“The kings came and fought, then the kings of Canaan fought at Taanach by the waters of Megiddo. They took no plunder of silver.

Zebah and Zalmunna fled and he pursued them. He took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and confused all the army.

Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men were they whom you killed at Tabor?” They answered, “They were like you. They all resembled the children of a king.”

Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, “What do you have to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?”

then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab, but he refused; so Israel stayed in Kadesh.

Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to my place.’

και νυν μη κρεισσων ει συ του βαλακ υιου σεπφωρ βασιλεως μωαβ μη μαχη εμαχεσατο μετα ισραηλ η πολεμων επολεμησεν αυτοις

However, the king of the children of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

Howbeit the king H4428 of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 hearkened H8085 (QalPerf) not unto the words H1697 of Jephthah H3316 which he sent H7971 (QalPerf) him.

και ουκ εισηκουσεν βασιλευς υιων αμμων και ουκ εισηκουσεν των λογων ιεφθαε ων απεστειλεν προς αυτον

In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did that which was right in his own eyes.

Those who strive with Yahweh shall be broken to pieces. He will thunder against them in the sky. “Yahweh will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.”

They said to him, “Behold, you are old, and your sons don’t walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

And said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Behold, thou art old, H2204 (QalPerf) and thy sons H1121 walk H1980 (QalPerf) not in thy ways: H1870 now make H7760 (QalImpv) us a king H4428 to judge H8199 (QalInf) us like all the nations. H1471

But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” Samuel prayed to Yahweh.

και ην πονηρον το ρημα εν οφθαλμοις σαμουηλ ως ειπαν δος ημιν βασιλεα δικαζειν ημας και προσηυξατο σαμουηλ προς κυριον

Now therefore, listen to their voice. However, you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the way of the king who will reign over them.”

Now therefore hearken H8085 (QalImpv) unto their voice: H6963 howbeit H389 yet protest H5749 (HiphImpf) solemnly H5749 (HiphInf) unto them, and shew H5046 (HiphPerf) them the manner H4941 of the king H4428 that shall reign H4427 (QalImpf) over them.

και νυν ακουε της φωνης αυτων πλην οτι διαμαρτυρομενος διαμαρτυρη αυτοις και απαγγελεις αυτοις το δικαιωμα του βασιλεως ος βασιλευσει επ αυτους

Samuel told all Yahweh’s words to the people who asked him for a king.

And Samuel H8050 told H559 (QalImpf) all the words H1697 of the Lord H3068 unto the people H5971 that asked H7592 (QalActPtc) of him a king. H4428

και ειπεν σαμουηλ παν το ρημα κυριου προς τον λαον τους αιτουντας παρ αυτου βασιλεα

He said, “This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them as his servants, for his chariots and to be his horsemen; and they will run before his chariots.

And he said, H559 (QalImpf) This will be the manner H4941 of the king H4428 that shall reign H4427 (QalImpf) over you: He will take H3947 (QalImpf) your sons, H1121 and appoint H7760 (QalPerf) [them] for himself, for his chariots, H4818 and [to be] his horsemen; H6571 and [some] shall run H7323 (QalPerf) before H6440 his chariots. H4818

και ειπεν τουτο εσται το δικαιωμα του βασιλεως ος βασιλευσει εφ υμας τους υιους υμων λημψεται και θησεται αυτους εν αρμασιν αυτου και ιππευσιν αυτου και προτρεχοντας των αρματων αυτου

You will cry out in that day because of your king whom you will have chosen for yourselves; and Yahweh will not answer you in that day.”

And ye shall cry out H2199 (QalPerf) in that day H3117 because H6440 of your king H4428 which ye shall have chosen H977 (QalPerf) you; and the Lord H3068 will not hear H6030 (QalImpf) you in that day. H3117

και βοησεσθε εν τη ημερα εκεινη εκ προσωπου βασιλεως υμων ου εξελεξασθε εαυτοις και ουκ επακουσεται κυριος υμων εν ταις ημεραις εκειναις οτι υμεις εξελεξασθε εαυτοις βασιλεα

But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,

Nevertheless the people H5971 refused H3985 (PielImpf) to obey H8085 (QalInf) the voice H6963 of Samuel; H8050 and they said, H559 (QalImpf) Nay; but we will have a king H4428 over us;

και ουκ ηβουλετο ο λαος ακουσαι του σαμουηλ και ειπαν αυτω ουχι αλλ η βασιλευς εσται εφ ημας

that we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.”

