The Philistines took God’s ark, and brought it into the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon.

and the Philistines take the ark of God and bring it into the house of Dagon, and set it near Dagon.

Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagon’s house step on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.

therefore the priests of Dagon, and all those coming into the house of Dagon, tread not on the threshold of Dagon, in Ashdod, till this day.

So they sent God’s ark to Ekron. As God’s ark came to Ekron, the Ekronites cried out, saying, “They have brought the ark of the God of Israel here to us, to kill us and our people.”

And they send the ark of God to Ekron, and it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of God to Ekron, that the Ekronites cry out, saying, ‘They have brought round unto us the ark of the God of Israel, to put us to death-and our people.’

The cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and stood there, where there was a great stone. Then they split the wood of the cart and offered up the cows for a burnt offering to Yahweh.

And the cart hath come in unto the field of Joshua the Beth-Shemeshite, and standeth there, and there is a great stone, and they cleave the wood of the cart, and the kine they have caused to ascend-a burnt-offering to Jehovah.

The men of Kiriath Jearim came and took Yahweh’s ark, and brought it into Abinadab’s house on the hill, and consecrated Eleazar his son to keep Yahweh’s ark.

And the men H582 of Kirjathjearim H7157 came, H935 (QalImpf) and fetched up H5927 (HiphImpf) the ark H727 of the Lord, H3068 and brought H935 (HiphImpf) it into the house H1004 of Abinadab H41 in the hill, H1389 and sanctified H6942 (PielPerf) Eleazar H499 his son H1121 to keep H8104 (QalInf) the ark H727 of the Lord. H3068

And the men of Kirjath-Jearim come and bring up the ark of Jehovah, and bring it in unto the house of Abinadab, in the height, and Eleazar his son they have sanctified to keep the ark of Jehovah.

So the Philistines were subdued, and they stopped coming within the border of Israel. Yahweh’s hand was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

So the Philistines H6430 were subdued, H3665 (NiphImpf) and they came H935 (QalInf) no more H3254 (QalPerf) into the coast H1366 of Israel: H3478 and the hand H3027 of the Lord H3068 was against the Philistines H6430 all the days H3117 of Samuel. H8050

And the Philistines are humbled, and have not added any more to come into the border of Israel, and the hand of Jehovah is on the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together and came to Samuel to Ramah.

Then all the elders H2205 of Israel H3478 gathered themselves together, H6908 (HithImpf) and came H935 (QalImpf) to Samuel H8050 unto Ramah, H7414

And all the elders of Israel gather themselves together, and come in unto Samuel to Ramath,

When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come! Let’s return, lest my father stop caring about the donkeys and be anxious for us.”

[And] when they were come H935 (QalPerf) to the land H776 of Zuph, H6689 Saul H7586 said H559 (QalPerf) to his servant H5288 that [was] with him, Come, H3212 (QalImpv) and let us return; H7725 (QalImpf) lest my father H1 leave H2308 (QalImpf) [caring] for the asses, H860 and take thought H1672 (QalPerf) for us.

They have come in unto the land of Zuph, and Saul hath said to his young man who is with him, ‘Come, and we turn back, lest my father leave off from the asses, and hath been sorrowful for us.’

The servant said to him, “Behold now, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor. All that he says surely happens. Now let’s go there. Perhaps he can tell us which way to go.”

And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Behold now, [there is] in this city H5892 a man H376 of God, H430 and [he is] an honourable H3513 (NiphPtc) man; H376 all that he saith H1696 (PielImpf) cometh H935 (QalImpf) surely to pass: H935 (QalInf) now let us go H3212 (QalImpf) thither; peradventure he can shew H5046 (HiphImpf) us our way H1870 that we should go. And he saith to him, ‘Lo, I pray thee, a man of God is in this city, and the man is honoured; all that he speaketh doth certainly come; now, we go there, it may be he doth declare to us our way on which we have gone.’

Then Saul said to his servant, “But behold, if we go, what should we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our sacks, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”

Then said H559 (QalImpf) Saul H7586 to his servant, H5288 But, behold, [if] we go, H3212 (QalImpf) what shall we bring H935 (HiphImpf) the man? And Saul saith to his young man, ‘And lo, we go, and what do we bring in to the man? for the bread hath gone from our vessels, and a present there is not to bring in to the man of God-what is with us?’

They answered them and said, “He is. Behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he has come today into the city; for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place.

