Yahweh sent a prophet to the children of Israel; and he said to them, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage.

that Jehovah sendeth a man, a prophet, unto the sons of Israel, and he saith to them, ‘Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I-I have brought you up out of Egypt, and I bring you out from a house of servants,

Yahweh said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite H5221 (HiphPerf) the Midianites H4080 as one H259 man. H376

And Jehovah saith unto him, ‘Because I am with thee-thou hast smitten the Midianites as one man.’

Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Yahweh had spoken to him. Because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city, he could not do it by day, but he did it by night.

Then Gideon H1439 took H3947 (QalImpf) ten H6235 men H582 of his servants, H5650 and did H6213 (QalImpf) as the Lord H3068 had said H1696 (PielPerf) unto him: and [so] it was, because he feared H3372 (QalPerf) his father’s H1 household, H1004 and the men H582 of the city, H5892 that he could not do H6213 (QalInf) [it] by day, H3119 that he did H6213 (QalImpf) [it] by night. H3915

And Gideon taketh ten men of his servants, and doth as Jehovah hath spoken unto him, and it cometh to pass, because he hath been afraid of the house of his father, and the men of the city, to do it by day, that he doth it by night.

When the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bull was offered on the altar that was built.

And when the men H582 of the city H5892 arose early H7925 (HiphImpf) in the morning, H1242 behold, the altar H4196 of Baal H1168 was cast down, H5422 (PualPerf) and the grove H842 was cut down H3772 (PualPerf) that [was] by it, and the second H8145 bullock H6499 was offered H5927 (HophPerf) upon the altar H4196 [that was] built. H1129 (QalPasPtc)

And the men of the city rise early in the morning, and lo, broken down hath been the altar of Baal, and the shrine which is by it hath been cut down, and the second bullock hath been offered on the altar which is built.

They said to one another, “Who has done this thing?” When they inquired and asked, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.”

And they say one to another, ‘Who hath done this thing?’ and they inquire and seek, and they say, ‘Gideon son of Joash hath done this thing.’

Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it.”

Then the men H582 of the city H5892 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Joash, H3101 Bring out H3318 (HiphImpv) thy son, H1121 that he may die: H4191 (QalImpf) because he hath cast down H5422 (QalPerf) the altar H4196 of Baal, H1168 and because he hath cut down H3772 (QalPerf) the grove H842 that [was] by it.

And the men of the city say unto Joash, ‘Bring out thy son, and he dieth, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the shrine which is by it.’

The number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people bowed down on their knees to drink water.

And the number H4557 of them that lapped, H3952 (PielPtc) [putting] their hand H3027 to their mouth, H6310 were three H7969 hundred H3967 men: H376 but all the rest H3499 of the people H5971 bowed down H3766 (QalPerf) upon their knees H1290 to drink H8354 (QalInf) water. H4325

And the number of those lapping with their hand unto their mouth is three hundred men, and all the rest of the people have bowed down on their knees to drink water.

Yahweh said to Gideon, “I will save you by the three hundred men who lapped, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, each to his own place.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Gideon, H1439 By the three H7969 hundred H3967 men H376 that lapped H3952 (PielPtc) will I save H3467 (HiphImpf) you, and deliver H5414 (QalPerf) the Midianites H4080 into thine hand: H3027 and let all the [other] people H5971 go H3212 (QalImpf) every man H376 unto his place. H4725

And Jehovah saith unto Gideon, ‘By the three hundred men who are lapping I save you, and have given Midian into thy hand, and all the people go, each to his place.’

So the people took food in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the rest of the men of Israel to their own tents, but retained the three hundred men; and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

So the people H5971 took H3947 (QalImpf) victuals H6720 in their hand, H3027 and their trumpets: H7782 and he sent H7971 (PielPerf) all H376 [the rest of] Israel H3478 every man H376 unto his tent, H168 and retained H2388 (HiphPerf) those three H7969 hundred H3967 men: H376 and the host H4264 of Midian H4080 was beneath him in the valley. And the people take the provision in their hand, and their trumpets, and every man of Israel he hath sent away, each to his tents; and on the three hundred men he hath kept hold, and the camp of Midian hath been by him at the lower part of the valley.

