Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why do you also go with us? Return, and stay with the king; for you are a foreigner and also an exile. Return to your own place.

Ittai answered the king and said, “As Yahweh lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in what place my lord the king is, whether for death or for life, your servant will be there also.”

And Ittai H863 answered H6030 (QalImpf) the king, H4428 and said, H559 (QalImpf) [As] the Lord H3068 liveth, H2416 and [as] my lord H113 the king H4428 liveth, H2416 surely in what place H4725 my lord H113 the king H4428 shall be, whether in death H4194 or life, H2416 even there also will thy servant H5650 be.

but if you return to the city, and tell Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king. As I have been your father’s servant in time past, so I will now be your servant; then will you defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.’

και εαν εις την πολιν επιστρεψης και ερεις τω αβεσσαλωμ διεληλυθασιν οι αδελφοι σου και ο βασιλευς κατοπισθεν μου διεληλυθεν ο πατηρ σου και νυν παις σου ειμι βασιλευ εασον με ζησαι παις του πατρος σου ημην τοτε και αρτιως και νυν εγω δουλος σος και διασκεδασεις μοι την βουλην αχιτοφελ

Don’t you have Zadok and Abiathar the priests there with you? Therefore whatever you hear out of the king’s house, tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.

The king said to Ziba, “What do you mean by these?” Ziba said, “The donkeys are for the king’s household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that those who are faint in the wilderness may drink.”

The king said, “Where is your master’s son?” Ziba said to the king, “Behold, he is staying in Jerusalem; for he said, ‘Today the house of Israel will restore me the kingdom of my father.’ ”

Then the king said to Ziba, “Behold, all that belongs to Mephibosheth is yours.” Ziba said, “I bow down. Let me find favor in your sight, my lord, O king.”

When King David came to Bahurim, behold, a man of the family of Saul’s house came out, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera. He came out and cursed as he came.

He cast stones at David and at all the servants of King David, and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.

The king said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? Because he curses, and because Yahweh has said to him, ‘Curse David,’ who then shall say, ‘Why have you done so?’ ”

The king and all the people who were with him arrived weary; and he refreshed himself there.

And the king, H4428 and all the people H5971 that [were] with him, came H935 (QalImpf) weary, H5889 and refreshed H5314 (NiphImpf) themselves there.

και ηλθεν ο βασιλευς και πας ο λαος αυτου εκλελυμενοι και ανεψυξαν εκει

When Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, had come to Absalom, Hushai said to Absalom, “Long live the king! Long live the king!”

And it came to pass, when Hushai H2365 the Archite, H757 David’s H1732 friend, H7463 was come H935 (QalPerf) unto Absalom, H53 that Hushai H2365 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Absalom, H53 God save H2421 (QalImpf) the king, H4428 God save H2421 (QalImpf) the king. H4428

και εγενηθη ηνικα ηλθεν χουσι ο αρχι εταιρος δαυιδ προς αβεσσαλωμ και ειπεν χουσι προς αβεσσαλωμ ζητω ο βασιλευς

I will come on him while he is weary and exhausted, and will make him afraid. All the people who are with him will flee. I will strike the king only,

And I will come H935 (QalImpf) upon him while he [is] weary H3023 and weak H7504 handed, H3027 and will make him afraid: H2729 (HiphPerf) and all the people H5971 that [are] with him shall flee; H5127 (QalPerf) and I will smite H5221 (HiphPerf) the king H4428 only:

και επελευσομαι επ αυτον και αυτος κοπιων και εκλελυμενος χερσιν και εκστησω αυτον και φευξεται πας ο λαος ο μετ αυτου και παταξω τον βασιλεα μονωτατον

Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, ‘Don’t lodge tonight at the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over, lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people who are with him.’ ”

Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying by En Rogel; and a female servant used to go and report to them, and they went and told King David; for they couldn’t risk being seen coming into the city.

