Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp to Gilgal.

Yahweh confused Sisera, all his chariots, and all his army, with the edge of the sword before Barak. Sisera abandoned his chariot and fled away on his feet.

Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. Midian’s camp was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

But if you are afraid to go down, go with Purah your servant down to the camp.

ει δε φοβη συ καταβηναι καταβηθι συ και φαρα το παιδαριον σου εις την παρεμβολην

You will hear what they say; and afterward your hands will be strengthened to go down into the camp.” Then went he down with Purah his servant to the outermost part of the armed men who were in the camp.

When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his fellow. He said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream; and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.”

His fellow answered, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has delivered Midian into his hand, with all the army.”

It was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. Then he returned into the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for Yahweh has delivered the army of Midian into your hand!”

And it was [so], when Gideon H1439 heard H8085 (QalInf) the telling H4557 of the dream, H2472 and the interpretation H7667 thereof, that he worshipped, H7812 (HithImpf) and returned H7725 (QalImpf) into the host H4264 of Israel, H3478 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Arise; H6965 (QalImpv) for the Lord H3068 hath delivered H5414 (QalPerf) into your hand H3027 the host H4264 of Midian. και εγενετο ως ηκουσεν γεδεων την διηγησιν του ενυπνιου και την συγκρισιν αυτου και προσεκυνησεν κυριον και επεστρεψεν εις την παρεμβολην ισραηλ και ειπεν αναστητε οτι παρεδωκεν κυριος εν χερσιν υμων την παρεμβολην μαδιαμν

He said to them, “Watch me, and do likewise. Behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so you shall do.

και ειπεν προς αυτους απ εμου οψεσθε και ουτως ποιησετε και ιδου εγω εισπορευομαι εν μεσω της παρεμβολης και εσται ως εαν ποιησω ουτως ποιησετε

When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and shout, ‘For Yahweh and for Gideon!’ ”

και σαλπιω τη κερατινη εγω και παντες οι μετ εμου και σαλπιειτε ταις κερατιναις και υμεις κυκλω της παρεμβολης και ερειτε τω κυριω και τω γεδεων

So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch. Then they blew the trumpets and broke in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.

They each stood in his place around the camp, and all the army ran; and they shouted, and put them to flight.

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their armies with them, about fifteen thousand men, all who were left of all the army of the children of the east; for there fell one hundred twenty thousand men who drew sword.

Gideon went up by the way of those who lived in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and struck the army; for the army felt secure.

And Gideon H1439 went up H5927 (QalImpf) by the way H1870 of them that dwelt H7931 (QalPasPtc) in tents H168 on the east H6924 of Nobah H5025 and Jogbehah, H3011 and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) the host: H4264 for the host H4264 was secure. H983

Zebah and Zalmunna fled and he pursued them. He took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and confused all the army.

And when Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 fled, H5127 (QalImpf) he pursued H7291 (QalImpf) after H310 them, and took H3920 (QalImpf) the two H8147 kings H4428 of Midian, H4080 Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna, H6759 and discomfited H2729 (HiphPerf) all the host. H4264

και εφυγεν ζεβεε και σαλμανα και εδιωξεν οπισω αυτων και εκρατησεν τους δυο βασιλεις μαδιαμ τον ζεβεε και τον σαλμανα και πασαν την παρεμβολην αυτων εξετριψεν

Yahweh’s Spirit began to move him in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

And the Spirit H7307 of the Lord H3068 began H2490 (HiphImpf) to move him at times H6470 (QalInf) in the camp H4264 of Dan H1835 between Zorah H6881 and Eshtaol. H847

και ηρξατο πνευμα κυριου συμπορευεσθαι αυτω εν παρεμβολη δαν ανα μεσον σαραα και ανα μεσον εσθαολ

They said, “What one is there of the tribes of Israel who didn’t come up to Yahweh to Mizpah?” Behold, no one came from Jabesh Gilead to the camp to the assembly.

They found among the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead four hundred young virgins who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

When the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has Yahweh defeated us today before the Philistines? Let’s get the ark of Yahweh’s covenant out of Shiloh and bring it to us, that it may come among us and save us out of the hand of our enemies.”

And when the people H5971 were come H935 (QalImpf) into the camp, H4264 the elders H2205 of Israel H3478 said, H559 (QalImpf) Wherefore hath the Lord H3068 smitten H5062 (QalPerf) us to day H3117 before H6440 the Philistines? When the ark of Yahweh’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth resounded.