When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his fellow. He said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream; and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.”

And when Gideon H1439 was come, H935 (QalImpf) behold, [there was] a man H376 that told H5608 (PielPtc) a dream H2472 unto his fellow, H7453 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Behold, I dreamed H2492 (QalPerf) a dream, H2472 and, lo, a cake H6742 (Qere) H6742 of barley H8184 bread H3899 tumbled H2015 (HithPtc) into the host H4264 of Midian, H4080 and came H935 (QalImpf) unto a tent, H168 and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) it that it fell, H5307 (QalImpf) and overturned H2015 (QalImpf) H4605 it, that the tent H168 lay along. And Gideon cometh in, and lo, a man is recounting to his companion a dream, and saith, ‘Lo, a dream I have dreamed, and lo, a cake of barley-bread is turning itself over into the camp of Midian, and it cometh in unto the tent, and smiteth it, and it falleth, and turneth it upwards, and the tent hath fallen.’

His fellow answered, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has delivered Midian into his hand, with all the army.”

And his fellow H7453 answered H6030 (QalImpf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) This [is] nothing else save the sword H2719 of Gideon H1439 the son H1121 of Joash, H3101 a man H376 of Israel: H3478 [for] into his hand H3027 hath God H430 delivered H5414 (QalPerf) Midian, H4080 and all the host. H4264

And his companion answereth and saith, ‘This is nothing save the sword of Gideon son of Joash, a man of Israel; God hath given into his hand Midian and all the camp.’

He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers.

And he divided H2673 (QalImpf) the three H7969 hundred H3967 men H376 [into] three H7969 companies, H7218 and he put H5414 (QalImpf) a trumpet H7782 in every man’s hand, H3027 with empty H7386 pitchers, H3537 and lamps H3940 within H8432 the pitchers. H3537

And he divideth the three hundred men into three detachments, and putteth trumpets into the hand of all of them, and empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.

So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch. Then they blew the trumpets and broke in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.

So Gideon, H1439 and the hundred H3967 men H376 that [were] with him, came H935 (QalImpf) unto the outside H7097 of the camp H4264 in the beginning H7218 of the middle H8484 watch; H821 and they had but H389 newly H6965 (HiphInf) set H6965 (HiphPerf) the watch: H8104 (QalActPtc) and they blew H8628 (QalImpf) the trumpets, H7782 and brake H5310 (QalInf) the pitchers H3537 that [were] in their hands. And Gideon cometh-and the hundred men who are with him-into the extremity of the camp, at the beginning of the middle watch (it hath only just confirmed the watchmen), and they blow with trumpets-dashing in pieces also the pitchers which are in their hand;

They each stood in his place around the camp, and all the army ran; and they shouted, and put them to flight.

And they stood H5975 (QalImpf) every man H376 in his place round about H5439 the camp: H4264 and all the host H4264 ran, H7323 (QalImpf) and cried, H7321 (HiphImpf) and fled. H5127 (QalImpf) (Qere) H5127 (HiphImpf)

And they stand each in his place, round about the camp, and all the camp runneth, and they shout, and flee;

They blew the three hundred trumpets, and Yahweh set every man’s sword against his fellow and against all the army; and the army fled as far as Beth Shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath.

And the three H7969 hundred H3967 blew H8628 (QalImpf) the trumpets, H7782 and the Lord H3068 set H7760 (QalImpf) every man’s H376 sword H2719 against his fellow, H7453 even throughout all the host: H4264 and the host H4264 fled H5127 (QalImpf) to Bethshittah H1029 in Zererath, H6888 [and] to the border H8193 of Abelmeholah, H65 unto Tabbath. H2888

and the three hundred blow the trumpets, and Jehovah setteth the sword of each against his companion, even through all the camp; and the camp fleeth unto Beth-Shittah, at Zererath, unto the border of Abel-Meholah, by Tabbath.

The men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued Midian.

And the men H376 of Israel H3478 gathered themselves together H6817 (NiphImpf) out of Naphtali, H5321 and out of Asher, H836 and out of all Manasseh, H4519 and pursued H7291 (QalImpf) after H310 the Midianites. H4080

And the men of Israel are called from Naphtali, and from Asher, and from all Manasseh, and pursue after Midian.

Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against Midian and take the waters before them as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan!” So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together and took the waters as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan.

And Gideon H1439 sent H7971 (QalPerf) messengers H4397 throughout all mount H2022 Ephraim, H669 saying, H559 (QalInf) Come down H3381 (QalImpv) against H7125 (QalInf) the Midianites, H4080 and take H3920 (QalImpv) before them the waters H4325 unto Bethbarah H1012 and Jordan. H3383 Then all the men H376 of Ephraim H669 gathered themselves together, H6817 (NiphImpf) and took H3920 (QalImpf) the waters H4325 unto Bethbarah H1012 and Jordan. H3383

And messengers hath sent Gideon into all the hill-country of Ephraim, saying, ‘Come down to meet Midian, and capture before them the waters unto Beth-Barah, and the Jordan;’ and every man of Ephraim is called, and they capture the waters unto Beth-Barah, and the Jordan,

The men of Ephraim said to him, “Why have you treated us this way, that you didn’t call us when you went to fight with Midian?” They rebuked him sharply.

And the men H376 of Ephraim H669 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Why hast thou H4100 served H6213 (QalPerf) us thus, H1697 that thou calledst H7121 (QalInf) us not, when thou wentest H1980 (QalPerf) to fight H3898 (NiphInf) with the Midianites? H4080 And they did chide H7378 (QalImpf) with him sharply. H2394

And the men of Ephraim say unto him, ‘What is this thing thou hast done to us-not to call for us when thou didst go to fight with Midian?’ and they strive with him severely;

Gideon came to the Jordan and passed over, he and the three hundred men who were with him, faint, yet pursuing.

And Gideon H1439 came H935 (QalImpf) to Jordan, H3383 [and] passed over, H5674 (QalActPtc) he, and the three H7969 hundred H3967 men H376 that [were] with him, faint, H5889 yet pursuing H7291 (QalActPtc) [them].

And Gideon cometh in unto the Jordan, passing over, he and the three hundred men who are with him-wearied, and pursuing,

He said to the men of Succoth, “Please give loaves of bread to the people who follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”

And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto the men H582 of Succoth, H5523 Give, H5414 (QalImpv) I pray you, loaves H3603 of bread H3899 unto the people H5971 that follow H7272 me; for they [be] faint, H5889 and I am pursuing H7291 (QalActPtc) after H310 Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna, H6759 kings H4428 of Midian. H4080

and he saith to the men of Succoth, ‘Give, I pray you, cakes of bread to the people who are at my feet, for they are wearied, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna kings of Midian.’

He went up there to Penuel, and spoke to them in the same way; and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered.

And he went up H5927 (QalImpf) thence to Penuel, H6439 and spake H1696 (PielImpf) unto them likewise: H2063 and the men H582 of Penuel H6439 answered H6030 (QalImpf) him as the men H582 of Succoth H5523 had answered H6030 (QalPerf) [him].

And he goeth up thence to Penuel, and speaketh unto them thus; and the men of Penuel answer him as the men of Succoth answered.

He spoke also to the men of Penuel, saying, “When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.”

And he spake H559 (QalImpf) also unto the men H582 of Penuel, H6439 saying, H559 (QalInf) When I come again H7725 (QalInf) in peace, H7965 I will break down H5422 (QalImpf) this tower. H4026

And he speaketh also to the men of Penuel, saying, ‘In my turning back in peace, I break down this tower.’

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their armies with them, about fifteen thousand men, all who were left of all the army of the children of the east; for there fell one hundred twenty thousand men who drew sword.

Now Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 [were] in Karkor, H7174 and their hosts H4264 with them, about fifteen H2568 H6240 thousand H505 [men], all that were left H3498 (NiphPtc) of all the hosts H4264 of the children H1121 of the east: H6924 for there fell H5307 (QalActPtc) an hundred H3967 and twenty H6242 thousand H505 men H376 that drew H8025 (QalActPtc) sword. And Zebah and Zalmunna are in Karkor, and their camps with them, about fifteen thousand, all who are left of all the camp of the sons of the east; and those falling are a hundred and twenty thousand men, drawing sword.

He caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him; and he described for him the princes of Succoth, and its elders, seventy-seven men.

And caught H3920 (QalImpf) a young man H5288 of the men H582 of Succoth, H5523 and enquired H7592 (QalImpf) of him: and he described H3789 (QalImpf) unto him the princes H8269 of Succoth, H5523 and the elders H2205 thereof, [even] threescore and seventeen H7657 H7651 men. H376

and captureth a young man of the men of Succoth, and asketh him, and he describeth unto him the heads of Succoth, and its elders-seventy and seven men.

He came to the men of Succoth, and said, “See Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom you taunted me, saying, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your men who are weary?’ ”

And he came H935 (QalImpf) unto the men H582 of Succoth, H5523 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Behold Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna, H6759 with whom ye did upbraid H2778 (PielPerf) me, saying, H559 (QalInf) [Are] the hands H3709 of Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 now in thine hand, H3027 that we should give H5414 (QalImpf) bread H3899 unto thy men H582 [that are] weary? H3287

And he cometh in unto the men of Succoth, and saith, ‘Lo Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye reproached me, saying, Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand that we give to thy men who are wearied bread?’

He took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

And he took H3947 (QalImpf) the elders H2205 of the city, H5892 and thorns H6975 of the wilderness H4057 and briers, H1303 and with them he taught H3045 (HiphImpf) the men H582 of Succoth. H5523

And he taketh the elders of the city, and the thorns of the wilderness, and the threshing instruments, and teacheth by them the men of Succoth,

He broke down the tower of Penuel, and killed the men of the city.

And he beat down H5422 (QalPerf) the tower H4026 of Penuel, H6439 and slew H2026 (QalImpf) the men H582 of the city. H5892

and the tower of Penuel he hath broken down, and slayeth the men of the city.

Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men were they whom you killed at Tabor?” They answered, “They were like you. They all resembled the children of a king.”

Then said H559 (QalImpf) he unto Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna, H6759 What H375 manner of men H582 [were they] whom ye slew H2026 (QalPerf) at Tabor? H8396 And they answered, H559 (QalImpf) As thou H3644 [art], so [were] they; each one H259 resembled H8389 the children H1121 of a king. H4428

And he saith unto Zebah and unto Zalmunna, ‘How-the men whom ye slew in Tabor?’ and they say, ‘As thou-so they, one-as the form of the king’s sons.’

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “You rise and fall on us; for as the man is, so is his strength.” Gideon arose, and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels’ necks.

Then Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 said, H559 (QalImpf) Rise H6965 (QalImpv) thou, and fall H6293 (QalImpv) upon us: for as the man H376 [is, so is] his strength. H1369 And Gideon H1439 arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and slew H2026 (QalImpf) Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna, H6759 and took away H3947 (QalImpf) the ornaments H7720 that [were] on their camels’ H1581 necks. H6677

And Zebah saith-also Zalmunna-‘Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man-his might;’ and Gideon riseth, and slayeth Zebah and Zalmunna, and taketh their round ornaments which are on the necks of their camels.

Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, both you, your son, and your son’s son also; for you have saved us out of the hand of Midian.”

Then the men H376 of Israel H3478 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Gideon, H1439 Rule H4910 (QalImpv) thou over us, both thou, and thy son, H1121 and thy son’s H1121 son H1121 also: for thou hast delivered H3467 (HiphPerf) us from the hand H3027 of Midian. H4080

And the men of Israel say unto Gideon, ‘Rule over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, for thou hast saved us from the hand of Midian.’

Gideon said to them, “I do have a request: that you would each give me the earrings of his plunder.” (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

And Gideon H1439 said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, I would desire H7592 (QalImpf) a request H7596 of you, that ye would give H5414 (QalImpv) me every man H376 the earrings H5141 of his prey. H7998 (For they had golden H2091 earrings, H5141 because they [were] Ishmaelites. H3459)

And Gideon saith unto them, ‘Let me ask of you a petition, and give ye to me each the ring of his prey, for they have rings of gold, for they are Ishmaelites.’

