There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God,^§ and turned away from evil.

Job 1:1 The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).

There was a man H376 in the land H776 of Uz, H5780 whose name H8034 [was] Job; H347 and that man H376 was perfect H8535 and upright, H3477 and one that feared H3373 God, H430 and eschewed H5493 (QalActPtc) evil. H7451

ανθρωπος τις ην εν χωρα τη αυσιτιδι ω ονομα ιωβ και ην ο ανθρωπος εκεινος αληθινος αμεμπτος δικαιος θεοσεβης απεχομενος απο παντος πονηρου πραγματος

It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.

και ως αν συνετελεσθησαν αι ημεραι του ποτου απεστελλεν ιωβ και εκαθαριζεν αυτους ανισταμενος το πρωι και προσεφερεν περι αυτων θυσιας κατα τον αριθμον αυτων και μοσχον ενα περι αμαρτιας περι των ψυχων αυτων ελεγεν γαρ ιωβ μηποτε οι υιοι μου εν τη διανοια αυτων κακα ενενοησαν προς θεον ουτως ουν εποιει ιωβ πασας τας ημερας

Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Satan, H7854 Hast thou considered H7760 (QalPerf) H3820 my servant H5650 Job, H347 that [there is] none like him in the earth, H776 a perfect H8535 and an upright H3477 man, H376 one that feareth H3373 God, H430 and escheweth H5493 (QalActPtc) evil? και ειπεν αυτω ο κυριος προσεσχες τη διανοια σου κατα του παιδος μου ιωβ οτι ουκ εστιν κατ αυτον των επι της γης ανθρωπος αμεμπτος αληθινος θεοσεβης απεχομενος απο παντος πονηρου πραγματος

Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?

Then Satan H7854 answered H6030 (QalImpf) the Lord, H3068 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Doth Job H347 fear H3372 (QalPerf) God H430 for nought? H2600

απεκριθη δε ο διαβολος και ειπεν εναντιον του κυριου μη δωρεαν σεβεται ιωβ τον θεον

that a messenger came to Job, and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them,

And there came H935 (QalPerf) a messenger H4397 unto Job, H347 and said, H559 (QalImpf) The oxen H1241 were plowing, H2790 (QalActPtc) and the asses H860 feeding H7462 (QalActPtc) beside H3027 them:

και ιδου αγγελος ηλθεν προς ιωβ και ειπεν αυτω τα ζευγη των βοων ηροτρια και αι θηλειαι ονοι εβοσκοντο εχομεναι αυτων

Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped.

Then Job H347 arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and rent H7167 (QalImpf) his mantle, H4598 and shaved H1494 (QalImpf) his head, H7218 and fell down H5307 (QalImpf) upon the ground, H776 and worshipped, H7812 (HithImpf)

ουτως αναστας ιωβ διερρηξεν τα ιματια αυτου και εκειρατο την κομην της κεφαλης αυτου και πεσων χαμαι προσεκυνησεν και ειπεν

In all this, Job didn’t sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing.

In all this Job H347 sinned H2398 (QalPerf) not, nor charged H5414 (QalPerf) God H430 foolishly. H8604

εν τουτοις πασιν τοις συμβεβηκοσιν αυτω ουδεν ημαρτεν ιωβ εναντιον του κυριου και ουκ εδωκεν αφροσυνην τω θεω

Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil. He still maintains his integrity, although you incited me against him, to ruin him without cause.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Satan, H7854 Hast thou H7760 (QalPerf) considered H3820 my servant H5650 Job, H347 that [there is] none like him in the earth, H776 a perfect H8535 and an upright H3477 man, H376 one that feareth H3373 God, H430 and escheweth H5493 (QalActPtc) evil? H7451 and still he holdeth fast H2388 (HiphPtc) his integrity, H8538 although thou movedst H5496 (HiphImpf) me against him, to destroy H1104 (PielInf) him without cause. H2600

ειπεν δε ο κυριος προς τον διαβολον προσεσχες ουν τω θεραποντι μου ιωβ οτι ουκ εστιν κατ αυτον των επι της γης ανθρωπος ακακος αληθινος αμεμπτος θεοσεβης απεχομενος απο παντος κακου ετι δε εχεται ακακιας συ δε ειπας τα υπαρχοντα αυτου δια κενης απολεσαι

So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh, and struck Job with painful sores from the sole of his foot to his head.

So went H3318 Satan H7854 forth H3318 (QalImpf) from the presence H6440 of the Lord, H3068 and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) Job H347 with sore H7451 boils H7822 from the sole H3709 of his foot H7272 unto his crown. H6936

εξηλθεν δε ο διαβολος απο του κυριου και επαισεν τον ιωβ ελκει πονηρω απο ποδων εως κεφαλης

But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job didn’t sin with his lips.