Now Jonathan H3083 and Ahimaaz H290 stayed H5975 (QalActPtc) by Enrogel; H5883 for they might H3201 (QalImpf) not be seen H7200 (NiphInf) to come H935 (QalInf) into the city: H5892 and a wench H8198 went H1980 (QalPerf) and told H5046 (HiphPerf) them; and they went H3212 (QalImpf) and told H5046 (HiphPerf) king H4428 David. After they had departed, they came up out of the well and went and told King David; and they said to David, “Arise and pass quickly over the water; for thus has Ahithophel counseled against you.”

εγενετο δε μετα το απελθειν αυτους και ανεβησαν εκ του λακκου και επορευθησαν και ανηγγειλαν τω βασιλει δαυιδ και ειπαν προς δαυιδ αναστητε και διαβητε ταχεως το υδωρ οτι ουτως εβουλευσατο περι υμων αχιτοφελ

David sent the people out, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. The king said to the people, “I will also surely go out with you myself.”

And David H1732 sent forth H7971 (PielImpf) a third part H7992 of the people H5971 under the hand H3027 of Joab, H3097 and a third part H7992 under the hand H3027 of Abishai H52 the son H1121 of Zeruiah, H6870 Joab’s H3097 brother, H251 and a third part H7992 under the hand H3027 of Ittai H863 the Gittite. H1663 And the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the people, H5971 I will surely H3318 (QalInf) go forth H3318 (QalImpf) with you myself H589 also.

The king said to them, “I will do what seems best to you.” The king stood beside the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.

The king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.” All the people heard when the king commanded all the captains concerning Absalom.

And the king H4428 commanded H6680 (PielImpf) Joab H3097 and Abishai H52 and Ittai, H863 saying, H559 (QalInf) [Deal] gently H328 for my sake with the young man, H5288 [even] with Absalom. και ενετειλατο ο βασιλευς τω ιωαβ και τω αβεσσα και τω εθθι λεγων φεισασθε μοι του παιδαριου του αβεσσαλωμ και πας ο λαος ηκουσεν εντελλομενου του βασιλεως πασιν τοις αρχουσιν υπερ αβεσσαλωμ

The man said to Joab, “Though I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, I still wouldn’t stretch out my hand against the king’s son; for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘Beware that no one touch the young man Absalom.’

And the man H376 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Joab, H3097 Though H3863 I should receive H8254 (QalActPtc) a thousand H505 [shekels] of silver H3701 in mine hand, H3709 [yet] would I not put forth H7971 (QalImpf) mine hand H3027 against the king’s H4428 son: H1121 for in our hearing H241 the king H4428 charged H6680 (PielPerf) thee and Abishai H52 and Ittai, H863 saying, H559 (QalInf) Beware H8104 (QalImpv) that none [touch] the young man H5288 Absalom. ειπεν δε ο ανηρ προς ιωαβ και εγω ειμι ιστημι επι τας χειρας μου χιλιους σικλους αργυριου ου μη επιβαλω χειρα μου επι τον υιον του βασιλεως οτι εν τοις ωσιν ημων ενετειλατο ο βασιλευς σοι και αβεσσα και τω εθθι λεγων φυλαξατε μοι το παιδαριον τον αβεσσαλωμ

Otherwise, if I had dealt falsely against his life (and there is no matter hidden from the king), then you yourself would have set yourself against me.”

μη ποιησαι εν τη ψυχη αυτου αδικον και πας ο λογος ου λησεται απο του βασιλεως και συ στηση εξ εναντιας

Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself the pillar which is in the king’s valley, for he said, “I have no son to keep my name in memory.” He called the pillar after his own name. It is called Absalom’s monument, to this day.

