εστω ο ανθρωπος εκεινος ως αι πολεις ας κατεστρεψεν κυριος εν θυμω και ου μετεμεληθη ακουσατω κραυγης το πρωι και αλαλαγμου μεσημβριας

‘Yahweh, the God of Israel says, “Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which you fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans who besiege you outside the walls; and I will gather them into the middle of this city.

Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 God H430 of Israel; H3478 Behold, I will turn back H5437 (HiphPtc) the weapons H3627 of war H4421 that are in your hands, H3027 wherewith ye fight H3898 (NiphPtc) against the king H4428 of Babylon, H894 and against the Chaldeans, H3778 which besiege H6696 (QalActPtc) you without H2351 the walls, H2346 and I will assemble H622 (QalPerf) them into the midst H8432 of this city. I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and animal. They will die of a great pestilence.

και παταξω παντας τους κατοικουντας εν τη πολει ταυτη τους ανθρωπους και τα κτηνη εν θανατω μεγαλω και αποθανουνται

Afterward,” says Yahweh, “I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, his servants, and the people, even those who are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life. He will strike them with the edge of the sword. He will not spare them, have pity, or have mercy.” ’

και μετα ταυτα ουτως λεγει κυριος δωσω τον σεδεκιαν βασιλεα ιουδα και τους παιδας αυτου και τον λαον τον καταλειφθεντα εν τη πολει ταυτη απο του θανατου και απο του λιμου και απο της μαχαιρας εις χειρας εχθρων αυτων των ζητουντων τας ψυχας αυτων και κατακοψουσιν αυτους εν στοματι μαχαιρας ου φεισομαι επ αυτοις και ου μη οικτιρησω αυτους

He who remains in this city will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, but he who goes out and passes over to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he will live, and he will escape with his life.

He that abideth H3427 (QalActPtc) in this city H5892 shall die H4191 (QalImpf) by the sword, H2719 and by the famine, H7458 and by the pestilence: H1698 but he that goeth out, H3318 (QalActPtc) and falleth H5307 (QalPerf) to the Chaldeans H3778 that besiege H6696 (QalActPtc) you, he shall live, H2421 (QalPerf) (Qere) H2421 (QalImpf) and his life H5315 shall be unto him for a prey. For I have set my face on this city for evil, and not for good,” says Yahweh. “It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.” ’

For I have set H7760 (QalPerf) my face H6440 against this city H5892 for evil, H7451 and not for good, H2896 saith H5002 (QalPasPtc) the Lord: H3068 it shall be given H5414 (NiphImpf) into the hand H3027 of the king H4428 of Babylon, H894 and he shall burn H8313 (QalPerf) it with fire. H784

διοτι εστηρικα το προσωπον μου επι την πολιν ταυτην εις κακα και ουκ εις αγαθα εις χειρας βασιλεως βαβυλωνος παραδοθησεται και κατακαυσει αυτην εν πυρι

For Yahweh says concerning the house of the king of Judah: “You are Gilead to me, the head of Lebanon. Yet surely I will make you a wilderness, cities which are not inhabited.

For thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 unto the king’s H4428 house H1004 of Judah; H3063 Thou art Gilead H1568 unto me, and the head H7218 of Lebanon: H3844 yet surely I will make H7896 (QalImpf) thee a wilderness, H4057 and cities H5892 which are not inhabited. οτι ταδε λεγει κυριος κατα του οικου βασιλεως ιουδα γαλααδ συ μοι αρχη του λιβανου εαν μη θω σε εις ερημον πολεις μη κατοικηθησομενας

“Many nations will pass by this city, and they will each ask his neighbor, ‘Why has Yahweh done this to this great city?’

And many H7227 nations H1471 shall pass H5674 (QalPerf) by this city, H5892 and they shall say H559 (QalPerf) every man H376 to his neighbour, H7453 Wherefore hath the Lord H3068 done H6213 (QalPerf) thus unto this great H1419 city? H5892

και διελευσονται εθνη δια της πολεως ταυτης και ερουσιν εκαστος προς τον πλησιον αυτου δια τι εποιησεν κυριος ουτως τη πολει τη μεγαλη ταυτη

therefore behold, I will utterly forget you, and I will cast you off with the city that I gave to you and to your fathers, away from my presence.

Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, with its kings and its princes, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, a hissing, and a curse, as it is today;

For, behold, I begin to work evil at the city which is called by my name; and should you be utterly unpunished? You will not be unpunished; for I will call for a sword on all the inhabitants of the earth, says Yahweh of Armies.” ’

For, lo, I begin H2490 (HiphPtc) to bring evil H7489 (HiphInf) on the city H5892 which is called H7121 (NiphPerf) by my name,^§ H8034 and should ye be utterly H5352 (NiphInf) unpunished? H5352 (NiphImpf) Ye shall not be unpunished: H5352 (NiphInf) for I will call H7121 (QalActPtc) for a sword H2719 upon all the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of the earth, H776 saith H5002 (QalPasPtc) the Lord H3068 of hosts. Jeremiah 25:29 Heb. upon which my Name is called

^[32:29] οτι εν πολει εν η ωνομασθη το ονομα μου επ αυτην εγω αρχομαι κακωσαι και υμεις καθαρσει ου μη καθαρισθητε οτι μαχαιραν εγω καλω επι τους καθημενους επι της γης

“Yahweh says: ‘Stand in the court of Yahweh’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah which come to worship in Yahweh’s house, all the words that I command you to speak to them. Don’t omit a word.

then I will make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.’ ”

Why have you prophesied in Yahweh’s name, saying, ‘This house will be like Shiloh, and this city will be desolate, without inhabitant’?” All the people were crowded around Jeremiah in Yahweh’s house.

Why hast thou prophesied H5012 (NiphPerf) in the name H8034 of the Lord, H3068 saying, H559 (QalInf) This house H1004 shall be like Shiloh, H7887 and this city H5892 shall be desolate H2717 (QalImpf) without an inhabitant? H3427 (QalActPtc) And all the people H5971 were gathered H6950 (NiphImpf) against Jeremiah H3414 in the house H1004 of the Lord. H3068

^[33:9] οτι επροφητευσας τω ονοματι κυριου λεγων ωσπερ σηλωμ εσται ο οικος ουτος και η πολις αυτη ερημωθησεται απο κατοικουντων και εξεκκλησιασθη πας ο λαος επι ιερεμιαν εν οικω κυριου

Then the priests and the prophets spoke to the princes and to all the people, saying, “This man is worthy of death, for he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your ears.”

Jeremiah 26:11 Heb. The judgment of death is for this man

Then Jeremiah spoke to all the princes and to all the people, saying, “Yahweh sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard.

Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city, and on its inhabitants; for in truth Yahweh has sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”

But know H3045 (QalImpf) ye for certain, H3045 (QalInf) that if ye put me to death, H4191 (HiphPtc) ye shall surely bring H5414 (QalActPtc) innocent H5355 blood H1818 upon yourselves, and upon this city, H5892 and upon the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) thereof: for of a truth H571 the Lord H3068 hath sent H7971 (QalPerf) me unto you to speak H1696 (PielInf) all these words H1697 in your ears. ^[33:15] αλλ η γνοντες γνωσεσθε οτι ει αναιρειτε με αιμα αθωον διδοτε εφ υμας και επι την πολιν ταυτην και επι τους κατοικουντας εν αυτη οτι εν αληθεια απεσταλκεν με κυριος προς υμας λαλησαι εις τα ωτα υμων παντας τους λογους τουτους

There was also a man who prophesied in Yahweh’s name, Uriah the son of Shemaiah of Kiriath Jearim; and he prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah.

And there was also a man H376 that prophesied H5012 (HithPtc) in the name H8034 of the Lord, H3068 Urijah H223 the son H1121 of Shemaiah H8098 of Kirjath-jearim, H7157 who prophesied H5012 (NiphImpf) against this city H5892 and against this land H776 according to all the words H1697 of Jeremiah: H3414

Don’t listen to them. Serve the king of Babylon, and live. Why should this city become a desolation?

Hearken H8085 (QalImpf) not unto them; serve H5647 (QalImpv) the king H4428 of Babylon, H894 and live: H2421 (QalImpv) wherefore should this city H5892 be laid waste? H2723

For Yahweh of Armies says concerning the pillars, concerning the sea, concerning the bases, and concerning the rest of the vessels that are left in this city,

For thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 of hosts H6635 concerning the pillars, H5982 and concerning the sea, H3220 and concerning the bases, H4350 and concerning the residue H3499 of the vessels H3627 that remain H3498 (NiphPtc) in this city, H5892

^[34:19] οτι ουτως ειπεν κυριος και των επιλοιπων σκευων

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to Yahweh for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

Yahweh says concerning the king who sits on David’s throne, and concerning all the people who dwell in this city, your brothers who haven’t gone with you into captivity,

know that thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 of the king H4428 that sitteth H3427 (QalActPtc) upon the throne H3678 of David, H1732 and of all the people H5971 that dwelleth H3427 (QalActPtc) in this city, H5892 and of your brethren H251 that are not gone forth H3318 (QalPerf) with you into captivity; H1473

Yahweh says: “Behold, I will reverse the captivity of Jacob’s tents, and have compassion on his dwelling places. The city will be built on its own hill, and the palace will be inhabited in its own place.

Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord; H3068 Behold, I will bring again H7725 (QalActPtc) the captivity H7622 of Jacob’s H3290 tents, H168 and have mercy H7355 (PielImpf) on his dwellingplaces; H4908 and the city H5892 shall be builded H1129 (NiphPerf) upon her own heap,^§ H8510 and the palace H759 shall remain H3427 (QalImpf) after the manner H4941 thereof.

Jeremiah 30:18 Or, little hill

^[38:21] στησον σεαυτην σιων ποιησον τιμωριαν δος καρδιαν σου εις τους ωμους οδον ην επορευθης αποστραφητι παρθενος ισραηλ αποστραφητι εις τας πολεις σου πενθουσα

Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Yet again they will use this speech in the land of Judah and in its cities, when I reverse their captivity: ‘Yahweh bless you, habitation of righteousness, mountain of holiness.’

Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 of hosts, H6635 the God H430 of Israel; H3478 As yet they shall use H559 (QalImpf) this speech H1697 in the land H776 of Judah H3063 and in the cities H5892 thereof, when I shall bring again H7725 (QalInf) their captivity; H7622 The Lord H3068 bless H1288 (PielImpf) thee, O habitation H5116 of justice, H6664 and mountain H2022 of holiness. ^[38:23] ουτως ειπεν κυριος ετι ερουσιν τον λογον τουτον εν γη ιουδα και εν πολεσιν αυτου οταν αποστρεψω την αιχμαλωσιαν αυτου ευλογημενος κυριος επι δικαιον ορος το αγιον αυτου

Judah and all its cities will dwell therein together, the farmers, and those who go about with flocks.

And there shall dwell H3427 (QalPerf) in Judah H3063 itself, and in all the cities H5892 thereof together, H3162 husbandmen, H406 and they that go forth H5265 (QalPerf) with flocks. H5739

^[38:24] και ενοικουντες εν ταις πολεσιν ιουδα και εν παση τη γη αυτου αμα γεωργω και αρθησεται εν ποιμνιω

“Behold, the days come,” says Yahweh, “that the city will be built to Yahweh from the tower of Hananel to the gate of the corner.

For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, “Why do you prophesy, and say, ‘Yahweh says, “Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will take it;

For Zedekiah H6667 king H4428 of Judah H3063 had shut him up, H3607 (QalPerf) saying, H559 (QalInf) Wherefore dost thou prophesy, H5012 (NiphPtc) and say, H559 (QalInf) Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord, H3068 Behold, I will give H5414 (QalActPtc) this city H5892 into the hand H3027 of the king H4428 of Babylon, H894 and he shall take H3920 (QalPerf) it;

^[39:3] εν η κατεκλεισεν αυτον ο βασιλευς σεδεκιας λεγων δια τι συ προφητευεις λεγων ουτως ειπεν κυριος ιδου εγω διδωμι την πολιν ταυτην εν χερσιν βασιλεως βαβυλωνος και λημψεται αυτην

“Behold, siege ramps have been built against the city to take it. The city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans who fight against it, because of the sword, of the famine, and of the pestilence. What you have spoken has happened. Behold, you see it.

^[39:24] ιδου οχλος ηκει εις την πολιν ταυτην συλλαβειν αυτην και η πολις εδοθη εις χειρας χαλδαιων των πολεμουντων αυτην απο προσωπου μαχαιρας και του λιμου ως ελαλησας ουτως εγενετο

You have said to me, Lord Yahweh, ‘Buy the field for money, and call witnesses;’ whereas the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.”

And thou hast said H559 (QalPerf) unto me, O Lord H136 God, H3069 Buy H7069 (QalImpv) thee the field H7704 for money, H3701 and take H5749 (HiphImpv) witnesses; H5707 for the city H5892 is given H5414 (NiphPerf) into the hand H3027 of the Chaldeans. H3778

^[39:25] και συ λεγεις προς με κτησαι σεαυτω αγρον αργυριου και εγραψα βιβλιον και εσφραγισαμην και επεμαρτυραμην μαρτυρας και η πολις εδοθη εις χειρας χαλδαιων

Therefore Yahweh says: Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will take it.