But he said H559 (QalImpf) unto her, Thou speakest H1696 (PielImpf) as one H259 of the foolish women H5036 speaketh. H1696 (PielInf) What? ο δε εμβλεψας ειπεν αυτη ωσπερ μια των αφρονων γυναικων ελαλησας ει τα αγαθα εδεξαμεθα εκ χειρος κυριου τα κακα ουχ υποισομεν εν πασιν τουτοις τοις συμβεβηκοσιν αυτω ουδεν ημαρτεν ιωβ τοις χειλεσιν εναντιον του θεου

Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him.

Now when Job’s H347 three H7969 friends H7453 heard H8085 (QalImpf) of all this evil H7451 that was come H935 (QalActPtc) upon him, they came H935 (QalImpf) every one H376 from his own place; H4725 Eliphaz H464 the Temanite, H8489 and Bildad H1085 the Shuhite, H7747 and Zophar H6691 the Naamathite: H5284 for they had made an appointment H3259 (NiphImpf) together H3162 to come H935 (QalInf) to mourn H5110 (QalInf) with him and to comfort H5162 (PielInf) him.

After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed the day of his birth.

μετα τουτο ηνοιξεν ιωβ το στομα αυτου

Job answered:

αντι πυρου αρα εξελθοι μοι κνιδη αντι δε κριθης βατος και επαυσατο ιωβ ρημασιν

So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

So these three H7969 men H582 ceased H7673 (QalImpf) to answer H6030 (QalInf) Job, H347 because he [was] righteous H6662 in his own eyes. H5869

ησυχασαν δε και οι τρεις φιλοι αυτου ετι αντειπειν ιωβ ην γαρ ιωβ δικαιος εναντιον αυτων

Then the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel, the Buzite, of the family of Ram, was kindled against Job. His wrath was kindled because he justified himself rather than God.

Then was kindled H2734 (QalImpf) the wrath H639 of Elihu H453 the son H1121 of Barachel H1292 the Buzite, H940 of the kindred H4940 of Ram: H7410 against Job H347 was his wrath H639 kindled, H2734 (QalPerf) because he justified H6663 (PielInf) himself H5315 rather than God. H430

ωργισθη δε ελιους ο του βαραχιηλ ο βουζιτης εκ της συγγενειας ραμ της αυσιτιδος χωρας ωργισθη δε τω ιωβ σφοδρα διοτι απεφηνεν εαυτον δικαιον εναντιον κυριου

Also his wrath was kindled against his three friends, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

Also against his three H7969 friends H7453 was his wrath H639 kindled, H2734 (QalPerf) because they had found H4672 (QalPerf) no answer, H4617 and [yet] had condemned H7561 (HiphImpf) Job. H347

και κατα των τριων δε φιλων ωργισθη σφοδρα διοτι ουκ ηδυνηθησαν αποκριθηναι αντιθετα ιωβ και εθεντο αυτον ειναι ασεβη

Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job, because they were older than he.

Now Elihu H453 had waited H2442 (PielPerf) till Job H347 had spoken, H1697 because they [were] elder H2205 H3117 than he.

ελιους δε υπεμεινεν δουναι αποκρισιν ιωβ οτι πρεσβυτεροι αυτου εισιν ημεραις

Yes, I gave you my full attention, but there was no one who convinced Job, or who answered his words, among you.

Yea, I attended H995 (HiplImpf) unto you, and, behold, [there was] none of you that convinced H3198 (HiphPtc) Job, H347 [or] that answered H6030 (QalActPtc) his words: H561

και μεχρι υμων συνησω και ιδου ουκ ην τω ιωβ ελεγχων ανταποκρινομενος ρηματα αυτου εξ υμων

“However, Job, please hear my speech, and listen to all my words.

Wherefore, H199 Job, H347 I pray thee, hear H8085 (QalImpv) my speeches, H4405 and hearken H238 (HiphImpv) to all my words. H1697

ου μην δε αλλα ακουσον ιωβ τα ρηματα μου και λαλιαν ενωτιζου μου

Mark well, Job, and listen to me. Hold your peace, and I will speak.

ενωτιζου ιωβ και ακουε μου κωφευσον και εγω ειμι λαλησω

For Job has said, ‘I am righteous, God has taken away my right.

οτι ειρηκεν ιωβ δικαιος ειμι ο κυριος απηλλαξεν μου το κριμα

What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water,

τις ανηρ ωσπερ ιωβ πινων μυκτηρισμον ωσπερ υδωρ

‘Job speaks without knowledge. His words are without wisdom.’

Job H347 hath spoken H1696 (PielImpf) without knowledge, H1847 and his words H1697 [were] without wisdom. H7919 (HiphInf)

ιωβ δε ουκ εν συνεσει ελαλησεν τα δε ρηματα αυτου ουκ εν επιστημη

I wish that Job were tried to the end, because of his answering like wicked men.

