But of those who escape, they will escape and will be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them moaning, everyone in his iniquity.

Seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel stood before them. In the middle of them Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan stood, every man with his censer in his hand; and the smell of the cloud of incense went up.

And there stood H5975 (QalActPtc) before H6440 them seventy H7657 men H376 of the ancients H2205 of the house H1004 of Israel, H3478 and in the midst H8432 of them stood H5975 (QalActPtc) Jaazaniah H2970 the son H1121 of Shaphan, H8227 with every man H376 his censer H4730 in his hand; H3027 and a thick H6282 cloud H6051 of incense H7004 went up. and seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel-and Jaazaniah son of Shaphan standing in their midst-are standing before them, and each his censer in his hand, and the abundance of the cloud of perfume is going up.

Then he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in his rooms of imagery? For they say, ‘Yahweh doesn’t see us. Yahweh has forsaken the land.’ ”

Then said H559 (QalImpf) he unto me, Son H1121 of man, H120 hast thou seen H7200 (QalPerf) what the ancients H2205 of the house H1004 of Israel H3478 do H6213 (QalActPtc) in the dark, H2822 every man H376 in the chambers H2315 of his imagery? H4906 for they say, H559 (QalActPtc) The Lord H3068 seeth H7200 (QalActPtc) us not; the Lord H3068 hath forsaken H5800 (QalPerf) the earth. H776

And He saith unto me, ‘Hast thou seen, son of man, that which elders of the house of Israel are doing in darkness, each in the inner chambers of his imagery, for they are saying, Jehovah is not seeing us, Jehovah hath forsaken the land?’

He brought me into the inner court of Yahweh’s house; and I saw at the door of Yahweh’s temple, between the porch and the altar, there were about twenty-five men with their backs toward Yahweh’s temple and their faces toward the east. They were worshiping the sun toward the east.

And he brought H935 (HiphImpf) me into the inner H6442 court H2691 of the Lord’s H3068 house, H1004 and, behold, at the door H6607 of the temple H1964 of the Lord, H3068 between the porch H197 and the altar, H4196 [were] about five H2568 and twenty H6242 men, H376 with their backs H268 toward the temple H1964 of the Lord, H3068 and their faces H6440 toward the east; H6924 and they worshipped H7812 (HithPtc) the sun H8121 toward the east. And He bringeth me in unto the inner court of the house of Jehovah, and lo, at the opening of the temple of Jehovah, between the porch and the altar, about twenty-five men, their backs toward the temple of Jehovah, and their faces eastward, and they are bowing themselves eastward to the sun.

Then he cried in my ears with a loud voice, saying, “Cause those who are in charge of the city to draw near, each man with his destroying weapon in his hand.”

He cried H7121 (QalImpf) also in mine ears H241 with a loud H1419 voice, H6963 saying, H559 (QalInf) Cause them that have charge H6486 over the city H5892 to draw near, H7126 (QalPerf) even every man H376 [with] his destroying H4892 weapon H3627 in his hand. H3027

And He crieth in mine ears-a loud voice-saying, ‘Drawn near have inspectors of the city, and each his destroying weapon in his hand.’

Behold, six men came from the way of the upper gate, which lies toward the north, every man with his slaughter weapon in his hand. One man in the middle of them was clothed in linen, with a writer’s inkhorn by his side. They went in, and stood beside the bronze altar.

And, behold, six H8337 men H582 came H935 (QalActPtc) from the way H1870 of the higher H5945 gate, H8179 which lieth H6437 (HophPtc) toward the north, H6828 and every man H376 a slaughter H4660 weapon H3627 in his hand; H3027 and one H259 man H376 among H8432 them [was] clothed H3847 (QalPasPtc) with linen, H906 with a writer’s H5608 (QalActPtc) inkhorn H7083 by his side: H4975 and they went in, H935 (QalImpf) and stood H5975 (QalImpf) beside H681 the brasen H5178 altar. And lo, six men are coming from the way of the upper gate, that is facing the north, and each his slaughter-weapon in his hand, and one man in their midst is clothed with linen, and a scribe’s inkhorn at his loins, and they come in, and stand near the brazen altar.

The glory of the God of Israel went up from the cherub, whereupon it was, to the threshold of the house; and he called to the man clothed in linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn by his side.

And the glory H3519 of the God H430 of Israel H3478 was gone up H5927 (NiphPerf) from the cherub, H3742 whereupon he was, to the threshold H4670 of the house. And the honour of the God of Israel hath gone up from off the cherub, on which it hath been, unto the threshold of the house.

