[1] Now Yahweh’s§ word came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, [2] “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.” [3] But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. [4] But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up. [5] Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship and he was laying down, and was fast asleep. [6] So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God!§ Maybe your God§ will notice us, so that we won’t perish.” [7] They all said to each other, “Come! Let’s cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. [8] Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?” [9] He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God§ of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.” [10] Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them. [11] Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy. [12] He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.” [13] Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them. [14] Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.” [15] So they took up Jonah and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging. [16] Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vows. [17] Yahweh prepared a huge fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

King James Version
[1] Now the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 came unto JonahH3124 the sonH1121 of Amittai,H573 saying,H559(QalInf) [2] Arise,H6965(QalImpv) goH3212(QalImpv) to Nineveh,H5210 that greatH1419 city,H5892 and cryH7121(QalImpv) against it; for their wickednessH7451 is come upH5927(QalPerf) beforeH6440 me. [3] But JonahH3124 rose upH6965(QalImpf) to fleeH1272(QalInf) unto TarshishH8659 from the presenceH6440 of the Lord,H3068 and went downH3381(QalImpf) to Joppa;H3305 and he foundH4672(QalImpf) a shipH591 goingH935(QalActPtc) to Tarshish:H8659 so he paidH5414(QalImpf) the fareH7939 thereof, and went downH3381(QalImpf) into it, to goH935(QalInf) with them unto TarshishH8659 from the presenceH6440 of the Lord.H3068 [4] But the LordH3068 sent outH2904(HiphPerf) a greatH1419 windH7307 into the sea,H3220 and there was a mightyH1419 tempestH5591 in the sea,H3220 so that the shipH591 was likeH2803(PielPerf) to be broken.H7665(NiphInf) [5] Then the marinersH4419 were afraid,H3372(QalImpf) and criedH2199(QalImpf) every manH376 unto his god,H430 and cast forthH2904(HiphImpf) the waresH3627 that [were] in the shipH591 into the sea,H3220 to lightenH7043(HiphInf) [it] of them. But JonahH3124 was gone downH3381(QalPerf) into the sidesH3411 of the ship;H5600 and he lay,H7901(QalImpf) and was fast asleep.H7290(NiphImpf) [6] So the shipmasterH7227 cameH7126(QalImpf) to him, and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper?H7290(NiphPtc) arise,H6965(QalImpv) callH7121(QalImpv) upon thy God,H430 if so be that GodH430 will thinkH6245(HithImpf) upon us, that we perishH6(QalImpf) not. [7] And they saidH559(QalImpf) every oneH376 to his fellow,H7453 Come,H3212(QalImpv) and let us castH5307(HiphImpf) lots,H1486 that we may knowH3045(QalImpf) for whose causeH7945 this evilH7451 [is] upon us. So they castH5307(HiphImpf) lots,H1486 and the lotH1486 fellH5307(QalImpf) upon Jonah.H3124 [8] Then saidH559(QalImpf) they unto him, TellH5046(HiphImpv) us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evilH7451 [is] upon us; What [is] thine occupation?H4399 and whenceH370 comestH935(QalImpf) thou? what [is] thy country?H776 and of what peopleH5971 [art] thou? [9] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, I [am] an Hebrew;H5680 and I fearH3373 the Lord,H3068 the GodH430 of heaven,H8064 which hath madeH6213(QalPerf) the seaH3220 and the dryH3004 [land]. [10] Then were the menH582 exceedinglyH1419 afraid,H3372(QalImpf) and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Why hast thou doneH6213(QalPerf) this? For the menH582 knewH3045(QalPerf) that he fledH1272(QalActPtc) from the presenceH6440 of the Lord,H3068 because he had toldH5046(HiphPerf) them. [11] Then saidH559(QalImpf) they unto him, What shall we doH6213(QalImpf) unto thee, that the seaH3220 may be calmH8367(QalImpf) unto us? for the seaH3220 wrought,H1980(QalActPtc) and was tempestuous.H5590(QalActPtc) [12] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, Take me up,H5375(QalImpv) and cast me forthH2904(HiphImpv) into the sea;H3220 so shall the seaH3220 be calmH8367(QalImpf) unto you: for I knowH3045(QalActPtc) that for my sakeH7945 this greatH1419 tempestH5591 [is] upon you. [13] Nevertheless the menH582 rowed hardH2864(QalImpf) to bringH7725(HiphInf) [it] to the land;H3004 but they couldH3201(QalPerf) not: for the seaH3220 wrought,H1980(QalActPtc) and was tempestuousH5590(QalActPtc) against them. [14] Wherefore they criedH7121(QalImpf) unto the Lord,H3068 and said,H559(QalImpf) We beseech thee,H577 O Lord,H3068 we beseech thee, let us not perishH6(QalImpf) for this man’sH376 life,H5315 and layH5414(QalImpf) not upon us innocentH5355(Qere) blood:H1818 for thou, O Lord,H3068 hast doneH6213(QalPerf) as it pleasedH2654(QalPerf) thee. [15] So they took upH5375(QalImpf) Jonah,H3124 and cast him forthH2904(HiphImpf) into the sea:H3220 and the seaH3220 ceasedH5975(QalImpf) from her raging.H2197 [16] Then the menH582 fearedH3372(QalImpf) the LordH3068 exceedingly,H1419 and offeredH2076(QalImpf) a sacrificeH2077 unto the Lord,H3068 and madeH5087(QalImpf) vows.H5088 [17] Now the LordH3068 had preparedH4487(PielImpf) a greatH1419 fishH1709 to swallow upH1104(QalInf) Jonah.H3124 And JonahH3124 was in the bellyH4578 of the fishH1709 threeH7969 daysH3117 and threeH7969 nights.H3915