Now Absalom H53 in his lifetime H2416 had taken H3947 (QalPerf) and reared up H5324 (HiphImpf) for himself a pillar, H4678 which [is] in the king’s H4428 dale: H6010 for he said, H559 (QalPerf) I have no son H1121 to keep my name H8034 in remembrance: H2142 (HiphInf) and he called H7121 (QalImpf) the pillar H4678 after his own name: H8034 and it is called H7121 (NiphImpf) unto this day, H3117 Absalom’s H53 place. και αβεσσαλωμ ετι ζων και εστησεν εαυτω την στηλην εν η ελημφθη και εστηλωσεν αυτην λαβειν την στηλην την εν τη κοιλαδι του βασιλεως οτι ειπεν ουκ εστιν αυτω υιος ενεκεν του αναμνησαι το ονομα αυτου και εκαλεσεν την στηλην χειρ αβεσσαλωμ εως της ημερας ταυτης

Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, “Let me now run and carry the king news, how Yahweh has avenged him of his enemies.”

Then said H559 (QalPerf) Ahimaaz H290 the son H1121 of Zadok, H6659 Let me now run, H7323 (QalImpf) and bear H1319 the king H4428 tidings, H1319 (PielImpf) how that the Lord H3068 hath avenged H8199 (QalPerf) him of his enemies. H3027 H341 (QalActPtc)

και αχιμαας υιος σαδωκ ειπεν δραμω δη και ευαγγελιω τω βασιλει οτι εκρινεν αυτω κυριος εκ χειρος των εχθρων αυτου

Joab said to him, “You must not be the bearer of news today, but you must carry news another day. But today you must carry no news, because the king’s son is dead.”

And Joab H3097 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Thou H376 shalt not bear tidings H1309 this day, H3117 but thou shalt bear tidings H1319 (PielPerf) another H312 day: H3117 but this day H3117 thou shalt bear no tidings, H1319 (PielImpf) because the king’s H4428 son H1121 is dead. H4191 (QalPerf)

και ειπεν αυτω ιωαβ ουκ ανηρ ευαγγελιας συ εν τη ημερα ταυτη και ευαγγελιη εν ημερα αλλη εν δε τη ημερα ταυτη ουκ ευαγγελιη ου εινεκεν ο υιος του βασιλεως απεθανεν

Then Joab said to the Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen!” The Cushite bowed himself to Joab, and ran.

The watchman shouted and told the king. The king said, “If he is alone, there is news in his mouth.” He came closer and closer.

και ανεβοησεν ο σκοπος και απηγγειλεν τω βασιλει και ειπεν ο βασιλευς ει μονος εστιν ευαγγελια εν τω στοματι αυτου και επορευετο πορευομενος και εγγιζων

The watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gatekeeper and said, “Behold, a man running alone!” The king said, “He also brings news.”

και ειδεν ο σκοπος ανδρα ετερον τρεχοντα και εβοησεν ο σκοπος προς τη πυλη και ειπεν ιδου ανηρ ετερος τρεχων μονος και ειπεν ο βασιλευς και γε ουτος ευαγγελιζομενος

The watchman said, “I think the running of the first one is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.” The king said, “He is a good man, and comes with good news.”

Ahimaaz called, and said to the king, “All is well.” He bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, “Blessed is Yahweh your God, who has delivered up the men who lifted up their hand against my lord the king!”

The king said, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” Ahimaaz answered, “When Joab sent the king’s servant, even me your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I don’t know what it was.”

The king said, “Come and stand here.” He came and stood still.

Behold, the Cushite came. The Cushite said, “Good news for my lord the king, for Yahweh has avenged you today of all those who rose up against you.”

The king said to the Cushite, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” The Cushite answered, “May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you to do you harm, be as that young man is.”

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς προς τον χουσι ει ειρηνη τω παιδαριω τω αβεσσαλωμ και ειπεν ο χουσι γενοιντο ως το παιδαριον οι εχθροι του κυριου μου του βασιλεως και παντες οσοι επανεστησαν επ αυτον εις κακα

The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate and wept. As he went, he said, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! I wish I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!”

Joab was told, “Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Absalom.”

Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why don’t you speak a word of bringing the king back?”

He bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as one man, so that they sent to the king, saying, “Return, you and all your servants.”
