[1] Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and spoke, saying, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh. [2] In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led Israel out and in. Yahweh said to you, ‘You will be shepherd of my people Israel, and you will be prince over Israel.’ ” [3] So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Yahweh; and they anointed David king over Israel. [4] David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. [5] In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah. [6] The king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, “The blind and the lame will keep you out of here,” thinking, “David can’t come in here.” [7] Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion. This is David’s city. [8] David said on that day, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites, let him go up to the watercourse and strike those lame and blind, who are hated by David’s soul.” Therefore they say, “The blind and the lame can’t come into the house.” [9] David lived in the stronghold, and called it David’s city. David built around from Millo and inward. [10] David grew greater and greater, for Yahweh, the God of Armies, was with him. [11] Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, with cedar trees, carpenters, and masons; and they built David a house. [12] David perceived that Yahweh had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel’s sake. [13] David took more concubines and wives for himself out of Jerusalem, after he had come from Hebron; and more sons and daughters were born to David. [14] These are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, [15] Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, [16] Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet. [17] When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David, but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold. [18] Now the Philistines had come and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. [19] David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hand?”Yahweh said to David, “Go up; for I will certainly deliver the Philistines into your hand.” [20] David came to Baal Perazim, and David struck them there. Then he said, “Yahweh has broken my enemies before me, like the breach of waters.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim.ⓘ [21] They left their images there, and David and his men took them away. [22] The Philistines came up yet again and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. [23] When David inquired of Yahweh, he said, “You shall not go up. Circle around behind them, and attack them in front of the mulberry trees. [24] When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then stir yourself up; for then Yahweh has gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.” [25] David did so, as Yahweh commanded him, and struck the Philistines all the way from Geba to Gezer.
Footnotes
- “Baal Perazim” means “Lord who breaks out”.
King James Version
[1] Then cameH935(QalImpf) all the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 to DavidH1732 unto Hebron,H2275 and spake,H559(QalImpf) saying,H559(QalInf) Behold, we [are] thy boneH6106 and thy flesh.H1320 [2] Also in time past,H865 when SaulH7586 was kingH4428 over us, thou wast he that leddest outH3318(HiphPtc) and broughtest inH935(HiphPtc) Israel:H3478 and the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) to thee, Thou shalt feedH7462(QalImpf) my peopleH5971 Israel,H3478 and thou shalt be a captainH5057 over Israel.H3478 [3] So all the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478 cameH935(QalImpf) to the kingH4428 to Hebron;H2275 and kingH4428 DavidH1732 madeH3772(QalImpf) a leagueH1285 with them in HebronH2275 beforeH6440 the Lord:H3068 and they anointedH4886(QalImpf) DavidH1732 kingH4428 over Israel.H3478 [4] DavidH1732 [was] thirtyH7970 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he began to reign,H4427(QalInf) [and] he reignedH4427(QalPerf) fortyH705 years.H8141 [5] In HebronH2275 he reignedH4427(QalPerf) over JudahH3063 sevenH7651 yearsH8141 and sixH8337 months:H2320 and in JerusalemH3389 he reignedH4427(QalPerf) thirtyH7970 and threeH7969 yearsH8141 over all IsraelH3478 and Judah.H3063 [6] And the kingH4428 and his menH582 wentH3212(QalImpf) to JerusalemH3389 