Moses spoke to the children of Israel; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, a total of twelve rods. Aaron’s rod was among their rods.

Moses brought out all the rods from before Yahweh to all the children of Israel. They looked, and each man took his rod.

Yahweh said to Moses, “Put back the rod of Aaron before the covenant, to be kept for a token against the children of rebellion; that you may make an end of their complaining against me, that they not die.”

The children of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, “Behold, we perish! We are undone! We are all undone!

Yahweh said to Aaron, “You and your sons and your fathers’ house with you shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary; and you and your sons with you shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.

Bring your brothers also, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, near with you, that they may be joined to you, and minister to you; but you and your sons with you shall be before the Tent of the Testimony.

“You shall perform the duty of the sanctuary and the duty of the altar, that there be no more wrath on the children of Israel.

Behold, I myself have taken your brothers the Levites from among the children of Israel. They are a gift to you, dedicated to Yahweh, to do the service of the Tent of Meeting.

και εγω ειληφα τους αδελφους υμων τους λευιτας εκ μεσου των υιων ισραηλ δομα δεδομενον κυριω λειτουργειν τας λειτουργιας της σκηνης του μαρτυριου

You and your sons with you shall keep your priesthood for everything of the altar, and for that within the veil. You shall serve. I give you the service of the priesthood as a gift. The stranger who comes near shall be put to death.”

Yahweh spoke to Aaron, “Behold, I myself have given you the command of my wave offerings, even all the holy things of the children of Israel. I have given them to you by reason of the anointing, and to your sons, as a portion forever.

This shall be yours of the most holy things from the fire: every offering of theirs, even every meal offering of theirs, and every sin offering of theirs, and every trespass offering of theirs, which they shall give to me, shall be most holy for you and for your sons.

και τουτο εστω υμιν απο των ηγιασμενων αγιων των καρπωματων απο παντων των δωρων αυτων και απο παντων των θυσιασματων αυτων και απο πασης πλημμελειας αυτων και απο πασων των αμαρτιων οσα αποδιδοασιν μοι απο παντων των αγιων σοι εσται και τοις υιοις σου

“This is yours, too: the wave offering of their gift, even all the wave offerings of the children of Israel. I have given them to you, and to your sons and to your daughters with you, as a portion forever. Everyone who is clean in your house shall eat of it.

And this is thine; the heave offering H8641 of their gift, H4976 with all the wave offerings H8573 of the children H1121 of Israel: H3478 I have given H5414 (QalPerf) them unto thee, and to thy sons H1121 and to thy daughters H1323 with thee, by a statute H2706 for ever: H5769 every one that is clean H2889 in thy house H1004 shall eat H398 (QalImpf) of it.

και τουτο εσται υμιν απαρχη δοματων αυτων απο παντων των επιθεματων των υιων ισραηλ σοι δεδωκα αυτα και τοις υιοις σου και ταις θυγατρασιν σου μετα σου νομιμον αιωνιον πας καθαρος εν τω οικω σου εδεται αυτα

You shall redeem those who are to be redeemed of them from a month old, according to your estimation, for five shekels of money, according to the shekel° of the sanctuary, which weighs twenty gerahs.°

Numbers 18:16a A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces.

And those that are to be redeemed H6299 (QalPasPtc) from a month H2320 old H1121 shalt thou redeem, H6299 (QalImpf) according to thine estimation, H6187 for the money H3701 of five H2568 shekels, H8255 after the shekel H8255 of the sanctuary, H6944 which is twenty H6242 gerahs. H1626

All the wave offerings of the holy things which the children of Israel offer to Yahweh, I have given you and your sons and your daughters with you, as a portion forever. It is a covenant of salt forever before Yahweh to you and to your offspring with you.”

Yahweh said to Aaron, “You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Israel.

