Now this present which your servant has brought to my lord, let it be given to the young men who follow my lord.

‘And, now, this blessing which thy maid-servant hath brought to my lord-it hath been given to the young men who are going up and down at the feet of my lord.

Blessed is your discretion, and blessed are you, who have kept me today from blood guiltiness, and from avenging myself with my own hand.

and blessed is thy discretion, and blessed art thou in that thou hast restrained me this day from coming in with blood, and to restrain my hand to myself.

For indeed, as Yahweh the God of Israel lives, who has withheld me from harming you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, surely there wouldn’t have been left to Nabal by the morning light so much as one who urinates on a wall.”^§

And yet, Jehovah liveth, God of Israel, who hath kept me back from doing evil with thee, for unless thou hadst hasted, and dost come to meet me, surely there had not been left to Nabal till the light of the morning, of those sitting on the wall.’

So David received from her hand that which she had brought him. Then he said to her, “Go up in peace to your house. Behold, I have listened to your voice and have granted your request.”

And David receiveth from her hand that which she hath brought to him, and to her he hath said, ‘Go up in peace to thy house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and accept thy face.’

Abigail came to Nabal; and behold, he held a feast in his house like the feast of a king. Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. Therefore she told him nothing until the morning light.

And Abigail cometh in unto Nabal, and lo, he hath a banquet in his house, like a banquet of the king, and the heart of Nabal is glad within him, and he is drunk unto excess, and she hath not declared to him anything, less or more, till the light of the morning.

When David’s servants had come to Abigail to Carmel, they spoke to her, saying, “David has sent us to you, to take you to him as wife.”

And the servants of David come in unto Abigail at Carmel, and speak unto her, saying, ‘David hath sent us unto thee to take thee to him for a wife.’

The Ziphites came to Saul to Gibeah, saying, “Doesn’t David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert?”

And the Ziphites H2130 came H935 (QalImpf) unto Saul H7586 to Gibeah, H1390 saying, H559 (QalInf) Doth not David H1732 hide H5641 (HithPtc) himself in the hill H1389 of Hachilah, H2444 [which is] before H6440 Jeshimon? H3452

And the Ziphites come in unto Saul, at Gibeah, saying, ‘Is not David hiding himself in the height of Hachilah, on the front of the desert?’

Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert, by the way. But David stayed in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.

And Saul H7586 pitched H2583 (QalImpf) in the hill H1389 of Hachilah, H2444 which [is] before H6440 Jeshimon, H3452 by the way. H1870 But David H1732 abode H3427 (QalActPtc) in the wilderness, H4057 and he saw H7200 (QalImpf) that Saul H7586 came H935 (QalPerf) after H310 him into the wilderness. H4057

And Saul encampeth in the height of Hachilah, which is on the front of the desert, by the way, and David is abiding in the wilderness, and he seeth that Saul hath come after him in to the wilderness;

David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul had certainly come.

and David sendeth spies, and knoweth that Saul hath come unto Nachon,

Then David arose and came to the place where Saul had encamped; and David saw the place where Saul lay, with Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his army. Saul lay within the place of the wagons, and the people were encamped around him.

and David riseth, and cometh in unto the place where Saul hath encamped, and David seeth the place where Saul hath lain, and Abner son of Ner, head of his host, and Saul is lying in the path, and the people are encamping round about him.

So David and Abishai came to the people by night; and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the place of the wagons, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the people lay around him.

David said, “As Yahweh lives, Yahweh will strike him; or his day shall come to die, or he shall go down into battle and perish.

And David saith, ‘Jehovah liveth; except Jehovah doth smite him, or his day come that he hath died, or into battle he go down, and hath been consumed-

David said to Abner, “Aren’t you a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy your lord the king.

And David saith unto Abner, ‘Art not thou a man? and who is like thee in Israel? but why hast thou not watched over thy lord the king? for one of the people had come in to destroy the king, thy lord.

David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the Amalekites; for those were the inhabitants of the land who were of old, on the way to Shur, even to the land of Egypt.

and David goeth up and his men, and they push unto the Geshurite, and the Gerizite, and the Amalekite, (for they are inhabitants of the land from of old), as thou comest in to Shur and unto the land of Egypt,

David struck the land, and saved no man or woman alive, and took away the sheep, the cattle, the donkeys, the camels, and the clothing. Then he returned, and came to Achish.

