[1] After the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag, [2] on the third day, behold,§ a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the earth and showed respect. [3] David said to him, “Where do you come from?”He said to him, “I have escaped out of the camp of Israel.” [4] David said to him, “How did it go? Please tell me.”He answered, “The people have fled from the battle, and many of the people also have fallen and are dead. Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.” [5] David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?” [6] The young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance on Mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning on his spear; and behold, the chariots and the horsemen followed close behind him. [7] When he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. I answered, ‘Here I am.’ [8] He said to me, ‘Who are you?’ I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’ [9] He said to me, ‘Please stand beside me, and kill me, for anguish has taken hold of me because my life lingers in me.’ [10] So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.” [11] Then David took hold on his clothes and tore them; and all the men who were with him did likewise. [12] They mourned, wept, and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Yahweh,§ and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. [13] David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?”He answered, “I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite.” [14] David said to him, “Why were you not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy Yahweh’s anointed?” [15] David called one of the young men and said, “Go near, and cut him down!” He struck him so that he died. [16] David said to him, “Your blood be on your head, for your mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have slain Yahweh’s anointed.’ ” [17] David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son [18] (and he commanded them to teach the children of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):
[19] “Your glory, Israel, was slain on your high places!
How the mighty have fallen!
[20] Don’t tell it in Gath.
Don’t publish it in the streets of Ashkelon,
lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.
[21] You mountains of Gilboa,
let there be no dew or rain on you, and no fields of offerings;
for there the shield of the mighty was defiled and cast away,
the shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.
[22] From the blood of the slain,
from the fat of the mighty,
Jonathan’s bow didn’t turn back.
Saul’s sword didn’t return empty.
[23] Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives.
In their death, they were not divided.
They were swifter than eagles.
They were stronger than lions.
[24] You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
who clothed you delicately in scarlet,
who put ornaments of gold on your clothing.
[25] How the mighty have fallen in the middle of the battle!
Jonathan was slain on your high places.
[26] I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan.
You have been very pleasant to me.
Your love to me was wonderful,
surpassing the love of women.
[27] How the mighty have fallen,
and the weapons of war have perished!”
[19] “Your glory, Israel, was slain on your high places!

King James Version
[1] Now it came to pass after H310 the death H4194 of Saul, H7586 when David H1732 was returned H7725 (QalPerf) from the slaughter H5221 (HiphInf) of the Amalekites, H6002 and David H1732 had abode H3427 (QalImpf) two H8147 days H3117 in Ziklag; H6860 [2] it came even to pass on the third H7992 day, H3117 that, behold, a man H376 came H935 (QalActPtc) out of the camp H4264 from Saul H7586 with his clothes H899 rent, H7167 (QalPasPtc) and earth H127 upon his head: H7218 and so it was, when he came H935 (QalInf) to David, H1732 that he fell H5307 (QalImpf) to the earth, H776 and did obeisance. H7812 (HithImpf) [3] And David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, From whence comest H935 (QalImpf) thou? And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Out of the camp H4264 of Israel H3478 am I escaped. H4422 (NiphPerf) [4] And David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, How H4100 went§ the matter? H1697 I pray thee, tell H5046 (HiphImpv) me. And he answered, H559 (QalImpf) That the people H5971 are fled H5127 (QalPerf) from the battle, H4421 and many H7235 (HiphInf) of the people H5971 also are fallen H5307 (QalPerf) and dead; H4191 (QalImpf) and Saul H7586 and Jonathan H3083 his son H1121 are dead H4191 (QalPerf) also. [5] And David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the young man H5288 that told H5046 (HiphPtc) him, How knowest H3045 (QalPerf) thou that Saul H7586 and Jonathan H3083 his son H1121 be dead? H4191 (QalPerf) [6] And the young man H5288 that told H5046 (HiphPtc) him said, H559 (QalImpf) As I happened H7136 (NiphPerf) by chance H7122 (NiphInf) upon mount H2022 Gilboa, H1533 behold, Saul H7586 leaned H8172 (NiphPtc) upon his spear; H2595 and, lo, the chariots H7393 and horsemen H1167 followed hard H1692 (HiphPerf) after him. [7] And when he looked H6437 (QalImpf) behind H310 him, he saw H7200 (QalImpf) me, and called H7121 (QalImpf) unto me. And I answered, H559 (QalImpf) Here am I.§ [8] And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto me, Who art thou? And I answered H559 (QalImpf) him, I am an Amalekite. H6003 [9] He said H559 (QalImpf) unto me again, Stand, H5975 (QalImpv) I pray thee, upon me, and slay H4191 (PoleImpv) me: for anguish H7661 is come H270 (QalPerf) upon me,§ because my life H5315 is yet whole in me. [10] So I stood H5975 (QalImpf) upon him, and slew H4191 (PoleImpf) him, because I was sure H3045 (QalPerf) that he could not live H2421 (QalImpf) after H310 that he was fallen: H5307 (QalInf) and I took H3947 (QalImpf) the crown H5145 that was upon his head, H7218 and the bracelet H685 that was on his arm, H2220 and have brought H935 (HiphImpf) them hither unto my lord. H113 [11] Then David H1732 took hold H2388 (HiphImpf) on his clothes, H899 and rent H7167 (QalImpf) them; and likewise all the men H582 that were with him: [12] and they mourned, H5594 (QalImpf) and wept, H1058 (QalImpf) and fasted H6684 (QalImpf) until even, H6153 for Saul, H7586 and for Jonathan H3083 his son, H1121 and for the people H5971 of the Lord, H3068 and for the house H1004 of Israel; H3478 because they were fallen H5307 (QalPerf) by the sword. H2719 [13] And David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the young man H5288 that told H5046 (HiphPtc) him, Whence art thou? And he answered, H559 (QalImpf) I am the son H1121 of a stranger, H376 an Amalekite. H6003 [14] And David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, How wast thou not afraid H3372 (QalPerf) to stretch forth H7971 (QalInf) thine hand H3027 to destroy H7843 (PielInf) the Lord’s H3068 anointed? H4899 [15] And David H1732 called H7121 (QalImpf) one H259 of the young men, H5288 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Go near, H5066 (QalImpv) and fall H6293 (QalImpv) upon him. And he smote H5221 (HiphImpf) him that he died. H4191 (QalImpf) [16] And David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Thy blood H1818 be upon thy head; H7218 for thy mouth H6310 hath testified H6030 (QalPerf) against thee, saying, H559 (QalInf) I have slain H4191 (PolePerf) the Lord’s H3068 anointed.
