They are making their heart glad, and lo, men of the city, men-sons of worthlessness-have gone round about the house, beating on the door, and they speak unto the old man, the master of the house, saying, ‘Bring out the man who hath come unto thine house, and we know him.’

The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly.

And the man, the master of the house, goeth out unto them, and saith unto them, ‘Nay, my brethren, do not evil, I pray you, after that this man hath come in unto my house, do not this folly;

Then the woman came in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, until it was light.

and the woman cometh in at the turning of the morning, and falleth at the opening of the man’s house, where her lord is, till the light.

When he had come into his house, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.

and cometh in unto his house, and taketh the knife, and layeth hold on his concubine, and cutteth her in pieces to her bones-into twelve pieces, and sendeth her into all the border of Israel.

The Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered, “I came into Gibeah that belongs to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to spend the night.

And the man, the Levite, husband of the woman who hath been murdered, answereth and saith, ‘Into Gibeah (which is to Benjamin) I have come, I and my concubine, to lodge;

and we will take ten men of one hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and one hundred of one thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand to get food for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that the men of Gibeah have done in Israel.”

Then all the children of Israel and all the people went up, and came to Bethel, and wept, and sat there before Yahweh, and fasted that day until evening; then they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before Yahweh.

Ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel came over against Gibeah, and the battle was severe; but they didn’t know that disaster was close to them.

And they come in over against Gibeah-ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel-and the battle is grievous, and they have not known that the evil is striking against them.

The people came to Bethel and sat there until evening before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept severely.

And the people come in to Beth-El, and sit there till the evening before God, and lift up their voice, and weep-a great weeping,

They said, “What one is there of the tribes of Israel who didn’t come up to Yahweh to Mizpah?” Behold, no one came from Jabesh Gilead to the camp to the assembly.

And they say, ‘Who is that one out of the tribes of Israel who hath not come up unto Jehovah to Mizpeh?’ and lo, none hath come in unto the camp from Jabesh-Gilead-unto the assembly.

They found among the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead four hundred young virgins who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

And they find out of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead four hundred young women, virgins, who have not known man by the lying of a male, and they bring them in unto the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

It shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, that we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us, because we didn’t take for each man his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them; otherwise you would now be guilty.’ ”

and it hath been, when their fathers or their brethren come in to plead unto us, that we have said unto them, Favour us by them, for we have not taken to each his wife in battle, for ye-ye have not given to them at this time that ye are guilty.’

The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi. The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab and lived there.

And the name H8034 of the man H376 [was] Elimelech, H458 and the name H8034 of his wife H802 Naomi, H5281 and the name H8034 of his two H8147 sons H1121 Mahlon H4248 and Chilion, H3630 Ephrathites H673 of Bethlehemjudah. H1035 H3063 And they came H935 (QalImpf) into the country H7704 of Moab, H4124 and continued there.

And the name of the man is Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites from Beth-Lehem-Judah; and they come into the fields of Moab, and are there.

So they both went until they came to Bethlehem. When they had come to Bethlehem, all the city was excited about them, and they asked, “Is this Naomi?”

So they two H8147 went H3212 (QalImpf) until they came H935 (QalInf) to Bethlehem. H1035 And it came to pass, when they were come H935 (QalInf) to Bethlehem, H1035 that all the city H5892 was moved H1949 (NiphImpf) about them, and they said, H559 (QalImpf) [Is] this Naomi? H5281

and they go both of them till their coming in to Beth-Lehem; and it cometh to pass at their coming in to Beth-Lehem, that all the city is moved at them, and they say, ‘Is this Naomi?’

So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab. They came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

So Naomi H5281 returned, H7725 (QalImpf) and Ruth H7327 the Moabitess, H4125 her daughter in law, H3618 with her, which returned H7725 (QalPerf) out of the country H7704 of Moab: H4124 and they came H935 (QalPerf) to Bethlehem H1035 in the beginning H8462 of barley H8184 harvest. H7105

And Naomi turneth back, and Ruth the Moabitess her daughter-in-law with her, who hath turned back from the fields of Moab, and they have come in to Beth-Lehem at the commencement of barley-harvest.