Yahweh said to him, “Go through the middle of the city, through the middle of Jerusalem, and set a mark on the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry over all the abominations that are done within it.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Go through H5674 (QalImpv) the midst H8432 of the city, H5892 through the midst H8432 of Jerusalem, H3389 and set H8427 (HiphPerf) a mark H8420 upon the foreheads H4696 of the men H582 that sigh H584 (NiphPtc) and that cry H602 (NiphPtc) for all the abominations H8441 that be done H6213 (NiphPtc) in the midst H8432 thereof.

And He calleth unto the man who is clothed with linen, who hath the scribe’s inkhorn at his loins, and Jehovah saith unto him, ‘Pass on into the midst of the city, into the midst of Jerusalem, and thou hast made a mark on the foreheads of the men who are sighing and who are groaning for all the abominations that are done in its midst.’

Kill utterly the old man, the young man, the virgin, little children and women; but don’t come near any man on whom is the mark. Begin at my sanctuary.” Then they began at the old men who were before the house.

Slay H2026 (QalImpf) utterly H4889 old H2205 [and] young, H970 both maids, H1330 and little children, H2945 and women: H802 but come not near H5066 (QalImpf) any man H376 upon whom [is] the mark; H8420 and begin H2490 (HiphImpf) at my sanctuary. H4720 Then they began H2490 (HiphImpf) at the ancient H2205 men H582 which [were] before H6440 the house. H1004

aged, young man, and virgin, and infant, and women, ye do slay-to destruction; and against any man on whom is the mark ye do not go nigh, and from My sanctuary ye begin.’

Behold, the man clothed in linen, who had the inkhorn by his side, reported the matter, saying, “I have done as you have commanded me.”

And, behold, the man H376 clothed H3847 (QalPasPtc) with linen, H906 which [had] the inkhorn H7083 by his side, H4975 reported H7725 (HiphPtc) the matter, H1697 saying, H559 (QalInf) I have done H6213 (QalPerf) as thou hast commanded H6680 (PielPerf) me.

And lo, the man clothed with linen, at whose loins is the inkhorn, is bringing back word, saying, ‘I have done as Thou hast commanded me.’

He spoke to the man clothed in linen, and said, “Go in between the whirling wheels, even under the cherub, and fill both your hands with coals of fire from between the cherubim, and scatter them over the city.” He went in as I watched.

And He speaketh unto the man clothed with linen, and saith, ‘Go in unto the midst of the wheel, unto the place of the cherub, and fill thy hands with coals of fire from between the cherubs, and scatter over the city.’ And he goeth in before mine eyes.

Now the cherubim stood on the right side of the house when the man went in; and the cloud filled the inner court.

Now the cherubims H3742 stood H5975 (QalActPtc) on the right side H3225 of the house, H1004 when the man H376 went in; H935 (QalInf) and the cloud H6051 filled H4390 (QalPerf) the inner H6442 court. H2691

And the cherubs are standing on the right side of the house, at the going in of the man, and the cloud hath filled the inner court,

It came to pass, when he commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, “Take fire from between the whirling wheels, from between the cherubim,” that he went in and stood beside a wheel.

And it came to pass, [that] when he had commanded H6680 (PielInf) the man H376 clothed H3847 (QalPasPtc) with linen, H906 saying, H559 (QalInf) Take H3947 (QalImpv) fire H784 from between the wheels, H1534 from between the cherubims; H3742 then he went in, H935 (QalImpf) and stood H5975 (QalImpf) beside H681 the wheels. And it cometh to pass, in His commanding the man clothed with linen, saying, ‘Take fire from between the wheel, from between the cherubs,’ and he goeth in and standeth near the wheel,

As for the likeness of their faces, they were the faces which I saw by the river Chebar, their appearances and themselves. They each went straight forward.

And the likeness H1823 of their faces H6440 [was] the same H1992 faces H6440 which I saw H7200 (QalPerf) by the river H5104 of Chebar, H3529 their appearances H4758 and themselves: they went H3212 (QalImpf) every one H376 straight H5676 forward. H6440

As to the likeness of their faces, they are the faces that I saw by the river Chebar, their appearances and themselves; each straight forward they go.

Moreover the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of Yahweh’s house, which looks eastward. Behold, twenty-five men were at the door of the gate; and I saw among them Jaazaniah the son of Azzur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, princes of the people.

