The man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, “Beware that you not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there.”

And the man of God sendeth unto the king of Israel, saying, ‘Take heed of passing by this place, for thither are the Aramaeans coming down;

The king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of; and he saved himself there, not once or twice.

And the king H4428 of Israel H3478 sent H7971 (QalImpf) to the place H4725 which the man H376 of God H430 told H559 (QalPerf) him and warned H2094 (HiphPerf) him of, and saved H8104 (NiphPerf) himself there, not once H259 nor twice. H8147

and the king of Israel sendeth unto the place of which the man of God spake to him, and warned him, and he is preserved there not once nor twice.

When the servant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was around the city. His servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”

And the servant of the man of God riseth early, and goeth out, and lo, a force is surrounding the city, and horse and chariot, and his young man saith unto him, ‘Alas! my lord, how do we do?’

Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, neither is this the city. Follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.” He led them to Samaria.

And Elisha H477 said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, This [is] not the way, H1870 neither [is] this H2090 the city: H5892 follow H3212 (QalImpv) H310 me, and I will bring H3212 (HiphImpf) you to the man H376 whom ye seek. H1245 (PielImpf) But he led H3212 (HiphImpf) them to Samaria. H8111

And Elisha saith unto them, ‘This is not the way, nor is this the city; come after me, and I lead you unto the man whom ye seek;’ and he leadeth them to Samaria.

But Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Then the king sent a man from before him; but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, “Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Behold, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold the door shut against him. Isn’t the sound of his master’s feet behind him?”

And Elisha is sitting in his house, and the elders are sitting with him, and the king sendeth a man from before him; before the messenger doth come unto him, even he himself said unto the elders, ‘Have ye seen that this son of the murderer hath sent to turn aside my head? see, at the coming in of the messenger, shut the door, and ye have held him fast at the door, is not the sound of the feet of his lord behind him?’

Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, “Behold, if Yahweh made windows in heaven, could this thing be?” He said, “Behold, you will see it with your eyes, but will not eat of it.”

Then a lord H7991 on whose hand H3027 the king H4428 leaned H8172 (NiphPtc) answered H6030 (QalImpf) the man H376 of God, H430 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Behold, [if] the Lord H3068 would make H6213 (QalActPtc) windows H699 in heaven, H8064 might this thing H1697 be? And the captain whom the king hath, by whose hand he hath been supported, answereth the man of God and saith, ‘Lo, Jehovah is making windows in the heavens-shall this thing be?’ and he saith, ‘Lo, thou art seeing it with thine eyes, and thereof thou dost not eat.’

Now there were four leprous men at the entrance of the gate. They said to one another, “Why do we sit here until we die?

And four men have been leprous, at the opening of the gate, and they say one unto another, ‘What-we are sitting here till we have died;

They rose up in the twilight to go to the camp of the Syrians. When they had come to the outermost part of the camp of the Syrians, behold, no man was there.

And they rose up H6965 (QalImpf) in the twilight, H5399 to go H935 (QalInf) unto the camp H4264 of the Syrians: H758 and when they were come H935 (QalImpf) to the uttermost part H7097 of the camp H4264 of Syria, H758 behold, [there was] no man H376 there.

And they rise in the twilight, to go in unto the camp of Aram, and they come in unto the extremity of the camp of Aram, and lo, there is not a man there,

For the Lord^§ had made the army of the Syrians to hear the sound of chariots and the sound of horses, even the noise of a great army; and they said to one another, “Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to attack us.”

seeing Jehovah hath caused the camp of Aram to hear a noise of chariot and a noise of horse-a noise of great force, and they say one unto another, ‘Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of Egypt, to come against us.’

Then they said to one another, “We aren’t doing right. Today is a day of good news, and we keep silent. If we wait until the morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come, let’s go and tell the king’s household.”

So they came and called to the city gatekeepers; and they told them, “We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no man there, not even a man’s voice, but the horses tied, and the donkeys tied, and the tents as they were.”

And they come in, and call unto the gatekeeper of the city, and declare for themselves, saying, ‘We have come in unto the camp of Aram, and lo, there is not there a man, or sound of man, but the bound horse, and the bound ass, and tents as they are.’

