Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Haven’t you heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith reigns, and David our lord doesn’t know it?

και ειπεν ναθαν προς βηρσαβεε μητερα σαλωμων λεγων ουκ ηκουσας οτι εβασιλευσεν αδωνιας υιος αγγιθ και ο κυριος ημων δαυιδ ουκ εγνω

Go in to King David, and tell him, ‘Didn’t you, my lord the king, swear to your servant, saying, “Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then does Adonijah reign?’

δευρο εισελθε προς τον βασιλεα δαυιδ και ερεις προς αυτον λεγουσα ουχι συ κυριε μου βασιλευ ωμοσας τη δουλη σου λεγων οτι σαλωμων ο υιος σου βασιλευσει μετ εμε και αυτος καθιειται επι του θρονου μου και τι οτι εβασιλευσεν αδωνιας

She said to him, “My lord, you swore by Yahweh^§ your God^§ to your servant, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’

For he has gone down today, and has slain cattle, fatlings, and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king’s sons, the captains of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’

most certainly as I swore to you by Yahweh, the God of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place;’ I will most certainly do this today.”

οτι καθως ωμοσα σοι εν κυριω τω θεω ισραηλ λεγων οτι σαλωμων ο υιος σου βασιλευσει μετ εμε και αυτος καθησεται επι του θρονου μου αντ εμου οτι ουτως ποιησω τη ημερα ταυτη

While he yet spoke, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came; and Adonijah said, “Come in; for you are a worthy man, and bring good news.”

He said, “Please speak to Solomon the king (for he will not tell you ‘no’), that he give me Abishag the Shunammite as wife.”

Then she said, “I ask one small petition of you; don’t deny me.” The king said to her, “Ask on, my mother, for I will not deny you.”

King Solomon answered his mother, “Why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also, for he is my elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.”

και απεκριθη σαλωμων ο βασιλευς και ειπεν τη μητρι αυτου και ινα τι συ ητησαι την αβισακ τω αδωνια και αιτησαι αυτω την βασιλειαν οτι ουτος αδελφος μου ο μεγας υπερ εμε και αυτω αβιαθαρ ο ιερευς και αυτω ιωαβ ο υιος σαρουιας ο αρχιστρατηγος εταιρος

Then King Solomon swore by Yahweh, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life.

Then king H4428 Solomon H8010 sware H7650 (NiphImpf) by the Lord, H3068 saying, H559 (QalInf) God H430 do H6213 (QalImpf) so to me, and more also, H3254 (HiphImpf) if Adonijah H138 have not spoken H1696 (PielPerf) this word H1697 against his own life. H5315

και ωμοσεν ο βασιλευς σαλωμων κατα του κυριου λεγων ταδε ποιησαι μοι ο θεος και ταδε προσθειη οτι κατα της ψυχης αυτου ελαλησεν αδωνιας τον λογον τουτον

Now therefore as Yahweh lives, who has established me and set me on my father David’s throne, and who has made me a house as he promised, surely Adonijah shall be put to death today.”

Now therefore, as the Lord H3068 liveth, H2416 which hath established H3559 (HiphPerf) me, and set H3427 (HiphImpf) me on the throne H3678 of David H1732 my father, H1 and who hath made H6213 (QalPerf) me an house, H1004 as he promised, H1696 (PielPerf) Adonijah H138 shall be put to death H4191 (HophImpf) this day. και νυν ζη κυριος ος ητοιμασεν με και εθετο με επι τον θρονον δαυιδ του πατρος μου και αυτος εποιησεν μοι οικον καθως ελαλησεν κυριος οτι σημερον θανατωθησεται αδωνιας

To Abiathar the priest the king said, “Go to Anathoth, to your own fields, for you are worthy of death. But I will not at this time put you to death, because you bore the Lord^§ Yahweh’s ark before David my father, and because you were afflicted in all in which my father was afflicted.”

1 Kings 2:26 Heb. a man of death

και τω αβιαθαρ τω ιερει ειπεν ο βασιλευς αποτρεχε συ εις αναθωθ εις αγρον σου οτι ανηρ θανατου ει συ εν τη ημερα ταυτη και ου θανατωσω σε οτι ηρας την κιβωτον της διαθηκης κυριου ενωπιον του πατρος μου και οτι εκακουχηθης εν απασιν οις εκακουχηθη ο πατηρ μου

This news came to Joab; for Joab had followed Adonijah, although he didn’t follow Absalom. Joab fled to Yahweh’s Tent, and held onto the horns of the altar.

Then tidings H8052 came H935 (QalPerf) to Joab: H3097 for Joab H3097 had turned H5186 (QalPerf) after H310 Adonijah, H138 though he turned H5186 (QalPerf) not after H310 Absalom. King Solomon was told, “Joab has fled to Yahweh’s Tent; and behold, he is by the altar.” Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, “Go, fall on him.”

