Matthew 17 (WEBP)

[1] After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain by themselves.
[2] He was changed§ before them. His face shone like the sun, and his garments became as white as the light.
[3] Behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them talking with him.
[4] Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, let’s make three tents here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
[5] While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. Behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.”
[6] When the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces, and were very afraid.
[7] Jesus came and touched them and said, “Get up, and don’t be afraid.”
[8] Lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus alone.
[9] As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Don’t tell anyone what you saw, until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”
[10] His disciples asked him, saying, “Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
[11] Jesus answered them, “Elijah indeed comes first, and will restore all things;
[12] but I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they didn’t recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted to. Even so the Son of Man will also suffer by them.”
[13] Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptizer.
[14] When they came to the multitude, a man came to him, kneeling down to him and saying,
[15] “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is epileptic and suffers grievously; for he often falls into the fire, and often into the water.
[16] So I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him.”
[17] Jesus answered, “Faithless and perverse generation! How long will I be with you? How long will I bear with you? Bring him here to me.”
[18] Jesus rebuked the demon, and it went out of him, and the boy was cured from that hour.
[19] Then the disciples came to Jesus privately, and said, “Why weren’t we able to cast it out?”
[20] He said to them, “Because of your unbelief. For most certainly I tell you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
[21] But this kind doesn’t go out except by prayer and fasting.” °
[22] While they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered up into the hands of men,
[23] and they will kill him, and the third day he will be raised up.” They were exceedingly sorry.
[24] When they had come to Capernaum, those who collected the didrachma coins° came to Peter, and said, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the didrachma?”
[25] He said, “Yes.” When he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth receive toll or tribute? From their children, or from strangers?”
[26] Peter said to him, “From strangers.” Jesus said to him, “Therefore the children are exempt.
[27] But, lest we cause them to stumble, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up. When you have opened its mouth, you will find a stater coin.° Take that, and give it to them for me and you.”

Matthew 17:2 or, transfigured
Matthew 17:21 NU omits verse 21.
Matthew 17:24 A didrachma is a Greek silver coin worth 2 drachmas, about as much as 2 Roman denarii, or about 2 days’ wages. It was commonly used to pay the half-shekel temple tax, because 2 drachmas were worth one half shekel of silver. A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces.
Matthew 17:27 A stater is a silver coin equivalent to four Attic or two Alexandrian drachmas, or a Jewish shekel: just exactly enough to cover the half-shekel temple tax for two people. A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces, usually in the form of a silver coin.

Matthew 17 (KJVS)

