He brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter; for she had neither father nor mother. The maiden was fair and beautiful; and when her father and mother were dead, Mordecai took her for his own daughter.

Esther had not made known her people nor her relatives, because Mordecai had instructed her that she should not make it known.

Mordecai walked every day in front of the court of the women’s house, to find out how Esther was doing, and what would become of her.

Esther 2:11 Heb. to know the peace

καθ εκαστην δε ημεραν ο μαρδοχαιος περιεπατει κατα την αυλην την γυναικειαν επισκοπων τι εσθηρ συμβησεται

Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, came to go in to the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s eunuch, the keeper of the women, advised. Esther obtained favor in the sight of all those who looked at her.

εν δε τω αναπληρουσθαι τον χρονον εσθηρ της θυγατρος αμιναδαβ αδελφου πατρος μαρδοχαιου εισελθειν προς τον βασιλεα ουδεν ηθετησεν ων αυτη ενετειλατο ο ευνουχος ο φυλαξ των γυναικων ην γαρ εσθηρ ευρισκουσα χαριν παρα παντων των βλεποντων αυτην

When the virgins were gathered together the second time, Mordecai was sitting in the king’s gate.

Esther had not yet made known her relatives nor her people, as Mordecai had commanded her; for Esther obeyed Mordecai, like she did when she was brought up by him.

In those days, while Mordecai was sitting in the king’s gate, two of the king’s eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, who were doorkeepers, were angry, and sought to lay hands on the King Ahasuerus.

This thing became known to Mordecai, who informed Esther the queen; and Esther informed the king in Mordecai’s name.

And the thing H1697 was known H3045 (NiphImpf) to Mordecai, H4782 who told H5046 (HiphImpf) it unto Esther H635 the queen; H4436 and Esther H635 certified H559 (QalImpf) the king H4428 thereof in Mordecai’s H4782 name. H8034

All the king’s servants who were in the king’s gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai didn’t bow down or pay him homage.

And all the king’s H4428 servants, H5650 that were in the king’s H4428 gate, H8179 bowed, H3766 (QalActPtc) and reverenced H7812 (HithPtc) Haman: H2001 for the king H4428 had so commanded H6680 (PielPerf) concerning him. και παντες οι εν τη αυλη προσεκυνουν αυτω ουτως γαρ προσεταξεν ο βασιλευς ποιησαι ο δε μαρδοχαιος ου προσεκυνει αυτω

Then the king’s servants who were in the king’s gate said to Mordecai, “Why do you disobey the king’s commandment?”

Then the king’s H4428 servants, H5650 which were in the king’s H4428 gate, H8179 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Mordecai, H4782 Why transgressest H5674 (QalActPtc) thou the king’s H4428 commandment? H4687

Now it came to pass, when they spoke daily to him, and he didn’t listen to them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai’s reason would stand; for he had told them that he was a Jew.

Now it came to pass, when they spake H559 (QalInf) daily H3117 H3117 unto him, and he hearkened H8085 (QalPerf) not unto them, that they told H5046 (HiphImpf) Haman, H2001 to see H7200 (QalInf) whether Mordecai’s H4782 matters H1697 would stand: H5975 (QalImpf) for he had told H5046 (HiphPerf) them that he was a Jew. When Haman saw that Mordecai didn’t bow down nor pay him homage, Haman was full of wrath.

And when Haman H2001 saw H7200 (QalImpf) that Mordecai H4782 bowed H3766 (QalActPtc) not, nor did him reverence, H7812 (HithPtc) then was Haman H2001 full H4390 (NiphImpf) of wrath. H2534

και επιγνους αμαν οτι ου προσκυνει αυτω μαρδοχαιος εθυμωθη σφοδρα

But he scorned the thought of laying hands on Mordecai alone, for they had made known to him Mordecai’s people. Therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews who were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even Mordecai’s people.

και εβουλευσατο αφανισαι παντας τους υπο την αρταξερξου βασιλειαν ιουδαιους

Now when Mordecai found out all that was done, Mordecai tore his clothes and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the middle of the city, and wailed loudly and bitterly.

Esther’s maidens and her eunuchs came and told her this, and the queen was exceedingly grieved. She sent clothing to Mordecai, to replace his sackcloth, but he didn’t receive it.

