Now therefore arise, go out and speak to comfort your servants; for I swear by Yahweh, if you don’t go out, not a man will stay with you this night. That would be worse to you than all the evil that has happened to you from your youth until now.”

The king said to Shimei, “You will not die.” The king swore to him.

δευρο εισελθε προς τον βασιλεα δαυιδ και ερεις προς αυτον λεγουσα ουχι συ κυριε μου βασιλευ ωμοσας τη δουλη σου λεγων οτι σαλωμων ο υιος σου βασιλευσει μετ εμε και αυτος καθιειται επι του θρονου μου και τι οτι εβασιλευσεν αδωνιας

She said to him, “My lord, you swore by Yahweh^§ your God^§ to your servant, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’

most certainly as I swore to you by Yahweh, the God of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place;’ I will most certainly do this today.”

Solomon was told, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon; for, behold, he is hanging onto the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not kill his servant with the sword.’ ”

“Behold, there is with you Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite of Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim; but he came down to meet me at the Jordan, and I swore to him by Yahweh, saying, ‘I will not put you to death with the sword.’

Then King Solomon swore by Yahweh, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life.

και ωμοσεν ο βασιλευς σαλωμων κατα του κυριου λεγων ταδε ποιησαι μοι ο θεος και ταδε προσθειη οτι κατα της ψυχης αυτου ελαλησεν αδωνιας τον λογον τουτον

The king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, “Didn’t I adjure you by Yahweh and warn you, saying, ‘Know for certain that on the day you go out and walk anywhere else, you shall surely die’? You said to me, ‘The saying that I have heard is good.’

And the king H4428 sent H7971 (QalImpf) and called H7121 (QalImpf) for Shimei, H8096 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Did I not make thee to swear H7650 (HiphPerf) by the Lord, H3068 and protested H5749 (HiphImpf) unto thee, saying, H559 (QalInf) Know H3045 (QalImpf) for a certain, H3045 (QalInf) on the day H3117 thou goest out, H3318 (QalInf) and walkest H1980 (QalPerf) abroad any whither, H575 that thou shalt surely H4191 (QalInf) die? As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he took an oath of the kingdom and nation that they didn’t find you.

[As] the Lord H3068 thy God H430 liveth, H2416 there is no H3426 nation H1471 or kingdom, H4467 whither H834 my lord H113 hath not sent H7971 (QalPerf) to seek H1245 (PielInf) thee: and when they said, H559 (QalPerf) [He is] not [there]; he took an oath H7650 (HiphPerf) of the kingdom H4467 and nation, H1471 that they found H4672 (QalImpf) thee not.

ζη κυριος ο θεος σου ει εστιν εθνος η βασιλεια ου ουκ απεσταλκεν ο κυριος μου ζητειν σε και ειπον ουκ εστιν και ενεπρησεν την βασιλειαν και τας χωρας αυτης οτι ουχ ευρηκεν σε

The king said to him, “How many times do I have to adjure you that you speak to me nothing but the truth in Yahweh’s name?”

And the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, How many times H6471 shall I adjure H7650 (HiphPtc) thee that thou tell H1696 (PielImpf) me nothing but [that which is] true H571 in the name H8034 of the Lord? H3068

και ειπεν αυτω ο βασιλευς ποσακις εγω ορκιζω σε οπως λαλησης προς με αληθειαν εν ονοματι κυριου

In the seventh year Jehoiada sent and fetched the captains over hundreds of the Carites and of the guard, and brought them to him into Yahweh’s house; and he made a covenant with them, and made a covenant with them in Yahweh’s house, and showed them the king’s son.

και ωμοσεν γοδολιας αυτοις και τοις ανδρασιν αυτων και ειπεν αυτοις μη φοβεισθε παροδον των χαλδαιων καθισατε εν τη γη και δουλευσατε τω βασιλει βαβυλωνος και καλως εσται υμιν

They swore to Yahweh with a loud voice, with shouting, with trumpets, and with cornets.

και ωμοσαν εν τω κυριω εν φωνη μεγαλη και εν σαλπιγξιν και εν κερατιναις

All Judah rejoiced at the oath, for they had sworn with all their heart and sought him with their whole desire; and he was found by them. Then Yahweh gave them rest all around.

