Yahweh said to Samuel, “Behold, I will do a thing in Israel at which both the ears of everyone who hears it will tingle.

Then Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son!” He said, “Here I am.”

When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for God’s ark. When the man came into the city and told about it, all the city cried out.

When the people of Ashdod arose early on the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before Yahweh’s ark. They took Dagon and set him in his place again.

And when they of Ashdod H796 arose early H7925 (HiphImpf) on the morrow, H4283 behold, Dagon H1712 was fallen H5307 (QalActPtc) upon his face H6440 to the earth H776 before H6440 the ark H727 of the Lord. The servant said to him, “Behold now, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor. All that he says surely happens. Now let’s go there. Perhaps he can tell us which way to go.”

Then Saul said to his servant, “But behold, if we go, what should we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our sacks, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”

The servant answered Saul again and said, “Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel° of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.”

1 Samuel 9:8 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces, so ¹⁄₄ shekel would be a small coin of about 2.5 grams.

When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! He will have authority over my people.”