Benaiah came to Yahweh’s Tent, and said to him, “The king says, ‘Come out!’” He said, “No; but I will die here.” Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, “This is what Joab said, and this is how he answered me.”

And Benaiah H1141 came H935 (QalImpf) to the tabernacle H168 of the Lord, H3068 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the king, H4428 Come forth. For on the day you go out and pass over the brook Kidron, know for certain that you will surely die. Your blood will be on your own head.”

Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and had come again.

And it was told H5046 (HophImpf) Solomon H8010 that Shimei H8096 had gone H1980 (QalPerf) from Jerusalem H3389 to Gath, H1661 and was come again. H7725 (QalImpf)

και απηγγελη τω σαλωμων λεγοντες οτι επορευθη σεμει εξ ιερουσαλημ εις γεθ και απεστρεψεν τους δουλους αυτου

The king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, “Didn’t I adjure you by Yahweh and warn you, saying, ‘Know for certain that on the day you go out and walk anywhere else, you shall surely die’? You said to me, ‘The saying that I have heard is good.’

And the king H4428 sent H7971 (QalImpf) and called H7121 (QalImpf) for Shimei, H8096 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Did I not make thee to swear H7650 (HiphPerf) by the Lord, H3068 and protested H5749 (HiphImpf) unto thee, saying, H559 (QalInf) Know H3045 (QalImpf) for a certain, H3045 (QalInf) on the day H3117 thou goest out, H3318 (QalInf) and walkest H1980 (QalPerf) abroad any whither, H575 that thou shalt surely H4191 (QalInf) die? H4191 (QalImpf) and thou saidst H559 (QalImpf) unto me, The word H1697 that I have heard H8085 (QalPerf) is good. H2896

και απεστειλεν ο βασιλευς και εκαλεσεν τον σεμει και ειπεν προς αυτον ουχι ωρκισα σε κατα του κυριου και επεμαρτυραμην σοι λεγων εν η αν ημερα εξελθης εξ ιερουσαλημ και πορευθης εις δεξια η εις αριστερα γινωσκων γνωση οτι θανατω αποθανη

However, the people sacrificed in the high places, because there was not yet a house built for Yahweh’s name.

Only the people H5971 sacrificed H2076 (PielPtc) in high places, H1116 because there was no house H1004 built H1129 (NiphPerf) unto the name H8034 of the Lord, H3068 until those days. H3117

πλην ο λαος ησαν θυμιωντες επι τοις υψηλοις οτι ουκ ωκοδομηθη οικος τω ονοματι κυριου εως νυν

The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.

και ανεστη και επορευθη εις γαβαων θυσαι εκει οτι αυτη υψηλοτατη και μεγαλη χιλιαν ολοκαυτωσιν ανηνεγκεν σαλωμων επι το θυσιαστηριον εν γαβαων

Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this great people of yours?”

1 Kings 3:9 Heb. hearing

και δωσεις τω δουλω σου καρδιαν ακουειν και διακρινειν τον λαον σου εν δικαιοσυνη του συνιειν ανα μεσον αγαθου και κακου οτι τις δυνησεται κρινειν τον λαον σου τον βαρυν τουτον

This request pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

και ηρεσεν ενωπιον κυριου οτι ητησατο σαλωμων το ρημα τουτο

The other woman said, “No! But the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son.” The first one said, “No! But the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son.” They argued like this before the king.

και ειπεν η γυνη η ετερα ουχι αλλα ο υιος μου ο ζων ο δε υιος σου ο τεθνηκως και ελαλησαν ενωπιον του βασιλεως

Then the king said, “One says, ‘This is my son who lives, and your son is the dead one;’ and the other says, ‘No! But your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’”

Then the woman whose the living child was spoke to the king, for her heart yearned over her son, and she said, “Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and in no way kill him!” But the other said, “He shall be neither mine nor yours. Divide him.”

Nevertheless, you shall not build the house; but your son who shall come out of your body, he shall build the house for my name.’

But will God in very deed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens can’t contain you; how much less this house that I have built!

οτι ει αληθως κατοικησει ο θεος μετα ανθρωπων επι της γης ει ο ουρανος και ο ουρανος του ουρανου ουκ αρκεσουσιν σοι πλην και ο οικος ουτος ον ωκοδομησα τω ονοματι σου

“When the sky is shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against you, if they pray toward this place and confess your name, and turn from their sin when you afflict them,

“If your people go out to battle against their enemy, by whatever way you shall send them, and they pray to Yahweh toward the city which you have chosen, and toward the house which I have built for your name,