She went, and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers; and she happened to come to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.

And she went, H3212 (QalImpf) and came, H935 (QalImpf) and gleaned H3950 (PielImpf) in the field H7704 after H310 the reapers: H7114 (QalActPtc) and her hap H4745 was to light H7136 (QalImpf) on a part H2513 of the field H7704 [belonging] unto Boaz, H1162 who [was] of the kindred H4940 of Elimelech. And she goeth and cometh and gathereth in a field after the reapers, and her chance happeneth-the portion of the field is Boaz’s who is of the family of Elimelech.

Behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, “May Yahweh be with you.” They answered him, “May Yahweh bless you.”

And, behold, Boaz H1162 came H935 (QalActPtc) from Bethlehem, H1035 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto the reapers, H7114 (QalActPtc) The Lord H3068 [be] with you. And they answered H559 (QalImpf) him, The Lord H3068 bless H1288 (PielImpf) thee.

And lo, Boaz hath come from Beth-Lehem, and saith to the reapers, ‘Jehovah is with you;’ and they say to him, ‘Jehovah doth bless thee.’

She said, ‘Please let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.’ So she came, and has continued even from the morning until now, except that she rested a little in the house.”

And she said, H559 (QalImpf) I pray you, let me glean H3950 (PielImpf) and gather H622 (QalPerf) after H310 the reapers H7114 (QalActPtc) among the sheaves: H6016 so she came, H935 (QalImpf) and hath continued H5975 (QalImpf) even H227 from the morning H1242 until now, that she tarried H3427 (QalInf) a little H4592 in the house. and she saith, Let me glean, I pray thee-and I have gathered among the sheaves after the reapers; and she cometh and remaineth since the morning and till now; she sat in the house a little.

May Yahweh repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from Yahweh, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”

The Lord H3068 recompense H7999 (PielImpf) thy work, H6467 and a full H8003 reward H4909 be given thee of the Lord H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 under whose wings H3671 thou art come H935 (QalPerf) to trust. H2620 (QalInf)

Jehovah doth recompense thy work, and thy reward is complete from Jehovah, God of Israel, under whose wings thou hast come to take refuge.’

She took it up, and went into the city. Then her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned; and she brought out and gave to her that which she had left after she had enough.

and she taketh it up, and goeth into the city, and her mother-in-law seeth that which she hath gleaned, and she bringeth out and giveth to her that which she left from her satiety.

It shall be, when he lies down, that you shall note the place where he is lying. Then you shall go in, uncover his feet, and lie down. Then he will tell you what to do.”

and it cometh to pass when he lieth down, that thou hast known the place where he lieth down, and hast gone in, and uncovered his feet, and lain down,-and he doth declare to thee that which thou dost do.’

When Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. She came softly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.

And Boaz eateth and drinketh, and his heart is glad; and he goeth in to lie down at the end of the heap; and she cometh in gently, and uncovereth his feet, and lieth down.

She lay at his feet until the morning, then she rose up before one could discern another. For he said, “Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.”

He said, “Bring the mantle that is on you, and hold it.” She held it; and he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her; then he went into the city.

When she came to her mother-in-law, she said, “How did it go, my daughter?” She told her all that the man had done for her.

She said, “He gave me these six measures of barley; for he said, ‘Don’t go empty to your mother-in-law.’ ”

And she saith, ‘These six measures of barley he hath given to me, for he said, Thou dost not go in empty unto thy mother-in-law.’

All the people who were in the gate, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. May Yahweh make the woman who has come into your house like Rachel and like Leah, which both built the house of Israel; and treat you worthily in Ephrathah, and be famous in Bethlehem.

And all the people who are in the gate say-also the elders-‘Witnesses! Jehovah make the woman who is coming in unto thy house as Rachel and as Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel; and do thou virtuously in Ephrathah, and proclaim the Name in Beth-Lehem;

So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife; and he went in to her, and Yahweh enabled her to conceive, and she bore a son.

