He restored the border of Israel from the entrance of Hamath to the sea of the Arabah, according to Yahweh, the God of Israel’s word, which he spoke by his servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was from Gath Hepher.

He restored H7725 (HiphPerf) the coast H1366 of Israel H3478 from the entering H935 (QalInf) of Hamath H2574 unto the sea H3220 of the plain, H6160 according to the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 which he spake H1696 (PielPerf) by the hand H3027 of his servant H5650 Jonah, H3124 the son H1121 of Amittai, H573 the prophet, H5030 which [was] of Gathhepher. H1662

αυτος απεστησεν το οριον ισραηλ απο εισοδου αιμαθ εως της θαλασσης της αραβα κατα το ρημα κυριου θεου ισραηλ ο ελαλησεν εν χειρι δουλου αυτου ιωνα υιου αμαθι του προφητου του εκ γεθχοβερ

Now Yahweh’s^§ word came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

Jonah 1:1 “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “Lord” (all caps) in other translations.

Now the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 came unto Jonah H3124 the son H1121 of Amittai, H573 saying, H559 (QalInf)

και εγενετο λογος κυριου προς ιωναν τον του αμαθι λεγων

But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.

But Jonah H3124 rose up H6965 (QalImpf) to flee H1272 (QalInf) unto Tarshish H8659 from the presence H6440 of the Lord, H3068 and went down H3381 (QalImpf) to Joppa; H3305 and he found H4672 (QalImpf) a ship H591 going H935 (QalActPtc) to Tarshish: H8659 so he paid H5414 (QalImpf) the fare H7939 thereof, and went down H3381 (QalImpf) into it, to go H935 (QalInf) with them unto Tarshish H8659 from the presence H6440 of the Lord. H3068

και ανεστη ιωνας του φυγειν εις θαρσις εκ προσωπου κυριου και κατεβη εις ιοππην και ευρεν πλοιον βαδιζον εις θαρσις και εδωκεν το ναυλον αυτου και ενεβη εις αυτο του πλευσαι μετ αυτων εις θαρσις εκ προσωπου κυριου

Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.

Then the mariners H4419 were afraid, H3372 (QalImpf) and cried H2199 (QalImpf) every man H376 unto his god, H430 and cast forth H2904 (HiphImpf) the wares H3627 that [were] in the ship H591 into the sea, H3220 to lighten H7043 (HiphInf) [it] of them. και εφοβηθησαν οι ναυτικοι και ανεβοων εκαστος προς τον θεον αυτων και εκβολην εποιησαντο των σκευων των εν τω πλοιω εις την θαλασσαν του κουφισθηναι απ αυτων ιωνας δε κατεβη εις την κοιλην του πλοιου και εκαθευδεν και ερρεγχεν

They all said to each other, “Come! Let’s cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

And they said H559 (QalImpf) every one H376 to his fellow, H7453 Come, H3212 (QalImpv) and let us cast H5307 (HiphImpf) lots, H1486 that we may know H3045 (QalImpf) for whose cause H7945 this evil H7451 [is] upon us. So they cast H5307 (HiphImpf) lots, H1486 and the lot H1486 fell H5307 (QalImpf) upon Jonah. H3124

και ειπεν εκαστος προς τον πλησιον αυτου δευτε βαλωμεν κληρους και επιγνωμεν τινος ενεκεν η κακια αυτη εστιν εν ημιν και εβαλον κληρους και επεσεν ο κληρος επι ιωναν

So they took up Jonah and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.

So they took up H5375 (QalImpf) Jonah, H3124 and cast him forth H2904 (HiphImpf) into the sea: H3220 and the sea H3220 ceased H5975 (QalImpf) from her raging. H2197

και ελαβον τον ιωναν και εξεβαλον αυτον εις την θαλασσαν και εστη η θαλασσα εκ του σαλου αυτης

Yahweh prepared a huge fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Now the Lord H3068 had prepared H4487 (PielImpf) a great H1419 fish H1709 to swallow up H1104 (QalInf) Jonah. H3124 And Jonah H3124 was in the belly H4578 of the fish H1709 three H7969 days H3117 and three H7969 nights. H3915

^[2:1] και προσεταξεν κυριος κητει μεγαλω καταπιειν τον ιωναν και ην ιωνας εν τη κοιλια του κητους τρεις ημερας και τρεις νυκτας

Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh, his God, out of the fish’s belly.

Then Jonah H3124 prayed H6419 (HithImpf) unto the Lord H3068 his God H430 out of the fish’s H1710 belly, H4578

^[2:2] και προσηυξατο ιωνας προς κυριον τον θεον αυτου εκ της κοιλιας του κητους

Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah on the dry land.

