[1] In the days when the judges judged, there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to live in the country of Moab with his wife and his two sons. [2] The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi. The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab and lived there. [3] Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left with her two sons. [4] They took for themselves wives of the women of Moab. The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth. They lived there about ten years. [5] Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband. [6] Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab; for she had heard in the country of Moab how Yahweh§ had visited his people in giving them bread. [7] She went out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her. They went on the way to return to the land of Judah. [8] Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother’s house. May Yahweh deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. [9] May Yahweh grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.”Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices, and wept. [10] They said to her, “No, but we will return with you to your people.” [11] Naomi said, “Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? [12] Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, ‘I have hope,’ if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons, [13] would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me seriously for your sakes, for Yahweh’s hand has gone out against me.” [14] They lifted up their voices and wept again; then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth stayed with her. [15] She said, “Behold,§ your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.” [16] Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God§ my God. [17] Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May Yahweh do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.” [18] When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her. [19] So they both went until they came to Bethlehem. When they had come to Bethlehem, all the city was excited about them, and they asked, “Is this Naomi?” [20] She said to them, “Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. [21] I went out full, and Yahweh has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since Yahweh has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?” [22] So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab. They came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

[9] The LordH3068 grantH5414(QalImpf) you that ye may findH4672(QalImpv) rest,H4496 eachH802 [of you] in the houseH1004 of her husband.H376 Then she kissedH5401(QalImpf) them; and they lifted upH5375(QalImpf) their voice,H6963 and wept.H1058(QalImpf) [10] And they saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, Surely we will returnH7725(QalImpf) with thee unto thy people.H5971 [11] And NaomiH5281 said,H559(QalImpf) Turn again,H7725(QalImpv) my daughters:H1323 why will ye goH3212(QalImpf) with me? [are] there yet [any more] sonsH1121 in my womb,H4578 that they may be your husbands?H582 [12] Turn again,H7725(QalImpv) my daughters,H1323 goH3212(QalImpv) [your way]; for I am too oldH2204(QalPerf) to have an husband.H376 If I should say,H559(QalPerf) I haveH3426 hope,H8615 [if] I should have an husbandH376 also to night,H3915 and should also bearH3205(QalPerf) sons;H1121 [13] Would ye tarryH7663(PielImpf) for themH3860 till they were grown?H1431(QalImpf) would ye stayH5702(NiphImpf) for themH3860 from having husbands?H376 nay, my daughters;H1323 for it grievethH4843(QalPerf) me muchH3966 for your sakes that the handH3027 of the LordH3068 is gone outH3318(QalPerf) against me. [14] And they lifted upH5375(QalImpf) their voice,H6963 and wept again:H1058(QalImpf) and OrpahH6204 kissedH5401(QalImpf) her mother in law;H2545 but RuthH7327 claveH1692(QalPerf) unto her. [15] And she said,H559(QalImpf) Behold, thy sister in lawH2994 is gone backH7725(QalPerf) unto her people,H5971 and unto her gods:H430 returnH7725(QalImpv) thou afterH310 thy sister in law.H2994 [16] And RuthH7327 said,H559(QalImpf) IntreatH6293(QalImpf) me not to leaveH5800(QalInf) thee, [or] to returnH7725(QalInf) from following afterH310 thee: for whither thou goest,H3212(QalImpf) I will go;H3212(QalImpf) and where thou lodgest,H3885(QalImpf) I will lodge:H3885(QalImpf) thy peopleH5971 [shall be] my people,H5971 and thy GodH430 my God:H430 [17] Where thou diest,H4191(QalImpf) will I die,H4191(QalImpf) and there will I be buried:H6912(NiphImpf) the LordH3068 doH6213(QalImpf) so to me, and moreH3254(HiphImpf) also, [if ought] but deathH4194 partH6504(HiphImpf) thee and me. [18] When she sawH7200(QalImpf) that she was stedfastly mindedH553(HithPtc) to goH3212(QalInf) with her, then she leftH2308(QalImpf) speakingH1696(PielInf) unto her. [19] So they twoH8147 wentH3212(QalImpf) until they cameH935(QalInf) to Bethlehem.H1035 And it came to pass, when they were comeH935(QalInf) to Bethlehem,H1035 that all the cityH5892 was movedH1949(NiphImpf) about them, and they said,H559(QalImpf) [Is] this Naomi?H5281 [20] And she saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, CallH7121(QalImpf) me not Naomi,H5281 callH7121(QalImpv) me Mara:H4755 for the AlmightyH7706 hath dealt veryH3966 bitterlyH4843(HiphPerf) with me. [21] I went outH1980(QalPerf) full,H4392 and the LordH3068 hath brought me home againH7725(HiphPerf) empty:H7387 why [then] callH7121(QalImpf) ye me Naomi,H5281 seeing the LordH3068 hath testifiedH6030(QalPerf) against me, and the AlmightyH7706 hath afflictedH7489(HiphPerf) me? [22] So NaomiH5281 returned,H7725(QalImpf) and RuthH7327 the Moabitess,H4125 her daughter in law,H3618 with her, which returnedH7725(QalPerf) out of the countryH7704 of Moab:H4124 and they cameH935(QalPerf) to BethlehemH1035 in the beginningH8462 of barleyH8184 harvest.H7105
