So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife; and he went in to her, and Yahweh enabled her to conceive, and she bore a son.

This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to Yahweh^§ of Armies in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to Yahweh, were there.

Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread. Those who were hungry are satisfied. Yes, the barren has borne seven. She who has many children languishes.

Now the sons of Eli were wicked men. They didn’t know Yahweh.

Yahweh visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. The child Samuel grew before Yahweh.

Why do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering, which I have commanded in my habitation, and honor your sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel my people?’

This will be the sign to you that will come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they will both die.

Yahweh called yet again, “Samuel!” Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; for you called me.” He answered, “I didn’t call, my son. Lie down again.”

So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of Armies, who sits above the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

και ηλι υιος ενενηκοντα ετων και οι οφθαλμοι αυτου επανεστησαν και ουκ εβλεπεν και ειπεν ηλι τοις ανδρασιν τοις περιεστηκοσιν αυτω τις η φωνη του ηχους τουτου

The man said to Eli, “I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” He said, “How did the matter go, my son?”

And the man H376 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Eli, H5941 I am he that came H935 (QalActPtc) out of the army, H4634 and I fled H5127 (QalPerf) to day H3117 out of the army. H4634 And he said, H559 (QalImpf) What is there done,^§ H1697 my son? H1121

1 Samuel 4:16 Heb. is the thing

και ο ανηρ σπευσας προσηλθεν προς ηλι και ειπεν αυτω εγω ειμι ο ηκων εκ της παρεμβολης καγω πεφευγα εκ της παραταξεως σημερον και ειπεν τι το γεγονος ρημα τεκνον

He who brought the news answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and God’s ark has been captured.”

And the messenger H1319 (PielPtc) answered H6030 (QalImpf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) Israel H3478 is fled H5127 (QalPerf) before H6440 the Philistines, H6430 and there hath been also a great H1419 slaughter H4046 among the people, H5971 and thy two H8147 sons H1121 also, Hophni H2652 and Phinehas, H6372 are dead, H4191 (QalPerf) and the ark H727 of God H430 is taken. και απεκριθη το παιδαριον και ειπεν πεφευγεν ανηρ ισραηλ εκ προσωπου αλλοφυλων και εγενετο πληγη μεγαλη εν τω λαω και αμφοτεροι οι υιοι σου τεθνηκασιν και η κιβωτος του θεου ελημφθη

About the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for you have given birth to a son.” But she didn’t answer, neither did she regard it.

και εν τω καιρω αυτης αποθνησκει και ειπον αυτη αι γυναικες αι παρεστηκυιαι αυτη μη φοβου οτι υιον τετοκας και ουκ απεκριθη και ουκ ενοησεν η καρδια αυτης

“Now therefore take and prepare yourselves a new cart and two milk cows on which there has come no yoke; and tie the cows to the cart, and bring their calves home from them;

και νυν λαβετε και ποιησατε αμαξαν καινην και δυο βοας πρωτοτοκουσας ανευ των τεκνων και ζευξατε τας βοας εν τη αμαξη και απαγαγετε τα τεκνα απο οπισθεν αυτων εις οικον

The men did so, and took two milk cows and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home.

και εποιησαν οι αλλοφυλοι ουτως και ελαβον δυο βοας πρωτοτοκουσας και εζευξαν αυτας εν τη αμαξη και τα τεκνα αυτων απεκωλυσαν εις οικον

The men of Kiriath Jearim came and took Yahweh’s ark, and brought it into Abinadab’s house on the hill, and consecrated Eleazar his son to keep Yahweh’s ark.

και ερχονται οι ανδρες καριαθιαριμ και αναγουσιν την κιβωτον διαθηκης κυριου και εισαγουσιν αυτην εις οικον αμιναδαβ τον εν τω βουνω και τον ελεαζαρ υιον αυτου ηγιασαν φυλασσειν την κιβωτον διαθηκης κυριου

Then the children of Israel removed the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and served Yahweh only.

Then the children H1121 of Israel H3478 did put away H5493 (HiphImpf) Baalim H1168 and Ashtaroth, H6252 and served H5647 (QalImpf) the Lord H3068 only.

και περιειλον οι υιοι ισραηλ τας βααλιμ και τα αλση ασταρωθ και εδουλευσαν κυριω μονω

They gathered together to Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before Yahweh, and fasted on that day, and said there, “We have sinned against Yahweh.” Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpah.

και συνηχθησαν εις μασσηφαθ και υδρευονται υδωρ και εξεχεαν ενωπιον κυριου επι την γην και ενηστευσαν εν τη ημερα εκεινη και ειπαν ημαρτηκαμεν ενωπιον κυριου και εδικαζεν σαμουηλ τους υιους ισραηλ εις μασσηφαθ

When the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. When the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

And when the Philistines H6430 heard H8085 (QalImpf) that the children H1121 of Israel H3478 were gathered together H6908 (HithPerf) to Mizpeh, H4708 the lords H5633 of the Philistines H6430 went up H5927 (QalImpf) against Israel. και ηκουσαν οι αλλοφυλοι οτι συνηθροισθησαν παντες οι υιοι ισραηλ εις μασσηφαθ και ανεβησαν σατραπαι αλλοφυλων επι ισραηλ και ακουουσιν οι υιοι ισραηλ και εφοβηθησαν απο προσωπου αλλοφυλων

The children of Israel said to Samuel, “Don’t stop crying to Yahweh our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.”

And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 said H559 (QalImpf) to Samuel, H8050 Cease H2790 (HiphImpf) not to cry^§ H2199 (QalInf) unto the Lord H3068 our God H430 for us, that he will save H3467 (HiphImpf) us out of the hand H3027 of the Philistines. H6430

1 Samuel 7:8 Heb. Be not silent from us from crying

και ειπαν οι υιοι ισραηλ προς σαμουηλ μη παρασιωπησης αφ ημων του μη βοαν προς κυριον θεον σου και σωσει ημας εκ χειρος αλλοφυλων

When Samuel was old, he made his sons judges over Israel.

And it came to pass, when Samuel H8050 was old, H2204 (QalPerf) that he made H7760 (QalImpf) his sons H1121 judges H8199 (QalActPtc) over Israel. H3478

και εγενετο ως εγηρασεν σαμουηλ και κατεστησεν τους υιους αυτου δικαστας τω ισραηλ

Now the name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah. They were judges in Beersheba.

και ταυτα τα ονοματα των υιων αυτου πρωτοτοκος ιωηλ και ονομα του δευτερου αβια δικασται εν βηρσαβεε

His sons didn’t walk in his ways, but turned away after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.

And his sons H1121 walked H1980 (QalPerf) not in his ways, H1870 but turned aside H5186 (QalImpf) after H310 lucre, H1215 and took H3947 (QalImpf) bribes, H7810 and perverted H5186 (HiphImpf) judgment. H4941

και ουκ επορευθησαν οι υιοι αυτου εν οδω αυτου και εξεκλιναν οπισω της συντελειας και ελαμβανον δωρα και εξεκλινον δικαιωματα

They said to him, “Behold, you are old, and your sons don’t walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Behold, thou art old, H2204 (QalPerf) and thy sons H1121 walk H1980 (QalPerf) not in thy ways: H1870 now make H7760 (QalImpv) us a king H4428 to judge H8199 (QalInf) us like all the nations. H1471

και ειπαν αυτω ιδου συ γεγηρακας και οι υιοι σου ου πορευονται εν τη οδω σου και νυν καταστησον εφ ημας βασιλεα δικαζειν ημας καθα και τα λοιπα εθνη
