I contended with them, cursed them, struck certain of them, plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.

And I strive with them, and declare them vile, and smite certain of them, and pluck off their hair, and cause them to swear by God, ‘Ye do not give your daughters to their sons, nor do ye take of their daughters to your sons, and to yourselves.

Thus I cleansed them from all foreigners and appointed duties for the priests and for the Levites, everyone in his work;

And I have cleansed them from every stranger, and appoint charges to priests and to Levites, each in his work,

In accordance with the law, the drinking was not compulsory; for so the king had instructed all the officials of his house, that they should do according to every man’s pleasure.

And the drinking is according to law, none is pressing, for so hath the king appointed for every chief one of his house, to do according to the pleasure of man and man.

for he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to its writing, and to every people in their language, that every man should rule his own house, speaking in the language of his own people.

and sendeth letters unto all provinces of the king, unto province and province according to its writing, and unto people and people according to its tongue, for every man being head in his own house-and speaking according to the language of his people.

There was a certain Jew in the citadel of Susa whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite,

[Now] in Shushan H7800 the palace H1002 there was a certain H376 Jew, H3064 whose name H8034 [was] Mordecai, H4782 the son H1121 of Jair, H2971 the son H1121 of Shimei, H8096 the son H1121 of Kish, H7027 a Benjamite; H1145

A man, a Jew, there hath been in Shushan the palace, and his name is Mordecai son of Jair, son of Shimei, son of Kish, a Benjamite-

“All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s provinces know that whoever, whether man or woman, comes to the king into the inner court without being called, there is one law for him, that he be put to death, except those to whom the king might hold out the golden scepter, that he may live. I have not been called to come in to the king these thirty days.”

All the king’s H4428 servants, H5650 and the people H5971 of the king’s H4428 provinces, H4082 do know, H3045 (QalActPtc) that whosoever, whether man H376 or woman, H802 shall come H935 (QalImpf) unto the king H4428 into the inner H6442 court, H2691 who is not called, H7121 (NiphImpf) [there is] one H259 law H1881 of his to put [him] to death, H4191 (HiphInf) except H905 such to whom the king H4428 shall hold out H3447 (HiphImpf) the golden H2091 sceptre, H8275 that he may live: H2421 (QalPerf) but I have not been called H7121 (NiphPerf) to come in H935 (QalInf) unto the king H4428 these thirty H7970 days. ‘All servants of the king, and people of the provinces of the king, do know that any man and woman, who cometh in unto the king, unto the inner court, who is not called-one law of his is to put them to death, apart from him to whom the king holdeth out the golden sceptre, then he hath lived; and I-I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.’

So Haman came in. The king said to him, “What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor?” Now Haman said in his heart, “Who would the king delight to honor more than myself?”

And Haman cometh in, and the king saith to him, ‘What-to do with the man in whose honour the king hath delighted?’ And Haman saith in his heart, ‘To whom doth the king delight to do honour more than myself?’

Haman said to the king, “For the man whom the king delights to honor,

And Haman saith unto the king, ‘The man in whose honour the king hath delighted,

Let the clothing and the horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that they may array the man whom the king delights to honor with them, and have him ride on horseback through the city square, and proclaim before him, ‘Thus it shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!’ ”

and to give the clothing and the horse into the hand of a man of the heads of the king, the chiefs, and they have clothed the man in whose honour the king hath delighted, and caused him to ride on the horse in a broad place of the city, and called before him: Thus it is done to the man in whose honour the king hath delighted.’

Then Haman took the clothing and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and had him ride through the city square, and proclaimed before him, “Thus it shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!”

And Haman taketh the clothing, and the horse, and clothed Mordecai, and causeth him to ride in a broad place of the city, and calleth before him, ‘Thus it is done to the man in whose honour the king hath delighted.’

Esther said, “An adversary and an enemy, even this wicked Haman!” Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.

