“The cities which you shall give to the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the man slayer to flee to. Besides them you shall give forty-two cities.

then you shall appoint for yourselves cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the man slayer who kills any person unwittingly may flee there.

The cities shall be for your refuge from the avenger, that the man slayer not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.

“ ‘But if he struck him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death.

And if he smite H5221 (HiphPerf) him with an instrument H3627 of iron, H1270 so that he die, H4191 (QalImpf) he is a murderer: H7523 (QalActPtc) the murderer H7523 (QalActPtc) shall surely H4191 (QalInf) be put to death. H4191 (HophImpf)

εαν δε εν σκευει σιδηρου παταξη αυτον και τελευτηση φονευτης εστιν θανατω θανατουσθω ο φονευτης

If he struck him with a stone in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death.

And if he smite H5221 (HiphPerf) him with throwing H3027 a stone,^§ H68 wherewith he may die, H4191 (QalImpf) and he die, H4191 (QalImpf) he is a murderer: H7523 (QalActPtc) the murderer H7523 (QalActPtc) shall surely H4191 (QalInf) be put to death. H4191 (HophImpf)

Numbers 35:17 Heb. with a stone of the hand

εαν δε εν λιθω εκ χειρος εν ω αποθανειται εν αυτω παταξη αυτον και αποθανη φονευτης εστιν θανατω θανατουσθω ο φονευτης

Or if he struck him with a weapon of wood in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death.

Or if he smite H5221 (HiphPerf) him with an hand H3027 weapon H3627 of wood, H6086 wherewith he may die, H4191 (QalImpf) and he die, H4191 (QalImpf) he is a murderer: H7523 (QalActPtc) the murderer H7523 (QalActPtc) shall surely H4191 (QalInf) be put to death. H4191 (HophImpf)

The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death. When he meets him, he shall put him to death.

The revenger H1350 (QalActPtc) of blood H1818 himself shall slay H4191 (HiphImpf) the murderer: H7523 (QalActPtc) when he meeteth H6293 (QalInf) him, he H1931 shall slay H4191 (HiphImpf) him.

ο αγχιστευων το αιμα ουτος αποκτενει τον φονευσαντα οταν συναντηση αυτω ουτος αποκτενει αυτον

or in hostility struck him with his hand, so that he died, he who struck him shall surely be put to death. He is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

η δια μηνιν επαταξεν αυτον τη χειρι και αποθανη θανατω θανατουσθω ο παταξας φονευτης εστιν θανατω θανατουσθω ο φονευων ο αγχιστευων το αιμα αποκτενει τον φονευσαντα εν τω συναντησαι αυτω

The congregation shall deliver the man slayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, where he had fled. He shall dwell therein until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.

and the congregation H5712 shall deliver H5337 (HiphPerf) the slayer H7523 (QalActPtc) out of the hand H3027 of the revenger H1350 (QalActPtc) of blood, H1818 and the congregation H5712 shall restore H7725 (HiphPerf) him to the city H5892 of his refuge, H4733 whither he was fled: H5127 (QalPerf) and he shall abide H3427 (QalPerf) in it unto the death H4194 of the high H1419 priest, H3548 which was anointed H4886 (QalPerf) with the holy H6944 oil. και εξελειται η συναγωγη τον φονευσαντα απο του αγχιστευοντος το αιμα και αποκαταστησουσιν αυτον η συναγωγη εις την πολιν του φυγαδευτηριου αυτου ου κατεφυγεν και κατοικησει εκει εως αν αποθανη ο ιερευς ο μεγας ον εχρισαν αυτον τω ελαιω τω αγιω

“ ‘But if the man slayer shall at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge where he flees,

But if the slayer H7523 (QalActPtc) shall at any time H3318 (QalInf) come H3318 (QalImpf) without the border H1366 of the city H5892 of his refuge, H4733 whither he was fled; H5127 (QalImpf)

