[1] After this, the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. [2] David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon. [3] But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Hasn’t David sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?” [4] So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away. [5] When they told David this, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.” [6] When the children of Ammon saw that they had become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with one thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men. [7] When David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men. [8] The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate. The Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the field. [9] Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel and put them in array against the Syrians. [10] The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon. [11] He said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. [12] Be courageous, and let’s be strong for our people and for the cities of our God; and may Yahweh do what seems good to him.” [13] So Joab and the people who were with him came near to the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. [14] When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon and came to Jerusalem. [15] When the Syrians saw that they were defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together. [16] Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River; and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head. [17] David was told that; and he gathered all Israel together, passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. The Syrians set themselves in array against David and fought with him. [18] The Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven hundred charioteers of the Syrians and forty thousand horsemen, and struck Shobach the captain of their army, so that he died there. [19] When all the kings who were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Syrians were afraid to help the children of Ammon any more.
King James Version
[1] And it came to pass after this,H310 that the kingH4428 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 died,H4191(QalImpf) and HanunH2586 his sonH1121 reignedH4427(QalImpf) in his stead. [2] Then saidH559(QalImpf) David,H1732 I will shewH6213(QalImpf) kindnessH2617 unto HanunH2586 the sonH1121 of Nahash,H5176 as his fatherH1 shewedH6213(QalPerf) kindnessH2617 unto me. And DavidH1732 sentH7971(QalImpf) to comfortH5162(PielInf) him by the handH3027 of his servantsH5650 for his father.H1 And David’sH1732 servantsH5650 cameH935(QalImpf) into the landH776 of the childrenH1121 of Ammon.H5983 [3] And the princesH8269 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 saidH559(QalImpf) unto HanunH2586 their lord,H113 ThinkestH5869 thou that DavidH1732 doth honourH3513(PielPtc) thy father,H1 that he hath sentH7971(QalPerf) comfortersH5162(PielPtc) unto thee? hath not DavidH1732 [rather] sentH7971(QalPerf) his servantsH5650 unto thee, toH5668 searchH2713(QalInf) the city,H5892 and to spy it out,H7270(PielInf) and to overthrowH2015(QalInf) it? [4] Wherefore HanunH2586 tookH3947(QalImpf) David’sH1732 servants,H5650 and shaved offH1548(PielImpf) the one halfH2677 of their beards,H2206 and cut offH3772(QalImpf) their garmentsH4063 in the middle,H2677 [even] to their buttocks,H8357 and sent them away.H7971(PielImpf) [5] When they toldH5046(HiphImpf) [it] unto David,H1732 he sentH7971(QalImpf) to meetH7125(QalInf) them, because the menH582 were greatlyH3966 ashamed:H3637(NiphPtc) and the kingH4428 said,H559(QalImpf) TarryH3427(QalImpv) at JerichoH3405 until your beardsH2206 be grown,H6779(PielImpf) and [then] return.H7725(QalPerf) [6] And when the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 sawH7200(QalImpf) that they stankH887(NiphPerf) before David,H1732 the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 sentH7971(QalImpf) and hiredH7936(QalImpf) the SyriansH758 of Bethrehob,H1050 and the SyriansH758 of Zoba,H6678 twentyH6242 thousandH505 footmen,H7273 and of kingH4428 MaacahH4601 a thousandH505 men,H376 and of IshtobH382 twelveH6240 thousandH505 men.H376 [7] And when DavidH1732 heardH8085(QalImpf) of [it], he sentH7971(QalImpf) Joab,H3097 and all the hostH6635 of the mighty men.H1368 [8] And the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 came out,H3318(QalImpf) and put the battleH4421 in arrayH6186(QalImpf) at the entering inH6607 of the gate:H8179 and the SyriansH758 of Zoba,H6678 and of Rehob,H7340 and Ishtob,H382 and Maacah,H4601 [were] by themselvesH905 in the field.H7704 [9] When JoabH3097 sawH7200(QalImpf) that the frontH6440 of the battleH4421 was against him beforeH6440 and behind,H268 he choseH977(QalImpf) of all the choiceH977(QalPasPtc) [men] of Israel,H3478 and put [them] in arrayH6186(QalImpf) againstH7125(QalInf) the Syrians:H758 [10] And the restH3499 of the peopleH5971 he deliveredH5414(QalPerf) into the handH3027 of AbishaiH52 his brother,H251 that he might put [them] in arrayH6186(QalImpf) againstH7125(QalInf) the childrenH1121 of Ammon.H5983 [11] And he said,H559(QalImpf) If the SyriansH758 be too strongH2388(QalImpf) for me, then thou shalt helpH3444 me: but if the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 be too strongH2388(QalImpf) for thee, then I will comeH1980(QalPerf) and helpH3467(HiphInf) thee. [12] Be of good courage,H2388(QalImpv) and let us play the menH2388(HithImpf) for our people,H5971 and for the citiesH5892 of our God:H430 and the LordH3068 doH6213(QalImpf) that which seemethH5869 him good.H2896 [13] And JoabH3097 drew nigh,H5066(QalImpf) and the peopleH5971 that [were] with him, unto the battleH4421 against the Syrians:H758 and they fledH5127(QalImpf) beforeH6440 him. [14] And when the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 sawH7200(QalPerf) that the SyriansH758 were fled,H5127(QalPerf) then fledH5127(QalImpf) they also beforeH6440 Abishai,H52 and enteredH935(QalImpf) into the city.H5892 So JoabH3097 returnedH7725(QalImpf) from the childrenH1121 of Ammon,H5983 and cameH935(QalImpf) to Jerusalem.H3389 [15] And when the SyriansH758 sawH7200(QalImpf) that they were smittenH5062(NiphPerf) beforeH6440 Israel,H3478 they gatheredH622(NiphImpf) themselves together.H3162 [16] And HadarezerH1928 sent,H7971(QalImpf) and brought outH3318(HiphImpf) the SyriansH758 that [were] beyondH5676 the river:H5104 and they cameH935(QalImpf) to Helam;H2431 and ShobachH7731 the captainH8269 of the hostH6635 of HadarezerH1928 [went] beforeH6440 them. [17] And when it was toldH5046(HophImpf) David,H1732 he gatheredH622 all IsraelH3478 together,H622(QalImpf) and passed overH5674(QalImpf) Jordan,H3383 and cameH935(QalImpf) to Helam.H2431 And the SyriansH758 set themselves in arrayH6186(QalImpf) againstH7125(QalInf) David,H1732 and foughtH3898(NiphImpf) with him. [18] And the SyriansH758 fledH5127(QalImpf) beforeH6440 Israel;H3478 and DavidH1732 slewH2026(QalImpf) [the men of] sevenH7651 hundredH3967 chariotsH7393 of the Syrians,H758 and fortyH705 thousandH505 horsemen,H6571 and smoteH5221(HiphPerf) ShobachH7731 the captainH8269 of their host,H6635 who diedH4191(QalImpf) there. [19] And when all the kingsH4428 [that were] servantsH5650 to HadarezerH1928 sawH7200(QalImpf) that they were smittenH5062(NiphPerf) beforeH6440 Israel,H3478 they made peaceH7999(HiphImpf) with Israel,H3478 and servedH5647(QalImpf) them. So the SyriansH758 fearedH3372(QalImpf) to helpH3467(HiphInf) the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 any more.
