[1] James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,ⓘ to the twelve tribes which are in the Dispersion: Greetings. [2] Count it all joy, my brothers,§ when you fall into various temptations, [3] knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. [4] Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. [5] But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. [6] But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed. [7] For that man shouldn’t think that he will receive anything from the Lord. [8] He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. [9] Let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position; [10] and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away. [11] For the sun arises with the scorching wind and withers the grass; and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So the rich man will also fade away in his pursuits. [12] Blessed is a person who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord promised to those who love him. [13] Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. [14] But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed. [15] Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin. The sin, when it is full grown, produces death. [16] Don’t be deceived, my beloved brothers. [17] Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation nor turning shadow. [18] Of his own will he gave birth to us by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. [19] So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; [20] for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. [21] Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.§ [22] But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. [23] For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror; [24] for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. [25] But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom and continues, not being a hearer who forgets but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does. [26] If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious while he doesn’t bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man’s religion is worthless. [27] Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
Footnotes
- “Christ” means “Anointed One”.
- The word for “brothers” here and where context allows may also be correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.”

[1] James,G2385 a servantG1401 of GodG2316 andG2532 of the LordG2962 JesusG2424 Christ,G5547 to the twelveG1427 tribesG5443 whichG1722 are scattered abroad,G1290 greeting.G5463(PresActInf) [2] MyG3450 brethren,G80 count itG2233(AorMidDepInd) allG3956 joyG5479 whenG3752 ye fallG4045(Aor2ActSubj) into diversG4164 temptations;G3986 [3] KnowingG1097(PresActPtc) [this], thatG3754 the tryingG1383 of yourG5216 faithG4102 workethG2716(PresMidPasDepInd) patience.G5281 [4] ButG1161 letG2192 patienceG5281 haveG2192(PresActImpr) [her] perfectG5046 work,G2041 thatG2443 ye may beG5600(PresSubj) perfectG5046 andG2532 entire,G3648 wantingG3007(PresPasPtc) nothing.G1722 [5] If anyG1536 of youG5216 lackG3007(PresPasInd) wisdom,G4678 let him askG154(PresActImpr) ofG3844 God,G2316 that givethG1325(PresActPtc) to allG3956 [men] liberally,G574 andG2532 upbraidethG3679(PresActPtc) not;G3361 andG2532 it shall be givenG1325(FutPasInd) him.G846 [6] ButG1161 let him askG154(PresActImpr) inG1722 faith,G4102 nothingG3367 wavering.G1252(PresMidPtc) ForG1063 he that waverethG1252(PresMidPtc) is likeG1503(PerfActInd) a waveG2830 of the seaG2281 driven with the windG416(PresPasPtc) andG2532 tossed.G4494(PresPasPtc) [7] ForG1063 letG3633 notG3361 thatG1565 manG444 thinkG3633(PresMidPasDepImpr) thatG3754 he shall receiveG2983(FutMidDepInd) any thingG5100 ofG3844 the Lord.G2962 [8] A double mindedG1374 manG435 [is] unstableG182 inG1722 allG3956 hisG846 ways.G3598 [9] LetG2744 the brotherG80 of low degreeG5011 rejoiceG2744(PresMidPasDepImpr) inG1722 that heG846 is exalted:G5311 [10] ButG1161 the rich,G4145 inG1722 that heG846 is made low:G5014 becauseG3754 asG5613 the flowerG438 of the grassG5528 he shall pass away.G3928(FutMidDepInd) [11] ForG1063 the sunG2246 is no sooner risenG393(AorActInd) withG4862 a burning heat,G2742 butG2532 it witherethG3583(AorActInd) the grass,G5528 andG2532 the flowerG438 thereofG846 falleth,G1601(Aor2ActInd) andG2532 the graceG2143 of the fashionG4383 of itG846 perisheth:G622(Aor2MidInd) soG3779 alsoG2532 shallG3133 the rich manG4145 fade awayG3133(FutPasInd) inG1722 hisG846 ways.G4197 [12] BlessedG3107 [is] the manG435 thatG3739 endurethG5278(PresActInd) temptation:G3986 forG3754 when he is tried,G1384 he shall receiveG2983(FutMidDepInd) the crownG4735 of life,G2222 whichG3739 the LordG2962 hath promisedG1861(AorMidDepInd) to them that loveG25(PresActPtc) him.G846 [13] LetG3004 no manG3367 sayG3004(PresActImpr) when he is tempted,G3985(PresPasPtc) I am temptedG3985(PresPasInd) ofG575 God:G2316 forG1063 GodG2316 cannot be temptedG551 with evil,G2556 neitherG1161 temptethG3985 heG846 any man:G3762 [14] ButG1161 every manG1538 is tempted,G3985(PresPasInd) when he is drawn awayG1828(PresPasPtc) ofG5259 his ownG2398 lust,G1939 andG2532 enticed.G1185(PresPasPtc) [15] ThenG1534 when lustG1939 hath conceived,G4815(Aor2ActPtc) it bringeth forthG5088(PresActInd) sin:G266 andG1161 sin,G266 when it is finished,G658(AorPasPtc) bringeth forthG616(PresActInd) death.G2288 [16] DoG4105 notG3361 err,G4105(PresPasImpr) myG3450 belovedG27 brethren.G80 [17] EveryG3956 goodG18 giftG1394 andG2532 everyG3956 perfectG5046 giftG1434 isG2076(PresInd) from above,G509 and cometh downG2597(PresActPtc) fromG575 the FatherG3962 of lights,G5457 withG3844 whomG3739 isG1762(PresInd) noG3756 variableness,G3883 neitherG2228 shadowG644 of turning.G5157 [18] Of his own willG1014(AorPasDepPtc) begat heG616(AorActInd) usG2248 with the wordG3056 of truth,G225 thatG1519 weG2248 should beG1511(PresInf) a kindG5100 of firstfruitsG536 of hisG846 creatures.G2938 [19] Wherefore,G5620 myG3450 belovedG27 brethren,G80 letG2077 everyG3956 manG444 beG2077(PresImpr) swiftG5036 toG1519 hear,G191(AorActInf) slowG1021 toG1519 speak,G2980(AorActInf) slowG1021 toG1519 wrath:G3709 [20] ForG1063 the wrathG3709 of manG435 workethG2716(PresMidPasDepInd) notG3756 the righteousnessG1343 of God.G2316 [21] WhereforeG1352 lay apartG659(Aor2MidPtc) allG3956 filthinessG4507 andG2532 superfluityG4050 of naughtiness,G2549 and receiveG1209(AorMidDepImpr) withG1722 meeknessG4240 the engraftedG1721 word,G3056 whichG3588 is ableG1410(PresMidPasDepPtc) to saveG4982(AorActInf) yourG5216 souls.G5590 [22] ButG1161 be yeG1096(PresMidPasDepImpr) doersG4163 of the word,G3056 andG2532 notG3361 hearersG202 only,G3440 deceivingG3884(PresMidPasDepPtc) your own selves.G1438 [23] ForG3754 if anyG1536 beG2076(PresInd) a hearerG202 of the word,G3056 andG2532 notG3756 a doer,G4163 heG3778 is likeG1503(PerfActInd) unto a manG435 beholdingG2657(PresActPtc) hisG846 naturalG1078 faceG4383 inG1722 a glass:G2072 [24] ForG1063 he beholdethG2657(AorActInd) himself,G1438 andG2532 goeth his way,G565(Perf2ActInd) andG2532 straightwayG2112 forgettethG1950(Aor2MidDepInd) what manner of manG3697 he was.G2258(ImpfInd) [25] ButG1161 whoso lookethG3879(AorActPtc) intoG1519 the perfectG5046 lawG3551 of liberty,G1657 andG2532 continuethG3887(AorActPtc) [therein], heG3778 beingG1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) notG3756 a forgetfulG1953 hearer,G202 butG235 a doerG4163 of the work,G2041 this manG3778 shall beG2071(FutInd) blessedG3107 inG1722 hisG846 deed.G4162 [26] If any manG1536 amongG1722 youG5213 seemG1380(PresActInd) to beG1511(PresInf) religious,G2357 and bridlethG5468(PresActPtc) notG3361 hisG846 tongue,G1100 butG235