And David H1732 smote H5221 (HiphPerf) the land, H776 and left neither man H376 nor woman H802 alive, H2421 (PielImpf) and took away H3947 (QalPerf) the sheep, H6629 and the oxen, H1241 and the asses, H2543 and the camels, H1581 and the apparel, H899 and returned, H7725 (QalImpf) and came H935 (QalImpf) to Achish. and David hath smitten the land, and doth not keep alive man and woman, and hath taken sheep, and oxen, and asses, and camels, and garments, and turneth back, and cometh in unto Achish.

David saved neither man nor woman alive to bring them to Gath, saying, “Lest they should tell about us, saying, ‘David did this, and this has been his way all the time he has lived in the country of the Philistines.’ ”

Neither man nor woman doth David keep alive, to bring in word to Gath, saying, ‘Lest they declare it against us, saying, Thus hath David done, and thus is his custom all the days that he hath dwelt in the fields of the Philistines.’

The Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and encamped in Shunem; and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they encamped in Gilboa.

And the Philistines H6430 gathered themselves together, H6908 (NiphImpf) and came H935 (QalImpf) and pitched H2583 (QalImpf) in Shunem: H7766 and Saul H7586 gathered H6908 all Israel H3478 together, H6908 (QalImpf) and they pitched H2583 (QalImpf) in Gilboa. H1533

And the Philistines are gathered, and come in, and encamp in Shunem, and Saul gathereth all Israel, and they encamp in Gilboa,

Saul disguised himself and put on other clothing, and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night. Then he said, “Please consult for me by the familiar spirit, and bring me up whomever I shall name to you.”

And Saul disguiseth himself and putteth on other garments, and goeth, he and two of the men with him, and they come in unto the woman by night, and he saith, ‘Divine, I pray thee, to me by the familiar spirit, and cause to come up to me him whom I say unto thee.’

The woman came to Saul and saw that he was very troubled, and said to him, “Behold, your servant has listened to your voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have listened to your words which you spoke to me.

And the woman H802 came H935 (QalImpf) unto Saul, H7586 and saw H7200 (QalImpf) that he was sore H3966 troubled, H926 (NiphPerf) and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Behold, thine handmaid H8198 hath obeyed H8085 (QalPerf) thy voice, H6963 and I have put H7760 (QalImpf) my life H5315 in my hand, H3709 and have hearkened H8085 (QalImpf) unto thy words H1697 which thou spakest H1696 (PielPerf) unto me.

And the woman cometh in unto Saul, and seeth that he hath been greatly troubled, and saith unto him, ‘Lo, thy maid-servant hath hearkened to thy voice, and I put my soul in my hand, and I obey thy words which thou hast spoken unto me;

Then Achish called David and said to him, “As Yahweh lives, you have been upright, and your going out and your coming in with me in the army is good in my sight; for I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to me to this day. Nevertheless, the lords don’t favor you.

Then Achish H397 called H7121 (QalImpf) David, H1732 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Surely, [as] the Lord H3068 liveth, H2416 thou hast been upright, H3477 and thy going out H3318 (QalInf) and thy coming in H935 (QalInf) with me in the host H4264 [is] good H2896 in my sight: H5869 for I have not found H4672 (QalPerf) evil H7451 in thee since the day H3117 of thy coming H935 (QalInf) unto me unto this day: H3117 nevertheless the lords H5633 favour H2896 thee not. And Achish calleth unto David, and saith unto him, ‘Jehovah liveth, surely thou art upright, and good in mine eyes is thy going out, and thy coming in, with me in the camp, for I have not found in thee evil from the day of thy coming in unto me till this day; and in the eyes of the princes thou art not good;

David said to Achish, “But what have I done? What have you found in your servant so long as I have been before you to this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”

And David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Achish, H397 But what have I done? H6213 (QalPerf) and what hast thou found H4672 (QalPerf) in thy servant H5650 so long as H3117 I have been with thee H6440 unto this day, H3117 that I may not go H935 (QalImpf) fight H3898 (NiphPerf) against the enemies H341 (QalActPtc) of my lord H113 the king? H4428

And David saith unto Achish, ‘But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant from the day that I have been before thee till this day-that I go not in and have fought against the enemies of my lord the king?’