The king had appointed the captain on whose hand he leaned to be in charge of the gate; and the people trampled over him in the gate, and he died as the man of God had said, who spoke when the king came down to him.

And the king H4428 appointed H6485 (HiphPerf) the lord H7991 on whose hand H3027 he leaned H8172 (NiphPtc) to have the charge of the gate: H8179 and the people H5971 trode H7429 (QalImpf) upon him in the gate, H8179 and he died, H4191 (QalImpf) as the man H376 of God H430 had said, H1696 (PielPerf) who spake H1696 (PielPerf) when the king H4428 came down H3381 (QalInf) to him.

And the king hath appointed the captain, by whose hand he is supported, over the gate, and the people tread him down in the gate, and he dieth, as the man of God spake, which he spake in the coming down of the king unto him,

It happened as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, “Two seahs° of barley for a shekel,° and a seah of fine flour for a shekel, shall be tomorrow about this time in the gate of Samaria;”

2 Kings 7:18a 1 seah is about 7 liters or 1.9 gallons or 0.8 pecks
2 Kings 7:18b A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces. In this context, it was probably a silver coin weighing that much.

And it came to pass as the man H376 of God H430 had spoken H1696 (PielInf) to the king, H4428 saying, H559 (QalInf) Two measures H5429 of barley H8184 for a shekel, H8255 and a measure H5429 of fine flour H5560 for a shekel, H8255 shall be to morrow H4279 about this time H6256 in the gate H8179 of Samaria: H8111

yea, it cometh to pass, according to the speaking of the man of God unto the king, saying, ‘Two measures of barley at a shekel, and a measure of fine flour at a shekel are, at this time to-morrow, in the gate of Samaria;’

and that captain answered the man of God, and said, “Now, behold, if Yahweh made windows in heaven, might such a thing be?” and he said, “Behold, you will see it with your eyes, but will not eat of it.”

and the captain answereth the man of God, and saith, ‘And lo, Jehovah is making windows in the heavens-it is according to this word?’ and he saith, ‘Lo, thou art seeing with thine eyes, and thereof thou dost not eat;’

The woman arose, and did according to the man of God’s word. She went with her household, and lived in the land of the Philistines for seven years.

And the woman riseth, and doth according to the word of the man of God, and goeth, she and her household, and sojourneth in the land of the Philistines seven years.

Now the king was talking with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, “Please tell me all the great things that Elisha has done.”

And the king is speaking unto Gehazi, servant of the man of God, saying, ‘Recount, I pray thee, to me, the whole of the great things that Elisha hath done.’

Elisha came to Damascus; and Benhadad the king of Syria was sick. He was told, “The man of God has come here.”

And Elisha H477 came H935 (QalImpf) to Damascus; H1834 and Benhadad H1130 the king H4428 of Syria H758 was sick; H2470 (QalActPtc) and it was told H5046 (HophImpf) him, saying, H559 (QalInf) The man H376 of God H430 is come H935 (QalPerf) hither. H2008

And Elisha cometh in to Damascus, and Ben-Hadad king of Aram is sick, and it is declared to him, saying, ‘The man of God hath come hither.’

The king said to Hazael, “Take a present in your hand, and go meet the man of God, and inquire of Yahweh by him, saying, ‘Will I recover from this sickness?’ ”

And the king saith unto Hazael, ‘Take in thy hand a present, and go to meet the man of God, and thou hast sought Jehovah by him, saying, Do I revive from this sickness?’

He settled his gaze steadfastly on him, until he was ashamed. Then the man of God wept.

And he settled H5975 (HiphImpf) his countenance H6440 stedfastly, H7760 (QalImpf) until he was ashamed: H954 (QalInf) and the man H376 of God H430 wept. H1058 (QalImpf)

And he setteth his face, yea, he setteth it till he is ashamed, and the man of God weepeth.

When Jehu came out to the servants of his lord and one said to him, “Is all well? Why did this madman come to you?” He said to them, “You know the man and how he talks.”

Then Jehu H3058 came forth H3318 (QalPerf) to the servants H5650 of his lord: H113 and [one] said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, [Is] all well? And Jehu hath gone out unto the servants of his lord, and one saith to him, ‘Is there peace? wherefore came this madman unto thee?’ and he saith unto them, ‘Ye have known the man and his talk.’

