When Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I can’t tell.”

And when Saul H7586 saw H7200 (QalInf) David H1732 go forth H3318 (QalActPtc) against H7125 (QalInf) the Philistine, H6430 he said H559 (QalPerf) unto Abner, H74 the captain H8269 of the host, H6635 Abner, H74 whose son H1121 [is] this youth? The king said, “Inquire whose son the young man is!”

And the king H4428 said, H559 (QalImpf) Enquire H7592 (QalImpv) thou whose son H1121 the stripling H5958 [is].

As they came, when David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul with tambourines, with joy, and with instruments of music.

And it came to pass as they came, H935 (QalInf) when David H1732 was returned H7725 (QalInf) from the slaughter H5221 (HiphInf) of the Philistine, H6430 that the women H802 came out H3318 (QalImpf) of all cities H5892 of Israel, H3478 singing H7891 (QalInf) and dancing, H4246 to meet H7125 (QalInf) king H4428 Saul, H7586 with tabrets, H8596 with joy, H8057 and with instruments of musick. και εξηλθον αι χορευουσαι εις συναντησιν δαυιδ εκ πασων πολεων ισραηλ εν τυμπανοις και εν χαρμοσυνη και εν κυμβαλοις

David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my life, or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?”

And David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Saul, H7586 Who [am] I? and what [is] my life, H2416 [or] my father’s H1 family H4940 in Israel, H3478 that I should be son in law H2860 to the king? H4428

Saul commanded his servants, “Talk with David secretly, and say, ‘Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. Now therefore be the king’s son-in-law.’ ”

And Saul H7586 commanded H6680 (PielImpf) his servants, H5650 [saying], Commune H1696 (PielImpv) with David H1732 secretly, H3909 and say, H559 (QalInf) Behold, the king H4428 hath delight H2654 (QalPerf) in thee, and all his servants H5650 love H157 (QalPerf) thee: now therefore be the king’s H4428 son in law. και ενετειλατο σαουλ τοις παισιν αυτου λεγων λαλησατε υμεις λαθρα τω δαυιδ λεγοντες ιδου ο βασιλευς θελει εν σοι και παντες οι παιδες αυτου αγαπωσιν σε και συ επιγαμβρευσον τω βασιλει

Saul’s servants spoke those words in the ears of David. David said, “Does it seem to you a light thing to be the king’s son-in-law, since I am a poor man and little known?”

Saul said, “Tell David, ‘The king desires no dowry except one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies.’ ” Now Saul thought he would make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

When his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law. Before the deadline,

και απαγγελλουσιν οι παιδες σαουλ τω δαυιδ τα ρηματα ταυτα και ευθυνθη ο λογος εν οφθαλμοις δαυιδ επιγαμβρευσαι τω βασιλει

David arose and went, he and his men, and killed two hundred men of the Philistines. Then David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might be the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him Michal his daughter as wife.

Jonathan spoke good of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Don’t let the king sin against his servant, against David; because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you;

David said to Jonathan, “Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to dine with the king; but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field to the third day at evening.

και ειπεν δαυιδ προς ιωναθαν ιδου δη νεομηνια αυριον και εγω καθισας ου καθησομαι μετα του βασιλεως φαγειν και εξαποστελεις με και κρυβησομαι εν τω πεδιω εως δειλης

So David hid himself in the field. When the new moon had come, the king sat himself down to eat food.

The king sat on his seat, as at other times, even on the seat by the wall; and Jonathan stood up, and Abner sat by Saul’s side, but David’s place was empty.

He said, ‘Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city. My brother has commanded me to be there. Now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go away and see my brothers.’ Therefore he has not come to the king’s table.”

και ειπεν εξαποστειλον δη με οτι θυσια της φυλης ημιν εν τη πολει και ενετειλαντο προς με οι αδελφοι μου και νυν ει ευρηκα χαριν εν οφθαλμοις σου διασωθησομαι δη και οψομαι τους αδελφους μου δια τουτο ου παραγεγονεν επι την τραπεζαν του βασιλεως

David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has commanded me to do something, and has said to me, ‘Let no one know anything about the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you. I have sent the young men to a certain place.’