And they answered H6030 (QalImpf) them, and said, H559 (QalImpf) He is; H3426 behold, [he is] before H6440 you: make haste H4116 (PielImpv) now, for he came H935 (QalPerf) to day H3117 to the city; H5892 for [there is] a sacrifice H2077 of the people H5971 to day H3117 in the high place: H1116

And they answer them and say, ‘He is; lo, before thee! haste, now, for to-day he hath come in to the city, for the people hath a stated sacrifice in a high place.

As soon as you have come into the city, you will immediately find him before he goes up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he comes, because he blesses the sacrifice. Afterwards those who are invited eat. Now therefore go up; for at this time you will find him.”

At your going in to the city so ye do find him, before he doth go up in to the high place to eat; for the people do not eat till his coming, for he doth bless the sacrifice; afterwards they eat, who are called, and now, go up, for at this time ye find him.’

They went up to the city. As they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them to go up to the high place.

And they went up H5927 (QalImpf) into H8432 the city: H5892 [and] when they were come H935 (QalActPtc) into the city, H5892 behold, Samuel H8050 came out H3318 (QalActPtc) against H7125 (QalInf) them, for to go up H5927 (QalInf) to the high place. H1116

And they go up in to the city; they are coming in to the midst of the city, and lo, Samuel is coming out to meet them, to go up to the high place;

Now Yahweh had revealed to Samuel a day before Saul came, saying,

Now the Lord H3068 had told H1540 (QalPerf) Samuel H8050 in his ear H241 a H259 day H3117 before H6440 Saul H7586 came, H935 (QalInf) saying, H559 (QalInf)

and Jehovah had uncovered the ear of Samuel one day before the coming of Saul, saying,

“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He will save my people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked upon my people, because their cry has come to me.”

To morrow H4279 about this time H6256 I will send H7971 (QalImpf) thee a man H376 out of the land H776 of Benjamin, H1144 and thou shalt anoint H4886 (QalPerf) him [to be] captain H5057 over my people H5971 Israel, H3478 that he may save H3467 (HiphPerf) my people H5971 out of the hand H3027 of the Philistines: H6430 for I have looked H7200 (QalPerf) upon my people, H5971 because their cry H6818 is come H935 (QalPerf) unto me.

‘At this time tomorrow, I send unto thee a man out of the land of Benjamin-and thou hast anointed him for leader over My people Israel, and he hath saved My people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have seen My people, for its cry hath come in unto Me.’

Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the guest room, and made them sit in the best place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons.

And Samuel H8050 took H3947 (QalImpf) Saul H7586 and his servant, H5288 and brought H935 (HiphImpf) them into the parlour, H3957 and made them sit H5414 (QalImpf) in the chiefest H7218 place H4725 among them that were bidden, H7121 (QalPasPtc) which [were] about thirty H7970 persons. H376

And Samuel taketh Saul, and his young man, and bringeth them in to the chamber, and giveth to them a place at the head of those called; and they are about thirty men.

“Then you will go on forward from there, and you will come to the oak of Tabor. Three men will meet you there going up to God to Bethel: one carrying three young goats, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a container of wine.

Then shalt thou go on H2498 (QalPerf) forward H1973 from thence, and thou shalt come H935 (QalPerf) to the plain H436 of Tabor, H8396 and there shall meet H4672 (QalPerf) thee three H7969 men H582 going up H5927 (QalActPtc) to God H430 to Bethel, H1008 one H259 carrying H5375 (QalActPtc) three H7969 kids, H1423 and another H259 carrying H5375 (QalActPtc) three H7969 loaves H3603 of bread, H3899 and another H259 carrying H5375 (QalActPtc) a bottle H5035 of wine: H3196

‘And thou hast passed on thence, and beyond, and hast come in unto the oak of Tabor, and found thee there have three men going up unto God to Beth-El, one bearing three kids, and one bearing three cakes of bread, and one bearing a bottle of wine,

“After that you will come to the hill of God, where the garrison of the Philistines is; and it will happen, when you have come there to the city, that you will meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a lute, a tambourine, a pipe, and a harp before them; and they will be prophesying.

