Now on the third day, Esther put on her royal clothing and stood in the inner court of the king’s house, next to the king’s house. The king sat on his royal throne in the royal house, next to the entrance of the house.

Esther said, “If it seems good to the king, let the king and Haman come today to the banquet that I have prepared for him.”

And Esther H635 answered, H559 (QalImpf) If it seem good H2895 (QalPerf) unto the king, H4428 let the king H4428 and Haman H2001 come H935 (QalImpf) this day H3117 unto the banquet H4960 that I have prepared H6213 (QalPerf) for him.

ειπεν δε εσθηρ ημερα μου επισημος σημερον εστιν ει ουν δοκει τω βασιλει ελθατω και αυτος και αμαν εις την δοχην ην ποιησω σημερον

Then Haman went out that day joyful and glad of heart, but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king’s gate, that he didn’t stand up nor move for him, he was filled with wrath against Mordecai.

On that night, the king couldn’t sleep. He commanded the book of records of the chronicles to be brought, and they were read to the king.

Esther 6:1 Heb. the kings sleep fled away

ο δε κυριος απεστησεν τον υπνον απο του βασιλεως την νυκτα εκεινην και ειπεν τω διδασκαλω αυτου εισφερειν γραμματα μνημοσυνα των ημερων αναγινωσκειν αυτω

The king said again to Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, “What is your petition, queen Esther? It shall be granted you. What is your request? Even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed.”

On that day, King Ahasuerus gave the house of Haman, the Jews’ enemy, to Esther the queen. Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was to her.

A copy of the letter, that the decree should be given out in every province, was published to all the peoples, that the Jews should be ready for that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.

Esther 8:13 Heb. revealed

τα δε αντιγραφα εκτιθεσθωσαν οφθαλμοφανως εν παση τη βασιλεια ετοιμους τε ειναι παντας τους ιουδαιους εις ταυτην την ημεραν πολεμησαι αυτων τους υπεναντιους

In every province and in every city, wherever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had gladness, joy, a feast and a holiday. Many from among the peoples of the land became Jews, for the fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

And in every province, H4082 and in every city, H5892 whithersoever H4725 the king’s H4428 commandment H1697 and his decree H1881 came, H5060 (HiphPtc) the Jews H3064 had joy H8057 and gladness, H8342 a feast H4960 and a good H2896 day. κατα πολιν και χωραν ου αν εξετεθη το προσταγμα ου αν εξετεθη το εκθεμα χαρα και ευφροσυνη τοις ιουδαιοις κωθων και ευφροσυνη και πολλοι των εθνων περιετεμοντο και ιουδαιζον δια τον φοβον των ιουδαιων

Now in the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the month, when the king’s commandment and his decree came near to be put in execution, on the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to conquer them, (but it turned out that the opposite happened, that the Jews conquered those who hated them),

On that day, the number of those who were slain in the citadel of Susa was brought before the king.

Then Esther said, “If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Susa to do tomorrow also according to today’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.”

The Jews who were in Susa gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and killed three hundred men in Susa; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.

For the Jews H3064 that were in Shushan H7800 gathered themselves together H6950 (NiphImpf) on the fourteenth H702 H6240 day H3117 also of the month H2320 Adar, H143 and slew H2026 (QalImpf) three H7969 hundred H3967 men H376 at Shushan; H7800 but on the prey H961 they laid H7971 (QalPerf) not their hand. as the days in which the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned to them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending presents of food to one another, and gifts to the needy.

Therefore they called these days “Purim”,° from the word “Pur.” Therefore because of all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and that which had come to them,

Esther 9:26 Purim is the Hebrew plural for pur, which means lot.

Wherefore they called H7121 (QalPerf) these days H3117 Pur°im H6332 after the name H8034 of Pur. H6332 Therefore for all the words H1697 of this letter, H107 and of that which they had seen H7200 (QalPerf) concerning this matter, H3602 and which had come H5060 (HiphPerf) unto them,

Esther 9:26 that is, Lot

δια τουτο επεκληθησαν αι ημεραι αυται φρουραι δια τους κληρους οτι τη διαλεκτω αυτων καλουνται φρουραι δια τους λογους της επιστολης ταυτης και οσα πεπονθασιν δια ταυτα και οσα αυτοις εγενετο

the Jews established and imposed on themselves, on their descendants, and on all those who joined themselves to them, so that it should not fail that they would keep these two days according to what was written and according to its appointed time every year;

and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor their memory perish from their offspring.^§

Esther 9:28 or, seed

and that these days H3117 should be remembered H2142 (NiphPtc) and kept H6213 (NiphPtc) throughout H1755 every generation, H1755 every family, H4940 every province, H4082 and every city; H5892 and that these days H3117 of Purim H6332 should not fail^§ H5674 (QalImpf) from among H8432 the Jews, H3064 nor the memorial H2143 of them perish^§ H5486 (QalImpf) from their seed. και μαρδοχαιος και εσθηρ η βασιλισσα εστησαν εαυτοις καθ εαυτων και τοτε στησαντες κατα της υγιειας αυτων και την βουλην αυτων

Aren’t all the acts of his power and of his might, and the full account of the greatness of Mordecai, to which the king advanced him, written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia?

His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.

Now on the day when God’s sons came to present themselves before Yahweh,^§ Satan also came among them.

Job 1:6 “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “Lord” (all caps) in other translations.

After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed the day of his birth.

απολοιτο η ημερα εν η εγεννηθην και η νυξ εν η ειπαν ιδου αρσεν

Let that day be darkness. Don’t let God from above seek for it, neither let the light shine on it.

Let that day H3117 be darkness; H2822 Let not God H433 regard H1875 (QalImpf) it from above, H4605 Neither let the light H5105 shine H3313 (HiphImpf) upon it.

η ημερα εκεινη ειη σκοτος και μη αναζητησαι αυτην ο κυριος ανωθεν μηδε ελθοι εις αυτην φεγγος
