[1] After this, Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her. [2] Amnon was so troubled that he became sick because of his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed hard to Amnon to do anything to her. [3] But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David’s brother; and Jonadab was a very subtle man. [4] He said to him, “Why, son of the king, are you so sad from day to day? Won’t you tell me?”Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.” [5] Jonadab said to him, “Lay down on your bed and pretend to be sick. When your father comes to see you, tell him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’ ” [6] So Amnon lay down and faked being sick. When the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.” [7] Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go now to your brother Amnon’s house, and prepare food for him.” [8] So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was lying down. She took dough, kneaded it, made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes. [9] She took the pan and poured them out before him, but he refused to eat. Amnon said, “Have all men leave me.” Then every man went out from him. [10] Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the room, that I may eat from your hand.” Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the room to Amnon her brother. [11] When she had brought them near to him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister!” [12] She answered him, “No, my brother, do not force me! For no such thing ought to be done in Israel. Don’t you do this folly! [13] As for me, where would I carry my shame? And as for you, you will be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king; for he will not withhold me from you.” [14] However, he would not listen to her voice; but being stronger than she, he forced her and lay with her. [15] Then Amnon hated her with exceedingly great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. Amnon said to her, “Arise, be gone!” [16] She said to him, “Not so, because this great wrong in sending me away is worse than the other that you did to me!”But he would not listen to her. [17] Then he called his servant who ministered to him, and said, “Now put this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.” [18] She had a garment of various colors on her, for the king’s daughters who were virgins dressed in such robes. Then his servant brought her out and bolted the door after her. [19] Tamar put ashes on her head, and tore her garment of various colors that was on her; and she laid her hand on her head and went her way, crying aloud as she went. [20] Absalom her brother said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? But now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother. Don’t take this thing to heart.”So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house. [21] But when King David heard of all these things, he was very angry. [22] Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar. [23] After two full years, Absalom had sheep shearers in Baal Hazor, which is beside Ephraim; and Absalom invited all the king’s sons. [24] Absalom came to the king and said, “See now, your servant has sheep shearers. Please let the king and his servants go with your servant.” [25] The king said to Absalom, “No, my son, let’s not all go, lest we be burdensome to you.” He pressed him; however he would not go, but blessed him. [26] Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us.”The king said to him, “Why should he go with you?” [27] But Absalom pressed him, and he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him. [28] Absalom commanded his servants, saying, “Mark now, when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine; and when I tell you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Haven’t I commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant!” [29] The servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and every man got up on his mule and fled. [30] While they were on the way, the news came to David, saying, “Absalom has slain all the king’s sons, and there is not one of them left!” [31] Then the king arose, and tore his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes torn. [32] Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, answered, “Don’t let my lord suppose that they have killed all the young men, the king’s sons, for Amnon only is dead; for by the appointment of Absalom this has been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar. [33] Now therefore don’t let my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king’s sons are dead; for only Amnon is dead.” [34] But Absalom fled. The young man who kept the watch lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, many people were coming by way of the hillside behind him. [35] Jonadab said to the king, “Behold, the king’s sons are coming! It is as your servant said.” [36] As soon as he had finished speaking, behold, the king’s sons came, and lifted up their voices and wept. The king also and all his servants wept bitterly. [37] But Absalom fled and went to Talmai the son of Ammihur, king of Geshur. David mourned for his son every day. [38] So Absalom fled and went to Geshur, and was there three years. [39] King David longed to go out to Absalom, for he was comforted concerning Amnon, since he was dead.
King James Version
[1] And it came to pass afterH310 this, that AbsalomH53 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732 had a fairH3303 sister,H269 whose nameH8034 [was] Tamar;H8559 and AmnonH550 the sonH1121 of DavidH1732 lovedH157(QalImpf) her. [2] And AmnonH550 was so vexed,H3334(QalImpf) that he fell sickH2470(HithInf) for his sisterH269 Tamar;H8559 for she [was] a virgin;H1330 and AmnonH550 thoughtH5869 it hardH6381(NiphImpf) for him to doH6213(QalInf) any thingH3972 to her. [3] But AmnonH550 had a friend,H7453 whose nameH8034 [was] Jonadab,H3122 the sonH1121 of ShimeahH8093 David’sH1732 brother:H251 and JonadabH3122 [was] a veryH3966 subtilH2450 man.H376 [4] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Why [art] thou, [being] the king’sH4428 son,H1121 leanH1800 from dayH1242 to day?H1242 wilt thou not tellH5046(HiphImpf) me? And AmnonH550 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, I loveH157(QalActPtc) Tamar,H8559 my brotherH251 Absalom’sH53 sister.H269 [5] And JonadabH3082 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Lay thee downH7901(QalImpv) on thy bed,H4904 and make thyself sick:H2470(HithImpv) and when thy fatherH1 comethH935(QalPerf) to seeH7200(QalInf) thee, sayH559(QalPerf) unto him, I pray thee, let my sisterH269 TamarH8559 come,H935(QalImpf) and giveH1262(HiphImpf) me meat,H3899 and dressH6213(QalPerf) the meatH1279 in my sight,H5869 that I may seeH7200(QalImpf) [it], and eatH398(QalPerf) [it] at her hand.H3027 [6] So AmnonH550 lay down,H7901(QalImpf) and made himself sick:H2470(HithImpf) and when the kingH4428 was comeH935(QalImpf) to seeH7200(QalInf) him, AmnonH550 saidH559(QalImpf) unto the king,H4428 I pray thee, let TamarH8559 my sisterH269 come,H935(QalImpf) and makeH3823(PielImpf) me a coupleH8147 of cakesH3834 in my sight,H5869 that I may eatH1262(QalImpf) at her hand.H3027 [7] Then DavidH1732 sentH7971(QalImpf) homeH1004 to Tamar,H8559 saying,H559(QalInf) GoH3212(QalImpv) now to thy brotherH251 Amnon’sH550 house,H1004 and dressH6213(QalImpv) him meat.H1279 [8] So TamarH8559 wentH3212(QalImpf) to her brotherH251 Amnon’sH550 house;H1004 and he was laid down.H7901(QalActPtc) And she tookH3947(QalImpf) flour,H1217 and kneadedH3888(QalImpf) [it], and made cakesH3823(PielImpf) in his sight,H5869 and did bakeH1310(PielImpf) the cakes.H3834 [9] And she tookH3947(QalImpf) a pan,H4958 and poured [them] outH3332(QalImpf) beforeH6440 him; but he