[1] The revelation which Habakkuk the prophet saw. [2] Yahweh,§ how long will I cry, and you will not hear? I cry out to you “Violence!” and will you not save? [3] Why do you show me iniquity, and look at perversity? For destruction and violence are before me. There is strife, and contention rises up. [4] Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails; for the wicked surround the righteous; therefore justice comes out perverted. [5] “Look among the nations, watch, and wonder marvelously; for I am working a work in your days which you will not believe though it is told you. [6] For, behold,§ I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation who march through the width of the earth, to possess dwelling places that are not theirs. [7] They are feared and dreaded. Their judgment and their dignity proceed from themselves. [8] Their horses also are swifter than leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves. Their horsemen press proudly on. Yes, their horsemen come from afar. They fly as an eagle that hurries to devour. [9] All of them come for violence. Their hordes face forward. They gather prisoners like sand. [10] Yes, they scoff at kings, and princes are a derision to them. They laugh at every stronghold, for they build up an earthen ramp and take it. [11] Then they sweep by like the wind and go on. They are indeed guilty, whose strength is their god.” [12] Aren’t you from everlasting, Yahweh my God,§ my Holy One? We will not die. Yahweh, you have appointed them for judgment. You, Rock, have established him to punish. [13] You who have purer eyes than to see evil, and who cannot look on perversity, why do you tolerate those who deal treacherously and keep silent when the wicked swallows up the man who is more righteous than he, [14] and make men like the fish of the sea, like the creeping things that have no ruler over them? [15] He takes up all of them with the hook. He catches them in his net and gathers them in his dragnet. Therefore he rejoices and is glad. [16] Therefore he sacrifices to his net and burns incense to his dragnet, because by them his life is luxurious and his food is good. [17] Will he therefore continually empty his net, and kill the nations without mercy?

Footnotes

  2. “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.
  3. The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).

[1] The burdenH4853 which HabakkukH2265 the prophetH5030 did see.H2372(QalPerf) [2] O Lord,H3068 how long shall I cry,H7768(PielPerf) and thou wilt not hear!H8085(QalImpf) [even] cry outH2199(QalImpf) unto thee [of] violence,H2555 and thou wilt not save!H3467(HiphImpf) [3] Why dost thou shewH7200(HiphImpf) me iniquity,H205 and cause [me] to beholdH5027(HiphImpf) grievance?H5999 for spoilingH7701 and violenceH2555 [are] before me: and there are [that] raise upH5375(QalImpf) strifeH7379 and contention.H4066 [4] Therefore the lawH8451 is slacked,H6313(QalImpf) and judgmentH4941 doth neverH5331 go forth:H3318(QalImpf) for the wickedH7563 doth compassH3803(HiphPtc) about the righteous;H6662 therefore wrongH6127(PualPtc) judgmentH4941 proceedeth.H3318(QalImpf) [5] BeholdH7200(QalImpv) ye among the heathen,H1471 and regard,H5027(HiphImpv) and wonderH8539(HithImpv) marvellously:H8539(QalImpv) for [I] will workH6466(QalActPtc) a workH6467 in your days,H3117 [which] ye will not believe,H539(HiphImpf) though it be toldH5608(PualImpf) [you]. [6] For, lo, I raise upH6965(HiphPtc) the Chaldeans,H3778 [that] bitterH4751 and hastyH4116(NiphPtc) nation,H1471 which shall marchH1980(QalActPtc) through the breadthH4800 of the land,H776 to possessH3423(QalInf) the dwellingplacesH4908 [that are] not theirs. [7] They [are] terribleH366 and dreadful:H3372(NiphPtc) their judgmentH4941 and their dignityH7613 shall proceedH3318(QalImpf) of themselves. [8] Their horsesH5483 also are swifterH7043(QalPerf) than the leopards,H5246 and are more fierceH2300(QalPerf) than the eveningH6153 wolves:H2061 and their horsemenH6571 shall spreadH6335(QalPerf) themselves, and their horsemenH6571 shall comeH935(QalImpf) from far;H7350 they shall flyH5774(QalImpf) as the eagleH5404 [that] hastethH2363(QalPerf) to eat.H398(QalInf) [9] They shall comeH935(QalImpf) all for violence:H2555 their facesH6440 shall sup upH4041 [as] the east wind,H6921 and they shall gatherH622(QalImpf) the captivityH7628 as the sand.H2344 [10] And they shall scoffH7046(HithImpf) at the kings,H4428 and the princesH7336(QalActPtc) shall be a scornH4890 unto them: they shall derideH7832(QalImpf) every strong hold;H4013 for they shall heapH6651(QalImpf) dust,H6083 and takeH3920(QalImpf) it. [11] Then shall [his] mindH7307 change,H2498(QalPerf) and he shall pass over,H5674(QalImpf) and offend,H816(QalPerf) [imputing] thisH2098 his powerH3581 unto his god.H433 [12] [Art] thou not from everlasting,H6924 O LordH3068 my God,H430 mine Holy One?H6918 we shall not die.H4191(QalImpf) O Lord,H3068 thou hast ordainedH7760(QalPerf) them for judgment;H4941 and, O mighty God,H6697 thou hast establishedH3245(QalPerf) them for correction.H3198(HiphInf) [13] [Thou art] of purerH2889 eyesH5869 than to beholdH7200(QalInf) evil,H7451 and canstH3201(QalImpf) not lookH5027(HiphInf) on iniquity:H5999 wherefore lookestH5027(HiphImpf) thou upon them that deal treacherously,H898(QalActPtc) [and] holdest thy tongueH2790(HiphImpf) when the wickedH7563 devourethH1104(PielInf) [the man that is] more righteousH6662 than he? [14] And makestH6213(QalImpf) menH120 as the fishesH1709 of the sea,H3220 as the creeping things,H7431 [that have] no rulerH4910(QalActPtc) over them? [15] They take upH5927(HiphPerf) all of them with the angle,H2443 they catchH1641(QalImpf) them in their net,H2764 and gatherH622(QalImpf) them in their drag:H4365 therefore they rejoiceH8055(QalImpf) and are glad.H1523(QalImpf) [16] Therefore they sacrificeH2076(PielImpf) unto their net,H2764 and burn incenseH6999(PielImpf) unto their drag;H4365 because by themH1992 their portionH2506 [is] fat,H8082 and their meatH3978 plenteous.H1277 [17] Shall they therefore emptyH7324(HiphImpf) their net,H2764 and not spareH2550(QalImpf) continuallyH8548 to slayH2026(QalInf) the nations?H1471
