2 Kings 1 (WEBP)

[1] Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.
[2] Ahaziah fell down through the lattice in his upper room that was in Samaria, and was sick. So he sent messengers, and said to them, “Go, inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover of this sickness.”
[3] But Yahweh’s° angel said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and tell them, ‘Is it because there is no God§ in Israel that you go to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron?
[4] Now therefore Yahweh says, “You will not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but you will surely die.” ’ ” Then Elijah departed.
[5] The messengers returned to him, and he said to them, “Why is it that you have returned?”
[6] They said to him, “A man came up to meet us, and said to us, ‘Go, return to the king who sent you, and tell him, “Yahweh says, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you send to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but you will surely die.’ ” ’ ”
[7] He said to them, “What kind of man was he who came up to meet you and told you these words?”
[8] They answered him, “He was a hairy man, and wearing a leather belt around his waist.” He said, “It’s Elijah the Tishbite.”
[9] Then the king sent a captain of fifty with his fifty to him. He went up to him; and behold,§ he was sitting on the top of the hill. He said to him, “Man of God, the king has said, ‘Come down!’ ”
[10] Elijah answered to the captain of fifty, “If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from the sky and consume you and your fifty!” Then fire came down from the sky, and consumed him and his fifty.
[11] Again he sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty. He answered him, “Man of God, the king has said, ‘Come down quickly!’ ”
[12] Elijah answered them, “If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from the sky and consume you and your fifty!” Then God’s fire came down from the sky, and consumed him and his fifty.
[13] Again he sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. The third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and begged him, and said to him, “Man of God, please let my life and the life of these fifty of your servants be precious in your sight.
[14] Behold, fire came down from the sky and consumed the last two captains of fifty with their fifties. But now let my life be precious in your sight.”
[15] Yahweh’s angel said to Elijah, “Go down with him. Don’t be afraid of him.” Then he arose and went down with him to the king.
[16] He said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron, is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word? Therefore you will not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but you will surely die.’ ”
[17] So he died according to Yahweh’s word which Elijah had spoken. Jehoram began to reign in his place in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, because he had no son.
[18] Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

2 Kings 1:3a “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations.
2 Kings 1:3b The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).
2 Kings 1:9 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

