In the third year, Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel.

And it came to pass in the third H7992 year, H8141 that Jehoshaphat H3092 the king H4428 of Judah H3063 came down H3381 (QalImpf) to the king H4428 of Israel. H3478

και εγενηθη εν τω ενιαυτω τω τριτω και κατεβη ιωσαφατ βασιλευς ιουδα προς βασιλεα ισραηλ

The king of Israel said to his servants, “You know that Ramoth Gilead is ours, and we do nothing, and don’t take it out of the hand of the king of Syria?”

And the king H4428 of Israel H3478 said H559 (QalImpf) unto his servants, H5650 Know H3045 (QalPerf) ye that Ramoth H7433 in Gilead H1568 [is] ours, and we [be] still, H2814 (HiphPtc) [and] take H3947 (QalInf) it not out of the hand H3027 of the king H4428 of Syria? H758

και ειπεν βασιλευς ισραηλ προς τους παιδας αυτου ει οιδατε οτι ημιν ρεμμαθ γαλααδ και ημεις σιωπωμεν λαβειν αυτην εκ χειρος βασιλεως συριας

He said to Jehoshaphat, “Will you go with me to battle to Ramoth Gilead?” Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”

And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto Jehoshaphat, H3092 Wilt thou go H3212 (QalImpf) with me to battle H4421 to Ramothgilead? H7433 H1568 And Jehoshaphat H3092 said H559 (QalImpf) to the king H4428 of Israel, H3478 I [am] as thou H3644 [art], my people H5971 as thy people, H5971 my horses H5483 as thy horses. H5483

και ειπεν βασιλευς ισραηλ προς ιωσαφατ αναβηση μεθ ημων εις ρεμμαθ γαλααδ εις πολεμον και ειπεν ιωσαφατ καθως εγω ουτως και συ καθως ο λαος μου ο λαος σου καθως οι ιπποι μου οι ιπποι σου

Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “Please inquire first for Yahweh’s word.”

And Jehoshaphat H3092 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the king H4428 of Israel, H3478 Enquire, H1875 (QalImpv) I pray thee, at the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 to day. H3117

και ειπεν ιωσαφατ βασιλευς ιουδα προς βασιλεα ισραηλ επερωτησατε δη σημερον τον κυριον

Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said to them, “Should I go against Ramoth Gilead to battle, or should I refrain?” They said, “Go up; for the Lord will deliver it into the hand of the king.”

και συνηθροισεν ο βασιλευς ισραηλ παντας τους προφητας ως τετρακοσιους ανδρας και ειπεν αυτοις ο βασιλευς ει πορευθω εις ρεμμαθ γαλααδ εις πολεμον η επισχω και ειπαν αναβαινε και διδους δωσει κυριος εις χειρας του βασιλεως

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Yahweh, Micaiah the son of Imlah; but I hate him, for he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil.” Jehoshaphat said, “Don’t let the king say so.”

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς ισραηλ προς ιωσαφατ ετι εστιν ανηρ εις του επερωτησαι τον κυριον δι αυτου και εγω μεμισηκα αυτον οτι ου λαλει περι εμου καλα αλλ η κακα μιχαιας υιος ιεμλα και ειπεν ιωσαφατ βασιλευς ιουδα μη λεγετω ο βασιλευς ουτως

Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said, “Quickly get Micaiah the son of Imlah.”

και εκαλεσεν ο βασιλευς ισραηλ ευνουχον ενα και ειπεν ταχος μιχαιαν υιον ιεμλα

Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah were sitting each on his throne, arrayed in their robes, in an open place at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them.

All the prophets prophesied so, saying, “Go up to Ramoth Gilead and prosper; for Yahweh will deliver it into the hand of the king.”

και παντες οι προφηται επροφητευον ουτως λεγοντες αναβαινε εις ρεμμαθ γαλααδ και ευοδωσει και δωσει κυριος εις χειρας σου και τον βασιλεα συριας

The messenger who went to call Micaiah spoke to him, saying, “See now, the prophets declare good to the king with one mouth. Please let your word be like the word of one of them, and speak good.”

And the messenger H4397 that was gone H1980 (QalPerf) to call H7121 (QalInf) Micaiah H4321 spake H1696 (PielPerf) unto him, saying, H559 (QalInf) Behold now, the words H1697 of the prophets H5030 [declare] good H2896 unto the king H4428 with one H259 mouth: H6310 let thy word, H1697 I pray thee, be like the word H1697 of one H259 of them, and speak H1696 (PielPerf) [that which is] good. και ο αγγελος ο πορευθεις καλεσαι τον μιχαιαν ελαλησεν αυτω λεγων ιδου δη λαλουσιν παντες οι προφηται εν στοματι ενι καλα περι του βασιλεως γινου δη και συ εις λογους σου κατα τους λογους ενος τουτων και λαλησον καλα

When he had come to the king, the king said to him, “Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth Gilead to battle, or shall we forbear?” He answered him, “Go up and prosper; and Yahweh will deliver it into the hand of the king.”