And the Lord H3068 spake H559 (QalImpf) unto the fish, H1709 and it vomited out H6958 (HiphImpf) Jonah H3124 upon the dry H3004 [land].

^[2:11] και προσεταγη τω κητει και εξεβαλεν τον ιωναν επι την ξηραν

Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the second time, saying,

And the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 came unto Jonah H3124 the second H8145 time, saying, H559 (QalInf)

και εγενετο λογος κυριου προς ιωναν εκ δευτερου λεγων

So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to Yahweh’s word. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey across.

So Jonah H3124 arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and went H3212 (QalImpf) unto Nineveh, H5210 according to the word H1697 of the Lord. H3068 Now Nineveh H5210 was an exceeding H430 great H1419 city H5892 of three H7969 days’ H3117 journey. H4109

και ανεστη ιωνας και επορευθη εις νινευη καθως ελαλησεν κυριος η δε νινευη ην πολις μεγαλη τω θεω ωσει πορειας οδου ημερων τριων

Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried out, and said, “In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!”

And Jonah H3124 began H2490 (HiphImpf) to enter H935 (QalInf) into the city H5892 a H259 day’s H3117 journey, H4109 and he cried, H7121 (QalImpf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) Yet forty H705 days, H3117 and Nineveh H5210 shall be overthrown. H2015 (NiphPtc)

και ηρξατο ιωνας του εισελθειν εις την πολιν ωσει πορειαν ημερας μιας και εκηρυξεν και ειπεν ετι τρεις ημεραι και νινευη καταστραφησεται

But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.

But it displeased H3415 (QalImpf) Jonah H3124 exceedingly, H1419 H7451 and he was very angry. H2734 (QalImpf)

και ελυπηθη ιωνας λυπην μεγαλην και συνεχυθη

Then Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city, and there made himself a booth and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city.

So Jonah H3124 went out H3318 (QalImpf) of the city, H5892 and sat H3427 (QalImpf) on the east side H6924 of the city, H5892 and there made H6213 (QalImpf) him a booth, H5521 and sat H3427 (QalImpf) under it in the shadow, H6738 till he might see H7200 (QalImpf) what would become of the city. και εξηλθεν ιωνας εκ της πολεως και εκαθισεν απεναντι της πολεως και εποιησεν εαυτω εκει σκηνην και εκαθητο υποκατω αυτης εν σκια εως ου απιδη τι εσται τη πολει

Yahweh God prepared a vine and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine.

And the Lord H3068 God H430 prepared H4487 (PielImpf) a gourd, H7021 and made [it] to come up H5927 (QalImpf) over Jonah, H3124 that it might be a shadow H6738 over his head, H7218 to deliver H5337 (HiphInf) him from his grief. H7451 So Jonah H3124 was exceeding H1419 H8057 glad H8055 (QalImpf) of the gourd. H7021

και προσεταξεν κυριος ο θεος κολοκυνθη και ανεβη υπερ κεφαλης του ιωνα του ειναι σκιαν υπερανω της κεφαλης αυτου του σκιαζειν αυτω απο των κακων αυτου και εχαρη ιωνας επι τη κολοκυνθη χαραν μεγαλην

When the sun arose, God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he was faint and requested for himself that he might die. He said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”

And it came to pass, when the sun H8121 did arise, H2224 (QalInf) that God H430 prepared H4487 (PielImpf) a vehement H2759 east H6921 wind; H7307 and the sun H8121 beat H5221 (HiphImpf) upon the head H7218 of Jonah, H3124 that he fainted, H5968 (HithImpf) and wished H7592 (QalImpf) in himself H5315 to die, H4191 (QalInf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) [It is] better H2896 for me to die H4194 than to live. και εγενετο αμα τω ανατειλαι τον ηλιον και προσεταξεν ο θεος πνευματι καυσωνος συγκαιοντι και επαταξεν ο ηλιος επι την κεφαλην ιωνα και ωλιγοψυχησεν και απελεγετο την ψυχην αυτου και ειπεν καλον μοι αποθανειν με η ζην

God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the vine?” He said, “I am right to be angry, even to death.”

And God H430 said H559 (QalImpf) to Jonah, H3124 Doest thou well H3190 (HiphInf) to be angry H2734 (QalPerf) for the gourd? H7021 And he said, H559 (QalImpf) I do well H3190 (HiphInf) to be angry, H2734 (QalPerf) [even] unto death. H4194

και ειπεν ο θεος προς ιωναν ει σφοδρα λελυπησαι συ επι τη κολοκυνθη και ειπεν σφοδρα λελυπημαι εγω εως θανατου