Therefore now rise up early in the morning with the servants of your lord who have come with you; and as soon as you are up early in the morning and have light, depart.”

and now, rise thou early in the morning, and the servants of thy lord who have come with thee, when ye have risen early in the morning, and have light, then go ye.’

When David and his men had come to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid on the South and on Ziklag, and had struck Ziklag and burned it with fire,

And it came to pass, when David H1732 and his men H582 were come H935 (QalInf) to Ziklag H6860 on the third H7992 day, H3117 that the Amalekites H6003 had invaded H6584 (QalPerf) the south, H5045 and Ziklag, H6860 and smitten H5221 (HiphImpf) Ziklag, H6860 and burned H8313 (QalImpf) it with fire; H784

And it cometh to pass, in the coming in of David and his men to Ziklag, on the third day, that the Amalekites have pushed unto the south, and unto Ziklag, and smite Ziklag, and burn it with fire,

When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters were taken captive.

So David H1732 and his men H582 came H935 (QalImpf) to the city, H5892 and, behold, [it was] burned H8313 (QalPasPtc) with fire; H784 and their wives, H802 and their sons, H1121 and their daughters, H1323 were taken captives. H7617 (NiphPerf)

And David cometh in-and his men-unto the city, and lo, burnt with fire, and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters have been taken captive!

So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those who were left behind stayed.

So David H1732 went, H3212 (QalImpf) he and the six H8337 hundred H3967 men H376 that [were] with him, and came H935 (QalImpf) to the brook H5158 Besor, H1308 where those that were left behind H3498 (NiphPtc) stayed. H5975 (QalPerf)

And David goeth on, he and six hundred men who are with him, and they come in unto the brook of Besor, and those left have stood still,

David came to the two hundred men, who were so faint that they could not follow David, whom also they had made to stay at the brook Besor; and they went out to meet David, and to meet the people who were with him. When David came near to the people, he greeted them.

And David cometh in unto the two hundred men who were too faint to go after David, and whom they cause to abide at the brook of Besor, and they go out to meet David, and to meet the people who are with him, and David approacheth the people, and asketh of them of welfare.

Then David said, “Do not do so, my brothers, with that which Yahweh has given to us, who has preserved us, and delivered the troop that came against us into our hand.

And David saith, ‘Ye do not do so, my brethren, with that which Jehovah hath given to us, and He doth preserve us, and doth give the troop which cometh against us into our hand;

When David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, “Behold, a present for you from the plunder of Yahweh’s enemies.”

And when David H1732 came H935 (QalImpf) to Ziklag, H6860 he sent H7971 (PielImpf) of the spoil H7998 unto the elders H2205 of Judah, H3063 [even] to his friends, H7453 saying, H559 (QalInf) Behold a present H1293 for you of the spoil H7998 of the enemies H341 (QalActPtc) of the Lord; H3068

And David cometh in unto Ziklag, and sendeth of the spoil to the elders of Judah, to his friends, (saying, ‘Lo, for you a blessing, of the spoil of the enemies of Jehovah),’

Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through and abuse me!” But his armor bearer would not, for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword and fell on it.

Then said H559 (QalImpf) Saul H7586 unto his armourbearer, H5375 (QalActPtc) H3627 Draw H8025 (QalImpv) thy sword, H2719 and thrust me through H1856 (QalImpv) therewith; lest these uncircumcised H6189 come H935 (QalImpf) and thrust me through, H1856 (QalPerf) and abuse H5953 (HithPerf) me. But his armourbearer H5375 (QalActPtc) H3627 would H14 (QalPerf) not; for he was sore H3966 afraid. and Saul saith to the bearer of his weapons, ‘Draw thy sword, and pierce me with it, lest they come-these uncircumcised-and have pierced me, and rolled themselves on me;’ and the bearer of his weapons hath not been willing, for he is greatly afraid, and Saul taketh the sword, and falleth upon it.