After H310 that thou shalt come H935 (QalImpf) to the hill H1389 of God, H430 where [is] the garrison H5333 of the Philistines: H6430 and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither H935 (QalInf) to the city, H5892 that thou shalt meet H6293 (QalPerf) a company H2256 of prophets H5030 coming down H3381 (QalActPtc) from the high place H1116 with a psaltery, H5035 and a tabret, H8596 and a pipe, H2485 and a harp, H3658 before H6440 them; and they shall prophesy: H5012 (HithPtc)

‘Afterwards thou dost come unto the hill of God, where the garrison of the Philistines is, and it cometh to pass, at thy coming in thither to the city, that thou hast met a band of prophets coming down from the high place, and before them psaltery, and tabret, and pipe, and harp, and they are prophesying;

Let it be, when these signs have come to you, that you do what is appropriate for the occasion; for God is with you.

And let it be, when these signs H226 are come H935 (QalImpf) unto thee, [that] thou do H6213 (QalImpv) as occasion H4672 (QalImpf) serve H3027 thee; for God H430 [is] with thee.

and it hath been, when these signs come to thee-do for thyself as thy hand findeth, for God is with thee.

“Go down ahead of me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings. Wait seven days, until I come to you and show you what you are to do.”

And thou shalt go down H3381 (QalPerf) before H6440 me to Gilgal; H1537 and, behold, I will come down H3381 (QalActPtc) unto thee, to offer H5927 (HiphInf) burnt offerings, H5930 [and] to sacrifice H2076 (QalInf) sacrifices H2077 of peace offerings: H8002 seven H7651 days H3117 shalt thou tarry, H3176 (HiphImpf) till I come H935 (QalInf) to thee, and shew H3045 (HiphPerf) thee what thou shalt do. ‘And thou hast gone down before me to Gilgal, and lo, I am going down unto thee, to cause to ascend burnt-offerings, to sacrifice sacrifices of peace-offerings; seven days thou dost wait till my coming in unto thee, and I have made known to thee that which thou dost do.’

It was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart; and all those signs happened that day.

And it was [so], that when he had turned H6437 (HiphInf) his back H7926 to go H3212 (QalInf) from Samuel, H8050 God H430 gave H2015 (QalImpf) him another H312 heart: H3820 and all those signs H226 came H935 (QalImpf) to pass that day. H3117

And it hath been, at his turning his shoulder to go from Samuel, that God turneth to him another heart, and all these signs come on that day,

When they came there to the hill, behold, a band of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came mightily on him, and he prophesied among them.

And when they came H935 (QalImpf) thither to the hill, H1389 behold, a company H2256 of prophets H5030 met H7125 (QalInf) him; and the Spirit H7307 of God H430 came H6743 (QalImpf) upon him, and he prophesied H5012 (HithImpf) among H8432 them.

and they come in thither to the height, and lo, a band of prophets-to meet him, and prosper over him doth the Spirit of God, and he prophesieth in their midst.

When he had finished prophesying, he came to the high place.

And when he had made an end H3615 (PielImpf) of prophesying, H5012 (HithInf) he came H935 (QalImpf) to the high place. H1116

And he ceaseth from prophesying, and cometh in to the high place,

Saul’s uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” He said, “To seek the donkeys. When we saw that they were not found, we came to Samuel.”

And Saul’s H7586 uncle H1730 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him and to his servant, H5288 Whither H575 went H1980 (QalPerf) ye? And he said, H559 (QalImpf) To seek H1245 (PielInf) the asses: H860 and when we saw H7200 (QalImpf) that [they were] no where, H369 we came H935 (QalImpf) to Samuel. H8050

and the uncle of Saul saith unto him, and unto his young man, ‘Whither went ye?’ and he saith, ‘To seek the asses; and we see that they are not, and we come in unto Samuel.’

Therefore they asked of Yahweh further, “Is there yet a man to come here?” Yahweh answered, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.”

Therefore they enquired H7592 (QalImpf) of the Lord H3068 further, if the man H376 should yet come H935 (QalPerf) thither. H1988 And the Lord H3068 answered, H559 (QalImpf) Behold, he hath hid H2244 (NiphPtc) himself among the stuff. H3627

And they ask again at Jehovah, ‘Hath the man yet come hither?’ and Jehovah saith, ‘Lo, he hath been hidden near the vessels.’

But certain worthless fellows said, “How could this man save us?” They despised him, and brought him no tribute. But he held his peace.

But the children H1121 of Belial H1100 said, H559 (QalPerf) How shall this man save H3467 (HiphImpf) us? And they despised H959 (QalImpf) him, and brought H935 (HiphPerf) him no presents. H4503 But he held his peace. H2790 (HiphPtc)

and the sons of worthlessness have said, ‘What! this one doth save us!’ and they despise him, and have not brought to him a present; and he is as one deaf.

Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people, then all the people lifted up their voice and wept.

Then came H935 (QalImpf) the messengers H4397 to Gibeah H1390 of Saul, H7586 and told H1696 (PielImpf) the tidings H1697 in the ears H241 of the people: H5971 and all the people H5971 lifted up H5375 (QalImpf) their voices, H6963 and wept. H1058 (QalImpf)

And the messengers come to Gibeah of Saul, and speak the words in the ears of the people, and all the people lift up their voice and weep;

Behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, “What ails the people that they weep?” They told him the words of the men of Jabesh.

And, behold, Saul H7586 came H935 (QalPerf) after H310 the herd H1241 out of the field; H7704 and Saul H7586 said, H559 (QalImpf) What [aileth] the people H5971 that they weep? H1058 (QalImpf) And they told H5608 (PielImpf) him the tidings H1697 of the men H582 of Jabesh. H3003

and lo, Saul hath come after the herd out of the field, and Saul saith, ‘What-to the people, that they weep?’ and they recount to him the words of the men of Jabesh.

They said to the messengers who came, “Tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will be rescued.’ ” The messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

And they said H559 (QalImpf) unto the messengers H4397 that came, H935 (QalActPtc) Thus shall ye say H559 (QalImpf) unto the men H376 of Jabeshgilead, H3003 H1568 To morrow, H4279 by [that time] the sun H8121 be hot, H2527 ye shall have help. And they say to the messengers who are coming, ‘Thus do ye say to the men of Jabesh-Gilead: To-morrow ye have safety-by the heat of the sun;’ and the messengers come and declare to the men of Jabesh, and they rejoice;

On the next day, Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the middle of the camp in the morning watch, and struck the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who remained were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

And it was [so] on the morrow, H4283 that Saul H7586 put H7760 (QalImpf) the people H5971 in three H7969 companies; H7218 and they came H935 (QalImpf) into the midst H8432 of the host H4264 in the morning H1242 watch, H821 and slew H5221 (HiphImpf) the Ammonites H5983 until the heat H2527 of the day: H3117 and it came to pass, that they which remained H7604 (NiphPtc) were scattered, H6327 (QalImpf) so that two H8147 of them were not left H7604 (NiphPerf) together. H3162

And it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that Saul putteth the people in three detachments, and they come into the midst of the camp in the morning-watch, and smite Ammon till the heat of the day; and it cometh to pass that those left are scattered, and there have not been left of them two together.

“When Jacob had come into Egypt, and your fathers cried to Yahweh, then Yahweh sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt, and made them to dwell in this place.

‘When Jacob hath come in to Egypt, and your fathers cry unto Jehovah, then Jehovah sendeth Moses and Aaron, and they bring out your fathers from Egypt, and cause them to dwell in this place,

“When you saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when Yahweh your God was your king.

And when ye saw H7200 (QalImpf) that Nahash H5176 the king H4428 of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 came H935 (QalPerf) against you, ye said H559 (QalImpf) unto me, Nay; but a king H4428 shall reign H4427 (QalImpf) over us: when the Lord H3068 your God H430 [was] your king. H4428

‘And ye see that Nahash king of the Bene-Ammon hath come against you, and ye say to me, Nay, but a king doth reign over us; and Jehovah your God is your king!

He stayed seven days, according to the time set by Samuel; but Samuel didn’t come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him.

And he tarried H3176 (HiphImpf) (Qere) H3176 (NiphImpf) seven H7651 days, H3117 according to the set time H4150 that Samuel H8050 [had appointed]: but Samuel H8050 came H935 (QalPerf) not to Gilgal; H1537 and the people H5971 were scattered H6327 (HiphImpf) from him.

And he waiteth seven days, according to the appointment with Samuel, and Samuel hath not come to Gilgal, and the people are scattered from off him.

It came to pass that as soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.

And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end H3615 (PielInf) of offering H5927 (HiphInf) the burnt offering, H5930 behold, Samuel H8050 came; H935 (QalActPtc) and Saul H7586 went out H3318 (QalImpf) to meet H7125 (QalInf) him, that he might salute H1288 (QalInf) him.

