Now when all the captains of the forces, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Kareah, Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

Gedaliah swore to them and to their men, and said to them, “Don’t be afraid because of the servants of the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.”

And Gedaliah H1436 sware H7650 (NiphImpf) to them, and to their men, H582 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, Fear H3372 (QalImpf) not to be the servants H5650 of the Chaldees: H3778 dwell H3427 (QalImpv) in the land, H776 and serve H5647 (QalImpv) the king H4428 of Babylon; H894 and it shall be well H3190 (QalImpf) with you.

και ωμοσεν γοδολιας αυτοις και τοις ανδρασιν αυτων και ειπεν αυτοις μη φοβεισθε παροδον των χαλδαιων καθισατε εν τη γη και δουλευσατε τω βασιλει βαβυλωνος και καλως εσται υμιν

But in the seventh month, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the royal offspring came, and ten men with him, and struck Gedaliah so that he died, with the Jews and the Chaldeans that were with him at Mizpah.

Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and lived with him among the people who were left in the land.

Now when all the captains of the forces who were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed to him men, women, children, and of the poorest of the land, of those who were not carried away captive to Babylon,

Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore to them and to their men, saying, “Don’t be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.

Jeremiah 40:9 Heb. to stand before. And so verse 10

^[47:9] και ωμοσεν αυτοις γοδολιας και τοις ανδρασιν αυτων λεγων μη φοβηθητε απο προσωπου των παιδων των χαλδαιων κατοικησατε εν τη γη και εργασασθε τω βασιλει βαβυλωνος και βελτιον εσται υμιν

Likewise when all the Jews who were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and who were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,

then all the Jews returned out of all places where they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, to Mizpah, and gathered very much wine and summer fruits.

Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah,

^[47:13] και ιωαναν υιος καρηε και παντες οι ηγεμονες της δυναμεως οι εν τοις αγροις ηλθον προς γοδολιαν εις μασσηφα

and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of the children of Ammon has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam didn’t believe them.

and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Dost thou certainly H3045 (QalInf) know H3045 (QalImpf) that Baalis H1185 the king H4428 of the Ammonites H1121 H5983 hath sent H7971 (QalPerf) Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 to slay H5221 (HiphInf) H5315 thee?^§ But Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 believed H539 (HiphPerf) them not.

Jeremiah 40:14 Heb. to strike thee in soul?

^[47:14] και ειπαν αυτω ει γνωσει γινωσκεις οτι βελισα βασιλευς υιων αμμων απεστειλεν προς σε τον ισμαηλ παταξαι σου ψυχην και ουκ επιστευσεν αυτοις γοδολιας

Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, “Please let me go, and I will kill Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man will know it. Why should he take your life, that all the Jews who are gathered to you should be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish?”

Then Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 spake H559 (QalPerf) to Gedaliah H1436 in Mizpah H4709 secretly, H5643 saying, H559 (QalInf) Let me go, H3212 (QalImpf) I pray thee, and I will slay H5221 (HiphImpf) Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah, H5418 and no man H376 shall know H3045 (QalImpf) it: wherefore should he slay H5221 (HiphImpf) H5315 thee, that all the Jews H3064 which are gathered H6908 (NiphPtc) unto thee should be scattered, H6327 (NiphPerf) and the remnant H7611 in Judah H3063 perish? ^[47:15] και ιωαναν ειπεν τω γοδολια κρυφαιως εν μασσηφα πορευσομαι δη και παταξω τον ισμαηλ και μηθεις γνωτω μη παταξη σου ψυχην και διασπαρη πας ιουδα οι συνηγμενοι προς σε και απολουνται οι καταλοιποι ιουδα

But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing, for you speak falsely of Ishmael.”

But Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah, H7143 Thou shalt not do H6213 (QalImpf) this thing: H1697 for thou speakest H1696 (QalActPtc) falsely H8267 of Ishmael. H3458

^[47:16] και ειπεν γοδολιας προς ιωαναν μη ποιησης το πραγμα τουτο οτι ψευδη συ λεγεις περι ισμαηλ

Now in the seventh month, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the royal offspring and one of the chief officers of the king, and ten men with him, came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and there they ate bread together in Mizpah.