So Boaz H1162 took H3947 (QalImpf) Ruth, H7327 and she was his wife: H802 and when he went in H935 (QalImpf) unto her, the Lord H3068 gave H5414 (QalImpf) her conception, H2032 and she bare H3205 (QalImpf) a son. H1121

And Boaz taketh Ruth, and she becometh his wife, and he goeth in unto her, and Jehovah giveth to her conception, and she beareth a son.

They rose up in the morning early and worshiped Yahweh, then returned and came to their house to Ramah. Then Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Yahweh remembered her.

And they rise early in the morning, and bow themselves before Jehovah, and turn back, and come in unto their house in Ramah, and Elkanah knoweth Hannah his wife, and Jehovah remembereth her;

But Hannah didn’t go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before Yahweh, and stay there forever.”

But Hannah H2584 went not up; H5927 (QalPerf) for she said H559 (QalPerf) unto her husband, H376 [I will not go up] until the child H5288 be weaned, H1580 (NiphImpf) and [then] I will bring H935 (HiphPerf) him, that he may appear H7200 (NiphPerf) before H6440 the Lord, H3068 and there abide H3427 (QalPerf) for H5704 ever. And Hannah hath not gone up, for she said to her husband, ‘Till the youth is weaned-then I have brought him in, and he hath appeared before the face of Jehovah, and dwelt there-unto the age.’

When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, and one ephah° of meal, and a container of wine, and brought him to Yahweh’s house in Shiloh. The child was young.

and she causeth him to go up with her when she hath weaned him, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and she bringeth him into the house of Jehovah at Shiloh, and the youth is but a youth.

They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli.

And they slaughter the bullock, and bring in the youth unto Eli,

The custom of the priests with the people was that when anyone offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant came while the meat was boiling, with a fork of three teeth in his hand;

And the custom of the priests with the people is: any man sacrificing a sacrifice-then hath the servant of the priest come in when the flesh is boiling, and the hook of three teeth in his hand,

and he stabbed it into the pan, or kettle, or cauldron, or pot. The priest took all that the fork brought up for himself. They did this to all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh.

and hath struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the hook bringeth up doth the priest take for himself; thus they do to all Israel who are coming in, there, in Shiloh.

Yes, before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat to roast for the priest; for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but raw.”

Also before they make perfume with the fat-then hath the priest’s servant come in, and said to the man who is sacrificing, ‘Give flesh to roast for the priest, and he doth not take of thee flesh boiled, but raw;’

A man of God came to Eli and said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Did I reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in bondage to Pharaoh’s house?

And there cometh a man of God unto Eli, and saith unto him, ‘Thus said Jehovah, Was I really revealed unto the house of thy father in their being in Egypt, before Pharaoh’s house,

Behold,^§ the days come that I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, that there will not be an old man in your house.

‘Lo, days are coming, and I have cut off thine arm, and the arm of the house of thy father, that an old man is not in thy house;

This will be the sign to you that will come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they will both die.

And this [shall be] a sign H226 unto thee, that shall come H935 (QalImpf) upon thy two H8147 sons, H1121 on Hophni H2652 and Phinehas; H6372 in one H259 day H3117 they shall die H4191 (QalImpf) both H8147 of them.

and this is to thee the sign that cometh unto thy two sons, unto Hophni and Phinehas-in one day they die both of them;

It will happen that everyone who is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and will say, “Please put me into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a morsel of bread.” ’ ”

and it hath been, every one who is left in thy house doth come in to bow himself to him, for a wage of silver, and a cake of bread, and hath said, Admit me, I pray thee, unto one of the priest’s offices, to eat a morsel of bread.’

Yahweh came, and stood, and called as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak; for your servant hears.”

And Jehovah cometh, and stationeth Himself, and calleth as time by time, ‘Samuel, Samuel;’ and Samuel saith, ‘Speak, for Thy servant if hearing.’