So Esther’s H635 maids H5291 and her chamberlains^§ H5631 came H935 (QalImpf) and told H5046 (HiphImpf) it her. Then was the queen H4436 exceedingly H3966 grieved; H2342 (HippImpf) and she sent H7971 (QalImpf) raiment H899 to clothe H3847 (HiphInf) Mordecai, H4782 and to take away H5493 (HiphInf) his sackcloth H8242 from him: but he received H6901 (PielPerf) it not.

Esther 4:4 Heb. Eunuchs

και εισηλθον αι αβραι και οι ευνουχοι της βασιλισσης και ανηγγειλαν αυτη και εταραχθη ακουσασα το γεγονος και απεστειλεν στολισαι τον μαρδοχαιον και αφελεσθαι αυτου τον σακκον ο δε ουκ επεισθη

Then Esther called for Hathach, one of the king’s eunuchs, whom he had appointed to attend her, and commanded him to go to Mordecai, to find out what this was, and why it was.

Then called H7121 (QalImpf) Esther H635 for Hatach, H2047 one of the king’s H4428 chamberlains, H5631 whom he had appointed H5975 (HiphPerf) to attend H6440 upon her,^§ and gave him a commandment H6680 (PielImpf) to Mordecai, H4782 to know H3045 (QalInf) what it was, and why it was.

So Hathach went out to Mordecai, to the city square which was before the king’s gate.

So Hatach H2047 went forth H3318 (QalImpf) to Mordecai H4782 unto the street H7339 of the city, H5892 which was before H6440 the king’s H4428 gate. H8179

Mordecai told him of all that had happened to him, and the exact sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the destruction of the Jews.

And Mordecai H4782 told H5046 (HiphImpf) him of all that had happened H7136 (QalPerf) unto him, and of the sum H6575 of the money H3701 that Haman H2001 had promised H559 (QalPerf) to pay H8254 (QalInf) to the king’s H4428 treasuries H1595 for the Jews, H3064 to destroy H6 (PielInf) them.

ο δε μαρδοχαιος υπεδειξεν αυτω το γεγονος και την επαγγελιαν ην επηγγειλατο αμαν τω βασιλει εις την γαζαν ταλαντων μυριων ινα απολεση τους ιουδαιους

Hathach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

And Hatach H2047 came H935 (QalImpf) and told H5046 (HiphImpf) Esther H635 the words H1697 of Mordecai. H4782

εισελθων δε ο αχραθαιος ελαλησεν αυτη παντας τους λογους τουτους

Then Esther spoke to Hathach, and gave him a message to Mordecai:

Again Esther H635 spake H559 (QalImpf) unto Hatach, H2047 and gave him commandment H6680 (PielImpf) unto Mordecai; H4782

ειπεν δε εσθηρ προς αχραθαιον πορευθητι προς μαρδοχαιον και ειπον οτι

They told Esther’s words to Mordecai.

And they told H5046 (HiphImpf) to Mordecai H4782 Esther’s H635 words. H1697

και απηγγειλεν αχραθαιος μαρδοχαιω παντας τους λογους εσθηρ

Then Mordecai asked them to return this answer to Esther: “Don’t think to yourself that you will escape in the king’s house any more than all the Jews.

Then Mordecai H4782 commanded H559 (QalImpf) to answer H7725 (HiphInf) Esther, H635 Think H1819 (PielImpf) not with thyself H5315 that thou shalt escape H4422 (NiphInf) in the king’s H4428 house, H1004 more than all the Jews. H3064

και ειπεν μαρδοχαιος προς αχραθαιον πορευθητι και ειπον αυτη εσθηρ μη ειπης σεαυτη οτι σωθηση μονη εν τη βασιλεια παρα παντας τους ιουδαιους

Then Esther asked them to answer Mordecai,

Then Esther H635 bade H559 (QalImpf) them return H7725 (HiphInf) Mordecai H4782 this answer,

και εξαπεστειλεν εσθηρ τον ηκοντα προς αυτην προς μαρδοχαιον λεγουσα

So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.

So Mordecai H4782 went^§ his way, H5674 (QalImpf) and did H6213 (QalImpf) according to all that Esther H635 had commanded H6680 (PielPerf) him.

Esther 4:17 Heb. passed

και βαδισας μαρδοχαιος εποιησεν οσα ενετειλατο αυτω εσθηρ

Then Haman went out that day joyful and glad of heart, but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king’s gate, that he didn’t stand up nor move for him, he was filled with wrath against Mordecai.

Yet all this avails me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate.”