εαν δε εξοδω εξελθη ο φονευσας τα ορια της πολεως εις ην κατεφυγεν εκει

and the avenger of blood finds him outside of the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the man slayer, he shall not be guilty of blood,

and the revenger H1350 (QalActPtc) of blood H1818 find H4672 (QalPerf) him without H2351 the borders H1366 of the city H5892 of his refuge, H4733 and the revenger H1350 (QalActPtc) of blood H1818 kill H7523 (QalPerf) the slayer; H7523 (QalActPtc) he shall not be guilty of blood:^§ H1818

Numbers 35:27 Heb. no blood shall be to him

και ευρη αυτον ο αγχιστευων το αιμα εξω των οριων της πολεως καταφυγης αυτου και φονευση ο αγχιστευων το αιμα τον φονευσαντα ουκ ενοχος εστιν

because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest, the man slayer shall return into the land of his possession.

εν γαρ τη πολει της καταφυγης κατοικειτω εως αν αποθανη ο ιερευς ο μεγας και μετα το αποθανειν τον ιερεα τον μεγαν επαναστραφησεται ο φονευσας εις την γην της κατασχεσεως αυτου

“ ‘Whoever kills any person, the murderer shall be slain based on the testimony of witnesses; but one witness shall not testify alone against any person so that he dies.

“ ‘Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death. He shall surely be put to death.

Numbers 35:31 Heb. faulty to die

και ου λημψεσθε λυτρα περι ψυχης παρα του φονευσαντος του ενοχου οντος αναιρεθηναι θανατω γαρ θανατωθησεται

that the man slayer might flee there, who kills his neighbor unintentionally and didn’t hate him in time past, and that fleeing to one of these cities he might live:

that the slayer H7523 (QalActPtc) might flee H5127 (QalInf) thither, which should kill H7523 (QalImpf) his neighbour H7453 unawares, H1097 H1847 and hated H8130 (QalActPtc) him not in times H8543 past; H8032 and that fleeing H5127 (QalPerf) unto one H259 of these H411 cities H5892 he might live: H2425 (QalPerf)

“You shall not murder.

You shall prepare the way, and divide the borders of your land which Yahweh your God causes you to inherit into three parts, that every man slayer may flee there.

στοχασαι σοι την οδον και τριμεριεις τα ορια της γης σου ην καταμεριζει σοι κυριος ο θεος σου και εσται καταφυγη εκει παντι φονευτη

This is the case of the man slayer who shall flee there and live: Whoever kills his neighbor unintentionally, and didn’t hate him in time past—

Deuteronomy 19:4 Heb. from yesterday the third day

τουτο δε εσται το προσταγμα του φονευτου ος αν φυγη εκει και ζησεται ος αν παταξη τον πλησιον αυτου ακουσιως και ουτος ου μισων αυτον προ της εχθες και προ της τριτης

Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue the man slayer while hot anger is in his heart and overtake him, because the way is long, and strike him mortally, even though he was not worthy of death, because he didn’t hate him in time past.

ινα μη διωξας ο αγχιστευων του αιματος οπισω του φονευσαντος οτι παρατεθερμανται τη καρδια και καταλαβη αυτον εαν μακροτερα η η οδος και παταξη αυτου την ψυχην και αποθανη και τουτω ουκ εστιν κρισις θανατου οτι ου μισων ην αυτον προ της εχθες και προ της τριτης

but to the lady you shall do nothing. There is in the lady no sin worthy of death; for as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter;

If the avenger of blood pursues him, then they shall not deliver up the man slayer into his hand; because he struck his neighbor unintentionally, and didn’t hate him before.

He shall dwell in that city until he stands before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days. Then the man slayer shall return, and come to his own city, and to his own house, to the city he fled from.’ ”

The murderer rises with the light. He kills the poor and needy. In the night he is like a thief.

How long will you assault a man? Would all of you throw him down, like a leaning wall, like a tottering fence?

They kill the widow and the alien, and murder the fatherless.

How the faithful city has become a prostitute! She was full of justice. Righteousness lodged in her, but now there are murderers.

Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods that you have not known,