2 Kings 1 (KJVS)

[1] Then Moab H4124 rebelled H6586 (8799) against Israel H3478 after H310 the death H4194 of Ahab H256.
[2] And Ahaziah H274 fell down H5307 (8799) through a lattice H7639 in his upper chamber H5944 that [was] in Samaria H8111, and was sick H2470 (8799): and he sent H7971 (8799) messengers H4397, and said H559 (8799) unto them, Go H3212 (8798), enquire H1875 (8798) of Baalzebub H1176 the god H430 of Ekron H6138 whether I shall recover H2421 (8799) of this disease H2483.
[3] But the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 said H1696 (8765) to Elijah H452 the Tishbite H8664, Arise H6965 (8798), go up H5927 (8798) to meet H7125 (8800) the messengers H4397 of the king H4428 of Samaria H8111, and say H1696 (8761) unto them, [Is it] not because [there is] not a God H430 in Israel H3478, [that] ye go H1980 (8802) to enquire H1875 (8800) of Baalzebub H1176 the god H430 of Ekron H6138?
[4] Now therefore thus saith H559 (8804) the LORD H3068, Thou shalt not come down H3381 (8799) from that bed H4296 on which thou art gone up H5927 (8804), but shalt surely H4191 (8800) die H4191 (8799). And Elijah H452 departed H3212 (8799).
[5] And when the messengers H4397 turned back H7725 (8799) unto him, he said H559 (8799) unto them, Why are ye now H2088 turned back H7725 (8804)?
[6] And they said H559 (8799) unto him, There came H5927 a man H376 up H5927 (8804) to meet H7125 (8800) us, and said H559 (8799) unto us, Go H3212 (8798), turn again H7725 (8798) unto the king H4428 that sent H7971 (8804) you, and say H1696 (8765) unto him, Thus saith H559 (8804) the LORD H3068, [Is it] not because [there is] not a God H430 in Israel H3478, [that] thou sendest H7971 (8802) to enquire H1875 (8800) of Baalzebub H1176 the god H430 of Ekron H6138? therefore thou shalt not come down H3381 (8799) from that bed H4296 on which thou art gone up H5927 (8804), but shalt surely H4191 (8800) die H4191 (8799).
[7] And he said H1696 (8762) unto them, What manner H4941 of man H376 [was he] which came up H5927 (8804) to meet H7125 (8800) you, and told H1696 (8762) you these words H1697?
[8] And they answered H559 (8799) him, [He was] an hairy H8181 man H1167 H376, and girt H247 (8803) with a girdle H232 of leather H5785 about his loins H4975. And he said H559 (8799), It [is] Elijah H452 the Tishbite H8664.
[9] Then the king H4428 sent H7971 (8799) unto him a captain H8269 of fifty H2572 with his fifty H2572. And he went up H5927 (8799) to him: and, behold, he sat H3427 (8802) on the top H7218 of an hill H2022. And he spake H1696 (8762) unto him, Thou man H376 of God H430, the king H4428 hath said H1696 (8765), Come down H3381 (8798).
[10] And Elijah H452 answered H6030 (8799) and said H1696 (8762) to the captain H8269 of fifty H2572, If I [be] a man H376 of God H430, then let fire H784 come down H3381 (8799) from heaven H8064, and consume H398 (8799) thee and thy fifty H2572. And there came down H3381 (8799) fire H784 from heaven H8064, and consumed H398 (8799) him and his fifty H2572.
[11] Again H7725 (8799) also he sent H7971 (8799) unto him another H312 captain H8269 of fifty H2572 with his fifty H2572. And he answered H6030 (8799) and said H1696 (8762) unto him, O man H376 of God H430, thus hath the king H4428 said H559 (8804), Come down H3381 (8798) quickly H4120.
[12] And Elijah H452 answered H6030 (8799) and said H1696 (8762) unto them, If I [be] a man H376 of God H430, let fire H784 come down H3381 (8799) from heaven H8064, and consume H398 (8799) thee and thy fifty H2572. And the fire H784 of God H430 came down H3381 (8799) from heaven H8064, and consumed H398 (8799) him and his fifty H2572.
[13] And he sent H7971 (8799) again H7725 (8799) a captain H8269 of the third H7992 fifty H2572 with his fifty H2572. And the third H7992 captain H8269 of fifty H2572 went up H5927 (8799), and came H935 (8799) and fell H3766 (8799) on his knees H1290 before H5048 Elijah H452, and besought H2603 (8691) him, and said H1696 (8762) unto him, O man H376 of God H430, I pray thee, let my life H5315, and the life H5315 of these fifty H2572 thy servants H5650, be precious H3365 (8799) in thy sight H5869.
[14] Behold, there came H3381 fire H784 down H3381 (8804) from heaven H8064, and burnt up H398 (8799) the two H8147 captains H8269 of the former H7223 fifties H2572 with their fifties H2572: therefore let my life H5315 now be precious H3365 (8799) in thy sight H5869.
[15] And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 said H1696 (8762) unto Elijah H452, Go down H3381 (8798) with him: be not afraid H3372 (8799) of him H6440. And he arose H6965 (8799), and went down H3381 (8799) with him unto the king H4428.
[16] And he said H1696 (8762) unto him, Thus saith H559 (8804) the LORD H3068, Forasmuch as thou hast sent H7971 (8804) messengers H4397 to enquire H1875 (8800) of Baalzebub H1176 the god H430 of Ekron H6138, [is it] not because [there is] no God H430 in Israel H3478 to enquire H1875 (8800) of his word H1697? therefore thou shalt not come down H3381 (8799) off that bed H4296 on which thou art gone up H5927 (8804), but shalt surely H4191 (8800) die H4191 (8799).
[17] So he died H4191 (8799) according to the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 which Elijah H452 had spoken H1696 (8765). And Jehoram H3088 reigned H4427 (8799) in his stead in the second H8147 year H8141 of Jehoram H3088 the son H1121 of Jehoshaphat H3092 king H4428 of Judah H3063; because he had no son H1121.
[18] Now the rest H3499 of the acts H1697 of Ahaziah H274 which he did H6213 (8804), [are] they not written H3789 (8803) in the book H5612 of the chronicles H1697 H3117 of the kings H4428 of Israel H3478?