Yet all this availeth H7737 (QalActPtc) me nothing, so long as H6256 I see H7200 (QalActPtc) Mordecai H4782 the Jew H3064 sitting H3427 (QalActPtc) at the king’s H4428 gate. H8179

και ταυτα μοι ουκ αρεσκει οταν ιδω μαρδοχαιον τον ιουδαιον εν τη αυλη

Then Zeresh his wife and all his friends said to him, “Let a gallows be made fifty cubits° high, and in the morning speak to the king about hanging Mordecai on it. Then go in merrily with the king to the banquet.” This pleased Haman, so he had the gallows made.

Esther 5:14 A cubit is the length from the tip of the middle finger to the elbow on a man’s arm, or about 18 inches or 46 centimeters.

και ειπεν προς αυτον ζωσαρα η γυνη αυτου και οι φιλοι κοπητω σοι ξυλον πηχων πεντηκοντα ορθρου δε ειπον τω βασιλει και κρεμασθητω μαρδοχαιος επι του ξυλου συ δε εισελθε εις την δοχην συν τω βασιλει και ευφραινου και ηρεσεν το ρημα τω αμαν και ητοιμασθη το ξυλον

It was found written that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs, who were doorkeepers, who had tried to lay hands on the King Ahasuerus.

ευρεν δε τα γραμματα τα γραφεντα περι μαρδοχαιου ως απηγγειλεν τω βασιλει περι των δυο ευνουχων του βασιλεως εν τω φυλασσειν αυτους και ζητησαι επιβαλειν τας χειρας αρταξερξη

The king said, “What honor and dignity has been given to Mordecai for this?” Then the king’s servants who attended him said, “Nothing has been done for him.”

And the king H4428 said, H559 (QalImpf) What honour H3366 and dignity H1420 hath been done H6213 (NiphPerf) to Mordecai H4782 for this? Then said H559 (QalImpf) the king’s H4428 servants H5288 that ministered H8334 (PielPtc) unto him, There is nothing H1697 done H6213 (NiphPerf) for him.

ειπεν δε ο βασιλευς τινα δοξαν η χαριν εποιησαμεν τω μαρδοχαιω και ειπαν οι διακονοι του βασιλεως ουκ εποιησας αυτω ουδεν

The king said, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman had come into the outer court of the king’s house, to speak to the king about hanging Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.

And the king H4428 said, H559 (QalImpf) Who is in the court? H2691 Now Haman H2001 was come H935 (QalPerf) into the outward H2435 court H2691 of the king’s H4428 house, H1004 to speak H559 (QalInf) unto the king H4428 to hang H8518 (QalInf) Mordecai H4782 on the gallows H6086 that he had prepared H3559 (HiphPerf) for him.

εν δε τω πυνθανεσθαι τον βασιλεα περι της ευνοιας μαρδοχαιου ιδου αμαν εν τη αυλη ειπεν δε ο βασιλευς τις εν τη αυλη ο δε αμαν εισηλθεν ειπειν τω βασιλει κρεμασαι τον μαρδοχαιον επι τω ξυλω ω ητοιμασεν

Then the king said to Haman, “Hurry and take the clothing and the horse, as you have said, and do this for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Let nothing fail of all that you have spoken.”

Esther 6:10 Heb. suffer not a whit to fail

ειπεν δε ο βασιλευς τω αμαν καθως ελαλησας ουτως ποιησον τω μαρδοχαιω τω ιουδαιω τω θεραπευοντι εν τη αυλη και μη παραπεσατω σου λογος ων ελαλησας

Then Haman took the clothing and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and had him ride through the city square, and proclaimed before him, “Thus it shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!”

ελαβεν δε αμαν την στολην και τον ιππον και εστολισεν τον μαρδοχαιον και ανεβιβασεν αυτον επι τον ιππον και διηλθεν δια της πλατειας της πολεως και εκηρυσσεν λεγων ουτως εσται παντι ανθρωπω ον ο βασιλευς θελει δοξασαι

Mordecai came back to the king’s gate, but Haman hurried to his house, mourning and having his head covered.

And Mordecai H4782 came again H7725 (QalImpf) to the king’s H4428 gate. H8179 But Haman H2001 hasted H1765 (NiphPerf) to his house H1004 mourning, H57 and having his head H7218 covered. H2645 (QalActPtc)

επεστρεψεν δε ο μαρδοχαιος εις την αυλην αμαν δε υπεστρεψεν εις τα ιδια λυπουμενος κατα κεφαλης