And Esther saith, ‘The man-adversary and enemy-is this wicked Haman;’ and Haman hath been afraid at the presence of the king and of the queen.

the Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, to lay hands on those who wanted to harm them. No one could withstand them, because the fear of them had fallen on all the people.

the Jews have been assembled in their cities, in all provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to put forth a hand on those seeking their evil, and no man hath stood in their presence, for their fear hath fallen on all the peoples.

For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces, for the man Mordecai grew greater and greater.

For Mordecai H4782 [was] great H1419 in the king’s H4428 house, H1004 and his fame H8089 went out H1980 (QalActPtc) throughout all the provinces: H4082 for this man H376 Mordecai H4782 waxed H1980 (QalActPtc) greater and greater. H1419

for great is Mordecai in the house of the king, and his fame is going into all the provinces, for the man Mordecai is going on and becoming great.

In the citadel of Susa, the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men.

And in Shushan H7800 the palace H1002 the Jews H3064 slew H2026 (QalPerf) and destroyed H6 (PielInf) five H2568 hundred H3967 men. H376

and in Shushan the palace have the Jews slain and destroyed five hundred men;

The king said to Esther the queen, “The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in the citadel of Susa, including the ten sons of Haman; what then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is your petition? It shall be granted you. What is your further request? It shall be done.”

And the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Esther H635 the queen, H4436 The Jews H3064 have slain H2026 (QalPerf) and destroyed H6 (PielInf) five H2568 hundred H3967 men H376 in Shushan H7800 the palace, H1002 and the ten H6235 sons H1121 of Haman; H2001 what have they done H6213 (QalPerf) in the rest H7605 of the king’s H4428 provinces? H4082 now what [is] thy petition? H7596 and it shall be granted H5414 (NiphImpf) thee: or what [is] thy request H1246 further? H5750 and it shall be done. H6213 (NiphImpf)

and the king saith to Esther the queen, ‘In Shushan the palace have the Jews slain and destroyed five hundred men, and the ten sons of Haman; in the rest of the provinces of the king what have they done? and what is thy petition? and it is given to thee; and what thy request again? and it is done.’

The Jews who were in Susa gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and killed three hundred men in Susa; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.

For the Jews H3064 that [were] in Shushan H7800 gathered themselves together H6950 (NiphImpf) on the fourteenth H702 H6240 day H3117 also of the month H2320 Adar, H143 and slew H2026 (QalImpf) three H7969 hundred H3967 men H376 at Shushan; H7800 but on the prey H961 they laid H7971 (QalPerf) not their hand. And the Jews who are in Shushan are assembled also on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar, and they slay in Shushan three hundred men, and on the prey they have not put forth their hand.

Therefore the Jews of the villages, who live in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, a holiday, and a day of sending presents of food to one another.

Therefore the Jews H3064 of the villages, H6521 that dwelt H3427 (QalActPtc) in the unwalled H6519 towns, H5892 made H6213 (QalActPtc) the fourteenth H702 H6240 day H3117 of the month H2320 Adar H143 [a day of] gladness H8057 and feasting, H4960 and a good H2896 day, H3117 and of sending H4916 portions H4490 one H376 to another. Therefore the Jews of the villages, who are dwelling in cities of the villages, are making the fourteenth day of the month of Adar-joy and banquet, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.

as the days in which the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned to them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending presents of food to one another, and gifts to the needy.

as days on which the Jews have rested from their enemies, and the month that hath been turned to them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning to a good day, to make them days of banquet and of joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the needy.

There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God,^§ and turned away from evil.

Job 1:1 The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).

There was a man H376 in the land H776 of Uz, H5780 whose name H8034 [was] Job; H347 and that man H376 was perfect H8535 and upright, H3477 and one that feared H3373 God, H430 and eschewed H5493 (QalActPtc) evil. H7451

A man there hath been in the land of Uz-Job his name-and that man hath been perfect and upright-both fearing God, and turning aside from evil.