And the Lord H3068 spake H559 (QalImpf) unto Aaron, H175 Thou shalt have no inheritance H5157 (QalImpf) in their land, H776 neither shalt thou have any part H2506 among H8432 them: I am thy part H2506 and thine inheritance H5159 among H8432 the children H1121 of Israel. H3478

“To the children of Levi, behold, I have given all the tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service which they serve, even the service of the Tent of Meeting.

Henceforth the children of Israel shall not come near the Tent of Meeting, lest they bear sin, and die.

Neither must the children H1121 of Israel H3478 henceforth H5750 come nigh H7126 (QalImpf) the tabernacle H168 of the congregation, H4150 lest they bear H5375 (QalInf) sin, H2399 and die.^§ H4191 (QalInf)

και ου προσελευσονται ετι οι υιοι ισραηλ εις την σκηνην του μαρτυριου λαβειν αμαρτιαν θανατηφορον

But the Levites shall do the service of the Tent of Meeting, and they shall bear their iniquity. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. Among the children of Israel, they shall have no inheritance.

But the Levites H3881 shall do H5647 (QalPerf) the service H5656 of the tabernacle H168 of the congregation, H4150 and they shall bear H5375 (QalImpf) their iniquity: H5771 it shall be a statute H2708 for ever H5769 throughout your generations, H1755 that among H8432 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 they have H5157 (QalImpf) no inheritance. For the tithe of the children of Israel, which they offer as a wave offering to Yahweh, I have given to the Levites for an inheritance. Therefore I have said to them, ‘Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.’”

οτι τα επιδεκατα των υιων ισραηλ οσα αν αφορισωσιν κυριω αφαιρεμα δεδωκα τοις λευιταις εν κληρω δια τουτο ειρηκα αυτοις εν μεσω υιων ισραηλ ου κληρονομησουσιν κληρον

“Moreover you shall speak to the Levites, and tell them, ‘When you take of the children of Israel the tithe which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall offer up a wave offering of it for Yahweh, a tithe of the tithe.

Thus you also shall offer a wave offering to Yahweh of all your tithes, which you receive of the children of Israel; and of it you shall give Yahweh’s wave offering to Aaron the priest.

Thus ye also shall offer H7311 (HiphImpf) an heave offering H8641 unto the Lord H3068 of all your tithes, H4643 which ye receive H3947 (QalImpf) of the children H1121 of Israel; H3478 and ye shall give H5414 (QalPerf) thereof the Lord’s H3068 heave offering H8641 to Aaron H175 the priest. H3548

ουτως αφελειτε και υμεις απο των αφαιρεματων κυριου απο παντων επιδεκατων υμων οσα εαν λαβητε παρα των υιων ισραηλ και δωσετε απ αυτων αφαιρεμα κυριω ααρων τω ιερει

You shall bear no sin by reason of it, when you have heaved from it its best. You shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, that you not die.’”

“This is the statute of the law which Yahweh has commanded. Tell the children of Israel to bring you a red heifer without spot, in which is no defect, and which was never yoked.

This is the ordinance H2708 of the law H8451 which the Lord H3068 hath commanded, H6680 (PielPerf) saying, H559 (QalInf) Speak H1696 (PielImpv) unto the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 that they bring H3947 (QalImpf) thee a red H122 heifer H6510 without spot, H8549 wherein is no blemish, H3971 and upon which never H3808 came H5927 (QalPerf) yoke: H5923

αυτη η διαστολη του νομου οσα συνεταξεν κυριος λεγων λαλησον τοις υιοις ισραηλ και λαβετωσαν προς σε δαμαλιν πυρραν αμωμον ητις ουκ εχει εν αυτη μωμον και η ουκ επεβληθη επ αυτην ζυγος

“A man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up outside of the camp in a clean place; and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for use in water for cleansing impurity. It is a sin offering.