When the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” They understood that Yahweh’s ark had come into the camp.

The Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp.” They said, “Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing before.

On the next day, Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the middle of the camp in the morning watch, and struck the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who remained were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

The raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned to the way that leads to Ophrah, to the land of Shual;

And the spoilers H7843 (HiphPtc) came out H3318 (QalImpf) of the camp H4264 of the Philistines H6430 in three H7969 companies: H7218 one H259 company H7218 turned H6437 (QalImpf) unto the way H1870 [that leadeth to] Ophrah, H6084 unto the land H776 of Shual: H7777

και εξηλθεν διαφθειρων εξ αγρου αλλοφυλων τρισιν αρχαις η αρχη η μια επιβλεπουσα οδον γοφερα επι γην σωγαλ

There was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people; the garrison and the raiders also trembled; and the earth quaked, so there was an exceedingly great trembling.

While Saul talked to the priest, the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased; and Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand!”

και εγενηθη ως ελαλει σαουλ προς τον ιερεα και ο ηχος εν τη παρεμβολη των αλλοφυλων επορευετο πορευομενος και επληθυνεν και ειπεν σαουλ προς τον ιερεα συναγαγε τας χειρας σου

Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistines before and who went up with them into the camp from all around, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

Moreover the Hebrews H5680 [that] were with the Philistines H6430 before H865 that time, H8032 which went up H5927 (QalPerf) with them into the camp H4264 [from the country] round about, H5439 even they also [turned] to be with the Israelites H3478 that [were] with Saul H7586 and Jonathan. H3129

Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle; and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephesdammim.

και συναγουσιν αλλοφυλοι τας παρεμβολας αυτων εις πολεμον και συναγονται εις σοκχωθ της ιουδαιας και παρεμβαλλουσιν ανα μεσον σοκχωθ και ανα μεσον αζηκα εν εφερμεμ

A champion out of the camp of the Philistines named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span° went out.

A span is the length from the tip of a man’s thumb to the tip of his little finger when his hand is stretched out (about half a cubit, or 9 inches, or 22.8 cm.) Therefore, Goliath was about 9 feet and 9 inches or 2.97 meters tall.

και εξηλθεν ανηρ δυνατος εκ της παραταξεως των αλλοφυλων γολιαθ ονομα αυτω εκ γεθ υψος αυτου τεσσαρων πηχεων και σπιθαμης

Jesse said to David his son, “Now take for your brothers an ephah° of this parched grain and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers;

Today, Yahweh will deliver you into my hand. I will strike you and take your head from off you. I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines today to the birds of the sky and to the wild animals of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,

και αποκλεισει σε κυριος σημερον εις την χειρα μου και αποκτενω σε και αφελω την κεφαλην σου απο σου και δωσω τα κωλα σου και τα κωλα παρεμβολης αλλοφυλων εν ταυτη τη ημερα τοις πετεινοις του ουρανου και τοις θηριοις της γης και γνωσεται πασα η γη οτι εστιν θεος εν ισραηλ

The children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.

And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 returned H7725 (QalImpf) from chasing H1814 (QalInf) after H310 the Philistines, H6430 and they spoiled H8155 (QalImpf) their tents. H4264

και ανεστρεψαν ανδρες ισραηλ εκκλινοντες οπισω των αλλοφυλων και κατεπατουν τας παρεμβολας αυτων

Then David answered and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother of Joab, saying, “Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp?” Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”

και απεκριθη δαυιδ και ειπεν προς αχιμελεχ τον χετταιον και προς αβεσσα υιον σαρουιας αδελφον ιωαβ λεγων τις εισελευσεται μετ εμου προς σαουλ εις την παρεμβολην και ειπεν αβεσσα εγω εισελευσομαι μετα σου

In those days, the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. Achish said to David, “Know assuredly that you will go out with me in the army, you and your men.”

And it came to pass in those days, H3117 that the Philistines H6430 gathered H6908 their armies H4264 together H6908 (QalImpf) for warfare, H6635 to fight H3898 (NiphInf) with Israel. και εγενηθη εν ταις ημεραις εκειναις και συναθροιζονται αλλοφυλοι εν ταις παρεμβολαις αυτων εξελθειν πολεμειν μετα ισραηλ και ειπεν αγχους προς δαυιδ γινωσκων γνωσει οτι μετ εμου εξελευσει εις πολεμον συ και οι ανδρες σου

When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly.