They answered, “We will willingly give them.” They spread a garment, and every man threw the earrings of his plunder into it.

And they answered, H559 (QalImpf) We will willingly H5414 (QalInf) give H5414 (QalImpf) [them]. And they spread H6566 (QalImpf) a garment, H8071 and did cast H7993 (HiphImpf) therein every man H376 the earrings H5141 of his prey. H7998

And they say, ‘We certainly give;’ and they spread out the garment, and cast thither each the ring of his prey;

“Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”

Speak, H1696 (PielImpv) I pray you, in the ears H241 of all the men H1167 of Shechem, H7927 Whether [is] better H2896 for you, either that all the sons H1121 of Jerubbaal, H3378 [which are] threescore and ten H7657 persons, H376 reign H4910 (QalInf) over you, or that one H259 reign H4910 (QalInf) over you? remember H2142 (QalPerf) also that I [am] your bone H6106 and your flesh. ‘Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, Which is good for you-the ruling over you of seventy men (all the sons of Jerubbaal), or the ruling over you of one man?-and ye have remembered that I am your bone and your flesh.’

They gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal Berith, with which Abimelech hired vain and reckless fellows who followed him.

And they gave H5414 (QalImpf) him threescore and ten H7657 [pieces] of silver H3701 out of the house H1004 of Baalberith, H1170 wherewith Abimelech H40 hired H7936 (QalImpf) vain H7386 and light H6348 (QalActPtc) persons, H582 which followed H3212 (QalImpf) him. H310

and they give to him seventy silverings out of the house of Baal-Berith, and Abimelech hireth with them men, vain and unstable, and they go after him;

He went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy persons, on one stone; but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.

And he went H935 (QalImpf) unto his father’s H1 house H1004 at Ophrah, H6084 and slew H2026 (QalImpf) his brethren H251 the sons H1121 of Jerubbaal, H3378 [being] threescore and ten H7657 persons, H376 upon one H259 stone: H68 notwithstanding yet Jotham H3147 the youngest H6996 son H1121 of Jerubbaal H3378 was left; H3498 (NiphImpf) for he hid H2244 (NiphPerf) himself.

and he goeth into the house of his father at Ophrah, and slayeth his brethren, sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone; and Jotham, youngest son of Jerubbaal, is left, for he was hidden.

“But the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I stop producing my oil, with which they honor God and man by me, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

But the olive tree H2132 said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, Should I leave H2308 (QalPerf) my fatness, H1880 wherewith by me they honour H3513 (PielImpf) God H430 and man, H582 and go H1980 (QalPerf) to be promoted H5128 (QalInf) over the trees? H6086

And the olive saith to them, Have I ceased from my fatness, by which they honour gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

“The vine said to them, ‘Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

And the vine saith to them, Have I ceased from my new wine, which is rejoicing gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

and you have risen up against my father’s house today and have slain his sons, seventy persons, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);

and ye have risen against the house of my father to-day, and slay his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and cause Abimelech son of his handmaid to reign over the masters of Shechem, because he is your brother-

Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Isn’t he the son of Jerubbaal? Isn’t Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem, but why should we serve him?

H3378 and Zebul H2083 his officer? H6496 serve H5647 (QalImpv) the men H582 of Hamor H2544 the father H1 of Shechem: H7927 for why should we serve H5647 (QalImpf) him?

And Gaal son of Ebed saith, ‘Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we serve him? is he not son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his commander? Serve ye the men of Hamor father of Shechem, and wherefore do we serve him-we?

When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Behold, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” Zebul said to him, “You see the shadows of the mountains as if they were men.”

And when Gaal H1603 saw H7200 (QalImpf) the people, H5971 he said H559 (QalImpf) to Zebul, H2083 Behold, there come H3381 people H5971 down H3381 (QalActPtc) from the top H7218 of the mountains. and Gaal seeth the people, and saith unto Zebul, ‘Lo, people are coming down from the top of the hills;’ and Zebul saith unto him, ‘The shadow of the hills thou art seeing like men.’

All the people likewise each cut down his bough, followed Abimelech, and put them at the base of the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

And all the people also cut down each one his bough, and go after Abimelech, and set them at the high place, and burn by these the high place with fire, and also all the men of the tower of Shechem die, about a thousand men and women.