That we also may be like all the nations; H1471 and that our king H4428 may judge H8199 (QalPerf) us, and go out H3318 (QalPerf) before H6440 us, and fight H3898 (NiphPerf) our battles. H4421

και εσομεθα και ημεις κατα παντα τα εθνη και δικασει ημας βασιλευς ημων και εξελευσεται εμπροσθεν ημων και πολεμησει τον πολεμον ημων

Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to their voice, and make them a king.” Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Everyone go to your own city.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) to Samuel, H8050 Hearken H8085 (QalImpv) unto their voice, H6963 and make H4427 (HiphPerf) them a king. H4428 And Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the men H582 of Israel, H3478 Go H3212 (QalImpv) ye every man H376 unto his city. H5892

και ειπεν κυριος προς σαμουηλ ακουε της φωνης αυτων και βασιλευσον αυτοις βασιλεα και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς ανδρας ισραηλ αποτρεχετω εκαστος εις την πολιν αυτου

But you have today rejected your God, who himself saves you out of all your calamities and your distresses; and you have said to him, ‘No! Set a king over us!’ Now therefore present yourselves before Yahweh by your tribes and by your thousands.”

And ye have this day H3117 rejected H3988 (QalPerf) your God, H430 who himself saved H3467 (HiphPtc) you out of all your adversities H7451 and your tribulations; H6869 and ye have said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, [Nay], but set H7760 (QalImpf) a king H4428 over us. Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom Yahweh has chosen, that there is no one like him among all the people?” All the people shouted and said, “Long live the king!”

Samuel said to all Israel, “Behold, I have listened to your voice in all that you said to me, and have made a king over you.

Now, behold, the king walks before you. I am old and gray-headed. Behold, my sons are with you. I have walked before you from my youth to this day.

But they forgot Yahweh their God; and he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the army of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab; and they fought against them.

“When you saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when Yahweh your God was your king.

And when ye saw H7200 (QalImpf) that Nahash H5176 the king H4428 of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 came H935 (QalPerf) against you, ye said H559 (QalImpf) unto me, Nay; but a king H4428 shall reign H4427 (QalImpf) over us: when the Lord H3068 your God H430 [was] your king. H4428

και ειδετε οτι ναας βασιλευς υιων αμμων ηλθεν εφ υμας και ειπατε ουχι αλλ η οτι βασιλευς βασιλευσει εφ ημων και κυριος ο θεος ημων βασιλευς ημων

Now therefore see the king whom you have chosen and whom you have asked for. Behold, Yahweh has set a king over you.

If you will fear Yahweh, and serve him, and listen to his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of Yahweh, then both you and also the king who reigns over you are followers of Yahweh your God.

If ye will fear H3372 (QalImpf) the Lord, H3068 and serve H5647 (QalPerf) him, and obey H8085 (QalPerf) his voice, H6963 and not rebel H4784 (HiphImpf) against the commandment H6310 of the Lord, H3068 then shall both ye and also the king H4428 that reigneth H4427 (QalPerf) over you continue following H310 the Lord H3068 your God: H430

εαν φοβηθητε τον κυριον και δουλευσητε αυτω και ακουσητε της φωνης αυτου και μη ερισητε τω στοματι κυριου και ητε και υμεις και ο βασιλευς ο βασιλευων εφ υμων οπισω κυριου πορευομενοι

Isn’t it wheat harvest today? I will call to Yahweh, that he may send thunder and rain; and you will know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in Yahweh’s sight, in asking for a king.”