unto the Jebusites,H2983 the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of the land:H776 which spakeH559(QalImpf) unto David,H1732 saying,H559(QalInf) Except thou take awayH5493(HiphInf) the blindH5787 and the lame,H6455 thou shalt not come inH935(QalImpf) hither: thinking,H559(QalInf) DavidH1732 cannot come inH935(QalImpf) hither. [7] Nevertheless DavidH1732 tookH3920(QalImpf) the strong holdH4686 of Zion:H6726 the same [is] the cityH5892 of David.H1732 [8] And DavidH1732 saidH559(QalImpf) on that day,H3117 Whosoever getteth upH5060(QalImpf) to the gutter,H6794 and smitethH5221(HiphPtc) the Jebusites,H2983 and the lameH6455 and the blind,H5787 [that are] hatedH8130(QalPasPtc) of David’sH1732 soul,H5315 [he shall be chief and captain]. Wherefore they said,H559(QalImpf) The blindH5787 and the lameH6455 shall not comeH935(QalImpf) into the house.H1004 [9] So DavidH1732 dweltH3427(QalImpf) in the fort,H4686 and calledH7121(QalImpf) it the cityH5892 of David.H1732 And DavidH1732 builtH1129(QalImpf) round aboutH5439 from MilloH4407 and inward.H1004 [10] And DavidH1732 wentH3212(QalImpf) on,H1980(QalInf) and grew great,H1419 and the LordH3068 GodH430 of hostsH6635 [was] with him. [11] And HiramH2438 kingH4428 of TyreH6865 sentH7971(QalImpf) messengersH4397 to David,H1732 and cedarH730 trees,H6086 and carpenters,H2796 and masons:H7023 and they builtH1129(QalImpf) DavidH1732 an house.H1004 [12] And DavidH1732 perceivedH3045(QalImpf) that the LordH3068 had establishedH3559(HiphPerf) him kingH4428 over Israel,H3478 and that he had exaltedH5375(PielPerf) his kingdomH4467 for his peopleH5971 Israel’sH3478 sake. [13] And DavidH1732 tookH3947(QalImpf) [him] more concubinesH6370 and wivesH802 out of Jerusalem,H3389 afterH310 he was comeH935(QalInf) from Hebron:H2275 and there were yet sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323 bornH3205(NiphImpf) to David.H1732 [14] And these [be] the namesH8034 of those that were bornH3209 unto him in Jerusalem;H3389 Shammua,H8051 and Shobab,H7727 and Nathan,H5416 and Solomon,H8010 [15] IbharH2984 also, and Elishua,H474 and Nepheg,H5298 and Japhia,H3309 [16] And Elishama,H476 and Eliada,H450 and Eliphalet.H467 [17] But when the PhilistinesH6430 heardH8085(QalImpf) that they had anointedH4886(QalPerf) DavidH1732 kingH4428 over Israel,H3478 all the PhilistinesH6430 came upH5927(QalImpf) to seekH1245(PielInf) David;H1732 and DavidH1732 heardH8085(QalImpf) [of it], and went downH3381(QalImpf) to the hold.H4686 [18] The PhilistinesH6430 also cameH935(QalPerf) and spreadH5203(NiphImpf) themselves in the valleyH6010 of Rephaim.H7497 [19] And DavidH1732 enquiredH7592(QalImpf) of the Lord,H3068 saying,H559(QalInf) Shall I go upH5927(QalImpf) to the Philistines?H6430 wilt thou deliverH5414(QalImpf) them into mine hand?H3027 And the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto David,H1732 Go up:H5927(QalImpv) for I will doubtlessH5414(QalInf) deliverH5414(QalImpf) the PhilistinesH6430 into thine hand.H3027 [20] And DavidH1732 cameH935(QalImpf) to Baalperazim,H1188 and DavidH1732 smoteH5221(HiphImpf) them there, and said,H559(QalImpf) The LordH3068 hath broken forthH6555(QalPerf) upon mine enemiesH341(QalActPtc) beforeH6440 me, as the breachH6556 of waters.H4325 Therefore he calledH7121(QalPerf) the nameH8034 of that placeH4725 Baalperazim.H1188 [21] And there they leftH5800(QalImpf) their images,H6091 and DavidH1732 and his menH582 burnedH5375(QalImpf) them. [22] And the PhilistinesH6430 came upH5927(QalInf) yet again,H3254(HiphImpf) and spreadH5203(NiphImpf) themselves in the valleyH6010 of Rephaim.H7497 [23] And when DavidH1732 enquiredH7592(QalImpf) of the Lord,H3068 he said,H559(QalImpf) Thou shalt not go up;H5927(QalImpf) [but] fetch a compassH5437(HiphImpv) behindH310 them, and comeH935(QalPerf) upon them over againstH4136 the mulberry trees.H1057 [24] And let it be, when thou hearestH8085(QalInf) the soundH6963 of a goingH6807 in the topsH7218 of the mulberry trees,H1057 that then thou shalt bestirH2782(QalImpf) thyself: for then shall the LordH3068 go outH3318(QalPerf) beforeH6440 thee, to smiteH5221(HiphInf) the hostH4264 of the Philistines.H6430 [25] And DavidH1732 did so,H6213(QalImpf) as the LordH3068 had commandedH6680(PielPerf) him; and smoteH5221(HiphImpf) the PhilistinesH6430 from GebaH1387 until thou comeH935(QalInf) to Gazer.H1507