When the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them.

And when the men H582 of Israel H3478 that [were] on the other side H5676 of the valley, H6010 and [they] that [were] on the other side H5676 Jordan, H3383 saw H7200 (QalImpf) that the men H582 of Israel H3478 fled, H5127 (QalPerf) and that Saul H7586 and his sons H1121 were dead, H4191 (QalPerf) they forsook H5800 (QalImpf) the cities, H5892 and fled; H5127 (QalImpf) and the Philistines H6430 came H935 (QalImpf) and dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) in them.

And they see-the men of Israel, who are beyond the valley, and who are beyond the Jordan-that the men of Israel have fled, and that Saul and his sons have died, and they forsake the cities and flee, and Philistines come in, and dwell in them.

On the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

And it came to pass on the morrow, H4283 when the Philistines H6430 came H935 (QalImpf) to strip H6584 (PielInf) the slain, H2491 that they found H4672 (QalImpf) Saul H7586 and his three H7969 sons H1121 fallen H5307 (QalActPtc) in mount H2022 Gilboa. H1533

And it cometh to pass on the morrow, that the Philistines come to strip the wounded, and they find Saul and his three sons fallen on mount Gilboa,

all the valiant men arose, went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan; and they came to Jabesh and burned them there.

All the valiant H2428 men H376 (QK) H381 arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and went H3212 (QalImpf) all night, H3915 and took H3947 (QalImpf) the body H1472 of Saul H7586 and the bodies H1472 of his sons H1121 from the wall H2346 of Bethshan, H1052 and came H935 (QalImpf) to Jabesh, H3003 and burnt H8313 (QalImpf) them there.

and all the men of valour arise, and go all the night, and take the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, from the wall of Beth-Shan, and come in to Jabesh, and burn them there,

on the third day, behold,^§ a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the earth and showed respect.

2 Samuel 1:2 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

It came even to pass on the third H7992 day, H3117 that, behold, a man H376 came H935 (QalActPtc) out of the camp H4264 from Saul H7586 with his clothes H899 rent, H7167 (QalPasPtc) and earth H127 upon his head: H7218 and [so] it was, when he came H935 (QalInf) to David, H1732 that he fell H5307 (QalImpf) to the earth, H776 and did obeisance. and it cometh to pass, on the third day, that lo, a man hath come in out of the camp from Saul, and his garments are rent, and earth on his head; and it cometh to pass, in his coming in unto David, that he falleth to the earth, and doth obeisance.

David said to him, “Where do you come from?” He said to him, “I have escaped out of the camp of Israel.”

And David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, From whence comest H935 (QalImpf) thou? And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Out of the camp H4264 of Israel H3478 am I escaped. H4422 (NiphPerf)

And David saith to him, ‘Whence comest thou?’ and he saith unto him, ‘Out of the camp of Israel I have escaped.’

So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”

And I stand over him, and put him to death, for I knew that he doth not live after his falling, and I take the crown which is on his head, and the bracelet which is on his arm, and bring them in unto my lord hither.’

The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, “The men of Jabesh Gilead were those who buried Saul.”

And the men H582 of Judah H3063 came, H935 (QalImpf) and there they anointed H4886 (QalImpf) David H1732 king H4428 over the house H1004 of Judah. And the men of Judah come, and anoint there David for king over the house of Judah; and they declare to David, saying, ‘The men of Jabesh-Gilead are they who buried Saul.’

However, he refused to turn away. Therefore Abner with the back end of the spear struck him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there and died in the same place. As many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

Howbeit he refused H3985 (PielImpf) to turn aside: H5493 (QalInf) wherefore Abner H74 with the hinder end H310 of the spear H2595 smote H5221 (HiphImpf) him under H413 the fifth H2570 [rib], that the spear H2595 came out H3318 (QalImpf) behind H310 him; and he fell down H5307 (QalImpf) there, and died H4191 (QalImpf) in the same place: H8478 and it came to pass, [that] as many as came H935 (QalActPtc) to the place H4725 where Asahel H6214 fell down H5307 (QalPerf) and died H4191 (QalImpf) stood still. And he refuseth to turn aside, and Abner smiteth him with the hinder part of the spear unto the fifth rib, and the spear cometh out from behind him, and he falleth there, and dieth under it; and it cometh to pass, every one who hath come unto the place where Asahel hath fallen and dieth-they stand still.