[1] And G2532 after G3326 six G1803 days G2250 Jesus G2424 taketh G3880 (PresActInd) Peter G4074 G2532, James G2385, and G2532 John G2491 his G846 brother G80, and G2532 bringeth G399 them G846 up G399 (PresActInd) into G1519 an high G5308 mountain G3735 apart G2596 G2398,
[2] And G2532 was transfigured G3339 (AorPasInd) before G1715 them G846: and G2532 his G846 face G4383 did shine G2989 (AorActInd) as G5613 the sun G2246, and G1161 his G846 raiment G2440 was G1096 (Aor2MidDepInd) white G3022 as G5613 the light G5457.
[3] And G2532, behold G2400 (Aor2ActImpr), there appeared G3700 (AorPasInd) unto them G846 Moses G3475 and G2532 Elias G2243 talking G4814 (PresActPtc) with G3326 him G846.
[4] Then G1161 answered G611 (AorPasDepPtc) Peter G4074, and said G2036 (Aor2ActInd) unto Jesus G2424, Lord G2962, it is G2076 (PresInd) good G2570 for us G2248 to be G1511 (PresInf) here G5602: if G1487 thou wilt G2309 (PresActInd), let us make G4160 (AorActSubj) here G5602 three G5140 tabernacles G4633; one G3391 for thee G4671, and G2532 one G3391 for Moses G3475, and G2532 one G3391 for Elias G2243.
[5] While he G846 yet G2089 spake G2980 (PresActPtc), behold G2400 (Aor2ActImpr), a bright G5460 cloud G3507 overshadowed G1982 (AorActInd) them G846: and G2532 behold G2400 (Aor2ActImpr) a voice G5456 out of G1537 the cloud G3507, which said G3004 (PresActPtc), This G3778 is G2076 (PresInd) my G3450 beloved G27 Son G5207, in G1722 whom G3739 I am well pleased G2106 (AorActInd); hear ye G191 (PresActImpr) him G846.
[6] And G2532 when the disciples G3101 heard G191 (AorActPtc) [it], they fell G4098 (Aor2ActInd) on G1909 their G846 face G4383, and G2532 were sore G4970 afraid G5399 (AorPasDepInd).
[7] And G2532 Jesus G2424 came G4334 (Aor2ActPtc) and touched G680 (AorMidDepInd) them G846, and G2532 said G2036 (Aor2ActInd), Arise G1453 (AorPasImpr), and G2532 be G5399 not G3361 afraid G5399 (PresMidPasDepImpr).
[8] And G1161 when they had lifted up G1869 (AorActPtc) their G846 eyes G3788, they saw G1492 (Aor2ActInd) no man G3762, save G1508 Jesus G2424 only G3441.
[9] And G2532 as they G846 came down G2597 (PresActPtc) from G575 the mountain G3735, Jesus G2424 charged G1781 (AorMidDepInd) them G846, saying G3004 (PresActPtc), Tell G2036 (Aor2ActSubj) the vision G3705 to no man G3367, until G2193 G3739 the Son G5207 of man G444 be risen again G450 (Aor2ActSubj) from G1537 the dead G3498.
[10] And G2532 his G846 disciples G3101 asked G1905 (AorActInd) him G846, saying G3004 (PresActPtc), Why G5101 then G3767 say G3004 (PresActInd) the scribes G1122 that G3754 Elias G2243 must G1163 (PresInd) first G4412 come G2064 (Aor2ActInf)?
[11] And G1161 Jesus G2424 answered G611 (AorPasDepPtc) and said G2036 (Aor2ActInd) unto them G846, Elias G2243 truly G3303 shall first G4412 come G2064 (PresMidPasDepInd), and G2532 restore G600 (FutActInd) all things G3956.
[12] But G1161 I say G3004 (PresActInd) unto you G5213, That G3754 Elias G2243 is come G2064 (Aor2ActInd) already G2235, and G2532 they knew G1921 (Aor2ActInd) him G846 not G3756, but G235 have done G4160 (AorActInd) unto G1722 him G846 whatsoever G3745 they listed G2309 (AorActInd). Likewise G3779 shall G3195 (PresActInd) also G2532 the Son G5207 of man G444 suffer G3958 (PresActInf) of G5259 them G846.
[13] Then G5119 the disciples G3101 understood G4920 (AorActInd) that G3754 he spake G2036 (Aor2ActInd) unto them G846 of G4012 John G2491 the Baptist G910.
[14] And G2532 when they G846 were come G2064 (Aor2ActPtc) to G4314 the multitude G3793, there came G4334 (Aor2ActInd) to him G846 a [certain] man G444, kneeling down G1120 (PresActPtc) to him G846, and G2532 saying G3004 (PresActPtc),
[15] Lord G2962, have mercy G1653 (AorActImpr) on my G3450 son G5207: for G3754 he is lunatick G4583 (PresMidPasDepInd), and G2532 sore G2560 vexed G3958 (PresActInd): for G1063 ofttimes G4178 he falleth G4098 (PresActInd) into G1519 the fire G4442, and G2532 oft G4178 into G1519 the water G5204.
[16] And G2532 I brought G4374 (AorActInd) him G846 to thy G4675 disciples G3101, and G2532 they could G1410 (AorPasDepInd) not G3756 cure G2323 (AorActInf) him G846.
[17] Then G1161 Jesus G2424 answered G611 (AorPasDepPtc) and said G2036 (Aor2ActInd), O G5599 faithless G571 and G2532 perverse G1294 (PerfPasPtc) generation G1074, how long G2193 G4219 shall I be G2071 (FutInd) with G3326 you G5216? how long G2193 G4219 shall I suffer G430 (FutMidDepInd) you G5216? bring G5342 (PresActImpr) him G846 hither G5602 to me G3427.
[18] And G2532 Jesus G2424 rebuked G2008 (AorActInd) the devil G1140; and G2532 he G846 departed G1831 (Aor2ActInd) out of G575 him G846: and G2532 the child G3816 was cured G2323 (AorPasInd) from G575 that very G1565 hour G5610.
[19] Then G5119 came G4334 (Aor2ActPtc) the disciples G3101 to Jesus G2424 apart G2596 G2398, and said G2036 (Aor2ActInd), Why G1302 could G1410 (AorPasDepInd) not G3756 we G2249 cast G1544 him G846 out G1544 (Aor2ActInf)?
[20] And G1161 Jesus G2424 said G2036 (Aor2ActInd) unto them G846, Because G1223 of your G5216 unbelief G570: for G1063 verily G281 I say G3004 (PresActInd) unto you G5213, If G1437 ye have G2192 (PresActSubj) faith G4102 as G5613 a grain G2848 of mustard seed G4615, ye shall say G2046 (FutActInd) unto this G5129 mountain G3735, Remove G3327 (Aor2ActImpr) hence G1782 to yonder place G1563; and G2532 it shall remove G3327 (FutMidDepInd); and G2532 nothing G3762 shall be impossible G101 (FutActInd) unto you G5213.
[21] Howbeit G1161 this G5124 kind G1085 goeth G1607 not G3756 out G1607 (PresMidPasDepInd) but G1508 by G1722 prayer G4335 and G2532 fasting G3521.
[22] And G1161 while they G846 abode G390 (PresPasPtc) in G1722 Galilee G1056, Jesus G2424 said G2036 (Aor2ActInd) unto them G846, The Son G5207 of man G444 shall be G3195 (PresActInd) betrayed G3860 (PresPasInf) into G1519 the hands G5495 of men G444:
[23] And G2532 they shall kill G615 (FutActInd) him G846, and G2532 the third G5154 day G2250 he shall be raised again G1453 (FutPasInd). And G2532 they were exceeding G4970 sorry G3076 (AorPasInd).
[24] And G1161 when they G846 were come G2064 (Aor2ActPtc) to G1519 Capernaum G2584, they that received G2983 (PresActPtc) tribute G1323 [money] came G4334 (AorActInd) to Peter G4074, and G2532 said G2036 (Aor2ActInd), Doth G5055 not G3756 your G5216 master G1320 pay G5055 (PresActInd) tribute G1323?
[25] He saith G3004 (PresActInd), Yes G3483. And G2532 when G3753 he was come G1525 (Aor2ActInd) into G1519 the house G3614, Jesus G2424 prevented G4399 (AorActInd) him G846, saying G3004 (PresActPtc), What G5101 thinkest G1380 (PresActInd) thou G4671, Simon G4613? of G575 whom G5101 do G2983 the kings G935 of the earth G1093 take G2983 (PresActInd) custom G5056 or G2228 tribute G2778? of G575 their own G846 children G5207, or G2228 of G575 strangers G245?
[26] Peter G4074 saith G3004 (PresActInd) unto him G846, Of G575 strangers G245. Jesus G2424 saith G5346 (ImpfInd) unto him G846, Then G686 are G1526 (PresInd) the children G5207 free G1658.
[27] Notwithstanding G1161, lest G3363 we should offend G4624 (AorActSubj) them G846, go thou G4198 (AorPasDepPtc) to G1519 the sea G2281, and cast G906 (Aor2ActImpr) an hook G44, and G2532 take up G142 (AorActImpr) the fish G2486 that first G4412 cometh up G305 (Aor2ActPtc); and G2532 when thou hast opened G455 (AorActPtc) his G846 mouth G4750, thou shalt find G2147 (FutActInd) a piece of money G4715: that G1565 take G2983 (Aor2ActPtc), and give G1325 (Aor2ActImpr) unto them G846 for G473 me G1700 and G2532 thee G4675.

