[1] Yahweh sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, “There were two men in one city: the one rich, and the other poor. [2] The rich man had very many flocks and herds, [3] but the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up together with him and with his children. It ate of his own food, drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was like a daughter to him. [4] A traveler came to the rich man, and he didn’t want to take of his own flock and of his own herd to prepare for the wayfaring man who had come to him, but took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” [5] David’s anger burned hot against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As Yahweh lives, the man who has done this deserves to die! [6] He must restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing and because he had no pity!” [7] Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. [8] I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things. [9] Why have you despised Yahweh’s word, to do that which is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword, have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. [10] Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken Uriah the Hittite’s wife to be your wife.’ [11] “This is what Yahweh says: ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. [12] For you did this secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.’ ” [13] David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against Yahweh.”Nathan said to David, “Yahweh also has put away your sin. You will not die. [14] However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to Yahweh’s enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you will surely die.” [15] Then Nathan departed to his house.Yahweh struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and he was very sick. [16] David therefore begged God for the child; and David fasted, and went in and lay all night on the ground. [17] The elders of his house arose beside him, to raise him up from the earth; but he would not, and he didn’t eat bread with them. [18] On the seventh day, the child died. David’s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him and he didn’t listen to our voice. How will he then harm himself if we tell him that the child is dead?” [19] But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?”They said, “He is dead.” [20] Then David arose from the earth, and washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothing; and he came into Yahweh’s house, and worshiped. Then he came to his own house; and when he requested, they set bread before him and he ate. [21] Then his servants said to him, “What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child was dead, you rose up and ate bread.” [22] He said, “While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows whether Yahweh will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ [23] But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.” [24] David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her. She bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Yahweh loved him; [25] and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he named him Jedidiah, for Yahweh’s sake. [26] Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city. [27] Joab sent messengers to David, and said, “I have fought against Rabbah. Yes, I have taken the city of waters. [28] Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called by my name.” [29] David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah, and fought against it and took it. [30] He took the crown of their king from off his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and in it were precious stones; and it was set on David’s head. He brought a great quantity of plunder out of the city. [31] He brought out the people who were in it, and put them to work under saws, under iron picks, under axes of iron, and made them go to the brick kiln; and he did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

