[1] Now Yahweh’s§ word came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, [2] “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.” [3] But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. [4] But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up. [5] Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship and he was laying down, and was fast asleep. [6] So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God!§ Maybe your God§ will notice us, so that we won’t perish.” [7] They all said to each other, “Come! Let’s cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. [8] Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?” [9] He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God§ of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.” [10] Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them. [11] Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy. [12] He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.” [13] Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them. [14] Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.” [15] So they took up Jonah and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging. [16] Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vows. [17] Yahweh prepared a huge fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

King James Version
[1] Now the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 came unto Jonah H3124ⓘ the son H1121 of Amittai, H573 saying, H559 (QalInf) [2] Arise, H6965 (QalImpv) go H3212 (QalImpv) to Nineveh, H5210 that great H1419 city, H5892 and cry H7121 (QalImpv) against it; for their wickedness H7451 is come up H5927 (QalPerf) before H6440 me. [3] But Jonah H3124 rose up H6965 (QalImpf) to flee H1272 (QalInf) unto Tarshish H8659 from the presence H6440 of the Lord, H3068 and went down H3381 (QalImpf) to Joppa; H3305 and he found H4672 (QalImpf) a ship H591 going H935 (QalActPtc) to Tarshish: H8659 so he paid H5414 (QalImpf) the fare H7939 thereof, and went down H3381 (QalImpf) into it, to go H935 (QalInf) with them unto Tarshish H8659 from the presence H6440 of the Lord. H3068 [4] But the Lord H3068 sent out H2904 (HiphPerf)§ a great H1419 wind H7307 into the sea, H3220 and there was a mighty H1419 tempest H5591 in the sea, H3220 so that the ship H591 was like H2803 (PielPerf) to be broken. H7665 (NiphInf)§ [5] Then the mariners H4419 were afraid, H3372 (QalImpf) and cried H2199 (QalImpf) every man H376 unto his god, H430 and cast forth H2904 (HiphImpf) the wares H3627 that were in the ship H591 into the sea, H3220 to lighten H7043 (HiphInf) it of them. But Jonah H3124 was gone down H3381 (QalPerf) into the sides H3411 of the ship; H5600 and he lay, H7901 (QalImpf) and was fast asleep. H7290 (NiphImpf) [6] So the shipmaster H7227 came H7126 (QalImpf) to him, and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? H7290 (NiphPtc) arise, H6965 (QalImpv) call H7121 (QalImpv) upon thy God, H430 if so be that God H430 will think H6245 (HithImpf) upon us, that we perish H6 (QalImpf) not. [7] And they said H559 (QalImpf) every one H376 to his fellow, H7453 Come, H3212 (QalImpv) and let us cast H5307 (HiphImpf) lots, H1486 that we may know H3045 (QalImpf) for whose cause H7945 this evil H7451 is upon us. So they cast H5307 (HiphImpf) lots, H1486 and the lot H1486 fell H5307 (QalImpf) upon Jonah. H3124 [8] Then said H559 (QalImpf) they unto him, Tell H5046 (HiphImpv) us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil H7451 is upon us; What is thine occupation? H4399 and whence H370 comest H935 (QalImpf) thou? what is thy country? H776 and of what people H5971 art thou? [9] And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, I am an Hebrew; H5680 and I fear H3373 the Lord,§ H3068 the God H430 of heaven, H8064 which hath made H6213 (QalPerf) the sea H3220 and the dry H3004 land. [10] Then were the men H582 exceedingly H1419 afraid, H3372 (QalImpf)§ and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Why hast thou done H6213 (QalPerf) this? For the men H582 knew H3045 (QalPerf) that he fled H1272 (QalActPtc) from the presence H6440 of the Lord, H3068 because he had told H5046 (HiphPerf) them. [11] Then said H559 (QalImpf) they unto him, What shall we do H6213 (QalImpf) unto thee, that the sea H3220 may be calm H8367 (QalImpf) unto us?§ for the sea H3220 wrought, H1980 (QalActPtc) and was tempestuous. H5590 (QalActPtc) [12] And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, Take me up, H5375 (QalImpv) and cast me forth H2904 (HiphImpv) into the sea; H3220 so shall the sea H3220 be calm H8367 (QalImpf) unto you: for I know H3045 (QalActPtc) that for my sake H7945 this great H1419 tempest H5591 is upon you. [13] Nevertheless the men H582 rowed§ hard H2864 (QalImpf) to bring H7725 (HiphInf) it to the land; H3004 but they could H3201 (QalPerf) not: for the sea H3220 wrought, H1980 (QalActPtc) and was tempestuous H5590 (QalActPtc) against them. [14] Wherefore they cried H7121 (QalImpf) unto the Lord, H3068 and said, H559 (QalImpf) We beseech thee, H577 O Lord, H3068 we beseech thee, let us not perish H6 (QalImpf) for this man’s H376 life, H5315 and lay H5414 (QalImpf) not upon us innocent H5355 (Qere) blood: H1818 for thou, O Lord, H3068 hast done H6213 (QalPerf) as it pleased H2654 (QalPerf) thee. [15] So they took up H5375 (QalImpf) Jonah, H3124 and cast him forth H2904 (HiphImpf) into the sea: H3220 and the sea H3220 ceased H5975 (QalImpf)§ from her raging. H2197 [16] Then the men H582 feared H3372 (QalImpf) the Lord H3068 exceedingly, H1419 and offered H2076 (QalImpf) a sacrifice H2077 unto the Lord, H3068 and made H5087 (QalImpf) vows. H5088§