So he came H935 (QalImpf) to the king. H4428 And the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Micaiah, H4321 shall we go H3212 (QalImpf) against Ramothgilead H7433 H1568 to battle, H4421 or shall we forbear? και ηλθεν προς τον βασιλεα και ειπεν αυτω ο βασιλευς μιχαια ει αναβω εις ρεμμαθ γαλααδ εις πολεμον η επισχω και ειπεν αναβαινε και ευοδωσει και δωσει κυριος εις χειρα του βασιλεως

The king said to him, “How many times do I have to adjure you that you speak to me nothing but the truth in Yahweh’s name?”

And the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, How many times H6471 shall I adjure H7650 (HiphPtc) thee that thou tell H1696 (PielImpf) me nothing but [that which is] true H571 in the name H8034 of the Lord? H3068

και ειπεν αυτω ο βασιλευς ποσακις εγω ορκιζω σε οπως λαλησης προς με αληθειαν εν ονοματι κυριου

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Didn’t I tell you that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?”

And the king H4428 of Israel H3478 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Jehoshaphat, H3092 Did I not tell H559 (QalPerf) thee that he would prophesy H5012 (HithImpf) no good H2896 concerning me, but evil? H7451

και ειπεν βασιλευς ισραηλ προς ιωσαφατ βασιλεα ιουδα ουκ ειπα προς σε ου προφητευει ουτος μοι καλα διοτι αλλ η κακα

The king of Israel said, “Take Micaiah, and carry him back to Amon the governor of the city and to Joash the king’s son.

And the king H4428 of Israel H3478 said, H559 (QalImpf) Take H3947 (QalImpv) Micaiah, H4321 and carry him back H7725 (HiphImpv) unto Amon H526 the governor H8269 of the city, H5892 and to Joash H3101 the king’s H4428 son; H1121

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς ισραηλ λαβετε τον μιχαιαν και αποστρεψατε αυτον προς εμηρ τον αρχοντα της πολεως και τω ιωας υιω του βασιλεως

Say, ‘The king says, “Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace.” ’ ”

And say, H559 (QalPerf) Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the king, H4428 Put H7760 (QalImpv) this [fellow] in the prison, H1004 H3608 and feed H398 (HiphImpv) him with bread H3899 of affliction H3906 and with water H4325 of affliction, H3906 until I come H935 (QalInf) in peace. H7965

ειπον θεσθαι τουτον εν φυλακη και εσθιειν αυτον αρτον θλιψεως και υδωρ θλιψεως εως του επιστρεψαι με εν ειρηνη

So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead.

So the king H4428 of Israel H3478 and Jehoshaphat H3092 the king H4428 of Judah H3063 went up H5927 (QalImpf) to Ramothgilead. H7433 H1568

και ανεβη βασιλευς ισραηλ και ιωσαφατ βασιλευς ιουδα μετ αυτου εις ρεμμαθ γαλααδ

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will disguise myself and go into the battle, but you put on your robes.” The king of Israel disguised himself and went into the battle.

And the king H4428 of Israel H3478 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Jehoshaphat, H3092 I will disguise H2664 (HithInf) myself, and enter H935 (QalInf) into the battle; H4421 but put thou on H3847 (QalImpv) thy robes. H899 And the king H4428 of Israel H3478 disguised H2664 (HithImpf) himself, and went H935 (QalImpf) into the battle. H4421

και ειπεν βασιλευς ισραηλ προς ιωσαφατ βασιλεα ιουδα συγκαλυψομαι και εισελευσομαι εις τον πολεμον και συ ενδυσαι τον ιματισμον μου και συνεκαλυψατο ο βασιλευς ισραηλ και εισηλθεν εις τον πολεμον

Now the king of Syria had commanded the thirty-two captains of his chariots, saying, “Don’t fight with small nor great, except only with the king of Israel.”