His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Satan, H7854 Hast thou considered H7760 (QalPerf) H3820 my servant H5650 Job, H347 that [there is] none like him in the earth, H776 a perfect H8535 and an upright H3477 man, H376 one that feareth H3373 God, H430 and escheweth H5493 (QalActPtc) evil? H7451

And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, ‘Hast thou set thy heart against My servant Job because there is none like him in the land, a man perfect and upright, fearing God, and turning aside from evil?’

Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil. He still maintains his integrity, although you incited me against him, to ruin him without cause.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Satan, H7854 Hast thou H7760 (QalPerf) considered H3820 my servant H5650 Job, H347 that [there is] none like him in the earth, H776 a perfect H8535 and an upright H3477 man, H376 one that feareth H3373 God, H430 and escheweth H5493 (QalActPtc) evil? H7451 and still he holdeth fast H2388 (HiphPtc) his integrity, H8538 although thou movedst H5496 (HiphImpf) me against him, to destroy H1104 (PielInf) him without cause. H2600

And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, ‘Hast thou set thy heart unto My servant Job because there is none like him in the land, a man perfect and upright, fearing God and turning aside from evil? and still he is keeping hold on his integrity, and thou dost move Me against him to swallow him up for nought!’

Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “Skin for skin. Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life.

And Satan H7854 answered H6030 (QalImpf) the Lord, H3068 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Skin H5785 for skin, H5785 yea, all that a man H376 hath will he give H5414 (QalImpf) for his life. H5315

And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, ‘A skin for a skin, and all that a man hath he doth give for his life.

Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him.

Now when Job’s H347 three H7969 friends H7453 heard H8085 (QalImpf) of all this evil H7451 that was come H935 (QalActPtc) upon him, they came H935 (QalImpf) every one H376 from his own place; H4725 Eliphaz H464 the Temanite, H8489 and Bildad H1085 the Shuhite, H7747 and Zophar H6691 the Naamathite: H5284 for they had made an appointment H3259 (NiphImpf) together H3162 to come H935 (QalInf) to mourn H5110 (QalInf) with him and to comfort H5162 (PielInf) him.

And three of the friends of Job hear of all this evil that hath come upon him, and they come in each from his place-Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite-and they are met together to come in to bemoan him, and to comfort him;

When they lifted up their eyes from a distance, and didn’t recognize him, they raised their voices, and wept; and they each tore his robe, and sprinkled dust on their heads toward the sky.

And when they lifted up H5375 (QalImpf) their eyes H5869 afar off, H7350 and knew H5234 (HiphPerf) him not, they lifted up H5375 (QalImpf) their voice, H6963 and wept; H1058 (QalImpf) and they rent H7167 (QalImpf) every one H376 his mantle, H4598 and sprinkled H2236 (QalImpf) dust H6083 upon their heads H7218 toward heaven. and they lift up their eyes from afar and have not discerned him, and they lift up their voice and weep, and rend each his robe, and sprinkle dust on their heads-heavenward.

In thoughts from visions of the night, In the falling of deep sleep on men,

For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment.

But if a man like myself-I answer him, We come together into judgment.

“Shouldn’t the multitude of words be answered? Should a man full of talk be justified?

Is a multitude of words not answered? And is a man of lips justified?

An empty-headed man becomes wise when a man is born as a wild donkey’s colt.

For vain H5014 (QalPasPtc) man H376 would be wise, H3823 (NiphImpf) though man H120 be born H3205 (NiphImpf) [like] a wild ass’s H6501 colt. H5895

And empty man is bold, And the colt of a wild ass man is born.

in whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind?

In whose hand H3027 [is] the soul H5315 of every living thing, H2416 and the breath H7307 of all mankind. H376 H1320

In whose hand is the breath of every living thing, And the spirit of all flesh of man.’

Behold, he breaks down, and it can’t be built again. He imprisons a man, and there can be no release.