But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. The sun went down when they had come to the hill of Ammah, that lies before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

Joab H3097 also and Abishai H52 pursued H7291 (QalImpf) after H310 Abner: H74 and the sun H8121 went down H935 (QalPerf) when they were come H935 (QalPerf) to the hill H1389 of Ammah, H522 that [lieth] before H6440 Giah H1520 by the way H1870 of the wilderness H4057 of Gibeon. H1391

And Joab and Abishai pursue after Abner, and the sun hath gone in, and they have come in unto the height of Ammah, which is on the front of Giah, the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.

And Abner H74 and his men H582 walked H1980 (QalPerf) all that night H3915 through the plain, H6160 and passed over H5674 (QalImpf) Jordan, H3383 and went through H3212 (QalImpf) all Bithron, H1338 and they came H935 (QalImpf) to Mahanaim. H4266

And Abner and his men have gone through the plain all that night, and pass over the Jordan, and go on through all Bithron, and come in to Mahanaim.

Now Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah; and Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you gone in to my father’s concubine?”

and Saul hath a concubine, and her name is Rizpah daughter of Aiah, and Ish-Bosheth saith unto Abner, ‘Wherefore hast thou gone in unto the concubine of my father?’

David said, “Good. I will make a treaty with you, but one thing I require of you. That is, you will not see my face unless you first bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.”

And he saith, ‘Good-I make with thee a covenant; only, one thing I am asking of thee, that is, Thou dost not see my face, except thou dost first bring in Michal, daughter of Saul in thy coming into see my face.’

So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. David made Abner and the men who were with him a feast.

and Abner cometh in unto David, to Hebron, and with him twenty men, and David maketh for Abner, and for the men who are with him, a banquet.

Behold, David’s servants and Joab came from a raid and brought in a great plunder with them; but Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace.

And lo, the servants of David, and Joab, have come from the troop, and much spoil have brought with them, and Abner is not with David in Hebron, for he hath sent him away, and he goeth in peace;

When Joab and all the army who was with him had come, they told Joab, “Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he has sent him away, and he has gone in peace.”

and Joab and all the host that is with him have come, and they declare to Joab, saying, ‘Abner son of Ner hath come unto the king, and he sendeth him away, and he goeth in peace.’

Then Joab came to the king and said, “What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you. Why is it that you have sent him away, and he is already gone?

And Joab cometh unto the king, and saith, ‘What hast thou done? lo, Abner hath come unto thee! why is this-thou hast sent him away, and he is really gone?

You know Abner the son of Ner. He came to deceive you, and to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you do.”

All the people came to urge David to eat bread while it was yet day; but David swore, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else, until the sun goes down.”

Now Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son who was lame in his feet. He was five years old when the news came about Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel; and his nurse picked him up and fled. As she hurried to flee, he fell and became lame. His name was Mephibosheth.

And Jonathan, H3083 Saul’s H7586 son, H1121 had a son H1121 [that was] lame H5223 of [his] feet. And to Jonathan son of Saul is a son-lame; he was a son of five years at the coming in of the rumour of the death of Saul and Jonathan, out of Jezreel, and his nurse lifteth him up, and fleeth, and it cometh to pass in her hasting to flee, that he falleth, and becometh lame, and his name is Mephibosheth.

The sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went out and came at about the heat of the day to the house of Ishbosheth as he took his rest at noon.

And the sons H1121 of Rimmon H7417 the Beerothite, H886 Rechab H7394 and Baanah, H1196 went, H3212 (QalImpf) and came H935 (QalImpf) about the heat H2527 of the day H3117 to the house H1004 of Ishbosheth, H378 who lay H7901 (QalActPtc) on a bed H4904 at noon. H6672

And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, go, and come in at the heat of the day unto the house of Ish-Bosheth, and he is lying down-the lying down of noon;

They came there into the middle of the house as though they would have fetched wheat, and they struck him in the body; and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.