Young’s Literal Translation

2 Kings 1 (YLT)

[1] And Moab transgresseth against Israel after the death of Ahab,
[2] and Ahaziah falleth through the lattice in his upper chamber that is in Samaria, and is sick, and sendeth messengers, and saith unto them, ‘Go ye, inquire of Baal-Zebub god of Ekron if I recover from this sickness.’
[3] And a messenger of Jehovah hath spoken unto Elijah the Tishbite, ‘Rise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and speak unto them, Is it because there is not a God in Israel-ye are going to inquire of Baal Zebub god of Ekron?
[4] and therefore, thus said Jehovah, The bed whither thou hast gone up, thou dost not come down from it, for thou dost certainly die;’ and Elijah goeth on.
[5] And the messengers turn back unto him, and he saith unto them, ‘What is this-ye have turned back!’
[6] And they say unto him, ‘A man hath come up to meet us, and saith unto us, Go, turn back unto the king who sent you, and ye have said unto him, Thus said Jehovah, Is it because there is not a God in Israel-thou art sending to inquire of Baal-Zebub god of Ekron? therefore, the bed whither thou hast gone up, thou dost not come down from it, for thou dost certainly die.’
[7] And he saith unto them, ‘What is the fashion of the man who hath come up to meet you, and speaketh unto you these words?’
[8] And they say unto him, ‘A man-hairy, and a girdle of skin girt about his loins;’ and he saith, ‘He is Elijah the Tishbite.’
[9] And he sendeth unto him a head of fifty and his fifty, and he goeth up unto him (and lo, he is sitting on the top of the hill), and he speaketh unto him, ‘O man of God, the king hath spoken, Come down.’
[10] And Elijah answereth and speaketh unto the head of the fifty, ‘And if I am a man of God, fire doth come down from the heavens, and consume thee and thy fifty;’ and fire cometh down from the heavens, and consumeth him and his fifty.
[11] And he turneth and sendeth unto him another head of fifty and his fifty, and he answereth and speaketh unto him, ‘O man of God, thus said the king, Haste, come down.’
[12] And Elijah answereth and speaketh unto them, ‘If I am a man of God, fire doth come down from the heavens, and consume thee and thy fifty;’ and fire of God cometh down from the heavens, and consumeth him and his fifty.
[13] And he turneth and sendeth a third head of fifty and his fifty, and the third head of fifty goeth up, and cometh in, and boweth on his knees over-against Elijah, and maketh supplication unto him, and speaketh unto him, ‘O man of God, let be precious, I pray thee, my soul and the soul of thy servants-these fifty-in thine eyes.
[14] Lo, come down hath fire from the heavens, and consumeth the two heads of the former fifties and their fifties; and, now, let my soul be precious in thine eyes.’
[15] And a messenger of Jehovah speaketh unto Elijah, ‘Go down with him, be not afraid of him;’ and he riseth and goeth down with him unto the king,
[16] and speaketh unto him, ‘Thus said Jehovah, Because that thou hast sent messengers to inquire of Baal-Zebub god of Ekron-is it because there is not a God in Israel to inquire of His word? therefore, the bed whither thou hast gone up-thou dost not come down from it, for thou dost certainly die.’
[17] And he dieth, according to the word of Jehovah that Elijah spake, and Jehoram reigneth in his stead, in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, for he had no son.
[18] And the rest of the matters of Ahaziah that he did, are they not written on the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?