[Is it] not wheat H2406 harvest H7105 to day? H3117 I will call H7121 (QalImpf) unto the Lord, H3068 and he shall send H5414 (QalImpf) thunder H6963 and rain; H4306 that ye may perceive H3045 (QalImpv) and see H7200 (QalImpv) that your wickedness H7451 [is] great, H7227 which ye have done H6213 (QalPerf) in the sight H5869 of the Lord, H3068 in asking H7592 (QalInf) you a king. H4428

ουχι θερισμος πυρων σημερον επικαλεσομαι κυριον και δωσει φωνας και υετον και γνωτε και ιδετε οτι η κακια υμων μεγαλη ην εποιησατε ενωπιον κυριου αιτησαντες εαυτοις βασιλεα

All the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to Yahweh your God, that we not die; for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for a king.”

And all the people H5971 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Pray H6419 (HithImpv) for thy servants H5650 unto the Lord H3068 thy God, H430 that we die H4191 (QalImpf) not: for we have added H3254 (QalPerf) unto all our sins H2403 [this] evil, H7451 to ask H7592 (QalInf) us a king. H4428

και ειπαν πας ο λαος προς σαμουηλ προσευξαι υπερ των δουλων σου προς κυριον θεον σου και ου μη αποθανωμεν οτι προστεθεικαμεν προς πασας τας αμαρτιας ημων κακιαν αιτησαντες εαυτοις βασιλεα

But if you keep doing evil, you will be consumed, both you and your king.”

But if ye shall still H7489 (HiphInf) do wickedly, H7489 (HiphImpf) ye shall be consumed, H5595 (NiphImpf) both ye and your king. H4428

και εαν κακια κακοποιησητε και υμεις και ο βασιλευς υμων προστεθησεσθε

Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side: against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned himself, he defeated them.

So Saul H7586 took H3920 (QalPerf) the kingdom H4410 over Israel, H3478 and fought H3898 (NiphImpf) against all his enemies H341 (QalActPtc) on every side, H5439 against Moab, H4124 and against the children H1121 of Ammon, H5983 and against Edom, H123 and against the kings H4428 of Zobah, H6678 and against the Philistines: H6430 and whithersoever he turned H6437 (QalImpf) himself, he vexed H7561 (HiphImpf) [them].

και σαουλ κατακληρουται εργον επι ισραηλ και επολεμει κυκλω παντας τους εχθρους αυτου εις τον μωαβ και εις τους υιους αμμων και εις τους υιους εδωμ και εις τον βαιθεωρ και εις βασιλεα σουβα και εις τους αλλοφυλους ου αν εστραφη εσωζετο

Samuel said to Saul, “Yahweh sent me to anoint you to be king over his people, over Israel. Now therefore listen to the voice of Yahweh’s words.

Samuel H8050 also said H559 (QalImpf) unto Saul, H7586 The Lord H3068 sent H7971 (QalPerf) me to anoint H4886 (QalInf) thee [to be] king H4428 over his people, H5971 over Israel: H3478 now therefore hearken H8085 (QalImpv) thou unto the voice H6963 of the words H1697 of the Lord. H3068

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς σαουλ εμε απεστειλεν κυριος χρισαι σε εις βασιλεα επι ισραηλ και νυν ακουε της φωνης κυριου

He took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

And he took H8610 (QalImpf) Agag H90 the king H4428 of the Amalekites H6002 alive, H2416 and utterly destroyed H2763 (HiphPerf) all the people H5971 with the edge H6310 of the sword. H2719

και συνελαβεν τον αγαγ βασιλεα αμαληκ ζωντα και παντα τον λαον ιεριμ απεκτεινεν εν στοματι ρομφαιας

“It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king, for he has turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments.” Samuel was angry; and he cried to Yahweh all night.

It repenteth H5162 (NiphPerf) me that I have set up H4427 (HiphPerf) Saul H7586 [to be] king: H4428 for he is turned back H7725 (QalPerf) from following H310 me, and hath not performed H6965 (HiphPerf) my commandments. παρακεκλημαι οτι εβασιλευσα τον σαουλ εις βασιλεα οτι απεστρεψεν απο οπισθεν μου και τους λογους μου ουκ ετηρησεν και ηθυμησεν σαμουηλ και εβοησεν προς κυριον ολην την νυκτα

Samuel said, “Though you were little in your own sight, weren’t you made the head of the tribes of Israel? Yahweh anointed you king over Israel;

