“Be strong and courageous; for you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.

ισχυε και ανδριζου συ γαρ αποδιαστελεις τω λαω τουτω την γην ην ωμοσα τοις πατρασιν υμων δουναι αυτοις

Now therefore, please swear to me by Yahweh, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a true sign;

και νυν ομοσατε μοι κυριον τον θεον οτι ποιω υμιν ελεος και ποιησετε και υμεις ελεος εν τω οικω του πατρος μου

and that you will save alive my father, my mother, my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.”

He spoke to the children of Israel, saying, “When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean?’

λεγων οταν ερωτωσιν υμας οι υιοι υμων λεγοντες τι εισιν οι λιθοι ουτοι

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness until all the nation, even the men of war who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn’t listen to Yahweh’s voice. Yahweh swore to them that he wouldn’t let them see the land which Yahweh swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

These are the inheritances which the children of Israel took in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed to them,

και ουτοι οι κατακληρονομησαντες υιων ισραηλ εν τη γη χανααν οις κατεκληρονομησεν αυτοις ελεαζαρ ο ιερευς και ιησους ο του ναυη και οι αρχοντες πατριων φυλων των υιων ισραηλ

He gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of Yahweh to Joshua, even Kiriath Arba, named after the father of Anak (also called Hebron).

και τω χαλεβ υιω ιεφοννη εδωκεν μεριδα εν μεσω υιων ιουδα δια προσταγματος του θεου και εδωκεν αυτω ιησους την πολιν αρβοκ μητροπολιν ενακ αυτη εστιν χεβρων

When she came, she had him ask her father for a field. She got off her donkey, and Caleb said, “What do you want?”

και εγενετο εν τω εισπορευεσθαι αυτην και συνεβουλευσατο αυτω λεγουσα αιτησομαι τον πατερα μου αγρον και εβοησεν εκ του ονου και ειπεν αυτη χαλεβ τι εστιν σοι

They came to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the princes, saying, “Yahweh commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” Therefore according to the commandment of Yahweh he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.

και εστησαν εναντιον ελεαζαρ του ιερεως και εναντιον ιησου και εναντιον των αρχοντων λεγουσαι ο θεος ενετειλατο δια χειρος μωυση δουναι ημιν κληρονομιαν εν μεσω των αδελφων ημων και εδοθη αυταις δια προσταγματος κυριου κληρος εν τοις αδελφοις του πατρος αυτων

Joshua said to the children of Israel, “How long will you neglect to go in to possess the land, which Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has given you?

The border of the children of Dan went out beyond them; for the children of Dan went up and fought against Leshem, and took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and lived therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their forefather.

These are the inheritances, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance by lot in Shiloh before Yahweh, at the door of the Tent of Meeting. So they finished dividing the land.

These [are] the inheritances, H5159 which Eleazar H499 the priest, H3548 and Joshua H3091 the son H1121 of Nun, H5126 and the heads H7218 of the fathers H1 of the tribes H4294 of the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 divided for an inheritance H5157 (PielPerf) by lot H1486 in Shiloh H7887 before H6440 the Lord, H3068 at the door H6607 of the tabernacle H168 of the congregation. αυται αι διαιρεσεις ας κατεκληρονομησεν ελεαζαρ ο ιερευς και ιησους ο του ναυη και οι αρχοντες των πατριων εν ταις φυλαις ισραηλ κατα κληρους εν σηλω εναντιον κυριου παρα τας θυρας της σκηνης του μαρτυριου και επορευθησαν εμβατευσαι την γην

Then the heads of fathers’ houses of the Levites came near to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of fathers’ houses of the tribes of the children of Israel.

και προσηλθοσαν οι αρχιπατριωται των υιων λευι προς ελεαζαρ τον ιερεα και προς ιησουν τον του ναυη και προς τους αρχιφυλους πατριων εκ των φυλων ισραηλ

They gave them Kiriath Arba, named after the father of Anak (also called Hebron), in the hill country of Judah, with its pasture lands around it.

And they gave H5414 (QalImpf) them the city H7151 of Arba H704 (QK) H7153 the father H1 of Anak, H6061 which [city is] Hebron, H2275 in the hill H2022 [country] of Judah, H3063 with the suburbs H4054 thereof round about H5439 it.

και εδωκεν αυτοις την καριαθαρβοκ μητροπολιν των ενακ αυτη εστιν χεβρων εν τω ορει ιουδα τα δε περισπορια κυκλω αυτης

So Yahweh gave to Israel all the land which he swore to give to their fathers. They possessed it, and lived in it.

And the Lord H3068 gave H5414 (QalImpf) unto Israel H3478 all the land H776 which he sware H7650 (NiphPerf) to give H5414 (QalInf) unto their fathers; H1 and they possessed H3423 (QalImpf) it, and dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) therein.

και εδωκεν κυριος τω ισραηλ πασαν την γην ην ωμοσεν δουναι τοις πατρασιν αυτων και κατεκληρονομησαν αυτην και κατωκησαν εν αυτη

Yahweh gave them rest all around, according to all that he swore to their fathers. Not a man of all their enemies stood before them. Yahweh delivered all their enemies into their hand.