But the king H4428 of Syria H758 commanded H6680 (PielPerf) his thirty H7970 and two H8147 captains H8269 that had rule over his chariots, H7393 saying, H559 (QalInf) Fight H3898 (NiphImpf) neither with small H6996 nor great, H1419 save only with the king H4428 of Israel. H3478

και βασιλευς συριας ενετειλατο τοις αρχουσι των αρματων αυτου τριακοντα και δυσιν λεγων μη πολεμειτε μικρον και μεγαν αλλ η τον βασιλεα ισραηλ μονωτατον

When the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, “Surely that is the king of Israel!” and they came over to fight against him. Jehoshaphat cried out.

And it came to pass, when the captains H8269 of the chariots H7393 saw H7200 (QalInf) Jehoshaphat, H3092 that they said, H559 (QalPerf) Surely it [is] the king H4428 of Israel. H3478 And they turned aside H5493 (QalImpf) to fight H3898 (NiphInf) against him: and Jehoshaphat H3092 cried out. H2199 (QalImpf)

και εγενετο ως ειδον οι αρχοντες των αρματων τον ιωσαφατ βασιλεα ιουδα και αυτοι ειπον φαινεται βασιλευς ισραηλ ουτος και εκυκλωσαν αυτον πολεμησαι και ανεκραξεν ιωσαφατ

When the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him.

And it came to pass, when the captains H8269 of the chariots H7393 perceived H7200 (QalInf) that it [was] not the king H4428 of Israel, H3478 that they turned back H7725 (QalImpf) from pursuing H310 him.

και εγενετο ως ειδον οι αρχοντες των αρματων οτι ουκ εστιν βασιλευς ισραηλ ουτος και απεστρεψαν απ αυτου

A certain man drew his bow at random, and struck the king of Israel between the joints of the armor. Therefore he said to the driver of his chariot, “Turn around, and carry me out of the battle, for I am severely wounded.”

And a [certain] man H376 drew H4900 (QalPerf) a bow H7198 at a venture, H8537 and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) the king H4428 of Israel H3478 between the joints H1694 of the harness: H8302 wherefore he said H559 (QalImpf) unto the driver of his chariot, H7395 Turn H2015 (QalImpv) thine hand, H3027 and carry me out H3318 (HiphImpv) of the host; H4264 for I am wounded. H2470 (HophPerf)

και ενετεινεν εις το τοξον ευστοχως και επαταξεν τον βασιλεα ισραηλ ανα μεσον του πνευμονος και ανα μεσον του θωρακος και ειπεν τω ηνιοχω αυτου επιστρεψον τας χειρας σου και εξαγαγε με εκ του πολεμου οτι τετρωμαι

The battle increased that day. The king was propped up in his chariot facing the Syrians, and died at evening. The blood ran out of the wound into the bottom of the chariot.

And the battle H4421 increased H5927 (QalImpf) that day: H3117 and the king H4428 was stayed up H5975 (HophPtc) in his chariot H4818 against H5227 the Syrians, H758 and died H4191 (QalImpf) at even: H6153 and the blood H1818 ran out H3332 (QalImpf) of the wound H4347 into the midst H2436 of the chariot. H7393

και ετροπωθη ο πολεμος εν τη ημερα εκεινη και ο βασιλευς ην εστηκως επι του αρματος εξ εναντιας συριας απο πρωι εως εσπερας και απεχυννε το αιμα εκ της πληγης εις τον κολπον του αρματος και απεθανεν εσπερας και εξεπορευετο το αιμα της τροπης εως του κολπου του αρματος

So the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria.

So the king H4428 died, H4191 (QalImpf) and was brought H935 (QalImpf) to Samaria; H8111 and they buried H6912 (QalImpf) the king H4428 in Samaria. H8111

οτι τεθνηκεν ο βασιλευς και ηλθον εις σαμαρειαν και εθαψαν τον βασιλεα εν σαμαρεια

Now the rest of the acts of Ahab, and all that he did, and the ivory house which he built, and all the cities that he built, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

και τα λοιπα των λογων αχααβ και παντα α εποιησεν και οικον ελεφαντινον ον ωκοδομησεν και πασας τας πολεις ας εποιησεν ουκ ιδου ταυτα γεγραπται εν βιβλιω λογων των ημερων των βασιλεων ισραηλ

Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel.

Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel.

There was no king in Edom. A deputy ruled.

But Yahweh’s^§ angel said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and tell them, ‘Is it because there is no God^§ in Israel that you go to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron?

