They said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let’s make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth.”

So Yahweh scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city.

Abraham said, “Because I thought, ‘Surely the fear of God is not in this place. They will kill me for my wife’s sake.’

For Yahweh had closed up tight all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

The thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight on account of his son.

God said to Abraham, “Don’t let it be grievous in your sight because of the boy, and because of your servant. In all that Sarah says to you, listen to her voice. For your offspring will be named through Isaac.

Abraham complained to Abimelech because of a water well, which Abimelech’s servants had violently taken away.

και ειπεν ησαυ τω ιακωβ γευσον με απο του εψεματος του πυρρου τουτου οτι εκλειπω δια τουτο εκληθη το ονομα αυτου εδωμ

The men of the place asked him about his wife. He said, “She is my sister,” for he was afraid to say, “My wife”, lest, he thought, “the men of the place might kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to look at.”

επηρωτησαν δε οι ανδρες του τοπου περι ρεβεκκας της γυναικος αυτου και ειπεν αδελφη μου εστιν εφοβηθη γαρ ειπειν οτι γυνη μου εστιν μηποτε αποκτεινωσιν αυτον οι ανδρες του τοπου περι ρεβεκκας οτι ωραια τη οψει ην

Abimelech called Isaac, and said, “Behold, surely she is your wife. Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die because of her.’ ”

And Abimelech H40 called H7121 (QalImpf) Isaac, H3327 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Behold, of a surety H389 she [is] thy wife: H802 and how saidst H559 (QalPerf) thou, She [is] my sister? εκαλεσεν δε αβιμελεχ τον ισαακ και ειπεν αυτω αρα γε γυνη σου εστιν τι οτι ειπας αδελφη μου εστιν ειπεν δε αυτω ισαακ ειπα γαρ μηποτε αποθανω δι αυτην

They dug another well, and they argued over that, also. So he called its name Sitnah.°

Genesis 26:21 “Sitnah” means “hostility”.

And they digged H2658 (QalImpf) another H312 well, H875 and strove H7378 (QalImpf) for that also: and he called H7121 (QalImpf) the name of it H8034 Sitnah. H7856

απαρας δε ισαακ εκειθεν ωρυξεν φρεαρ ετερον εκρινοντο δε και περι εκεινου και επωνομασεν το ονομα αυτου εχθρια

He left that place, and dug another well. They didn’t argue over that one. So he called it Rehoboth.° He said, “For now Yahweh has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”

Genesis 26:22 “Rehoboth” means “broad places”.

And he removed H6275 (HiphImpf) from thence, and digged H2658 (QalImpf) another H312 well; H875 and for that they strove H7378 (QalPerf) not: and he called H7121 (QalImpf) the name of it H8034 Rehoboth; H7344 and he said, H559 (QalImpf) For now H6258 the Lord H3068 hath made room H7337 (HiphPerf) for us, and we shall be fruitful H6509 (QalPerf) in the land. H776

απαρας δε εκειθεν ωρυξεν φρεαρ ετερον και ουκ εμαχεσαντο περι αυτου και επωνομασεν το ονομα αυτου ευρυχωρια λεγων διοτι νυν επλατυνεν κυριος ημιν και ηυξησεν ημας επι της γης

The same day, Isaac’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.”

And it came to pass the same day, H3117 that Isaac’s H3327 servants H5650 came, H935 (QalImpf) and told H5046 (HiphImpf) him concerning H182 the well H875 which they had digged, H2658 (QalPerf) and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, We have found H4672 (QalPerf) water. H4325

εγενετο δε εν τη ημερα εκεινη και παραγενομενοι οι παιδες ισαακ απηγγειλαν αυτω περι του φρεατος ου ωρυξαν και ειπαν ουχ ευρομεν υδωρ

He called it “Shibah”.° Therefore the name of the city is “Beersheba”° to this day.

Genesis 26:33a Shibah means “oath” or “seven”.
Genesis 26:33b Beersheba means “well of the oath” or “well of the seven”

And he called H7121 (QalImpf) it Shebah: H7656 therefore the name H8034 of the city H5892 [is] Beersheba H884 unto this day. H3117

και εκαλεσεν αυτο ορκος δια τουτο ονομα τη πολει φρεαρ ορκου εως της σημερον ημερας

Isaac his father answered him, “Behold, your dwelling will be of the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of the sky from above.

And Isaac H3327 his father H1 answered H6030 (QalImpf) and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Behold, thy dwelling H4186 shall be the fatness H4924 of the earth, H776 and of the dew H2919 of heaven H8064 from above; H5920

αποκριθεις δε ισαακ ο πατηρ αυτου ειπεν αυτω ιδου απο της πιοτητος της γης εσται η κατοικησις σου και απο της δροσου του ουρανου ανωθεν

Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him. Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand. Then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
