World English Bible Classic
[1] Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, shall I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you? [2] Now isn’t Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens you were? Behold, he will be winnowing barley tonight on the threshing floor. [3] Therefore wash yourself, anoint yourself, get dressed, and go down to the threshing floor; but don’t make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. [4] It shall be, when he lies down, that you shall note the place where he is lying. Then you shall go in, uncover his feet, and lie down. Then he will tell you what to do.” [5] She said to her, “All that you say, I will do.” [6] She went down to the threshing floor, and did everything that her mother-in-law told her. [7] When Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. She came softly, uncovered his feet, and lay down. [8] At midnight, the man was startled and turned himself; and behold, a woman lay at his feet. [9] He said, “Who are you?”She answered, “I am Ruth your servant. Therefore spread the corner of your garment over your servant; for you are a near kinsman.” [10] He said, “You are blessed by Yahweh, my daughter. You have shown more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, because you didn’t follow young men, whether poor or rich. [11] Now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do to you all that you say; for all the city of my people knows that you are a worthy woman. [12] Now it is true that I am a near kinsman. However, there is a kinsman nearer than I. [13] Stay this night, and in the morning, if he will perform for you the part of a kinsman, good. Let him do the kinsman’s duty. But if he will not do the duty of a kinsman for you, then I will do the duty of a kinsman for you, as Yahweh lives. Lie down until the morning.” [14] She lay at his feet until the morning, then she rose up before one could discern another. For he said, “Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.” [15] He said, “Bring the mantle that is on you, and hold it.” She held it; and he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her; then he went into the city. [16] When she came to her mother-in-law, she said, “How did it go, my daughter?”She told her all that the man had done for her. [17] She said, “He gave me these six measures of barley; for he said, ‘Don’t go empty to your mother-in-law.’ ” [18] Then she said, “Wait, my daughter, until you know what will happen; for the man will not rest until he has settled this today.”

Naomi’s Advice
[1] Then Naomi H5281 her mother in law H2545 said H559 (QalImpf) unto her, My daughter, H1323 shall I not seek H1245 (PielImpf) rest H4494 for thee, that it may be well H3190 (QalImpf) with thee? [2] And now is not Boaz H1162 of our kindred, H4130 with whose maidens H5291 thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth H2219 (QalActPtc) barley H8184 to night H3915 in the threshingfloor. H1637 [3] Wash H7364 (QalPerf) thyself therefore, and anoint H5480 (QalPerf) thee, and put H7760 (QalPerf) thy raiment H8071 upon thee, and get thee down H3381 (QalPerf) to the floor: H1637 but make not thyself known H3045 (NiphImpf) unto the man, H376 until he shall have done H3615 (PielInf) eating H398 (QalInf) and drinking. H8354 (QalInf) [4] And it shall be, when he lieth down, H7901 (QalInf) that thou shalt mark H3045 (QalPerf) the place H4725 where he shall lie, H7901 (QalImpf) and thou shalt go in, H935 (QalPerf) and uncover H1540 (PielPerf) his feet, H4772§ and lay thee down; H7901 (QalPerf) and he will tell H5046 (HiphImpf) thee what thou shalt do. H6213 (QalImpf) [5] And she said H559 (QalImpf) unto her, All that thou sayest H559 (QalImpf) unto me I will do. H6213 (QalImpf) [6] And she went down H3381 (QalImpf) unto the floor, H1637 and did H6213 (QalImpf) according to all that her mother in law H2545 bade H6680 (PielPerf) her. [7] And when Boaz H1162 had eaten H398 (QalImpf) and drunk, H8354 (QalImpf) and his heart H3820 was merry, H3190 (QalImpf) he went H935 (QalImpf) to lie down H7901 (QalInf) at the end H7097 of the heap of corn: H6194 and she came H935 (QalImpf) softly, H3909 and uncovered H1540 (PielImpf) his feet, H4772 and laid her down. H7901 (QalImpf) [8] And it came to pass at midnight, H2677 that the man H376 was afraid, H2729 (QalImpf) and turned H3943 (NiphImpf)§ himself: and, behold, a woman H802 lay H7901 (QalActPtc) at his feet. H4772 [9] And he said, H559 (QalImpf) Who art thou? And she answered, H559 (QalImpf) I am Ruth H7327 thine handmaid: H519 spread H6566 (QalPerf) therefore thy skirt H3671 over thine handmaid; H519 for thou art a near kinsman.§ H1350 (QalActPtc) [10] And he said, H559 (QalImpf) Blessed H1288 (QalPasPtc) be thou of the Lord, H3068 my daughter: H1323 for thou hast shewed H3190 (HiphPerf) more kindness H2617 in the latter end H314 than at the beginning, H7223 inasmuch as thou followedst H3212 (QalInf) not H1115 young men, H970 whether poor H1800 or rich. H6223 [11] And now, my daughter, H1323 fear H3372 (QalImpf) not; I will do H6213 (QalImpf) to thee all that thou requirest: H559 (QalImpf) for all the city H8179§ of my people H5971 doth know H3045 (QalActPtc) that thou art a virtuous H2428 woman. H802 [12] And now it is true H551 that I am thy near kinsman: H1350 (QalActPtc) howbeit there is H3426 a kinsman H1350 (QalActPtc) nearer H7138 than I. [13] Tarry H3885 (QalImpv) this night, H3915 and it shall be in the morning, H1242 that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, H1350 (QalImpf) well; H2896 let him do the kinsman’s part: H1350 (QalImpf) but if he will H2654 (QalImpf) not do the part of a kinsman H1350 (QalInf) to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman H1350 (QalPerf) to thee, as the Lord H3068 liveth: H2416 lie down H7901 (QalImpv) until the morning. H1242 [14] And she lay H7901 (QalImpf) at his feet H4772 until the morning: H1242 and she rose up H6965 (QalImpf) before H2958 one H376 could know H5234 (HiphImpf) another. H7453 And he said, H559 (QalImpf) Let it not be known H3045 (NiphImpf) that a woman H802 came H935 (QalPerf) into the floor. H1637 [15] Also he said, H559 (QalImpf) Bring H3051 (QalImpv) the vail H4304§ that thou hast upon thee, and hold H270 (QalImpv) it. And when she held H270 (QalImpf) it, he measured H4058 (QalImpf) six H8337 measures of barley, H8184 and laid H7896 (QalImpf) it on her: and she went H935 (QalImpf) into the city. H5892 [16] And when she came H935 (QalImpf) to her mother in law, H2545 she said, H559 (QalImpf) Who art thou, my daughter? H1323 And she told H5046 (HiphImpf) her all that the man H376 had done H6213 (QalPerf) to her. [17] And she said, H559 (QalImpf) These six H8337 measures of barley H8184 gave H5414 (QalPerf) he me; for he said H559 (QalPerf) to me, Go H935 (QalImpf) not empty H7387 unto thy mother in law. H2545 [18] Then said H559 (QalImpf) she, Sit still, H3427 (QalImpv) my daughter, H1323 until thou know H3045 (QalImpf) how the matter H1697 will fall: H5307 (QalImpf) for the man H376 will not be in rest, H8252 (QalImpf) until H518 he have finished H3615 (PielPerf) the thing H1697 this day.