^[21:3] και ειπεν δαυιδ τω ιερει ο βασιλευς εντεταλται μοι ρημα σημερον και ειπεν μοι μηδεις γνωτω το ρημα περι ου εγω αποστελλω σε και υπερ ου εντεταλμαι σοι και τοις παιδαριοις διαμεμαρτυρημαι εν τω τοπω τω λεγομενω θεου πιστις φελλανι αλεμωνι

David said to Ahimelech, “Isn’t there here under your hand spear or sword? For I haven’t brought my sword or my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.”

David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

The servants of Achish said to him, “Isn’t this David the king of the land? Didn’t they sing to one another about him in dances, saying, ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?”

David laid up these words in his heart, and was very afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother come out to you, until I know what God will do for me.”

He brought them before the king of Moab; and they lived with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.

Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were in Nob; and they all came to the king.

Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, “Who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, captain of your body guard, and honored in your house?

Have I today begun to inquire of God for him? Be it far from me! Don’t let the king impute anything to his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for your servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.”

Did I then H3117 begin H2490 (HiphPerf) to enquire H7592 (QalInf) of God H430 for him? be it far from me: H2486 let not the king H4428 impute H7760 (QalImpf) [any] thing H1697 unto his servant, H5650 [nor] to all the house H1004 of my father: H1 for thy servant H5650 knew H3045 (QalPerf) nothing H1697 of all this, less H6996 or more. η σημερον ηργμαι ερωταν αυτω δια του θεου μηδαμως μη δοτω ο βασιλευς κατα του δουλου αυτου λογον και εφ ολον τον οικον του πατρος μου οτι ουκ ηδει ο δουλος ο σος εν πασιν τουτοις ρημα μικρον η μεγα

The king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house.”

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς σαουλ θανατω αποθανη αβιμελεχ συ και πας ο οικος του πατρος σου

The king said to the guard who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of Yahweh, because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled and didn’t disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king wouldn’t put out their hand to fall on the priests of Yahweh.

And the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the footmen H7323 (QalPtc) that stood H5324 (NiphPtc) about him, Turn, H5437 (QalImpv) and slay H4191 (HiphImpv) the priests H3548 of the Lord; H3068 because their hand H3027 also [is] with David, H1732 and because they knew H3045 (QalPerf) when he fled, H1272 (QalActPtc) and did not shew H1540 (QalPerf) H241 it to me. But the servants H5650 of the king H4428 would H14 (QalPerf) not put forth H7971 (QalInf) their hand H3027 to fall H6293 (QalInf) upon the priests H3548 of the Lord. H3068

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς τοις παρατρεχουσιν τοις εφεστηκοσιν επ αυτον προσαγαγετε και θανατουτε τους ιερεις του κυριου οτι η χειρ αυτων μετα δαυιδ και οτι εγνωσαν οτι φευγει αυτος και ουκ απεκαλυψαν το ωτιον μου και ουκ εβουληθησαν οι παιδες του βασιλεως επενεγκειν τας χειρας αυτων απαντησαι εις τους ιερεις κυριου

The king said to Doeg, “Turn and attack the priests!” Doeg the Edomite turned, and he attacked the priests, and he killed on that day eighty-five people who wore a linen ephod.

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς τω δωηκ επιστρεφου συ και απαντα εις τους ιερεις και επεστραφη δωηκ ο συρος και εθανατωσεν τους ιερεις κυριου εν τη ημερα εκεινη τριακοσιους και πεντε ανδρας παντας αιροντας εφουδ

Now therefore, O king, come down. According to all the desire of your soul to come down; and our part will be to deliver him up into the king’s hand.”

David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave and cried after Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and showed respect.

Abigail came to Nabal; and behold, he held a feast in his house like the feast of a king. Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. Therefore she told him nothing until the morning light.

David said to Abner, “Aren’t you a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy your lord the king.

και ειπεν δαυιδ προς αβεννηρ ουκ ανηρ συ και τις ως συ εν ισραηλ και δια τι ου φυλασσεις τον κυριον σου τον βασιλεα οτι εισηλθεν εις εκ του λαου διαφθειραι τον βασιλεα κυριον σου

This thing isn’t good that you have done. As Yahweh lives, you are worthy to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, Yahweh’s anointed. Now see where the king’s spear is, and the jar of water that was at his head.”

