God’s anger burned because he went; and Yahweh’s angel placed himself in the way as an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

And God’s H430 anger H639 was kindled H2734 (QalImpf) because he went: H1980 (QalActPtc) and the angel H4397 of the Lord H3068 stood H3320 (HithImpf) in the way H1870 for an adversary H7854 against him. Now he was riding H7392 (QalActPtc) upon his ass, H860 and his two H8147 servants H5288 were with him.

Yahweh’s angel said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out as an adversary, because your way is perverse before me.

But now Yahweh my God has given me rest on every side. There is no enemy and no evil occurrence.

Yahweh raised up an adversary to Solomon: Hadad the Edomite. He was one of the king’s offspring in Edom.

God raised up an adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his lord, Hadadezer king of Zobah.

He was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, in addition to the mischief of Hadad. He abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.

Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to take a census of Israel.

And Satan H7854 stood up H5975 (QalImpf) against Israel, H3478 and provoked H5496 (HiphImpf) David H1732 to number H4487 (QalInf) Israel. H3478

και εστη διαβολος εν τω ισραηλ και επεσεισεν τον δαυιδ του αριθμησαι τον ισραηλ

Now on the day when God’s sons came to present themselves before Yahweh,^§ Satan also came among them.

Job 1:6 “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “Lord” (all caps) in other translations.

Now there was a day H3117 when the sons H1121 of God H430 came H935 (QalImpf) to present H3320 (HithInf) themselves before the Lord, H3068 and Satan^§ H7854 came H935 (QalImpf) also among H8432 them.^§

Yahweh said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”

Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Satan, H7854 Hast thou considered^§ H7760 (QalPerf) H3820 my servant H5650 Job, H347 that there is none like him in the earth, H776 a perfect H8535 and an upright H3477 man, H376 one that feareth H3373 God, H430 and escheweth H5493 (QalActPtc) evil? Job 1:8 Heb. hast thou set thy heart on

και ειπεν αυτω ο κυριος προσεσχες τη διανοια σου κατα του παιδος μου ιωβ οτι ουκ εστιν κατ αυτον των επι της γης ανθρωπος αμεμπτος αληθινος θεοσεβης απεχομενος απο παντος πονηρου πραγματος

Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?

Then Satan H7854 answered H6030 (QalImpf) the Lord, H3068 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Doth Job H347 fear H3372 (QalPerf) God H430 for nought? H2600

απεκριθη δε ο διαβολος και ειπεν εναντιον του κυριου μη δωρεαν σεβεται ιωβ τον θεον

Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold,^§ all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don’t stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh.

Job 1:12 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Satan, H7854 Behold, all that he hath is in thy power;^§ H3027 only upon himself put not forth H7971 (QalImpf) thine hand. H3027 So Satan H7854 went forth H3318 (QalImpf) from the presence H6440 of the Lord. H3068

Again, on the day when God’s sons came to present themselves before Yahweh, Satan came also among them to present himself before Yahweh.

Yahweh said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”

και ειπεν ο κυριος τω διαβολω ποθεν συ ερχη τοτε ειπεν ο διαβολος ενωπιον του κυριου διαπορευθεις την υπ ουρανον και εμπεριπατησας την συμπασαν παρειμι

Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil. He still maintains his integrity, although you incited me against him, to ruin him without cause.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Satan, H7854 Hast thou H7760 (QalPerf) considered H3820 my servant H5650 Job, H347 that there is none like him in the earth, H776 a perfect H8535 and an upright H3477 man, H376 one that feareth H3373 God, H430 and escheweth H5493 (QalActPtc) evil? H7451 and still he holdeth fast H2388 (HiphPtc) his integrity, H8538 although thou movedst H5496 (HiphImpf) me against him, to destroy H1104 (PielInf) him^§ without cause. H2600

Job 2:3 Heb. to swallow him up

ειπεν δε ο κυριος προς τον διαβολον προσεσχες ουν τω θεραποντι μου ιωβ οτι ουκ εστιν κατ αυτον των επι της γης ανθρωπος ακακος αληθινος αμεμπτος θεοσεβης απεχομενος απο παντος κακου ετι δε εχεται ακακιας συ δε ειπας τα υπαρχοντα αυτου δια κενης απολεσαι

Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “Skin for skin. Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life.

And Satan H7854 answered H6030 (QalImpf) the Lord, H3068 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Skin H5785 for skin, H5785 yea, all that a man H376 hath will he give H5414 (QalImpf) for his life. H5315

υπολαβων δε ο διαβολος ειπεν τω κυριω δερμα υπερ δερματος οσα υπαρχει ανθρωπω υπερ της ψυχης αυτου εκτεισει

Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand. Only spare his life.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Satan, H7854 Behold, he is in thine hand; H3027 but save^§ H8104 (QalImpv) his life. H5315

Job 2:6 Or, only

ειπεν δε ο κυριος τω διαβολω ιδου παραδιδωμι σοι αυτον μονον την ψυχην αυτου διαφυλαξον

So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh, and struck Job with painful sores from the sole of his foot to his head.

Set a wicked man over him. Let an adversary stand at his right hand.

He showed me Joshua the high priest standing before Yahweh’s angel, and Satan standing at his right hand to be his adversary.
