 (QalInf) Know H3045 (QalImpf) for a certain, H3045 (QalInf) on the day H3117 thou goest out, H3318 (QalInf) and walkest H1980 (QalPerf) abroad any whither, H575 that thou shalt surely H4191 (QalInf) die? H4191 (QalImpf) and thou saidst H559 (QalImpf) unto me, The word H1697 [that] I have heard H8085 (QalPerf) [is] good. H2896

και απεστειλεν ο βασιλευς και εκαλεσεν τον σεμει και ειπεν προς αυτον ουχι ωρκισα σε κατα του κυριου και επεμαρτυραμην σοι λεγων εν η αν ημερα εξελθης εξ ιερουσαλημ και πορευθης εις δεξια η εις αριστερα γινωσκων γνωση οτι θανατω αποθανη

The king said moreover to Shimei, “You know in your heart all the wickedness that you did to David my father. Therefore Yahweh will return your wickedness on your own head.

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς προς σεμει συ οιδας πασαν την κακιαν σου ην εγνω η καρδια σου α εποιησας τω δαυιδ τω πατρι μου και ανταπεδωκεν κυριος την κακιαν σου εις κεφαλην σου