refusedH3985(PielImpf) to eat.H398(QalInf) And AmnonH550 said,H559(QalImpf) Have outH3318(HiphImpv) all menH376 from me. And they went outH3318(QalImpf) every manH376 from him. [10] And AmnonH550 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Tamar,H8559 BringH935(HiphImpv) the meatH1279 into the chamber,H2315 that I may eatH1262(QalImpf) of thine hand.H3027 And TamarH8559 tookH3947(QalImpf) the cakesH3834 which she had made,H6213(QalPerf) and broughtH935(HiphImpf) [them] into the chamberH2315 to AmnonH550 her brother.H251 [11] And when she had broughtH5066(HiphImpf) [them] unto him to eat,H398(QalInf) he took holdH2388(HiphImpf) of her, and saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, ComeH935(QalImpv) lieH7901(QalImpv) with me, my sister.H269 [12] And she answeredH559(QalImpf) him, Nay, my brother,H251 do not forceH6031(PielImpf) me; for no such thing oughtH3651 to be doneH6213(NiphImpf) in Israel:H3478 doH6213(QalImpf) not thou this folly.H5039 [13] And I, whither shall I cause my shameH2781 to go?H3212(HiphImpf) and as for thee, thou shalt be as oneH259 of the foolsH5036 in Israel.H3478 Now therefore, I pray thee, speakH1696(PielImpv) unto the king;H4428 for he will not withholdH4513(QalImpf) me from thee. [14] Howbeit he wouldH14(QalPerf) not hearkenH8085(QalInf) unto her voice:H6963 but, being strongerH2388(QalImpf) than she, forcedH6031(PielImpf) her, and layH7901(QalImpf) with her. [15] Then AmnonH550 hatedH8130(QalImpf) her exceedingly;H3966 so that the hatredH8135 wherewith he hatedH8130(QalPerf) her [was] greaterH1419 than the loveH160 wherewith he had lovedH157(QalPerf) her. And AmnonH550 saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, Arise,H6965(QalImpv) be gone.H3212(QalImpv) [16] And she saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, [There is] no cause:H182 this evilH7451 in sending me awayH7971(PielInf) [is] greaterH1419 than the otherH312 that thou didstH6213(QalPerf) unto me. But he wouldH14(QalPerf) not hearkenH8085(QalInf) unto her. [17] Then he calledH7121(QalImpf) his servantH5288 that ministeredH8334(PielPtc) unto him, and said,H559(QalImpf) PutH7971(QalImpv) now this [woman] outH2351 from me, and boltH5274(QalImpv) the doorH1817 afterH310 her. [18] And [she had] a garmentH3801 of divers coloursH6446 upon her: for with such robesH4598 were the king’sH4428 daughtersH1323 [that were] virginsH1330 apparelled.H3847(QalImpf) Then his servantH8334(PielPtc) broughtH3318(HiphImpf) her out,H2351 and boltedH5274(QalPerf) the doorH1817 afterH310 her. [19] And TamarH8559 putH3947(QalImpf) ashesH665 on her head,H7218 and rentH7167(QalPerf) her garmentH3801 of divers coloursH6446 that [was] on her, and laidH7760(QalImpf) her handH3027 on her head,H7218 and wentH3212(QalImpf) onH1980(QalInf) crying.H2199(QalPerf) [20] And AbsalomH53 her brotherH251 saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, Hath AmnonH550 thy brotherH251 been with thee? but hold now thy peace,H2790(HiphImpv) my sister:H269 he [is] thy brother;H251 regardH7896(QalImpf) not this thing.H1697 So TamarH8559 remainedH3427(QalImpf) desolateH8074(QalActPtc) in her brotherH251 Absalom’sH53 house.H1004 [21] But when kingH4428 DavidH1732 heardH8085(QalPerf) of all these things,H1697 he was veryH3966 wroth.H2734(QalImpf) [22] And AbsalomH53 spakeH1696(PielPerf) unto his brother AmnonH550 neither goodH2896 nor bad:H7451 for AbsalomH53 hatedH8130(QalPerf) Amnon,H550 becauseH1697 he had forcedH6031(PielPerf) his sisterH269 Tamar.H8559 [23] And it came to pass after two fullH3117 years,H8141 that AbsalomH53 had sheepshearersH1494(QalActPtc) in Baalhazor,H1178 which [is] beside Ephraim:H669 and AbsalomH53 invitedH7121(QalImpf) all the king’sH4428 sons.H1121 [24] And AbsalomH53 cameH935(QalImpf) to the king,H4428 and said,H559(QalImpf) Behold now, thy servantH5650 hath sheepshearers;H1494(QalActPtc) letH3212 the king,H4428 I beseech thee, and his