And lift me up doth a spirit, and it bringeth me in unto the east gate of the house of Jehovah, that is facing the east, and lo, at the opening of the gate twenty and five men, and I see in their midst Jaazaniah son of Azzur, and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, heads of the people.

He said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who devise iniquity, and who give wicked counsel in this city;

Then said H559 (QalImpf) he unto me, Son H1121 of man, H120 these [are] the men H582 that devise H2803 (QalActPtc) mischief, H205 and give H3289 (QalActPtc) wicked H7451 counsel H6098 in this city: H5892

And He saith unto me, ‘Son of man, these are the men who are devising iniquity, and who are giving evil counsel in this city;

“Son of man, your brothers, even your brothers, the men of your relatives, and all the house of Israel, all of them, are the ones to whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, ‘Go far away from Yahweh. This land has been given to us for a possession.’

‘Son of man, thy brethren, thy brethren, men of thy kindred, and all the house of Israel-all of it, are they to whom inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, Keep far off from Jehovah;

Then some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat before me.

Then came H935 (QalImpf) certain H582 of the elders H2205 of Israel H3478 unto me, and sat H3427 (QalImpf) before H6440 me.

And come in unto me do certain of the elders of Israel, and sit before me.

“Son of man, these men have taken their idols into their heart, and put the stumbling block of their iniquity before their face. Should I be inquired of at all by them?

Son H1121 of man, H120 these men H582 have set up H5927 (HiphPerf) their idols H1544 in their heart, H3820 and put H5414 (QalPerf) the stumblingblock H4383 of their iniquity H5771 before H5227 their face: H6440 should I be enquired H1875 (NiphImpf) of at all H1875 (NiphInf) by them?

‘Son of man, these men have caused their idols to go up on their heart, and the stumbling-block of their iniquity they have put over-against their faces; am I inquired of at all by them?

Therefore speak to them and tell them, ‘The Lord Yahweh says: “Every man of the house of Israel who takes his idols into his heart and puts the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face then comes to the prophet, I Yahweh will answer him there according to the multitude of his idols,

Therefore speak H1696 (PielImpv) unto them, and say H559 (QalPerf) unto them, Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H136 God; H3069 Every man H376 of the house H1004 of Israel H3478 that setteth up H5927 (HiphImpf) his idols H1544 in his heart, H3820 and putteth H7760 (QalImpf) the stumblingblock H4383 of his iniquity H5771 before H5227 his face, H6440 and cometh H935 (QalPerf) to the prophet; H5030 I the Lord H3068 will answer H6030 (NiphPerf) him that cometh H935 (QalPerf) according to the multitude H7230 of his idols; H1544

‘Therefore, speak with them, and thou hast said unto them: Thus said the Lord Jehovah: Every one of the house of Israel who causeth his idols to go up unto his heart, and the stumbling-block of his iniquity setteth over-against his face, and hath gone in unto the prophet-I Jehovah have given an answer to him for this, for the abundance of his idols,

“ ‘ “For everyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who live in Israel, who separates himself from me and takes his idols into his heart, and puts the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet to inquire for himself of me, I Yahweh will answer him by myself.

For every one H376 of the house H1004 of Israel, H3478 or of the stranger H1616 that sojourneth H1481 (QalImpf) in Israel, H3478 which separateth H5144 (NiphImpf) himself from me, H310 and setteth up H5927 (QalImpf) his idols H1544 in his heart, H3820 and putteth H7760 (QalImpf) the stumblingblock H4383 of his iniquity H5771 before H5227 his face, H6440 and cometh H935 (QalPerf) to a prophet H5030 to enquire H1875 (QalInf) of him concerning me; I the Lord H3068 will answer H6030 (NiphPtc) him by myself:

for every one of the house of Israel, and of the sojourners who doth sojourn in Israel, who is separated from after Me, and doth cause his idols to go up unto his heart, and the stumbling-block of his iniquity setteth over-against his face, and hath come in unto the prophet to inquire of him concerning Me, I, Jehovah, have answered him for Myself;

I will set my face against that man and will make him an astonishment, for a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from among my people. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.

And I will set H5414 (QalPerf) my face H6440 against that man, H376 and will make H8074 (HiphPerf) him a sign H226 and a proverb, H4912 and I will cut him off H3772 (HiphPerf) from the midst H8432 of my people; H5971 and ye shall know H3045 (QalPerf) that I [am] the Lord. H3068

and I have set My face against that man, and made him for a sign, and for similes, and I have cut him off from the midst of My people, and ye have known that I am Jehovah.

though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver only their own souls by their righteousness,” says the Lord Yahweh.