And it cometh to pass at his completing to cause the burnt-offering to ascend, that lo, Samuel hath come, and Saul goeth out to meet him, to bless him;

Samuel said, “What have you done?” Saul said, “Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you didn’t come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash,

And Samuel H8050 said, H559 (QalImpf) What hast thou done? H6213 (QalPerf) And Saul H7586 said, H559 (QalImpf) Because I saw H7200 (QalPerf) that the people H5971 were scattered H5310 (QalPerf) from me, and [that] thou camest H935 (QalPerf) not within the days H3117 appointed, H4150 and [that] the Philistines H6430 gathered themselves together H622 (NiphPtc) at Michmash; H4363

and Samuel saith, ‘What hast thou done?’ And Saul saith, ‘Because I saw that the people were scattered from off me, and thou hadst not come at the appointment of the days, and the Philistines are gathered to Michmash,

Saul and all the people who were with him were gathered together, and came to the battle; and behold, they were all striking each other with their swords in very great confusion.

And Saul H7586 and all the people H5971 that [were] with him assembled H2199 (NiphImpf) themselves, and they came H935 (QalImpf) to the battle: H4421 and, behold, every man’s H376 sword H2719 was against his fellow, H7453 [and there was] a very H3966 great H1419 discomfiture. H4103

And Saul is called, and all the people who are with him, and they come in unto the battle, and, lo, the sword of each hath been against his neighbour-a very great destruction.

All the people came into the forest; and there was honey on the ground.

And all [they of] the land H776 came H935 (QalPerf) to a wood; H3293 and there was honey H1706 upon H6440 the ground. H7704

And all they of the land have come into a forest, and there is honey on the face of the field;

When the people had come to the forest, behold, honey was dripping, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.

And when the people H5971 were come H935 (QalImpf) into the wood, H3293 behold, the honey H1706 dropped; H1982 but no man put H5381 (HiphPtc) his hand H3027 to his mouth: H6310 for the people H5971 feared H3372 (QalPerf) the oath. H7621

and the people come in unto the forest, and lo, the honey dropped, and none is moving his hand unto his mouth, for the people feared the oath.

Saul came to the city of Amalek, and set an ambush in the valley.

And Saul H7586 came H935 (QalImpf) to a city H5892 of Amalek, H6002 and laid wait H7378 (QalImpf) H693 (HiphImpf) in the valley. H5158

And Saul cometh in unto a city of Amalek, and layeth wait in a valley;

Saul struck the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, which is before Egypt.

And Saul H7586 smote H5221 (HiphImpf) the Amalekites H6002 from Havilah H2341 [until] thou comest H935 (QalInf) to Shur, H7793 that [is] over against H6440 Egypt. H4714

And Saul smiteth Amalek from Havilah-thy going in to Shur, which is on the front of Egypt,

Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and Samuel was told, saying, “Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself, turned, passed on, and went down to Gilgal.”

And Samuel riseth early to meet Saul in the morning, and it is declared to Samuel, saying, ‘Saul hath come in to Carmel, and lo, he is setting up to himself a monument, and goeth round, and passeth over, and goeth down to Gilgal.’

Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, “You are blessed by Yahweh! I have performed the commandment of Yahweh.”

And Samuel cometh in unto Saul, and Saul saith to him, ‘Blessed art thou of Jehovah; I have performed the word of Jehovah.’

Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the cattle, to sacrifice to Yahweh your God. We have utterly destroyed the rest.”

And Saul saith, ‘From Amalek they have brought them, because the people had pity on the best of the flock, and of the herd, in order to sacrifice to Jehovah thy God, and the remnant we have devoted.’

Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed Yahweh’s voice, and have gone the way which Yahweh sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

And Saul saith unto Samuel, ‘Because-I have hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, and I go in the way which Jehovah hath sent me, and bring in Agag king of Amalek, and Amalek I have devoted;

Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” Yahweh said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh.’

Samuel did that which Yahweh spoke, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?”

And Samuel doth that which Jehovah hath spoken, and cometh in to Beth-Lehem, and the elders of the city tremble to meet him, and one saith, ‘Is thy coming peace?’

He said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” He sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

When they had come, he looked at Eliab, and said, “Surely Yahweh’s anointed is before him.”

And it cometh to pass, in their coming in, that he seeth Eliab, and saith, ‘Surely, before Jehovah is His anointed.’

Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your children here?” He said, “There remains yet the youngest. Behold, he is keeping the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down until he comes here.”

He sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with a handsome face and good appearance. Yahweh said, “Arise! Anoint him, for this is he.”