Behold, he breaketh down, H2040 (QalImpf) and it cannot be built again: H1129 (NiphImpf) he shutteth up H5462 (QalImpf) a man, H376 and there can be no opening. H6605 (NiphImpf)

Lo, He breaketh down, and it is not built up, He shutteth against a man, And it is not opened.

so man lies down and doesn’t rise. Until the heavens are no more, they will not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.

So man H376 lieth down, H7901 (QalPerf) and riseth H6965 (QalImpf) not: till the heavens H8064 [be] no more, H1115 they shall not awake, H6974 (HiphImpf) nor be raised out H5782 (NiphImpf) of their sleep. H8142

And man hath lain down, and riseth not, Till the wearing out of the heavens they awake not, Nor are roused from their sleep.

how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water!

How much more abominable H8581 (NiphPtc) and filthy H444 (NiphPtc) [is] man, H376 which drinketh H8354 (QalActPtc) iniquity H5766 (Qere) H5766 like water? H4325

Also-surely abominable and filthy Is man drinking as water perverseness.

But as for the mighty man, he had the earth. The honorable man, he lived in it.

But [as for] the mighty H2220 man, H376 he had the earth; H776 and the honourable man H5375 (QalPasPtc) H6440 dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) in it.

As to the man of arm-he hath the earth, And the accepted of face-he dwelleth in it.

oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!

Oh that H5414 (QalImpf) one would hear H8085 (QalActPtc) me! behold, my desire H8420 [is, that] the Almighty H7706 would answer H6030 (QalImpf) me, and [that] mine adversary H376 H7379 had written H3789 (QalPerf) a book. H5612

Who giveth to me a hearing? lo, my mark. The Mighty One doth answer me, And a bill hath mine adversary written.

So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

So these three H7969 men H582 ceased H7673 (QalImpf) to answer H6030 (QalInf) Job, H347 because he [was] righteous H6662 in his own eyes. H5869

And these three men cease from answering Job, for he is righteous in his own eyes,

When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, his wrath was kindled.

When Elihu H453 saw H7200 (QalImpf) that [there was] no answer H4617 in the mouth H6310 of [these] three H7969 men, H582 then his wrath H639 was kindled. H2734 (QalImpf)

And Elihu seeth that there is no answer in the mouth of the three men, and his anger burneth.

Beware lest you say, ‘We have found wisdom. God may refute him, not man;’

Lest ye should say, H559 (QalImpf) We have found out H4672 (QalPerf) wisdom: H2451 God H410 thrusteth him down, H5086 (QalImpf) not man. H376

Lest ye say, We have found wisdom, God doth thrust him away, not man.

Please don’t let me respect any man’s person, neither will I give flattering titles to any man.

Let me not, I pray you, accept H5375 (QalImpf) any man’s H376 person, H6440 neither let me give flattering titles H3655 (PielImpf) unto man. H120

Let me not, I pray you, accept the face of any, Nor unto man give flattering titles,

In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, in slumbering on the bed,

then he opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction,

Then He uncovereth the ear of men, And for their instruction sealeth:

He sings before men, and says, ‘I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it didn’t profit me.

who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men?

And he hath travelled for company With workers of iniquity, So as to go with men of wickedness.

“Therefore listen to me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness, from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.

Therefore hearken H8085 (QalImpv) unto me, ye men H582 of understanding: H3824 far be it H2486 from God, H410 [that he should do] wickedness; H7562 and [from] the Almighty, H7706 [that he should commit] iniquity. H5766

Therefore, O men of heart, hearken to me; Far be it from God to do wickedness, And from the Mighty to do perverseness:

For the work of a man he will render to him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.

For the work of man he repayeth to him, And according to the path of each He doth cause him to find.

“For his eyes are on the ways of a man. He sees all his goings.

For His eyes are on the ways of each, And all his steps He doth see.

For he doesn’t need to consider a man further, that he should go before God in judgment.
