Then Amaziah king of Judah consulted his advisers, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come! Let’s look one another in the face.”

Now from the time that Amaziah turned away from following Yahweh, they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem. He fled to Lachish, but they sent after him to Lachish and killed him there.

και μετα ταυτα απεστειλεν σενναχηριμ βασιλευς ασσυριων τους παιδας αυτου επι ιερουσαλημ και αυτος επι λαχις και πασα η στρατια μετ αυτου και απεστειλεν προς εζεκιαν βασιλεα ιουδα και προς παντα ιουδαν τον εν ιερουσαλημ λεγων

Yahweh sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valor, the leaders, and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. When he had come into the house of his god, those who came out of his own body° killed him there with the sword.

But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Yahweh, you shall tell him this, ‘Yahweh, the God of Israel says: “About the words which you have heard,

και επι βασιλεα ιουδα τον αποστειλαντα υμας του ζητησαι τον κυριον ουτως ερειτε αυτω ουτως λεγει κυριος ο θεος ισραηλ τους λογους ους ηκουσας

Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

Yahweh, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place;

και απεστειλα τω ελεαζαρ τω αριηλ τω σαμαια και τω αλωναμ και τω ιαριβ και τω ελναθαν και τω ναθαν και τω ζαχαρια και τω μεσουλαμ ανδρας και τω ιωαριβ και τω ελναθαν συνιοντας

I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you would send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may build it.”

The king said to me (the queen was also sitting by him), “How long will your journey be? When will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me, and I set a time for him.

Then I came to the governors beyond the River, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.

και απεστειλεν σαναβαλλατ και γησαμ προς με λεγων δευρο και συναχθωμεν επι το αυτο εν ταις κωμαις εν πεδιω ωνω και αυτοι λογιζομενοι ποιησαι μοι πονηριαν

I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I can’t come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and come down to you?”

και απεστειλα επ αυτους αγγελους λεγων εργον μεγα εγω ποιω και ου δυνησομαι καταβηναι μηποτε καταπαυση το εργον ως αν τελειωσω αυτο καταβησομαι προς υμας

They sent to me four times like this; and I answered them the same way.

I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him, but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.”

All the people went their way to eat, to drink, to send portions, and to celebrate, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

Then I testified against them, and said to them, “Why do you stay around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they didn’t come on the Sabbath.

και διεμαρτυραμην εν αυτοις και ειπα προς αυτους δια τι υμεις αυλιζεσθε απεναντι του τειχους εαν δευτερωσητε εκτενω την χειρα μου εν υμιν απο του καιρου εκεινου ουκ ηλθοσαν εν σαββατω

for he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language, that every man should rule his own house, speaking in the language of his own people.

But he scorned the thought of laying hands on Mordecai alone, for they had made known to him Mordecai’s people. Therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews who were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even Mordecai’s people.

Letters were sent by couriers into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to plunder their possessions.

και απεσταλη δια βιβλιαφορων εις την αρταξερξου βασιλειαν αφανισαι το γενος των ιουδαιων εν ημερα μια μηνος δωδεκατου ος εστιν αδαρ και διαρπασαι τα υπαρχοντα αυτων

Esther’s maidens and her eunuchs came and told her this, and the queen was exceedingly grieved. She sent clothing to Mordecai, to replace his sackcloth, but he didn’t receive it.

Nevertheless Haman restrained himself, and went home. There, he sent and called for his friends and Zeresh his wife.

ευρεν δε τα γραμματα τα γραφεντα περι μαρδοχαιου ως απηγγειλεν τω βασιλει περι των δυο ευνουχων του βασιλεως εν τω φυλασσειν αυτους και ζητησαι επιβαλειν τας χειρας αρταξερξη

Then King Ahasuerus said to Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, “See, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows because he laid his hand on the Jews.

He wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus, and sealed it with the king’s ring, and sent letters by courier on horseback, riding on royal horses that were bred from swift steeds.

εγραφη δε δια του βασιλεως και εσφραγισθη τω δακτυλιω αυτου και εξαπεστειλαν τα γραμματα δια βιβλιαφορων

the Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, to lay hands on those who wanted to harm them. No one could withstand them, because the fear of them had fallen on all the people.

the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy, but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.

The Jews who were in Susa gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and killed three hundred men in Susa; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.

For the Jews H3064 that [were] in Shushan H7800 gathered themselves together H6950 (NiphImpf) on the fourteenth H702 H6240 day H3117 also of the month H2320 Adar, H143 and slew H2026 (QalImpf) three H7969 hundred H3967 men H376 at Shushan; H7800 but on the prey H961 they laid H7971 (QalPerf) not their hand. και συνηχθησαν οι ιουδαιοι εν σουσοις τη τεσσαρεσκαιδεκατη του αδαρ και απεκτειναν ανδρας τριακοσιους και ουδεν διηρπασαν

The other Jews who were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together, defended their lives, had rest from their enemies, and killed seventy-five thousand of those who hated them; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.

But the other H7605 Jews H3064 that [were] in the king’s H4428 provinces H4082 gathered themselves together, H6950 (NiphPerf) and stood H5975 (QalInf) for their lives, H5315 and had rest H5118 from their enemies, H341 (QalActPtc) and slew H2026 (QalInf) of their foes H8130 (QalActPtc) seventy H7657 and five H2568 thousand, H505 but they laid H7971 (QalPerf) not their hands H3027 on the prey, H961

οι δε λοιποι των ιουδαιων οι εν τη βασιλεια συνηχθησαν και εαυτοις εβοηθουν και ανεπαυσαντο απο των πολεμιων απωλεσαν γαρ αυτων μυριους πεντακισχιλιους τη τρισκαιδεκατη του αδαρ και ουδεν διηρπασαν