And Samuel H8050 said, H559 (QalImpf) When thou [wast] little H6996 in thine own sight, H5869 [wast] thou not [made] the head H7218 of the tribes H7626 of Israel, H3478 and the Lord H3068 anointed H4886 (QalImpf) thee king H4428 over Israel? H3478

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς σαουλ ουχι μικρος συ ει ενωπιον αυτου ηγουμενος σκηπτρου φυλης ισραηλ και εχρισεν σε κυριος εις βασιλεα επι ισραηλ

Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed Yahweh’s voice, and have gone the way which Yahweh sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

And Saul H7586 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Yea, I have obeyed H8085 (QalPerf) the voice H6963 of the Lord, H3068 and have gone H3212 (QalImpf) the way H1870 which the Lord H3068 sent H7971 (QalPerf) me, and have brought H935 (HiphImpf) Agag H90 the king H4428 of Amalek, H6002 and have utterly destroyed H2763 (HiphPerf) the Amalekites. H6002

και ειπεν σαουλ προς σαμουηλ δια το ακουσαι με της φωνης του λαου και επορευθην εν τη οδω η απεστειλεν με κυριος και ηγαγον τον αγαγ βασιλεα αμαληκ και τον αμαληκ εξωλεθρευσα

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim.° Because you have rejected Yahweh’s word, he has also rejected you from being king.”

1 Samuel 15:23 teraphim were household idols that may have been associated with inheritance rights to the household property.

For rebellion H4805 [is as] the sin H2403 of witchcraft, H7081 and stubbornness H6484 (HiphInf) [is as] iniquity H205 and idolatry. H8655 Because thou hast rejected H3988 (QalPerf) the word H1697 of the Lord, H3068 he hath also rejected H3988 (QalImpf) thee from [being] king. H4428

οτι αμαρτια οιωνισμα εστιν οδυνην και πονους θεραφιν επαγουσιν οτι εξουδενωσας το ρημα κυριου και εξουδενωσει σε κυριος μη ειναι βασιλεα επι ισραηλ

Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected Yahweh’s word, and Yahweh has rejected you from being king over Israel.”

And Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Saul, H7586 I will not return H7725 (QalImpf) with thee: for thou hast rejected H3988 (QalPerf) the word H1697 of the Lord, H3068 and the Lord H3068 hath rejected H3988 (QalImpf) thee from being king H4428 over Israel. H3478

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς σαουλ ουκ αναστρεφω μετα σου οτι εξουδενωσας το ρημα κυριου και εξουδενωσει σε κυριος του μη ειναι βασιλεα επι τον ισραηλ

Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag the king of the Amalekites here to me!” Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”

Then said H559 (QalImpf) Samuel, H8050 Bring ye hither H5066 (HiphImpv) to me Agag H90 the king H4428 of the Amalekites. H6002 And Agag H90 came H3212 (QalImpf) unto him delicately. H4574 And Agag H90 said, H559 (QalImpf) Surely H403 the bitterness H4751 of death H4194 is past. H5493 (QalPerf)

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προσαγαγετε μοι τον αγαγ βασιλεα αμαληκ και προσηλθεν προς αυτον αγαγ τρεμων και ειπεν αγαγ ει ουτως πικρος ο θανατος

Yahweh said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided a king for myself among his sons.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 How long wilt thou mourn H56 (HithPtc) for Saul, H7586 seeing I have rejected H3988 (QalPerf) him from reigning H4427 (QalInf) over Israel? H3478 fill H4390 (PielImpv) thine horn H7161 with oil, H8081 and go, H3212 (QalImpv) I will send H7971 (QalImpf) thee to Jesse H3448 the Bethlehemite: H1022 for I have provided H7200 (QalPerf) me a king H4428 among his sons. H1121

και ειπεν κυριος προς σαμουηλ εως ποτε συ πενθεις επι σαουλ καγω εξουδενωκα αυτον μη βασιλευειν επι ισραηλ πλησον το κερας σου ελαιου και δευρο αποστειλω σε προς ιεσσαι εως εις βηθλεεμ οτι εορακα εν τοις υιοις αυτου εμοι βασιλευειν