Young’s Literal Translation

Matthew 17 (YLT)

[1] And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, and James, and John his brother, and doth bring them up to a high mount by themselves,
[2] and he was transfigured before them, and his face shone as the sun, and his garments did become white as the light,
[3] and lo, appear to them did Moses and Elijah, talking together with him.
[4] And Peter answering said to Jesus, ‘Sir, it is good to us to be here; if thou wilt, we may make here three booths-for thee one, and for Moses one, and one for Elijah.’
[5] While he is yet speaking, lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying, ‘This is My Son,-the Beloved, in whom I did delight; hear him.’
[6] And the disciples having heard, did fall upon their face, and were exceedingly afraid,
[7] and Jesus having come near, touched them, and said, ‘Rise, be not afraid,’
[8] and having lifted up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus only.
[9] And as they are coming down from the mount, Jesus charged them, saying, ‘Say to no one the vision, till the Son of Man out of the dead may rise.’
[10] And his disciples questioned him, saying, ‘Why then do the scribes say that Elijah it behoveth to come first?’
[11] And Jesus answering said to them, ‘Elijah doth indeed come first, and shall restore all things,
[12] and I say to you-Elijah did already come, and they did not know him, but did with him whatever they would, so also the Son of Man is about to suffer by them.’
[13] Then understood the disciples that concerning John the Baptist he spake to them.
[14] And when they came unto the multitude, there came to him a man, kneeling down to him,
[15] and saying, ‘Sir, deal kindly with my son, for he is lunatic, and doth suffer miserably, for often he doth fall into the fire, and often into the water,
[16] and I brought him near to thy disciples, and they were not able to heal him.’
[17] And Jesus answering said, ‘O generation, unstedfast and perverse, till when shall I be with you? till when shall I bear you? bring him to me hither;’
[18] and Jesus rebuked him, and the demon went out of him, and the lad was healed from that hour.
[19] Then the disciples having come to Jesus by himself, said, ‘Wherefore were we not able to cast him out?’
[20] And Jesus said to them, ‘Through your want of faith; for verily I say to you, if ye may have faith as a grain of mustard, ye shall say to this mount, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible to you,
[21] and this kind doth not go forth except in prayer and fasting.’
[22] And while they are living in Galilee, Jesus said to them, ‘The Son of Man is about to be delivered up to the hands of men,
[23] and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall rise,’ and they were exceeding sorry.
[24] And they having come to Capernaum, those receiving the didrachms came near to Peter, and said, ‘Your teacher-doth he not pay the didrachms?’ He saith, ‘Yes.’
[25] And when he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, ‘What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth-from whom do they receive custom or poll-tax? from their sons or from the strangers?’
[26] Peter saith to him, ‘From the strangers.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Then are the sons free;
[27] but, that we may not cause them to stumble, having gone to the sea, cast a hook, and the fish that hath come up first take thou up, and having opened its mouth, thou shalt find a stater, that having taken, give to them for me and thee.’