Now it came to pass in the seventh H7637 month, H2320 that Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 the son H1121 of Elishama, H476 of the seed H2233 royal, H4410 and the princes H7227 of the king, H4428 even ten H6235 men H582 with him, came H935 (QalPerf) unto Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 to Mizpah; H4709 and there they did eat H398 (QalImpf) bread H3899 together H3162 in Mizpah. ^[48:1] και εγενετο τω μηνι τω εβδομω ηλθεν ισμαηλ υιος ναθανιου υιου ελασα απο γενους του βασιλεως και δεκα ανδρες μετ αυτου προς γοδολιαν εις μασσηφα και εφαγον εκει αρτον αμα

Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah arose, and the ten men who were with him, and struck Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan with the sword and killed him, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.

Then arose H6965 (QalImpf) Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah, H5418 and the ten H6235 men H582 that were with him, and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 the son H1121 of Shaphan H8227 with the sword, H2719 and slew H4191 (HiphImpf) him, whom the king H4428 of Babylon H894 had made governor H6485 (HiphPerf) over the land. ^[48:2] και ανεστη ισμαηλ και οι δεκα ανδρες οι ησαν μετ αυτου και επαταξαν τον γοδολιαν ον κατεστησεν βασιλευς βαβυλωνος επι της γης

Ishmael also killed all the Jews who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, and the Chaldean men of war who were found there.

Ishmael H3458 also slew H5221 (HiphPerf) all the Jews H3064 that were with him, even with Gedaliah, H1436 at Mizpah, H4709 and the Chaldeans H3778 that were found H4672 (NiphPerf) there, and the men H582 of war. H4421

The second day after he had killed Gedaliah, and no man knew it,

And it came to pass the second H8145 day H3117 after he had slain H4191 (HiphInf) Gedaliah, H1436 and no man H376 knew H3045 (QalPerf) it,

Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went, and as he met them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.”

And Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 went forth H3318 (QalImpf) from Mizpah H4709 to meet H7125 (QalInf) them, weeping H1058 (QalActPtc) all along H1980 (QalInf) as he went:^§ H1980 (QalActPtc) and it came to pass, as he met H6298 (QalInf) them, he said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, Come H935 (QalImpv) to Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam. Jeremiah 41:6 Heb. in going and weeping

^[48:6] και εξηλθεν εις απαντησιν αυτοις ισμαηλ αυτοι επορευοντο και εκλαιον και ειπεν αυτοις εισελθετε προς γοδολιαν

Now the pit in which Ishmael cast all the dead bodies of the men whom he had killed, by the side of Gedaliah (this was that which Asa the king had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel), Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with those who were killed.

Now the pit H953 wherein Ishmael H3458 had cast H7993 (HiphPerf) all the dead bodies H6297 of the men, H582 whom he had slain H5221 (HiphPerf) because H3027 of Gedaliah,^§ H1436 was it which Asa H609 the king H4428 had made H6213 (QalPerf) for fear H6440 of Baasha H1201 king H4428 of Israel: H3478 and Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 filled H4390 (PielPerf) it with them that were slain. Then Ishmael carried away captive all of the people who were left in Mizpah, even the king’s daughters, and all the people who remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive, and departed to go over to the children of Ammon.

Then Ishmael H3458 carried away captive H7617 (QalImpf) all the residue H7611 of the people H5971 that were in Mizpah, H4709 even the king’s H4428 daughters, H1323 and all the people H5971 that remained H7604 (NiphPtc) in Mizpah, H4709 whom Nebuzar-adan H5018 the captain H7227 of the guard H2876 had committed H6485 (HiphPerf) to Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam: H296 and Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 carried them away captive, H7617 (QalImpf) and departed H3212 (QalImpf) to go over H5674 (QalInf) to the Ammonites. ^[48:10] και απεστρεψεν ισμαηλ παντα τον λαον τον καταλειφθεντα εις μασσηφα και τας θυγατερας του βασιλεως ας παρεκατεθετο ο αρχιμαγειρος τω γοδολια υιω αχικαμ και ωχετο εις το περαν υιων αμμων

Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces who were with him took all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after he had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam—the men of war, with the women, the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gibeon.