[1] And the LordH3068 sentH7971(QalImpf) NathanH5416 unto David.H1732 And he cameH935(QalImpf) unto him, and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, There were twoH8147 menH582 in oneH259 city;H5892 the oneH259 rich,H6223 and the otherH259 poor.H7326(QalActPtc) [2] The richH6223 [man] had exceedingH3966 manyH7235(HiphInf) flocksH6629 and herds:H1241 [3] But the poorH7326(QalActPtc) [man] had nothing, save oneH259 littleH6996 ewe lamb,H3535 which he had boughtH7069(QalPerf) and nourished up:H2421(PielImpf) and it grew upH1431(QalImpf) togetherH3162 with him, and with his children;H1121 it did eatH398(QalImpf) of his own meat,H6595 and drankH8354(QalImpf) of his own cup,H3563 and layH7901(QalImpf) in his bosom,H2436 and was unto him as a daughter.H1323 [4] And there cameH935(QalImpf) a travellerH1982 unto the richH6223 man,H376 and he sparedH2550(QalImpf) to takeH3947(QalInf) of his own flockH6629 and of his own herd,H1241 to dressH6213(QalInf) for the wayfaring manH732(QalActPtc) that was comeH935(QalActPtc) unto him; but tookH3947(QalImpf) the poorH7326(QalActPtc) man’sH376 lamb,H3535 and dressedH6213(QalImpf) it for the manH376 that was comeH935(QalActPtc) to him. [5] And David’sH1732 angerH639 was greatlyH3966 kindledH2734(QalImpf) against the man;H376 and he saidH559(QalImpf) to Nathan,H5416 [As] the LordH3068 liveth,H2416 the manH376 that hath doneH6213(QalActPtc) this [thing] shall surelyH1121 die:H4194 [6] And he shall restoreH7999(PielImpf) the lambH3535 fourfold,H706 becauseH6118 he didH6213(QalPerf) this thing,H1697 and becauseH834 he had no pity.H2550(QalPerf) [7] And NathanH5416 saidH559(QalImpf) to David,H1732 Thou [art] the man.H376 Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH3068 GodH430 of Israel,H3478 I anointedH4886(QalPerf) thee kingH4428 over Israel,H3478 and I deliveredH5337(HiphPerf) thee out of the handH3027 of Saul;H7586 [8] And I gaveH5414(QalImpf) thee thy master’sH113 house,H1004 and thy master’sH113 wivesH802 into thy bosom,H2436 and gaveH5414(QalImpf) thee the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 and of Judah;H3063 and if [that had been] too little,H4592 I would moreover have givenH3254(HiphImpf) unto thee suchH2007 and such things.H2007 [9] Wherefore hast thou despisedH959(QalPerf) the commandmentH1697 of the Lord,H3068 to doH6213(QalInf) evilH7451 in his sight?H5869 thou hast killedH5221(HiphPerf) UriahH223 the HittiteH2850 with the sword,H2719 and hast takenH3947(QalPerf) his wifeH802 [to be] thy wife,H802 and hast slainH2026(QalPerf) him with the swordH2719 of the childrenH1121 of Ammon.H5983 [10] Now therefore the swordH2719 shall neverH5704 departH5493(QalImpf) from thine house;H1004 becauseH6118 thou hast despisedH959(QalPerf) me, and hast takenH3947(QalImpf) the wifeH802 of UriahH223 the HittiteH2850 to be thy wife.H802 [11] Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 Behold, I will raise upH6965(HiphPtc) evilH7451 against thee out of thine own house,H1004 and I will takeH3947(QalPerf) thy wivesH802 before thine eyes,H5869 and giveH5414(QalPerf) [them] unto thy neighbour,H7453 and he shall lieH7901(QalPerf) with thy wivesH802 in the sightH5869 of this sun.H8121 [12] For thou didstH6213(QalPerf) [it] secretly:H5643 but I will doH6213(QalImpf) this thingH1697 before all Israel,H3478 and before the sun.H8121 [13] And DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Nathan,H5416 I have sinnedH2398(QalPerf) against the Lord.H3068 And NathanH5416 saidH559(QalImpf) unto David,H1732 The LordH3068 also hath put awayH5674(HiphPerf) thy sin;H2403 thou shalt not die.H4191(QalImpf) [14] Howbeit,H657 because by this deedH1697 thou hast givenH5006 great occasionH5006(PielInf) to the enemiesH341(QalActPtc) of the LordH3068 to blaspheme,H5006(PielPerf) the childH1121 also [that is] bornH3209 unto thee shall surelyH4191(QalInf) die.H4191(QalImpf) [15] And NathanH5416 departedH3212(QalImpf) unto his house.H1004 And the LordH3068 struckH5062(QalImpf) the childH3206 that Uriah’sH223 wifeH802 bareH3205(QalPerf) unto David,H1732 and it was very sick.H605(NiphImpf) [16] DavidH1732 therefore besoughtH1245(PielImpf) GodH430 for the child;H5288 and DavidH1732 fasted,H6684(QalImpf) and went in,H935(QalPerf) and layH7901(QalPerf) all nightH3885(QalPerf) upon the earth.H776 [17] And the eldersH2205 of his houseH1004 arose,H6965(QalImpf) [and