When the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has Yahweh defeated us today before the Philistines? Let’s get the ark of Yahweh’s covenant out of Shiloh and bring it to us, that it may come among us and save us out of the hand of our enemies.”

And the people cometh in unto the camp, and the elders of Israel say, ‘Why hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? we take unto us from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and it cometh into our midst, and He doth save us out of the hand of our enemies.’

When the ark of Yahweh’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth resounded.

And when the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 of the Lord H3068 came H935 (QalInf) into the camp, H4264 all Israel H3478 shouted H7321 (HiphImpf) with a great H1419 shout, H8643 so that the earth H776 rang again. H1949 (NiphImpf)

And it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of the covenant of Jehovah unto the camp, that all Israel shout-a great shout-and the earth is moved.

When the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” They understood that Yahweh’s ark had come into the camp.

And when the Philistines H6430 heard H8085 (QalImpf) the noise H6963 of the shout, H8643 they said, H559 (QalImpf) What [meaneth] the noise H6963 of this great H1419 shout H8643 in the camp H4264 of the Hebrews? And the Philistines hear the noise of the shouting, and say, ‘What is the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews?’ and they perceive that the ark of Jehovah hath come in unto the camp.

The Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp.” They said, “Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing before.

And the Philistines H6430 were afraid, H3372 (QalImpf) for they said, H559 (QalPerf) God H430 is come H935 (QalPerf) into the camp. H4264 And they said, H559 (QalImpf) Woe H188 unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore. H865 H8032

And the Philistines are afraid, for they said, ‘God hath come in unto the camp;’ and they say, ‘Woe to us, for there hath not been like this heretofore.

A man of Benjamin ran out of the army and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head.

And there ran H7323 (QalImpf) a man H376 of Benjamin H1144 out of the army, H4634 and came H935 (QalImpf) to Shiloh H7887 the same day H3117 with his clothes H4055 rent, H7167 (QalPasPtc) and with earth H127 upon his head. H7218

And a man of Benjamin runneth out of the ranks, and cometh into Shiloh, on that day, and his long robes are rent, and earth on his head;

When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for God’s ark. When the man came into the city and told about it, all the city cried out.

And when he came, H935 (QalImpf) lo, Eli H5941 sat H3427 (QalActPtc) upon a seat H3678 by the wayside H1870 H3027 (Qere) H3197 watching: H6822 (PielPtc) for his heart H3820 trembled H2730 for the ark H727 of God. and he cometh in, and lo, Eli is sitting on the throne by the side of the way, watching, for his heart hath been trembling for the ark of God, and the man hath come in to declare it in the city, and all the city crieth out.

When Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “What does the noise of this tumult mean?” The man hurried, and came and told Eli.

And when Eli H5941 heard H8085 (QalImpf) the noise H6963 of the crying, H6818 he said, H559 (QalImpf) What [meaneth] the noise H6963 of this tumult? H1995 And the man H376 came H935 (QalImpf) in hastily, H4116 (PielPerf) and told H5046 (HiphImpf) Eli. H5941

And Eli heareth the noise of the cry, and saith, ‘What-the noise of this tumult!’ And the man hasted, and cometh in, and declareth to Eli.

The man said to Eli, “I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” He said, “How did the matter go, my son?”

And the man H376 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Eli, H5941 I [am] he that came H935 (QalActPtc) out of the army, H4634 and I fled H5127 (QalPerf) to day H3117 out of the army. H4634 And he said, H559 (QalImpf) What is there done, H1697 my son? H1121

And the man saith unto Eli, ‘I am he who hath come out of the ranks, and I out of the ranks have fled to-day;’ and he saith, ‘What hath been the matter, my son?’

Now the Philistines had taken God’s ark, and they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

And the Philistines H6430 took H3947 (QalPerf) the ark H727 of God, H430 and brought H935 (HiphImpf) it from Ebenezer H72 unto Ashdod. H795

And the Philistines have taken the ark of God, and bring it in from Eben-Ezer to Ashdod,