servantsH5650 goH3212(QalImpf) with thy servant.H5650 [25] And the kingH4428 saidH559(QalImpf) to Absalom,H53 Nay, my son,H1121 let us not all now go,H3212(QalImpf) lest we be chargeableH3513(QalImpf) unto thee. And he pressedH6555(QalImpf) him: howbeit he wouldH14(QalPerf) not go,H3212(QalInf) but blessedH1288(PielImpf) him. [26] Then saidH559(QalImpf) Absalom,H53 If not, I pray thee, let my brotherH251 AmnonH550 goH3212(QalImpf) with us. And the kingH4428 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Why should he goH3212(QalImpf) with thee? [27] But AbsalomH53 pressedH6555(QalImpf) him, that he let AmnonH550 and all the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 goH7971(QalImpf) with him. [28] Now AbsalomH53 had commandedH6680(PielImpf) his servants,H5288 saying,H559(QalInf) MarkH7200(QalImpv) ye now when Amnon’sH550 heartH3820 is merryH2896 with wine,H3196 and when I sayH559(QalPerf) unto you, SmiteH5221(HiphImpv) Amnon;H550 then killH4191(HiphPerf) him, fearH3372(QalImpf) not: have not I commandedH6680(PielPerf) you? be courageous,H2388(QalImpv) and be valiant.H1121 [29] And the servantsH5288 of AbsalomH53 didH6213(QalImpf) unto AmnonH550 as AbsalomH53 had commanded.H6680(PielPerf) Then all the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 arose,H6965(QalImpf) and every manH376 gat him upH7392(QalImpf) upon his mule,H6505 and fled.H5127(QalImpf) [30] And it came to pass, while they were in the way,H1870 that tidingsH8052 cameH935(QalPerf) to David,H1732 saying,H559(QalInf) AbsalomH53 hath slainH5221(HiphPerf) all the king’sH4428 sons,H1121 and there is not oneH259 of them left.H3498(NiphPerf) [31] Then the kingH4428 arose,H6965(QalImpf) and tareH7167(QalImpf) his garments,H899 and layH7901(QalImpf) on the earth;H776 and all his servantsH5650 stoodH5324(NiphPtc) by with their clothesH899 rent.H7167(QalPasPtc) [32] And Jonadab,H3122 the sonH1121 of ShimeahH8093 David’sH1732 brother,H251 answeredH6030(QalImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) Let not my lordH113 supposeH559(QalImpf) [that] they have slainH4191(HiphPerf) all the young menH5288 the king’sH4428 sons;H1121 for AmnonH550 only is dead:H4191(QalPerf) for by the appointmentH6310 of AbsalomH53 this hath been determinedH7760(QalPasPtc) from the dayH3117 that he forcedH6031(PielInf) his sisterH269 Tamar.H8559 [33] Now therefore let not my lordH113 the kingH4428 takeH7760(QalImpf) the thingH1697 to his heart,H3820 to thinkH559(QalInf) that all the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 are dead:H4191(QalPerf) for AmnonH550 only is dead.H4191(QalPerf) [34] But AbsalomH53 fled.H1272(QalImpf) And the young manH5288 that kept the watchH6822(QalActPtc) lifted upH5375(QalImpf) his eyes,H5869 and looked,H7200(QalImpf) and, behold, there cameH1980(QalActPtc) muchH7227 peopleH5971 by the wayH1870 of the hillH2022 sideH6654 behindH310 him. [35] And JonadabH3122 saidH559(QalImpf) unto the king,H4428 Behold, the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 come:H935(QalPerf) as thy servantH5650 said,H1697 so it is. [36] And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an endH3615(PielInf) of speaking,H1696(PielInf) that, behold, the king’sH4428 sonsH1121 came,H935(QalPerf) and lifted upH5375(QalImpf) their voiceH6963 and wept:H1058(QalImpf) and the kingH4428 also and all his servantsH5650 weptH1058(QalPerf) veryH3966 sore.H1065 [37] But AbsalomH53 fled,H1272(QalPerf) and wentH3212(QalImpf) to Talmai,H8526 the sonH1121 of Ammihud,H5991(Qere) kingH4428 of Geshur.H1650 And [David] mournedH56(HithImpf) for his sonH1121 every day.H3117 [38] So AbsalomH53 fled,H1272(QalPerf) and wentH3212(QalImpf) to Geshur,H1650 and was there threeH7969 years.H8141 [39] And [the soul of] kingH4428 DavidH1732 longedH3615(PielImpf) to go forthH3318(QalInf) unto Absalom:H53 for he was comfortedH5162(NiphPerf) concerning Amnon,H550 seeing he was dead.H4191(QalPerf)