και ουκ αγαθον το ρημα τουτο ο πεποιηκας ζη κυριος οτι υιοι θανατωσεως υμεις οι φυλασσοντες τον βασιλεα κυριον υμων τον χριστον κυριου και νυν ιδε δη το δορυ του βασιλεως και ο φακος του υδατος που εστιν τα προς κεφαλης αυτου

Saul recognized David’s voice, and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.”

και επεγνω σαουλ την φωνην του δαυιδ και ειπεν η φωνη σου αυτη τεκνον δαυιδ και ειπεν δαυιδ δουλος σου κυριε βασιλευ

Now therefore, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is so that Yahweh has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering. But if it is the children of men, they are cursed before Yahweh; for they have driven me out today that I shouldn’t cling to Yahweh’s inheritance, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods!’

Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord H113 the king H4428 hear H8085 (QalImpf) the words H1697 of his servant. και νυν ακουσατω δη ο κυριος μου ο βασιλευς το ρημα του δουλου αυτου ει ο θεος επισειει σε επ εμε οσφρανθειη θυσιας σου και ει υιοι ανθρωπων επικαταρατοι ουτοι ενωπιον κυριου οτι εξεβαλον με σημερον μη εστηρισθαι εν κληρονομια κυριου λεγοντες πορευου δουλευε θεοις ετεροις

Now therefore, don’t let my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of Yahweh; for the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains.”

και νυν μη πεσοι το αιμα μου επι την γην εξ εναντιας προσωπου κυριου οτι εξεληλυθεν ο βασιλευς ισραηλ ζητειν την ψυχην μου καθως καταδιωκει ο νυκτικοραξ εν τοις ορεσιν

David answered, “Behold the spear, O king! Let one of the young men come over and get it.

και απεκριθη δαυιδ και ειπεν ιδου το δορυ του βασιλεως διελθετω εις των παιδαριων και λαβετω αυτο

David arose and passed over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: therefore Ziklag belongs to the kings of Judah to this day.

The king said to her, “Don’t be afraid! What do you see?” The woman said to Saul, “I see a god coming up out of the earth.”

και ειπεν αυτη ο βασιλευς μη φοβου ειπον τινα εορακας και ειπεν αυτω θεους εορακα αναβαινοντας εκ της γης

Then the princes of the Philistines said, “What about these Hebrews?” Achish said to the princes of the Philistines, “Isn’t this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, who has been with me these days, or rather these years? I have found no fault in him since he fell away until today.”

και ειπον οι σατραπαι των αλλοφυλων τινες οι διαπορευομενοι ουτοι και ειπεν αγχους προς τους στρατηγους των αλλοφυλων ουχ ουτος δαυιδ ο δουλος σαουλ βασιλεως ισραηλ γεγονεν μεθ ημων ημερας τουτο δευτερον ετος και ουχ ευρηκα εν αυτω ουθεν αφ ης ημερας ενεπεσεν προς με και εως της ημερας ταυτης

David said to Achish, “But what have I done? What have you found in your servant so long as I have been before you to this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”

και ειπεν δαυιδ προς αγχους τι πεποιηκα σοι και τι ευρες εν τω δουλω σου αφ ης ημερας ημην ενωπιον σου και εως της ημερας ταυτης οτι ου μη ελθω πολεμησαι τους εχθρους του κυριου μου του βασιλεως

The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, “The men of Jabesh Gilead were those who buried Saul.”

και ερχονται ανδρες της ιουδαιας και χριουσιν τον δαυιδ εκει του βασιλευειν επι τον οικον ιουδα και απηγγειλαν τω δαυιδ λεγοντες οτι οι ανδρες ιαβις της γαλααδιτιδος εθαψαν τον σαουλ

Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.”

και νυν κραταιουσθωσαν αι χειρες υμων και γινεσθε εις υιους δυνατους οτι τεθνηκεν ο κυριος υμων σαουλ και γε εμε κεχρικεν ο οικος ιουδα εφ εαυτους εις βασιλεα

The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, “In times past, you sought for David to be king over you.

και ειπεν αβεννηρ προς τους πρεσβυτερους ισραηλ λεγων εχθες και τριτην εζητειτε τον δαυιδ βασιλευειν εφ υμων

Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may reign over all that your soul desires.” David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.