And a man H376 that is clean H2889 shall gather H622 (QalPerf) up the ashes H665 of the heifer, H6510 and lay them up H3240 (HiphPerf) without H2351 the camp H4264 in a clean H2889 place, H4725 and it shall be kept H4931 for the congregation H5712 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 for a water H4325 of separation: H5079 it is a purification for sin. και συναξει ανθρωπος καθαρος την σποδον της δαμαλεως και αποθησει εξω της παρεμβολης εις τοπον καθαρον και εσται τη συναγωγη υιων ισραηλ εις διατηρησιν υδωρ ραντισμου αγνισμα εστιν

He who gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening. It shall be to the children of Israel, and to the stranger who lives as a foreigner among them, for a statute forever.

And he that gathereth H622 (QalActPtc) the ashes H665 of the heifer H6510 shall wash H3526 (PielPerf) his clothes, H899 and be unclean H2930 (QalPerf) until the even: H6153 and it shall be unto the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 and unto the stranger H1616 that sojourneth H1481 (QalActPtc) among H8432 them, for a statute H2708 for ever. και πλυνει τα ιματια ο συναγων την σποδιαν της δαμαλεως και ακαθαρτος εσται εως εσπερας και εσται τοις υιοις ισραηλ και τοις προσκειμενοις προσηλυτοις νομιμον αιωνιον

The children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month. The people stayed in Kadesh. Miriam died there, and was buried there.

Then came H935 (QalImpf) the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 even the whole congregation, H5712 into the desert H4057 of Zin H6790 in the first H7223 month: H2320 and the people H5971 abode H3427 (QalImpf) in Kadesh; H6946 and Miriam H4813 died H4191 (QalImpf) there, and was buried H6912 (NiphImpf) there.

Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you didn’t believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”

And the Lord H3068 spake H559 (QalImpf) unto Moses H4872 and Aaron, H175 Because ye believed H539 (HiphPerf) me not, to sanctify H6942 (HiphInf) me in the eyes H5869 of the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 therefore ye shall not bring H935 (HiphImpf) this congregation H6951 into the land H776 which I have given H5414 (QalPerf) them.

και ειπεν κυριος προς μωυσην και ααρων οτι ουκ επιστευσατε αγιασαι με εναντιον υιων ισραηλ δια τουτο ουκ εισαξετε υμεις την συναγωγην ταυτην εις την γην ην δεδωκα αυτοις

These are the waters of Meribah;° because the children of Israel strove with Yahweh, and he was sanctified in them.

Numbers 20:13 “Meribah” means “quarreling”.

This is H1992 the water H4325 of Meribah;° H4809 because the children H1121 of Israel H3478 strove H7378 (QalPerf) with the Lord, H3068 and he was sanctified H6942 (NiphImpf) in them.

τουτο υδωρ αντιλογιας οτι ελοιδορηθησαν οι υιοι ισραηλ εναντι κυριου και ηγιασθη εν αυτοις

The children of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway; and if we drink your water, I and my livestock, then I will give its price. Only let me, without doing anything else, pass through on my feet.”

They traveled from Kadesh, and the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor.

And the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 even the whole congregation, H5712 journeyed H5265 (QalImpf) from Kadesh, H6946 and came H935 (QalImpf) unto mount H2022 Hor. H2023

και απηραν εκ καδης και παρεγενοντο οι υιοι ισραηλ πασα η συναγωγη εις ωρ το ορος

“Aaron shall be gathered to his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah.

Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up to Mount Hor;

και εκδυσον ααρων την στολην αυτου και ενδυσον ελεαζαρ τον υιον αυτου και ααρων προστεθεις αποθανετω εκει

Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them on Eleazar his son. Aaron died there on the top of the mountain, and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.

And Moses H4872 stripped H6584 (HiphImpf) Aaron H175 of his garments, H899 and put H3847 (HiphImpf) them upon Eleazar H499 his son; H1121 and Aaron H175 died H4191 (QalImpf) there in the top H7218 of the mount: H2022 and Moses H4872 and Eleazar H499 came down H3381 (QalImpf) from the mount. H2022