και ειδεν σαουλ την παρεμβολην των αλλοφυλων και εφοβηθη και εξεστη η καρδια αυτου σφοδρα

Moreover Yahweh will deliver Israel also with you into the hand of the Philistines; and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. Yahweh will deliver the army of Israel also into the hand of the Philistines.”

Moreover the Lord H3068 will also deliver H5414 (QalImpf) Israel H3478 with thee into the hand H3027 of the Philistines: H6430 and to morrow H4279 [shalt] thou and thy sons H1121 [be] with me: the Lord H3068 also shall deliver H5414 (QalImpf) the host H4264 of Israel H3478 into the hand H3027 of the Philistines. και παραδωσει κυριος τον ισραηλ μετα σου εις χειρας αλλοφυλων και αυριον συ και οι υιοι σου μετα σου πεσουνται και την παρεμβολην ισραηλ δωσει κυριος εις χειρας αλλοφυλων

Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek; and the Israelites encamped by the spring which is in Jezreel.

Now the Philistines H6430 gathered together H6908 (QalImpf) all their armies H4264 to Aphek: H663 and the Israelites H3478 pitched H2583 (QalActPtc) by a fountain H5869 which [is] in Jezreel. H3157

και συναθροιζουσιν αλλοφυλοι πασας τας παρεμβολας αυτων εις αφεκ και ισραηλ παρενεβαλεν εν αενδωρ τη εν ιεζραελ

Then Achish called David and said to him, “As Yahweh lives, you have been upright, and your going out and your coming in with me in the army is good in my sight; for I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to me to this day. Nevertheless, the lords don’t favor you.

Then Achish H397 called H7121 (QalImpf) David, H1732 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Surely, [as] the Lord H3068 liveth, H2416 thou hast been upright, H3477 and thy going out H3318 (QalInf) and thy coming in H935 (QalInf) with me in the host H4264 [is] good H2896 in my sight: H5869 for I have not found H4672 (QalPerf) evil H7451 in thee since the day H3117 of thy coming H935 (QalInf) unto me unto this day: H3117 nevertheless the lords H5633 favour H2896 thee not. και εκαλεσεν αγχους τον δαυιδ και ειπεν αυτω ζη κυριος οτι ευθης συ και αγαθος εν οφθαλμοις μου και η εξοδος σου και η εισοδος σου μετ εμου εν τη παρεμβολη και οτι ουχ ευρηκα κατα σου κακιαν αφ ης ημερας ηκεις προς με εως της σημερον ημερας και εν οφθαλμοις των σατραπων ουκ αγαθος συ

on the third day, behold,^§ a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the earth and showed respect.

2 Samuel 1:2 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

It came even to pass on the third H7992 day, H3117 that, behold, a man H376 came H935 (QalActPtc) out of the camp H4264 from Saul H7586 with his clothes H899 rent, H7167 (QalPasPtc) and earth H127 upon his head: H7218 and [so] it was, when he came H935 (QalInf) to David, H1732 that he fell H5307 (QalImpf) to the earth, H776 and did obeisance. και εγενηθη τη ημερα τη τριτη και ιδου ανηρ ηλθεν εκ της παρεμβολης εκ του λαου σαουλ και τα ιματια αυτου διερρωγοτα και γη επι της κεφαλης αυτου και εγενετο εν τω εισελθειν αυτον προς δαυιδ και επεσεν επι την γην και προσεκυνησεν αυτω

David said to him, “Where do you come from?” He said to him, “I have escaped out of the camp of Israel.”

And David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, From whence comest H935 (QalImpf) thou? And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Out of the camp H4264 of Israel H3478 am I escaped. H4422 (NiphPerf)

και ειπεν αυτω δαυιδ ποθεν συ παραγινη και ειπεν προς αυτον εκ της παρεμβολης ισραηλ εγω διασεσωσμαι

When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then stir yourself up; for then Yahweh has gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.”

And let it be, when thou hearest H8085 (QalInf) the sound H6963 of a going H6807 in the tops H7218 of the mulberry trees, H1057 that then thou shalt bestir H2782 (QalImpf) thyself: for then shall the Lord H3068 go out H3318 (QalPerf) before H6440 thee, to smite H5221 (HiphInf) the host H4264 of the Philistines. H6430

και εσται εν τω ακουσαι σε την φωνην του συγκλεισμου του αλσους του κλαυθμωνος τοτε καταβησει προς αυτους οτι τοτε εξελευσεται κυριος εμπροσθεν σου κοπτειν εν τω πολεμω των αλλοφυλων