Then they hurried, and each man took his cloak, and put it under him on the top of the stairs, and blew the trumpet, saying, “Jehu is king.”

And they haste and take each his garment, and put it under him at the top of the stairs, and blow with a trumpet, and say, ‘Reigned hath Jehu!’

Joram said, “Get ready!” They got his chariot ready. Then Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out, each in his chariot; and they went out to meet Jehu, and found him on Naboth the Jezreelite’s land.

And Jehoram saith, ‘Harness;’ and his chariot is harnessed, and Jehoram king of Israel goeth out, and Ahaziah king of Judah, each in his chariot, and they go out to meet Jehu, and find him in the portion of Naboth the Jezreelite.

He who was over the household, and he who was over the city, the elders also, and those who raised the children, sent to Jehu, saying, “We are your servants, and will do all that you ask us. We will not make any man king. You do that which is good in your eyes.”

And he that [was] over the house, H1004 and he that [was] over the city, H5892 the elders H2205 also, and the bringers up H539 (QalActPtc) [of the children], sent H7971 (QalImpf) to Jehu, H3058 saying, H559 (QalInf) We [are] thy servants, H5650 and will do H6213 (QalImpf) all that thou shalt bid H559 (QalImpf) us; we will not make any H376 king: H4427 (HiphImpf) do H6213 (QalImpv) thou [that which is] good H2896 in thine eyes. And he who is over the house, and he who is over the city, and the elders, and the supporters, send unto Jehu, saying, ‘Thy servants we are, and all that thou sayest unto us we do; we do not make any one king-that which is good in thine eyes do.’

Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, “If you are on my side, and if you will listen to my voice, take the heads of the men who are your master’s sons, and come to me to Jezreel by tomorrow this time.” Now the king’s sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who brought them up.

And he writeth unto them a letter a second time, saying, ‘If ye are for me, and to my voice are hearkening, take the heads of the men-the sons of your lord, and come unto me about this time to-morrow, to Jezreel;’ and the sons of the king are seventy men, with the great ones of the city those bringing them up.

When the letter came to them, they took the king’s sons and killed them, even seventy people, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them to him to Jezreel.

And it came to pass, when the letter H5612 came H935 (QalInf) to them, that they took H3947 (QalImpf) the king’s H4428 sons, H1121 and slew H7819 (QalImpf) seventy H7657 persons, H376 and put H7760 (QalImpf) their heads H7218 in baskets, H1731 and sent H7971 (QalImpf) him [them] to Jezreel. H3157

And it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the letter unto them, that they take the sons of the king, and slaughter seventy men, and put their heads in baskets, and send unto him to Jezreel,

He said, “Take them alive!” They took them alive, and killed them at the pit of the shearing house, even forty-two men. He didn’t leave any of them.

And he saith, ‘Catch them alive;’ and they catch them alive, and slaughter them at the pit of the shearing-house, forty and two men, and he hath not left a man of them.

Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all of his worshipers, and all of his priests. Let no one be absent, for I have a great sacrifice to Baal. Whoever is absent, he shall not live.” But Jehu did deceptively, intending to destroy the worshipers of Baal.

Now therefore call H7121 (QalImpv) unto me all the prophets H5030 of Baal, H1168 all his servants, H5647 (QalActPtc) and all his priests; H3548 let none H376 be wanting: H6485 (NiphImpf) for I have a great H1419 sacrifice H2077 [to do] to Baal; H1168 whosoever shall be wanting, H6485 (NiphImpf) he shall not live. and now, all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests, call ye unto me; let not a man be lacking, for a great sacrifice I have for Baal; every one who is lacking-he doth not live;’ and Jehu hath done it in subtilty, in order to destroy the servants of Baal.

Jehu sent through all Israel; and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left that didn’t come. They came into the house of Baal; and the house of Baal was filled from one end to another.