Though these three H7969 men, H582 Noah, H5146 Daniel, H1840 and Job, H347 were in it, H8432 they should deliver H5337 (PielImpf) [but] their own souls H5315 by their righteousness, H6666 saith H5002 (QalPasPtc) the Lord H136 God. H3069

and these three men have been in its midst, Noah, Daniel, and Job-they by their righteousness deliver their own soul-an affirmation of the Lord Jehovah.

though these three men were in it, as I live,” says the Lord Yahweh, “they would deliver neither sons nor daughters. They only would be delivered, but the land would be desolate.

[Though] these three H7969 men H582 [were] in it, H8432 [as] I live, H2416 saith H5002 (QalPasPtc) the Lord H136 God, H3069 they shall deliver H5337 (HiphImpf) neither sons H1121 nor daughters; H1323 they only shall be delivered, H5337 (NiphImpf) but the land H776 shall be desolate. H8077

these three men in its midst: I live-an affirmation of the Lord Jehovah-neither sons nor daughters do they deliver; they alone are delivered, and the land is a desolation.

though these three men were in it, as I live,” says the Lord Yahweh, “they would deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only would be delivered themselves.

and these three men in its midst: I live-an affirmation of the Lord Jehovah-they deliver not sons and daughters, for they alone are delivered.

“ ‘ “Adulterous wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband!

[But as] a wife H802 that committeth adultery, H5003 (PielPtc) [which] taketh H3947 (QalImpf) strangers H2114 (QalPtc) instead of her husband! H376

The wife who committeth adultery- Under her husband-doth receive strangers.

You are the daughter of your mother, who loathes her husband and her children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite.

Thou [art] thy mother’s H517 daughter, H1323 that lotheth H1602 (QalActPtc) her husband H376 and her children; H1121 and thou [art] the sister H269 of thy sisters, H269 which lothed H1602 (QalPerf) their husbands H582 and their children: H1121 your mother H517 [was] an Hittite, H2850 and your father H1 an Amorite. H567

Thy mother’s daughter thou art, Loathing her husband and her sons, And thy sisters’ sister thou art, Who loathed their husbands and their sons, Your mother is a Hittite, and your father an Amorite.

“But if a man is just, and does that which is lawful and right,

But if a man H376 be just, H6662 and do H6213 (QalPerf) that which is lawful H4941 and right, H6666

And a man, when he is righteous, And hath done judgment and righteousness,

and has not wronged any, but has restored to the debtor his pledge, has taken nothing by robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;

And hath not oppressed H3238 (HiphImpf) any, H376 [but] hath restored H7725 (HiphImpf) to the debtor H2326 his pledge, H2258 hath spoiled H1497 (QalImpf) none by violence, H1500 hath given H5414 (QalImpf) his bread H3899 to the hungry, H7457 and hath covered H3680 (PielImpf) the naked H5903 with a garment; H899

A man-he doth not oppress, His pledge to the debtor he doth return, Plunder he doth not take away, His bread to the hungry he doth give, And the naked doth cover with a garment,

he who hasn’t lent to them with interest, hasn’t taken any increase from them, who has withdrawn his hand from iniquity, has executed true justice between man and man,

He [that] hath not given forth H5414 (QalImpf) upon usury, H5392 neither hath taken H3947 (QalImpf) any increase, H8636 [that] hath withdrawn H7725 (HiphImpf) his hand H3027 from iniquity, H5766 hath executed H6213 (QalImpf) true H571 judgment H4941 between man H376 and man, H376

In usury he doth not give, and increase taketh not, From perversity he turneth back his hand, True judgment he doth between man and man.

hasn’t wronged any, hasn’t taken anything to pledge, hasn’t taken by robbery, but has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment;

A man-he hath not oppressed, A pledge he hath not bound, And plunder he hath not taken away, His bread to the hungry he hath given, And the naked he covered with a garment,

“Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways,” says the Lord Yahweh. “Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions, so iniquity will not be your ruin.