The king said to him, “How many times shall I adjure you that you speak to me nothing but the truth in Yahweh’s name?”

He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God; but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart against turning to Yahweh, the God of Israel.

Then Ezra arose, and made the chiefs of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel to swear that they would do according to this word. So they swore.

Then they said, “We will restore them, and will require nothing of them. We will do so, even as you say.” Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they would do according to this promise.

I contended with them, cursed them, struck certain of them, plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.

και εμαχεσαμην μετ αυτων και κατηρασαμην αυτους και επαταξα εν αυτοις ανδρας και εμαδαρωσα αυτους και ωρκισα αυτους εν τω θεω εαν δωτε τας θυγατερας υμων τοις υιοις αυτων και εαν λαβητε απο των θυγατερων αυτων τοις υιοις υμων

in whose eyes a vile man is despised, but who honors those who fear Yahweh; he who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and doesn’t change;

^[14:4] εξουδενωται ενωπιον αυτου πονηρευομενος τους δε φοβουμενους κυριον δοξαζει ο ομνυων τω πλησιον αυτου και ουκ αθετων

He who has clean hands and a pure heart; who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood, and has not sworn deceitfully.

^[23:4] αθωος χερσιν και καθαρος τη καρδια ος ουκ ελαβεν επι ματαιω την ψυχην αυτου και ουκ ωμοσεν επι δολω τω πλησιον αυτου

But the king shall rejoice in God. Everyone who swears by him will praise him, for the mouth of those who speak lies shall be silenced.

“I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David, my servant,

Once I have sworn by my holiness, I will not lie to David.

My enemies reproach me all day. Those who are mad at me use my name as a curse.

Yahweh has sworn, and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”

Yahweh has sworn to David in truth. He will not turn from it: “I will set the fruit of your body on your throne.

^[131:11] ωμοσεν κυριος τω δαυιδ αληθειαν και ου μη αθετησει αυτην εκ καρπου της κοιλιας σου θησομαι επι τον θρονον σου

All things come alike to all. There is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good, to the clean, to the unclean, to him who sacrifices, and to him who doesn’t sacrifice. As is the good, so is the sinner; he who takes an oath, as he who fears an oath.

I adjure you, daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, or by the hinds of the field, that you not stir up, nor awaken love, until it so desires.

In that day, there will be five cities in the land of Egypt that speak the language of Canaan, and swear to Yahweh of Armies. One will be called “The city of destruction.”

I have sworn by myself. The word has gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and will not be revoked, that to me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath.

“Hear this, house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel, and have come out of the waters of Judah. You swear by Yahweh’s name, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness—

ακουσατε ταυτα οικος ιακωβ οι κεκλημενοι τω ονοματι ισραηλ και οι εξ ιουδα εξελθοντες οι ομνυοντες τω ονοματι κυριου θεου ισραηλ μιμνησκομενοι ου μετα αληθειας ουδε μετα δικαιοσυνης

“For this is like the waters of Noah to me; for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah will no more go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you, nor rebuke you.

απο του υδατος του επι νωε τουτο μοι εστιν καθοτι ωμοσα αυτω εν τω χρονω εκεινω τη γη μη θυμωθησεσθαι επι σοι ετι μηδε εν απειλη σου

Yahweh has sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, “Surely I will no more give your grain to be food for your enemies, and foreigners will not drink your new wine, for which you have labored,

ωμοσεν κυριος κατα της δεξιας αυτου και κατα της ισχυος του βραχιονος αυτου ει ετι δωσω τον σιτον σου και τα βρωματα σου τοις εχθροις σου και ει ετι πιονται υιοι αλλοτριοι τον οινον σου εφ ω εμοχθησας

so that he who blesses himself in the earth will bless himself in the God of truth; and he who swears in the earth will swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hidden from my eyes.

ο ευλογηθησεται επι της γης ευλογησουσιν γαρ τον θεον τον αληθινον και οι ομνυοντες επι της γης ομουνται τον θεον τον αληθινον επιλησονται γαρ την θλιψιν αυτων την πρωτην και ουκ αναβησεται αυτων επι την καρδιαν

and you will swear, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ in truth, in justice, and in righteousness. The nations will bless themselves in him, and they will glory in him.”