And Jehu H3058 sent H7971 (QalImpf) through all Israel: H3478 and all the worshippers H5647 (QalActPtc) of Baal H1168 came, H935 (QalImpf) so that there was not a man H376 left H7604 (NiphPerf) that came H935 (QalPerf) not. And Jehu sendeth into all Israel, and all the servants of Baal come in, and there hath not been left a man who hath not come in; and they come in to the house of Baal, and the house of Baal is full-mouth to mouth.

So they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had appointed for himself eighty men outside, and said, “If any of the men whom I bring into your hands escape, he who lets him go, his life shall be for the life of him.”

And when they went in H935 (QalImpf) to offer H6213 (QalInf) sacrifices H2077 and burnt offerings, H5930 Jehu H3058 appointed H7760 (QalPerf) fourscore H8084 men H376 without, H2351 and said, H559 (QalImpf) [If] any H376 of the men H582 whom I have brought H935 (HiphPtc) into your hands H3027 escape, H4422 (NiphImpf) [he that letteth him go], his life H5315 [shall be] for the life H5315 of him.

And they come in to make sacrifices and burnt-offerings, and Jehu hath set for himself in an out-place eighty men, and saith, ‘The man who letteth escape any of the men whom I am bringing in unto your hand-his soul for his soul.’

As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, “Go in and kill them! Let no one escape.” So they struck them with the edge of the sword. The guard and the captains threw the bodies out, and went to the inner shrine of the house of Baal.

And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end H3615 (PielInf) of offering H6213 (QalInf) the burnt offering, H5930 that Jehu H3058 said H559 (QalImpf) to the guard H7323 (QalPtc) and to the captains, H7991 Go in, H935 (QalImpv) [and] slay H5221 (HiphImpv) them; let none H376 come forth. H3318 (QalImpf) And they smote H5221 (HiphImpf) them with the edge H6310 of the sword; H2719 and the guard H7323 (QalPtc) and the captains H7991 cast [them] out, H7993 (HiphImpf) and went H3212 (QalImpf) to the city H5892 of the house H1004 of Baal. And it cometh to pass at his finishing to make the burnt-offering, that Jehu saith to the runners, and to the captains, ‘Go in, smite them, let none come out;’ and they smite them by the mouth of the sword, and the runners and the captains cast them out; and they go unto the city, to the house of Baal,

You shall surround the king, every man with his weapons in his hand; and he who comes within the ranks, let him be slain. Be with the king when he goes out, and when he comes in.”

And ye shall compass H5362 (HiphPerf) the king H4428 round about, H5439 every man H376 with his weapons H3627 in his hand: H3027 and he that cometh H935 (QalActPtc) within the ranges, H7713 let him be slain: H4191 (HophImpf) and be ye with the king H4428 as he goeth out H3318 (QalInf) and as he cometh in. and ye have compassed the king round about, each with his weapons in his hand, and he who is coming unto the ranges is put to death; and be ye with the king in his going out and in his coming in.’

The captains over hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded; and they each took his men, those who were to come in on the Sabbath with those who were to go out on the Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.

And the captains H8269 over the hundreds H3967 did H6213 (QalImpf) according to all [things] that Jehoiada H3077 the priest H3548 commanded: H6680 (PielPerf) and they took H3947 (QalImpf) every man H376 his men H582 that were to come in H935 (QalActPtc) on the sabbath, H7676 with them that should go out H3318 (QalActPtc) on the sabbath, H7676 and came H935 (QalImpf) to Jehoiada H3077 the priest. And the heads of the hundreds do according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded, and take each his men going in on the sabbath, with those going out on the sabbath, and come in unto Jehoiada the priest,

The guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, along by the altar and the house, around the king.

And the guard H7323 (QalPtc) stood, H5975 (QalImpf) every man H376 with his weapons H3627 in his hand, H3027 round about H5439 the king, H4428 from the right H3233 corner H3802 of the temple H1004 to the left H8042 corner H3802 of the temple, H1004 [along] by the altar H4196 and the temple. H1004

and Jehoiada the priest taketh a chest, and pierceth a hole in its lid, and putteth it near the altar, on the right side, as one cometh in to the house of Jehovah, and the priests keeping the threshold have put there all the money that is brought in to the house of Jehovah.

Moreover they didn’t demand an accounting from the men into whose hand they delivered the money to give to those who did the work; for they dealt faithfully.
