[1] Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the second time, saying, [2] “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I give you.” [3] So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to Yahweh’s word. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey across. [4] Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried out, and said, “In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!” [5] The people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from their greatest even to their least. [6] The news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. [7] He made a proclamation and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, “Let neither man nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water; [8] but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and animal, and let them cry mightily to God. Yes, let them turn everyone from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. [9] Who knows whether God will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we might not perish?” [10] God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. God relented of the disaster which he said he would do to them, and he didn’t do it.
King James Version
[1] And the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 came unto JonahH3124 the secondH8145 time, saying,H559(QalInf) [2] Arise,H6965(QalImpv) goH3212(QalImpv) unto Nineveh,H5210 that greatH1419 city,H5892 and preachH7121(QalImpv) unto it the preachingH7150 that I bidH1696(QalActPtc) thee. [3] So JonahH3124 arose,H6965(QalImpf) and wentH3212(QalImpf) unto Nineveh,H5210 according to the wordH1697 of the Lord.H3068 Now NinevehH5210 was an exceedingH430 greatH1419 cityH5892 of threeH7969 days’H3117 journey.H4109 [4] And JonahH3124 beganH2490(HiphImpf) to enterH935(QalInf) into the cityH5892 aH259 day’sH3117 journey,H4109 and he cried,H7121(QalImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) Yet fortyH705 days,H3117 and NinevehH5210 shall be overthrown.H2015(NiphPtc) [5] So the peopleH582 of NinevehH5210 believedH539(HiphImpf) God,H430 and proclaimedH7121(QalImpf) a fast,H6685 and putH3847(QalImpf) on sackcloth,H8242 from the greatestH1419 of them even to the leastH6996 of them. [6] For wordH1697 cameH5060(QalImpf) unto the kingH4428 of Nineveh,H5210 and he aroseH6965(QalImpf) from his throne,H3678 and he laidH5674(HiphImpf) his robeH155 from him, and coveredH3680(PielImpf) [him] with sackcloth,H8242 and satH3427(QalImpf) in ashes.H665 [7] And he caused [it] to be proclaimedH2199(HiphImpf) and publishedH559(QalImpf) through NinevehH5210 by the decreeH2940 of the kingH4428 and his nobles,H1419 saying,H559(QalInf) Let neither manH120 nor beast,H929 herdH1241 nor flock,H6629 tasteH2938(QalImpf) any thing:H3972 let them not feed,H7462(QalImpf) nor drinkH8354(QalImpf) water:H4325 [8] But let manH120 and beastH929 be coveredH3680(HithImpf) with sackcloth,H8242 and cryH7121(QalImpf) mightilyH2394 unto God:H430 yea, let them turnH7725(QalImpf) every oneH376 from his evilH7451 way,H1870 and from the violenceH2555 that [is] in their hands.H3709 [9] Who can tellH3045(QalActPtc) [if] GodH430 will turnH7725(QalImpf) and repent,H5162(NiphPerf) and turn awayH7725(QalPerf) from his fierceH2740 anger,H639 that we perishH6(QalImpf) not? [10] And GodH430 sawH7200(QalImpf) their works,H4639 that they turnedH7725(QalPerf) from their evilH7451 way;H1870 and GodH430 repentedH5162(NiphImpf) of the evil,H7451 that he had saidH1696(PielPerf) that he would doH6213(QalInf) unto them; and he didH6213(QalPerf) [it] not.