και αγγελος κυριου ελαλησεν προς ηλιου τον θεσβιτην λεγων αναστας δευρο εις συναντησιν των αγγελων οχοζιου βασιλεως σαμαρειας και λαλησεις προς αυτους ει παρα το μη ειναι θεον εν ισραηλ υμεις πορευεσθε επιζητησαι εν τη βααλ μυιαν θεον ακκαρων

They said to him, “A man came up to meet us, and said to us, ‘Go, return to the king who sent you, and tell him, “Yahweh says, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you send to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but you will surely die.’ ” ’ ”

H6138 therefore thou shalt not come down H3381 (QalImpf) from that bed H4296 on which thou art gone up, H5927 (QalPerf) but shalt surely H4191 (QalInf) die. H4191 (QalImpf)

και ειπαν προς αυτον ανηρ ανεβη εις συναντησιν ημων και ειπεν προς ημας δευτε επιστραφητε προς τον βασιλεα τον αποστειλαντα υμας και λαλησατε προς αυτον ταδε λεγει κυριος ει παρα το μη ειναι θεον εν ισραηλ συ πορευη ζητησαι εν τη βααλ μυιαν θεον ακκαρων ουχ ουτως η κλινη εφ ης ανεβης εκει ου καταβηση απ αυτης οτι θανατω αποθανη

Then the king sent a captain of fifty with his fifty to him. He went up to him; and behold,^§ he was sitting on the top of the hill. He said to him, “Man of God, the king has said, ‘Come down!’ ”

2 Kings 1:9 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

Again he sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty. He answered him, “Man of God, the king has said, ‘Come down quickly!’ ”

Yahweh’s angel said to Elijah, “Go down with him. Don’t be afraid of him.” Then he arose and went down with him to the king.

And the angel H4397 of the Lord H3068 said H1696 (PielImpf) unto Elijah, H452 Go down H3381 (QalImpv) with him: be not afraid H3372 (QalImpf) of him. H6440 And he arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and went down H3381 (QalImpf) with him unto the king. H4428

Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.

But when Ahab was dead, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.

και εγενετο μετα το αποθανειν αχααβ και ηθετησεν βασιλευς μωαβ εν βασιλει ισραηλ

King Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel.

He went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me against Moab to battle?” He said, “I will go up. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”

και επορευθη και εξαπεστειλεν προς ιωσαφατ βασιλεα ιουδα λεγων βασιλευς μωαβ ηθετησεν εν εμοι ει πορευση μετ εμου εις μωαβ εις πολεμον και ειπεν αναβησομαι ομοιος μοι ομοιος σοι ως ο λαος μου ο λαος σου ως οι ιπποι μου οι ιπποι σου

So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and the king of Edom, and they marched for seven days along a circuitous route. There was no water for the army or for the animals that followed them.

The king of Israel said, “Alas! For Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς ισραηλ ω οτι κεκληκεν κυριος τους τρεις βασιλεις παρερχομενους δουναι αυτους εν χειρι μωαβ

But Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there a prophet of Yahweh here, that we may inquire of Yahweh by him?” One of the king of Israel’s servants answered, “Elisha the son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah, is here.”

But Jehoshaphat H3092 said, H559 (QalImpf) [Is there] not here a prophet H5030 of the Lord, H3068 that we may enquire H1875 (QalImpf) of the Lord H3068 by him? και ειπεν ιωσαφατ ουκ εστιν ωδε προφητης του κυριου και επιζητησωμεν τον κυριον παρ αυτου και απεκριθη εις των παιδων βασιλεως ισραηλ και ειπεν ωδε ελισαιε υιος σαφατ ος επεχεεν υδωρ επι χειρας ηλιου

Jehoshaphat said, “Yahweh’s word is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

And Jehoshaphat H3092 said, H559 (QalImpf) The word H1697 of the Lord H3068 is H3426 with him. So the king H4428 of Israel H3478 and Jehoshaphat H3092 and the king H4428 of Edom H123 went down H3381 (QalImpf) to him.

και ειπεν ιωσαφατ εστιν αυτω ρημα κυριου και κατεβη προς αυτον βασιλευς ισραηλ και ιωσαφατ βασιλευς ιουδα και βασιλευς εδωμ

Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father, and to the prophets of your mother.” The king of Israel said to him, “No, for Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”

Elisha said, “As Yahweh of Armies lives, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I respect the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward you, nor see you.

και ειπεν ελισαιε ζη κυριος των δυναμεων ω παρεστην ενωπιον αυτου οτι ει μη προσωπον ιωσαφατ βασιλεως ιουδα εγω λαμβανω ει επεβλεψα προς σε και ειδον σε

Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all who were able to put on armor, young and old, and stood on the border.

They said, “This is blood. The kings are surely destroyed, and they have struck each other. Now therefore, Moab, to the plunder!”

When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too severe for him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew a sword, to break through to the king of Edom; but they could not.