went] to him, to raise him upH6965(HiphInf) from the earth:H776 but he wouldH14(QalPerf) not, neither did he eatH1262(QalPerf) breadH3899 with them. [18] And it came to pass on the seventhH7637 day,H3117 that the childH3206 died.H4191(QalImpf) And the servantsH5650 of DavidH1732 fearedH3372(QalImpf) to tellH5046(HiphInf) him that the childH3206 was dead:H4191(QalPerf) for they said,H559(QalPerf) Behold, while the childH3206 was yet alive,H2416 we spakeH1696(PielPerf) unto him, and he would not hearkenH8085(QalPerf) unto our voice:H6963 how will he thenH6213 vexH7451 himself,H6213(QalPerf) if we tellH559(QalImpf) him that the childH3206 is dead?H4191(QalPerf) [19] But when DavidH1732 sawH7200(QalImpf) that his servantsH5650 whispered,H3907(HithPtc) DavidH1732 perceivedH995(QalImpf) that the childH3206 was dead:H4191(QalPerf) therefore DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his servants,H5650 Is the childH3206 dead?H4191(QalPerf) And they said,H559(QalImpf) He is dead.H4191(QalPerf) [20] Then DavidH1732 aroseH6965(QalImpf) from the earth,H776 and washed,H7364(QalImpf) and anointedH5480(HiphImpf) [himself], and changedH2498(PielImpf) his apparel,H8071 and cameH935(QalImpf) into the houseH1004 of the Lord,H3068 and worshipped:H7812(HithImpf) then he cameH935(QalImpf) to his own house;H1004 and when he required,H7592(QalImpf) they setH7760(QalImpf) breadH3899 before him, and he did eat.H398(QalImpf) [21] Then saidH559(QalImpf) his servantsH5650 unto him, What thingH1697 [is] this that thou hast done?H6213(QalPerf) thou didst fastH6684(QalPerf) and weepH1058(QalImpf) for the child,H3206 [while it was] alive;H2416 but when the childH3206 was dead,H4191(QalPerf) thou didst riseH6965(QalPerf) and eatH398(QalImpf) bread.H3899 [22] And he said,H559(QalImpf) While the childH3206 was yet alive,H2416 I fastedH6684(QalPerf) and wept:H1058(QalImpf) for I said,H559(QalPerf) Who can tellH3045(QalActPtc) [whether] GodH3068 will be graciousH2603(QalPerf/Qere) to me, that the childH3206 may live?H2416 [23] But now he is dead,H4191(QalPerf) wherefore should I fast?H6684(QalActPtc) canH3201(QalImpf) I bring him back again?H7725(HiphInf) I shall goH1980(QalActPtc) to him, but he shall not returnH7725(QalImpf) to me. [24] And DavidH1732 comfortedH5162(PielImpf) BathshebaH1339 his wife,H802 and went inH935(QalImpf) unto her, and layH7901(QalImpf) with her: and she bareH3205(QalImpf) a son,H1121 and he calledH7121(QalImpf) his nameH8034 Solomon:H8010 and the LordH3068 lovedH157(QalPerf) him. [25] And he sentH7971(QalImpf) by the handH3027 of NathanH5416 the prophet;H5030 and he calledH7121(QalImpf) his nameH8034 Jedidiah,H3041 because of the Lord.H3068 [26] And JoabH3097 foughtH3898(NiphImpf) against RabbahH7237 of the childrenH1121 of Ammon,H5983 and tookH3920(QalImpf) the royalH4410 city.H5892 [27] And JoabH3097 sentH7971(QalImpf) messengersH4397 to David,H1732 and said,H559(QalImpf) I have foughtH3898(NiphPerf) against Rabbah,H7237 and have takenH3920(QalPerf) the cityH5892 of waters.H4325 [28] Now therefore gatherH622 the restH3499 of the peopleH5971 together,H622(QalImpv) and encampH2583(QalImpv) against the city,H5892 and takeH3920(QalImpv) it: lest I takeH3920(QalImpf) the city,H5892 and it be calledH7121(NiphPerf) after my name.H8034 [29] And DavidH1732 gatheredH622 all the peopleH5971 together,H622(QalImpf) and wentH3212(QalImpf) to Rabbah,H7237 and foughtH3898(NiphImpf) against it, and tookH3920(QalImpf) it. [30] And he tookH3947(QalImpf) their king’sH4428 crownH5850 from off his head,H7218 the weightH4948 whereof [was] a talentH3603 of goldH2091 with the preciousH3368 stones:H68 and it was [set] on David’sH1732 head.H7218 And he brought forthH3318(HiphPerf) the spoilH7998 of the cityH5892 in greatH3966 abundance.H7235(HiphInf) [31] And he brought forthH3318(HiphPerf) the peopleH5971 that [were] therein, and putH7760(QalImpf) [them] under saws,H4050 and under harrowsH2757 of iron,H1270 and under axesH4037 of iron,H1270 and made them passH5674(HiphPerf) through the brickkiln:H4404 and thus didH6213(QalImpf) he unto all the citiesH5892 of the childrenH1121 of Ammon.H5983 So DavidH1732 and all the peopleH5971 returnedH7725(QalImpf) unto Jerusalem.H3389