Therefore I will judge H8199 (QalImpf) you, O house H1004 of Israel, H3478 every one H376 according to his ways, H1870 saith H5002 (QalPasPtc) the Lord H136 God. H3069 Repent, H7725 (QalImpv) and turn H7725 (HiphImpv) [yourselves] from all your transgressions; H6588 so iniquity H5771 shall not be your ruin. H4383

Therefore, each according to his ways I judge you, O house of Israel? An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, Turn ye back, yea, turn yourselves back, From all your transgressions, And iniquity is not to you for a stumbling-block,

In the seventh year, in the fifth month, the tenth day of the month, some of the elders of Israel came to inquire of Yahweh, and sat before me.

And it came to pass in the seventh H7637 year, H8141 in the fifth H2549 [month], the tenth H6218 [day] of the month, H2320 [that] certain H582 of the elders H2205 of Israel H3478 came H935 (QalPerf) to enquire H1875 (QalInf) of the Lord, H3068 and sat H3427 (QalImpf) before H6440 me.

And it cometh to pass, in the seventh year, in the fifth month, in the tenth of the month, come in have certain of the elders of Israel to seek Jehovah, and they sit before me;

I said to them, ‘Each of you throw away the abominations of his eyes. Don’t defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am Yahweh your God.’

Then said H559 (QalImpf) I unto them, Cast ye away H7993 (HiphImpv) every man H376 the abominations H8251 of his eyes, H5869 and defile H2930 (HithImpf) not yourselves with the idols H1544 of Egypt: H4714 I [am] the Lord H3068 your God. H430

And I say unto them, Let each cast away the detestable things of his eyes, And with the idols of Egypt be not defiled, I am Jehovah your God.

“ ‘ “But they rebelled against me and wouldn’t listen to me. They didn’t all throw away the abominations of their eyes. They also didn’t forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said I would pour out my wrath on them, to accomplish my anger against them in the middle of the land of Egypt.

But they rebelled H4784 (HiphImpf) against me, and would H14 (QalPerf) not hearken H8085 (QalInf) unto me: they did not every man H376 cast away H7993 (HiphPerf) the abominations H8251 of their eyes, H5869 neither did they forsake H5800 (QalPerf) the idols H1544 of Egypt: H4714 then I said, H559 (QalImpf) I will pour out H8210 (QalInf) my fury H2534 upon them, to accomplish H3615 (PielInf) my anger H639 against them in the midst H8432 of the land H776 of Egypt. And-they rebel against Me, And have not been willing to hearken to Me, Each, the detestable things of their eyes, They have not cast away, And the idols of Egypt have not forsaken, And I say-to pour out My fury on them, To complete Mine anger against them, In the midst of the land of Egypt.

“ ‘As for you, house of Israel, the Lord Yahweh says: “Go, everyone serve his idols, and hereafter also, if you will not listen to me; but you shall no more profane my holy name with your gifts and with your idols.

As for you, O house H1004 of Israel, H3478 thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H136 God; H3069 Go H3212 (QalImpv) ye, serve H5647 (QalImpv) ye every one H376 his idols, H1544 and hereafter H310 [also], if ye will not hearken H8085 (QalActPtc) unto me: but pollute H2490 (PielImpf) ye my holy H6944 name H8034 no more with your gifts, H4979 and with your idols. H1544

And ye, O house of Israel, thus said the Lord Jehovah: Each his idols-go-serve ye, And, afterwards, if ye are not hearkening to me, And My holy name ye do not pollute any more by your gifts, and by your idols.

I will pour out my indignation on you. I will blow on you with the fire of my wrath. I will deliver you into the hand of brutish men, skillful to destroy.

And I will pour out H8210 (QalPerf) mine indignation H2195 upon thee, I will blow H6315 (HiphImpf) against thee in the fire H784 of my wrath, H5678 and deliver H5414 (QalPerf) thee into the hand H3027 of brutish H1197 (QalActPtc) men, H582 [and] skilful H2796 to destroy. H4889

One has committed abomination with his neighbor’s wife, and another has lewdly defiled his daughter-in-law. Another in you has humbled his sister, his father’s daughter.

And each with the wife of his neighbour hath done abomination, And each his daughter-in-law hath defiled through wickedness, And each his sister, his father’s daughter, hath humbled in thee.

“I sought for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I would not destroy it; but I found no one.

Righteous men will judge them with the judgment of adulteresses and with the judgment of women who shed blood, because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands.

Sigh, but not aloud. Make no mourning for the dead. Bind your headdress on you, and put your sandals on your feet. Don’t cover your lips, and don’t eat mourner’s bread.”
