[1] Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, shall I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you? [2] Now isn’t Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens you were? Behold, he will be winnowing barley tonight on the threshing floor. [3] Therefore wash yourself, anoint yourself, get dressed, and go down to the threshing floor; but don’t make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. [4] It shall be, when he lies down, that you shall note the place where he is lying. Then you shall go in, uncover his feet, and lie down. Then he will tell you what to do.” [5] She said to her, “All that you say, I will do.” [6] She went down to the threshing floor, and did everything that her mother-in-law told her. [7] When Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. She came softly, uncovered his feet, and lay down. [8] At midnight, the man was startled and turned himself; and behold, a woman lay at his feet. [9] He said, “Who are you?”She answered, “I am Ruth your servant. Therefore spread the corner of your garment over your servant; for you are a near kinsman.” [10] He said, “You are blessed by Yahweh, my daughter. You have shown more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, because you didn’t follow young men, whether poor or rich. [11] Now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do to you all that you say; for all the city of my people knows that you are a worthy woman. [12] Now it is true that I am a near kinsman. However, there is a kinsman nearer than I. [13] Stay this night, and in the morning, if he will perform for you the part of a kinsman, good. Let him do the kinsman’s duty. But if he will not do the duty of a kinsman for you, then I will do the duty of a kinsman for you, as Yahweh lives. Lie down until the morning.” [14] She lay at his feet until the morning, then she rose up before one could discern another. For he said, “Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.” [15] He said, “Bring the mantle that is on you, and hold it.” She held it; and he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her; then he went into the city. [16] When she came to her mother-in-law, she said, “How did it go, my daughter?”She told her all that the man had done for her. [17] She said, “He gave me these six measures of barley; for he said, ‘Don’t go empty to your mother-in-law.’ ” [18] Then she said, “Wait, my daughter, until you know what will happen; for the man will not rest until he has settled this today.”
King James Version
[1] Then NaomiH5281 her mother in lawH2545 saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, My daughter,H1323 shall I not seekH1245(PielImpf) restH4494 for thee, that it may be wellH3190(QalImpf) with thee? [2] And now [is] not BoazH1162 of our kindred,H4130 with whose maidensH5291 thou wast? Behold, he winnowethH2219(QalActPtc) barleyH8184 to nightH3915 in the threshingfloor.H1637 [3] WashH7364(QalPerf) thyself therefore, and anointH5480(QalPerf) thee, and putH7760(QalPerf) thy raimentH8071 upon thee, and get thee downH3381(QalPerf) to the floor:H1637 [but] make not thyself knownH3045(NiphImpf) unto the man,H376 until he shall have doneH3615(PielInf) eatingH398(QalInf) and drinking.H8354(QalInf) [4] And it shall be, when he lieth down,H7901(QalInf) that thou shalt markH3045(QalPerf) the placeH4725 where he shall lie,H7901(QalImpf) and thou shalt go in,H935(QalPerf) and uncoverH1540(PielPerf) his feet,H4772 and lay thee down;H7901(QalPerf) and he will tellH5046(HiphImpf) thee what thou shalt do.H6213(QalImpf) [5] And she saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, All that thou sayestH559(QalImpf) unto me I will do.H6213(QalImpf) [6] And she went downH3381(QalImpf) unto the floor,H1637 and didH6213(QalImpf) according to all that her mother in lawH2545 badeH6680(PielPerf) her. [7] And when BoazH1162 had eatenH398(QalImpf) and drunk,H8354(QalImpf) and his heartH3820 was merry,H3190(QalImpf) he wentH935(QalImpf) to lie downH7901(QalInf) at the endH7097 of the heap of corn:H6194 and she cameH935(QalImpf) softly,H3909 and uncoveredH1540(PielImpf) his feet,H4772 and laid her down.H7901(QalImpf) [8] And it came to pass at midnight,H2677 that the manH376 was afraid,H2729(QalImpf) and turnedH3943(NiphImpf) himself: and, behold, a womanH802 layH7901(QalActPtc) at his feet.H4772 [9] And he said,H559(QalImpf) Who [art] thou? And she answered,H559(QalImpf) I [am] RuthH7327 thine handmaid:H519 spreadH6566(QalPerf) therefore thy skirtH3671 over thine handmaid;H519 for thou [art] a near kinsman.H1350(QalActPtc) [10] And he said,H559(QalImpf) BlessedH1288(QalPasPtc) [be] thou of the Lord,H3068 my daughter:H1323 [for] thou hast shewedH3190(HiphPerf) more kindnessH2617 in the latter endH314 than at the beginning,H7223 inasmuch as thou followedstH3212(QalInf) notH1115 young men,H970 whether poorH1800 or rich.H6223 [11] And now, my daughter,H1323 fearH3372(QalImpf) not; I will doH6213(QalImpf) to thee all that thou requirest:H559(QalImpf) for all the cityH8179 of my peopleH5971 doth knowH3045(QalActPtc) that thou [art] a virtuousH2428 woman.H802 [12] And now it is trueH551 that I [am thy] near kinsman:H1350(QalActPtc) howbeit there isH3426 a kinsmanH1350(QalActPtc) nearerH7138 than I. [13] TarryH3885(QalImpv) this night,H3915 and it shall be in the morning,H1242 [that] if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman,H1350(QalImpf) well;H2896 let him do the kinsman’s part:H1350(QalImpf) but if he willH2654(QalImpf) not do the part of a kinsmanH1350(QalInf) to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsmanH1350(QalPerf) to thee, [as] the LordH3068 liveth:H2416 lie downH7901(QalImpv) until the morning.H1242 [14] And she layH7901(QalImpf) at his feetH4772 until the morning:H1242 and she rose upH6965(QalImpf) beforeH2958 oneH376 could knowH5234(HiphImpf) another.H7453 And he said,H559(QalImpf) Let it not be knownH3045(NiphImpf) that a womanH802 cameH935(QalPerf) into the floor.H1637 [15] Also he said,H559(QalImpf) BringH3051(QalImpv) the vailH4304 that [thou hast] upon thee, and holdH270(QalImpv) it. And when she heldH270(QalImpf) it, he measuredH4058(QalImpf) sixH8337 [measures] of barley,H8184 and laidH7896(QalImpf) [it] on her: and she wentH935(QalImpf) into the city.H5892 [16] And when she cameH935(QalImpf) to her mother in law,H2545 she said,H559(QalImpf) Who [art] thou, my daughter?H1323 And she toldH5046(HiphImpf) her all that the manH376 had doneH6213(QalPerf) to her. [17] And she said,H559(QalImpf) These sixH8337 [measures] of barleyH8184 gaveH5414(QalPerf) he me; for he saidH559(QalPerf) to me, GoH935(QalImpf) not emptyH7387 unto thy mother in law.H2545 [18] Then saidH559(QalImpf) she, Sit still,H3427(QalImpv) my daughter,H1323 until thou knowH3045(QalImpf) how the matterH1697 will fall:H5307(QalImpf) for the manH376 will not be in rest,H8252(QalImpf) untilH518 he have finishedH3615(PielPerf) the thingH1697 this day.H3117