Therefore thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord; H3068 Behold, I will give H5414 (QalActPtc) this city H5892 into the hand H3027 of the Chaldeans, H3778 and into the hand H3027 of Nebuchadrezzar H5019 king H4428 of Babylon, H894 and he shall take H3920 (QalPerf) it:

^[39:28] δια τουτο ουτως ειπεν κυριος ο θεος ισραηλ δοθεισα παραδοθησεται η πολις αυτη εις χειρας βασιλεως βαβυλωνος και λημψεται αυτην

The Chaldeans, who fight against this city, will come and set this city on fire, and burn it with the houses on whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal, and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger.

and the Chaldeans, H3778 that fight H3898 (NiphPtc) against this city, H5892 shall come H935 (QalPerf) and set H3341 (HiphPerf) fire H784 on this city, H5892 and burn H8313 (QalPerf) it with the houses, H1004 upon whose roofs H1406 they have offered incense H6999 (PielPerf) unto Baal, H1168 and poured out H5258 (HiphPerf) drink offerings H5262 unto other H312 gods, H430 to provoke me to anger. ^[39:29] και ηξουσιν οι χαλδαιοι πολεμουντες επι την πολιν ταυτην και καυσουσιν την πολιν ταυτην εν πυρι και κατακαυσουσιν τας οικιας εν αις εθυμιωσαν επι των δωματων αυτων τη βααλ και εσπενδον σπονδας θεοις ετεροις προς το παραπικραναι με

For this city has been to me a provocation of my anger and of my wrath from the day that they built it even to this day, so that I should remove it from before my face,

Men will buy fields for money, sign the deeds, seal them, and call witnesses, in the land of Benjamin, and in the places around Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the South; for I will cause their captivity to be reversed,” says Yahweh.

Men shall buy H7069 (QalImpf) fields H7704 for money, H3701 and subscribe H3789 (QalInf) evidences, H5612 and seal H2856 (QalInf) them, and take H5749 (HiphInf) witnesses H5707 in the land H776 of Benjamin, H1144 and in the places about H5439 Jerusalem, H3389 and in the cities H5892 of Judah, H3063 and in the cities H5892 of the mountains, H2022 and in the cities H5892 of the valley, H8219 and in the cities H5892 of the south: H5045 for I will cause their captivity H7622 to return, H7725 (HiphImpf) saith H5002 (QalPasPtc) the Lord. For Yahweh, the God of Israel, says concerning the houses of this city and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are broken down to make a defense against the mounds and against the sword:

‘While men come to fight with the Chaldeans, and to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have killed in my anger and in my wrath, and for all whose wickedness I have hidden my face from this city,

Yahweh says: “Yet again there will be heard in this place, about which you say, ‘It is waste, without man and without animal, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man and without inhabitant and without animal,’

Yahweh of Armies says: “Yet again there will be in this place, which is waste, without man and without animal, and in all its cities, a habitation of shepherds causing their flocks to lie down.

Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 of hosts; H6635 Again in this place, H4725 which is desolate H2720 without man H120 and without beast, H929 and in all the cities H5892 thereof, shall be an habitation H5116 of shepherds H7462 (QalActPtc) causing their flocks H6629 to lie down. In the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the lowland, in the cities of the South, in the land of Benjamin, in the places around Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, the flocks will again pass under the hands of him who counts them,” says Yahweh.

The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, with all his army, all the kingdoms of the earth that were under his dominion, and all the peoples, were fighting against Jerusalem and against all its cities, saying:

when the king of Babylon’s army was fighting against Jerusalem and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish and against Azekah; for these alone remained of the cities of Judah as fortified cities.

Behold, I will command,” says Yahweh, “and cause them to return to this city. They will fight against it, take it, and burn it with fire. I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.”

Therefore you go, and read from the scroll which you have written from my mouth, Yahweh’s words, in the ears of the people in Yahweh’s house on the fast day. Also you shall read them in the ears of all Judah who come out of their cities.

Now in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem, proclaimed a fast before Yahweh.

And it came to pass in the fifth H2549 year H8141 of Jehoiakim H3079 the son H1121 of Josiah H2977 king H4428 of Judah, H3063 in the ninth H8671 month, H2320 that they proclaimed H7121 (QalPerf) a fast H6685 before H6440 the Lord H3068 to all the people H5971 in Jerusalem, H3389 and to all the people H5971 that came H935 (QalActPtc) from the cities H5892 of Judah H3063 unto Jerusalem. The Chaldeans will come again, and fight against this city. They will take it and burn it with fire.” ’

For though you had struck the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and only wounded men remained among them, they would each rise up in his tent and burn this city with fire.’ ”

Then Zedekiah the king commanded, and they committed Jeremiah into the court of the guard. They gave him daily a loaf of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

“Yahweh says, ‘He who remains in this city will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, but he who goes out to the Chaldeans will live. He will escape with his life and he will live.’