“Listen to this, Job. Stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind,

μετα δε το παυσασθαι ελιουν της λεξεως ειπεν ο κυριος τω ιωβ δια λαιλαπος και νεφων

Then Job answered Yahweh,

Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind:

Then Job answered Yahweh:

It was so, that after Yahweh had spoken these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends; for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

And it was [so], that after H310 the Lord H3068 had spoken H1696 (PielPerf) these words H1697 unto Job, H347 the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) to Eliphaz H464 the Temanite, H8489 My wrath H639 is kindled H2734 (QalPerf) against thee, and against thy two H8147 friends: H7453 for ye have not spoken H1696 (PielPerf) of me [the thing that is] right, H3559 (NiphPtc) as my servant H5650 Job H347 [hath].

εγενετο δε μετα το λαλησαι τον κυριον παντα τα ρηματα ταυτα τω ιωβ ειπεν ο κυριος ελιφας τω θαιμανιτη ημαρτες συ και οι δυο φιλοι σου ου γαρ ελαλησατε ενωπιον μου αληθες ουδεν ωσπερ ο θεραπων μου ιωβ

Now therefore, take to yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will accept him, that I not deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.”

Therefore take H3947 (QalImpv) unto you now seven H7651 bullocks H6499 and seven H7651 rams, H352 and go H3212 (QalImpv) to my servant H5650 Job, H347 and offer up H5927 (HiphPerf) for yourselves a burnt offering; H5930 and my servant H5650 Job H347 shall pray H6419 (HithImpf) for you: for him H6440 will I accept: H5375 (QalImpf) lest I deal H6213 (QalInf) with you [after your] folly, H5039 in that ye have not spoken H1696 (PielPerf) of me [the thing which is] right, H3559 (NiphPtc) like my servant H5650 Job. νυν δε λαβετε επτα μοσχους και επτα κριους και πορευθητε προς τον θεραποντα μου ιωβ και ποιησει καρπωσιν περι υμων ιωβ δε ο θεραπων μου ευξεται περι υμων οτι ει μη προσωπον αυτου λημψομαι ει μη γαρ δι αυτον απωλεσα αν υμας ου γαρ ελαλησατε αληθες κατα του θεραποντος μου ιωβ

So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did what Yahweh commanded them, and Yahweh accepted Job.

So Eliphaz H464 the Temanite H8489 and Bildad H1085 the Shuhite H7747 [and] Zophar H6691 the Naamathite H5284 went, H3212 (QalImpf) and did H6213 (QalImpf) according as the Lord H3068 commanded H1696 (PielPerf) them: the Lord H3068 also accepted H5375 (QalImpf) Job. H6440 H347

επορευθη δε ελιφας ο θαιμανιτης και βαλδαδ ο σαυχιτης και σωφαρ ο μιναιος και εποιησαν καθως συνεταξεν αυτοις ο κυριος και ελυσεν την αμαρτιαν αυτοις δια ιωβ

Yahweh restored Job’s prosperity when he prayed for his friends. Yahweh gave Job twice as much as he had before.

And the Lord H3068 turned H7725 (QalPerf) the captivity H7622 (Qere) H7622 of Job, H347 when he prayed H6419 (HithInf) for his friends: H7453 also the Lord H3068 gave H3254 (HiphImpf) Job H347 twice as much H4932 as he had before.

ο δε κυριος ηυξησεν τον ιωβ ευξαμενου δε αυτου και περι των φιλων αυτου αφηκεν αυτοις την αμαρτιαν εδωκεν δε ο κυριος διπλα οσα ην εμπροσθεν ιωβ εις διπλασιασμον

So Yahweh blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand female donkeys.

So the Lord H3068 blessed H1288 (PielPerf) the latter end H319 of Job H347 more than his beginning: H7225 for he had fourteen H702 H6240 thousand H505 sheep, H6629 and six H8337 thousand H505 camels, H1581 and a thousand H505 yoke H6776 of oxen, H1241 and a thousand H505 she asses. H860

ο δε κυριος ευλογησεν τα εσχατα ιωβ η τα εμπροσθεν ην δε τα κτηνη αυτου προβατα μυρια τετρακισχιλια καμηλοι εξακισχιλιαι ζευγη βοων χιλια ονοι θηλειαι νομαδες χιλιαι

In all the land were no women found so beautiful as the daughters of Job. Their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers.

And in all the land H776 were no women H802 found H4672 (NiphPerf) [so] fair H3303 as the daughters H1323 of Job: H347 and their father H1 gave H5414 (QalImpf) them inheritance H5159 among H8432 their brethren. H251

και ουχ ευρεθησαν κατα τας θυγατερας ιωβ βελτιους αυτων εν τη υπ ουρανον εδωκεν δε αυταις ο πατηρ κληρονομιαν εν τοις αδελφοις

After this Job lived one hundred forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, to four generations.

εζησεν δε ιωβ μετα την πληγην ετη εκατον εβδομηκοντα τα δε παντα εζησεν ετη διακοσια τεσσαρακοντα οκτω και ειδεν ιωβ τους υιους αυτου και τους υιους των υιων αυτου τεταρτην γενεαν

So Job died, being old and full of days.
