Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.

προελθετω ο κυριος μου εμπροσθεν του παιδος εγω δε ενισχυσω εν τη οδω κατα σχολην της πορευσεως της εναντιον μου και κατα ποδα των παιδαριων εως του με ελθειν προς τον κυριον μου εις σηιρ

So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.

Esau lived in the hill country of Seir. Esau is Edom.

Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs who came of the Horites, the children of Seir in the land of Edom.

ενδεκα ημερων εν χωρηβ οδος επ ορος σηιρ εως καδης βαρνη

The Amorites, who lived in that hill country, came out against you and chased you as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah.

Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as Yahweh spoke to me; and we encircled Mount Seir many days.

και επιστραφεντες απηραμεν εις την ερημον οδον θαλασσαν ερυθραν ον τροπον ελαλησεν κυριος προς με και εκυκλωσαμεν το ορος το σηιρ ημερας πολλας

Command the people, saying, ‘You are to pass through the border of your brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore be careful.

και τω λαω εντειλαι λεγων υμεις παραπορευεσθε δια των οριων των αδελφων υμων υιων ησαυ οι κατοικουσιν εν σηιρ και φοβηθησονται υμας και ευλαβηθησονται υμας σφοδρα

Don’t contend with them; for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession.

μη συναψητε προς αυτους πολεμον ου γαρ μη δω υμιν απο της γης αυτων ουδε βημα ποδος οτι εν κληρω δεδωκα τοις υιοις ησαυ το ορος το σηιρ

So we passed by from our brothers, the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah from Elath and from Ezion Geber. We turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

And when we passed H5674 (QalImpf) by from our brethren H251 the children H1121 of Esau, H6215 which dwelt H3427 (QalActPtc) in Seir, H8165 through the way H1870 of the plain H6160 from Elath, H359 and from Eziongaber, H6100 we turned H6437 (QalImpf) and passed H5674 (QalImpf) by the way H1870 of the wilderness H4057 of Moab. και παρηλθομεν τους αδελφους ημων υιους ησαυ τους κατοικουντας εν σηιρ παρα την οδον την αραβα απο αιλων και απο γασιωνγαβερ και επιστρεψαντες παρηλθομεν οδον ερημον μωαβ

The Horites also lived in Seir in the past, but the children of Esau succeeded them. They destroyed them from before them, and lived in their place, as Israel did to the land of his possession, which Yahweh gave to them.)

The Horims H2752 also dwelt H3427 (QalPerf) in Seir H8165 beforetime; H6440 but the children H1121 of Esau H6215 succeeded H3423 (QalImpf) them, when they had destroyed H8045 (HiphImpf) them from before H6440 them, and dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) in their stead; as Israel H3478 did H6213 (QalPerf) unto the land H776 of his possession, H3425 which the Lord H3068 gave H5414 (QalPerf) unto them.

και εν σηιρ ενεκαθητο ο χορραιος προτερον και υιοι ησαυ απωλεσαν αυτους και εξετριψαν αυτους απο προσωπου αυτων και κατωκισθησαν αντ αυτων ον τροπον εποιησεν ισραηλ την γην της κληρονομιας αυτου ην δεδωκεν κυριος αυτοις

as he did for the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them; and they succeeded them, and lived in their place even to this day.

ωσπερ εποιησαν τοις υιοις ησαυ τοις κατοικουσιν εν σηιρ ον τροπον εξετριψαν τον χορραιον απο προσωπου αυτων και κατεκληρονομησαν και κατωκισθησαν αντ αυτων εως της ημερας ταυτης

καθως εποιησαν μοι οι υιοι ησαυ οι κατοικουντες εν σηιρ και οι μωαβιται οι κατοικουντες εν αροηρ εως παρελθω τον ιορδανην εις την γην ην κυριος ο θεος ημων διδωσιν ημιν

He said, “Yahweh came from Sinai, and rose from Seir to them. He shone from Mount Paran. He came from the ten thousands of holy ones. At his right hand was a fiery law for them.^‡

τα προς τω ορει απο ορους αχελ και ο προσαναβαινει εις σηιρ και εως βααλγαδ και τα πεδια του λιβανου υπο το ορος το αερμων και παντας τους βασιλεις αυτων ελαβεν και ανειλεν αυτους και απεκτεινεν

These are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the children of Israel struck beyond the Jordan westward, from Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon even to Mount Halak, that goes up to Seir. Joshua gave it to the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;

and the border turned about from Baalah westward to Mount Seir, and passed along to the side of Mount Jearim (also called Chesalon) on the north, and went down to Beth Shemesh, and passed along by Timnah;

I gave to Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave to Esau Mount Seir, to possess it. Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

“Yahweh, when you went out of Seir, when you marched out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, the sky also dropped. Yes, the clouds dropped water.

υιοι σηιρ λωταν σωβαλ σεβεγων ανα δησων ωσαρ δαισων

Some of them, even of the sons of Simeon, five hundred men, went to Mount Seir, having for their captains Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi.

Now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom you would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned away from them, and didn’t destroy them;

When they began to sing and to praise, Yahweh set ambushers against the children of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were struck.

και εν τω αρξασθαι της αινεσεως αυτου της εξομολογησεως εδωκεν κυριος πολεμειν τους υιους αμμων επι μωαβ και ορος σηιρ τους εξελθοντας επι ιουδαν και ετροπωθησαν

For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. When they had finished the inhabitants of Seir, everyone helped to destroy each other.

For the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 and Moab H4124 stood up H5975 (QalImpf) against the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of mount H2022 Seir, H8165 utterly to slay H2763 (HiphInf) and destroy H8045 (HiphInf) [them]: and when they had made an end H3615 (PielInf) of the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of Seir, H8165 every one H376 helped H5826 (QalPerf) to destroy H4889 another. Amaziah took courage, and led his people out and went to the Valley of Salt, and struck ten thousand of the children of Seir.

Now after Amaziah had come from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them and burned incense to them.

Thus I will make Mount Seir an astonishment and a desolation. I will cut off from it him who passes through and him who returns.

As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel because it was desolate, so I will do to you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir, and all Edom, even all of it. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.’ ”