But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women of the city fled there, and shut themselves in, and went up to the roof of the tower.

But there was a strong H5797 tower H4026 within H8432 the city, H5892 and thither fled H5127 (QalImpf) all the men H582 and women, H802 and all they H1167 of the city, H5892 and shut H5462 (QalImpf) [it] to them, and gat them up H5927 (QalImpf) to the top H1406 of the tower. H4026

and a strong tower hath been in the midst of the city, and thither flee do all the men and the women, and all the masters of the city, and they shut it behind them, and go up on the roof of the tower.

When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they each departed to his place.

And when the men H376 of Israel H3478 saw H7200 (QalImpf) that Abimelech H40 was dead, H4191 (QalPerf) they departed H3212 (QalImpf) every man H376 unto his place. H4725

And the men of Israel see that Abimelech is dead, and go each one to his place;

and God repaid all the wickedness of the men of Shechem on their heads; and the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal came on them.

And all the evil H7451 of the men H582 of Shechem H7927 did God H430 render H7725 (HiphPerf) upon their heads: H7218 and upon them came H935 (QalImpf) the curse H7045 of Jotham H3147 the son H1121 of Jerubbaal. H3378

and all the evil of the men of Shechem hath God turned back on their head, and come unto them doth the cursing of Jotham son of Jerubbaal.

After Abimelech, Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, arose to save Israel. He lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim.

And after H310 Abimelech H40 there arose H6965 (QalImpf) to defend H3467 (HiphInf) Israel H3478 Tola H8439 the son H1121 of Puah, H6312 the son H1121 of Dodo, H1734 a man H376 of Issachar; H3485 and he dwelt H3427 (QalActPtc) in Shamir H8069 in mount H2022 Ephraim. H669

And there riseth after Abimelech, to save Israel, Tola son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, and he is dwelling in Shamir, in the hill-country of Ephraim,

The people, the princes of Gilead, said to one another, “Who is the man who will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

And the people H5971 [and] princes H8269 of Gilead H1568 said H559 (QalImpf) one H376 to another, H7453 What man H376 [is he] that will begin H2490 (HiphImpf) to fight H3898 (NiphInf) against the children H1121 of Ammon? H5983 he shall be head H7218 over all the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of Gilead. H1568

And the people-heads of Gilead-say one unto another, ‘Who is the man that doth begin to fight against the Bene-Ammon? he is for head to all inhabitants of Gilead.’

Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob. Outlaws joined up with Jephthah, and they went out with him.

Then Jephthah H3316 fled H1272 (QalImpf) from H6440 his brethren, H251 and dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) in the land H776 of Tob: H2897 and there were gathered H3950 (HithImpf) vain H7386 men H582 to Jephthah, H3316 and went out H3318 (QalImpf) with him.

And Jephthah fleeth from the face of his brethren, and dwelleth in the land of Tob; and vain men gather themselves together unto Jephthah, and they go out with him.

At the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed. She was a virgin. It became a custom in Israel

And it came to pass at the end H7093 of two H8147 months, H2320 that she returned H7725 (QalImpf) unto her father, H1 who did H6213 (QalImpf) with her [according] to his vow H5088 which he had vowed: H5087 (QalPerf) and she knew H3045 (QalPerf) no man. H376 And it was a custom H2706 in Israel, H3478

and it cometh to pass at the end of two months that she turneth back unto her father, and he doth to her his vow which he hath vowed, and she knew not a man; and it is a statute in Israel:

The men of Ephraim were gathered together, and passed northward; and they said to Jephthah, “Why did you pass over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didn’t call us to go with you? We will burn your house around you with fire!”

And the men of Ephraim are called together, and pass over northward, and say to Jephthah, ‘Wherefore has thou passed over to fight against the Bene-Ammon, and on us hast not called to go with thee? thy house we burn over thee with fire.’

Jephthah said to them, “I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, you didn’t save me out of their hand.

And Jephthah saith unto them, ‘A man of great strife I have been (I and my people) with the Bene-Ammon, and I call you, and ye have not saved me out of their hand,