And the Lord H3068 gave them rest H5117 (QalImpf) round about, H5439 according to all that he sware H7650 (NiphPerf) unto their fathers: H1 and there stood H5975 (QalPerf) not a man H376 of all their enemies H341 (QalActPtc) before H6440 them; the Lord H3068 delivered H5414 (QalPerf) all their enemies H341 (QalActPtc) into their hand. και κατεπαυσεν αυτους κυριος κυκλοθεν καθοτι ωμοσεν τοις πατρασιν αυτων ουκ ανεστη ουθεις κατενωπιον αυτων απο παντων των εχθρων αυτων παντας τους εχθρους αυτων παρεδωκεν κυριος εις τας χειρας αυτων

With him were ten princes, one prince of a fathers’ house for each of the tribes of Israel; and they were each head of their fathers’ houses among the thousands of Israel.

“Therefore we said, ‘It shall be, when they tell us or our generations this in time to come, that we shall say, “Behold the pattern of Yahweh’s altar, which our fathers made, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you.” ’

Joshua said to all the people, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Your fathers lived of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor. They served other gods.

“Now therefore fear Yahweh, and serve him in sincerity and in truth. Put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, in Egypt; and serve Yahweh.

και νυν φοβηθητε κυριον και λατρευσατε αυτω εν ευθυτητι και εν δικαιοσυνη και περιελεσθε τους θεους τους αλλοτριους οις ελατρευσαν οι πατερες υμων εν τω περαν του ποταμου και εν αιγυπτω και λατρευετε κυριω

If it seems evil to you to serve Yahweh, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve Yahweh.”

And if it seem evil H7489 (QalPerf) unto you H4310 to serve H5647 (QalInf) the Lord, H3068 choose H977 (QalImpv) you this day H3117 whom H5869 ye will serve; H5647 (QalImpf) whether the gods H430 which your fathers H1 served H5647 (QalPerf) that [were] on the other side H5676 of the flood, H5104 or the gods H430 of the Amorites, H567 in whose land H776 ye dwell: H3427 (QalActPtc) but as for me and my house, H1004 we will serve H5647 (QalImpf) the Lord. for it is Yahweh our God who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way in which we went, and among all the peoples through the middle of whom we passed.

After all that generation were gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who didn’t know Yahweh, nor the work which he had done for Israel.

και πασα η γενεα εκεινη προσετεθησαν προς τους πατερας αυτων και ανεστη γενεα ετερα μετ αυτους οσοι ουκ εγνωσαν τον κυριον και το εργον ο εποιησεν τω ισραηλ

They abandoned Yahweh, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; and they provoked Yahweh to anger.

και εγκατελιπον τον κυριον θεον των πατερων αυτων τον εξαγαγοντα αυτους εκ γης αιγυπτου και επορευθησαν οπισω θεων ετερων απο των θεων των λαων των περικυκλω αυτων και προσεκυνησαν αυτοις και παρωργισαν τον κυριον

Yet they didn’t listen to their judges; for they prostituted themselves to other gods, and bowed themselves down to them. They quickly turned away from the way in which their fathers walked, obeying Yahweh’s commandments. They didn’t do so.

και γε των κριτων αυτων ουκ επηκουσαν οτι εξεπορνευσαν οπισω θεων ετερων και προσεκυνησαν αυτοις και παρωργισαν τον κυριον και εξεκλιναν ταχυ εκ της οδου ης επορευθησαν οι πατερες αυτων του εισακουειν εντολας κυριου ουκ εποιησαν ουτως

But when the judge was dead, they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers in following other gods to serve them and to bow down to them. They didn’t cease what they were doing, or give up their stubborn ways.

και εγενετο ως απεθνησκεν ο κριτης και απεστρεψαν και παλιν διεφθειραν υπερ τους πατερας αυτων πορευθηναι οπισω θεων ετερων λατρευειν αυτοις και προσκυνειν αυτοις ουκ απερριψαν τα επιτηδευματα αυτων και ουκ απεστησαν απο της οδου αυτων της σκληρας

Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel; and he said, “Because this nation transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to my voice,

και ωργισθη θυμω κυριος εν τω ισραηλ και ειπεν ανθ ων οσα εγκατελιπαν το εθνος τουτο την διαθηκην μου ην ενετειλαμην τοις πατρασιν αυτων και ουχ υπηκουσαν της φωνης μου

that by them I may test Israel, to see if they will keep Yahweh’s way to walk therein, as their fathers kept it, or not.”

They were left to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to Yahweh’s commandments, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.

και εγενηθη τη νυκτι εκεινη και ειπεν αυτω κυριος λαβε τον μοσχον τον σιτευτον του πατρος σου μοσχον τον επταετη και καθελεις το θυσιαστηριον του βααλ ο εστιν του πατρος σου και το αλσος το επ αυτω εκκοψεις

Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Yahweh had spoken to him. Because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city, he could not do it by day, but he did it by night.

Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s brothers, and spoke with them and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,

He went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy persons, on one stone; but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.

(for my father fought for you, risked his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian;

Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Isn’t he the son of Jerubbaal? Isn’t Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem, but why should we serve him?

και ειπεν γααλ υιος αβεδ τι εστιν αβιμελεχ και τις εστιν ο υιος συχεμ οτι δουλευσομεν αυτω ουχ ουτος υιος ιεροβααλ και ζεβουλ επισκοπος αυτου δουλος αυτου συν τοις ανδρασιν εμμωρ πατρος συχεμ και τι οτι δουλευσομεν αυτω ημεις

Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did to his father in killing his seventy brothers;
