For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by the sons of Korah.

Hear this, all you peoples.
Listen, all you inhabitants of the world,
[2] both low and high,
rich and poor together.
[3] My mouth will speak words of wisdom.
My heart will utter understanding.
[4] I will incline my ear to a proverb.
I will solve my riddle on the harp.
[5] Why should I fear in the days of evil,
when iniquity at my heels surrounds me?
[6] Those who trust in their wealth,
and boast in the multitude of their riches—
[7] none of them can by any means redeem his brother,
nor give God a ransom for him.
[8] For the redemption of their life is costly,
no payment is ever enough,
[9] that he should live on forever,
that he should not see corruption.
[10] For he sees that wise men die;
likewise the fool and the senseless perish,
and leave their wealth to others.
[11] Their inward thought is that their houses will endure forever,
and their dwelling places to all generations.
They name their lands after themselves.
[12] But man, despite his riches, doesn’t endure.
He is like the animals that perish.
[13] This is the destiny of those who are foolish,
and of those who approve their sayings.
Selah.
[14] They are appointed as a flock for Sheol.
Death shall be their shepherd.
The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning.
Their beauty shall decay in Sheol,
far from their mansion.
[15] But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol,
for he will receive me.
Selah.
[16] Don’t be afraid when a man is made rich,
when the glory of his house is increased;
[17] for when he dies he will carry nothing away.
His glory won’t descend after him.
[18] Though while he lived he blessed his soul—
and men praise you when you do well for yourself—
[19] he shall go to the generation of his fathers.
They shall never see the light.
[20] A man who has riches without understanding,
is like the animals that perish.

To the chief Musician,H5329(PielPtc) A PsalmH4210 for the sonsH1121 of Korah.H7141

HearH8085(QalImpv) this, all [ye] people;H5971 give ear,H238(HiphImpv) all [ye] inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of the world:H2465
[2] Both lowH1121 and high,H1121 richH6223 and poor,H34 together.H3162 [3] My mouthH6310 shall speakH1696(PielImpf) of wisdom;H2454 and the meditationH1900 of my heartH3820 [shall be] of understanding.H8394 [4] I will inclineH5186(HiphImpf) mine earH241 to a parable:H4912 I will openH6605(QalImpf) my dark sayingH2420 upon the harp.H3658 [5] Wherefore should I fearH3372(QalImpf) in the daysH3117 of evil,H7451 [when] the iniquityH5771 of my heelsH6120 shall compassH5437(QalImpf) me about? [6] They that trustH982(QalActPtc) in their wealth,H2428 and boastH1984(HithImpf) themselves in the multitudeH7230 of their riches;H6239 [7] None [of them] canH376 by any meansH6299(QalInf) redeemH6299(QalImpf) his brother,H251 nor giveH5414(QalImpf) to GodH430 a ransomH3724 for him: [8] (For the redemptionH6306 of their soulH5315 [is] precious,H3365(QalImpf) and it ceasethH2308(QalPerf) for ever:H5769) [9] That he should still liveH2421(QalImpf) for ever,H5331 [and] not seeH7200(QalImpf) corruption.H7845 [10] For he seethH7200(QalImpf) [that] wise menH2450 die,H4191(QalImpf) likewiseH3162 the foolH3684 and the brutish personH1198 perish,H6(QalImpf) and leaveH5800(QalPerf) their wealthH2428 to others.H312 [11] Their inwardH7130 thought [is, that] their housesH1004 [shall continue] for ever,H5769 [and] their dwellingH4908 places to allH1755 generations;H1755 they callH7121(QalPerf) [their] landsH127 after their own names.H8034 [12] Nevertheless manH120 [being] in honourH3366 abidethH3885(QalImpf) not: he is likeH4911(NiphPerf) the beastsH929 [that] perish.H1820(NiphPerf) [13] This their wayH1870 [is] their folly:H3689 yet their posterityH310 approveH7521(QalImpf) their sayings.H6310 Selah.H5542 [14] Like sheepH6629 they are laidH8371(QalPerf) in the grave;H7585 deathH4194 shall feedH7462(QalImpf) on them; and the uprightH3477 shall have dominionH7287(QalImpf) over them in the morning;H1242 and their beautyH6697(Qere) shall consumeH1086(PielInf) in the graveH7585 from their dwelling.H2073 [15] But GodH430 will redeemH6299(QalImpf) my soulH5315 from the powerH3027 of the grave:H7585 for he shall receiveH3947(QalImpf) me. Selah.H5542 [16] Be not thou afraidH3372(QalImpf) when oneH376 is made rich,H6238(HiphImpf) when the gloryH3519 of his houseH1004 is increased;H7235(QalImpf) [17] For when he diethH4194 he shall carry nothing away:H3947(QalImpf) his gloryH3519 shall not descendH3381(QalImpf) afterH310 him. [18] Though while he livedH2416 he blessedH1288(PielImpf) his soul:H5315 and [men] will praiseH3034(HiphImpf) thee, when thou doest wellH3190(HiphImpf) to thyself. [19] He shall goH935(QalImpf) to the generationH1755 of his fathers;H1 they shall neverH3808 seeH7200(QalImpf) light.H216 [20] ManH120 [that is] in honour,H3366 and understandethH995(QalImpf) not, is likeH4911(NiphPerf) the beastsH929 [that] perish.H1820(NiphPerf)
