και ειπεν αυτω τι σοι οτι συ ουτως ασθενης υιε του βασιλεως το πρωι πρωι ουκ απαγγελεις μοι και ειπεν αυτω αμνων θημαρ την αδελφην αβεσσαλωμ του αδελφου μου εγω αγαπω

So Amnon lay down and faked being sick. When the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.”

και εκοιμηθη αμνων και ηρρωστησεν και εισηλθεν ο βασιλευς ιδειν αυτον και ειπεν αμνων προς τον βασιλεα ελθετω δη θημαρ η αδελφη μου προς με και κολλυρισατω εν οφθαλμοις μου δυο κολλυριδας και φαγομαι εκ της χειρος αυτης

As for me, where would I carry my shame? And as for you, you will be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king; for he will not withhold me from you.”

και εγω που αποισω το ονειδος μου και συ εση ως εις των αφρονων εν ισραηλ και νυν λαλησον δη προς τον βασιλεα οτι ου μη κωλυση με απο σου

She had a garment of various colors on her, for the king’s daughters who were virgins dressed in such robes. Then his servant brought her out and bolted the door after her.

και επ αυτης ην χιτων καρπωτος οτι ουτως ενεδιδυσκοντο αι θυγατερες του βασιλεως αι παρθενοι τους επενδυτας αυτων και εξηγαγεν αυτην ο λειτουργος αυτου εξω και απεκλεισεν την θυραν οπισω αυτης

But when King David heard of all these things, he was very angry.

και εγενετο εις διετηριδα ημερων και ησαν κειροντες τω αβεσσαλωμ εν βελασωρ τη εχομενα εφραιμ και εκαλεσεν αβεσσαλωμ παντας τους υιους του βασιλεως

Absalom came to the king and said, “See now, your servant has sheep shearers. Please let the king and his servants go with your servant.”

και ηλθεν αβεσσαλωμ προς τον βασιλεα και ειπεν ιδου δη κειρουσιν τω δουλω σου πορευθητω δη ο βασιλευς και οι παιδες αυτου μετα του δουλου σου

The king said to Absalom, “No, my son, let’s not all go, lest we be burdensome to you.” He pressed him; however he would not go, but blessed him.

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς προς αβεσσαλωμ μη δη υιε μου μη πορευθωμεν παντες ημεις και ου μη καταβαρυνθωμεν επι σε και εβιασατο αυτον και ουκ ηθελησεν του πορευθηναι και ευλογησεν αυτον

Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us.” The king said to him, “Why should he go with you?”

και ειπεν αβεσσαλωμ και ει μη πορευθητω δη μεθ ημων αμνων ο αδελφος μου και ειπεν αυτω ο βασιλευς ινα τι πορευθη μετα σου

But Absalom pressed him, and he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.

But Absalom H53 pressed H6555 (QalImpf) him, that he let Amnon H550 and all the king’s H4428 sons H1121 go H7971 (QalImpf) with him.

The servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and every man got up on his mule and fled.

While they were on the way, the news came to David, saying, “Absalom has slain all the king’s sons, and there is not one of them left!”

Then the king arose, and tore his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes torn.

Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, answered, “Don’t let my lord suppose that they have killed all the young men, the king’s sons, for Amnon only is dead; for by the appointment of Absalom this has been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.

And Jonadab, H3122 the son H1121 of Shimeah H8093 David’s H1732 brother, H251 answered H6030 (QalImpf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) Let not my lord H113 suppose H559 (QalImpf) [that] they have slain H4191 (HiphPerf) all the young men H5288 the king’s H4428 sons; H1121 for Amnon H550 only is dead: H4191 (QalPerf) for by the appointment H6310 of Absalom H53 this hath been determined H7760 (QalPasPtc) from the day H3117 that he forced H6031 (PielInf) his sister H269 Tamar. και απεκριθη ιωναδαβ υιος σαμαα αδελφου δαυιδ και ειπεν μη ειπατω ο κυριος μου ο βασιλευς οτι παντα τα παιδαρια τους υιους του βασιλεως εθανατωσεν οτι αμνων μονωτατος απεθανεν οτι επι στοματος αβεσσαλωμ ην κειμενος απο της ημερας ης εταπεινωσεν θημαρ την αδελφην αυτου

Now therefore don’t let my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king’s sons are dead; for only Amnon is dead.”

Jonadab said to the king, “Behold, the king’s sons are coming! It is as your servant said.”

As soon as he had finished speaking, behold, the king’s sons came, and lifted up their voices and wept. The king also and all his servants wept bitterly.

και αβεσσαλωμ εφυγεν και επορευθη προς θολμαι υιον εμιουδ βασιλεα γεδσουρ εις γην μαχαδ και επενθησεν ο βασιλευς δαυιδ επι τον υιον αυτου πασας τας ημερας

King David longed to go out to Absalom, for he was comforted concerning Amnon, since he was dead.

And [the soul of] king H4428 David H1732 longed H3615 (PielImpf) to go forth H3318 (QalInf) unto Absalom: H53 for he was comforted H5162 (NiphPerf) concerning Amnon, H550 seeing he was dead. H4191 (QalPerf)

και εκοπασεν το πνευμα του βασιλεως του εξελθειν οπισω αβεσσαλωμ οτι παρεκληθη επι αμνων οτι απεθανεν

Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was toward Absalom.

και εγνω ιωαβ υιος σαρουιας οτι η καρδια του βασιλεως επι αβεσσαλωμ

Go in to the king and speak like this to him.” So Joab put the words in her mouth.

When the woman of Tekoa spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, showed respect, and said, “Help, O king!”

The king said to her, “What ails you?” She answered, “Truly I am a widow, and my husband is dead.

The king said to the woman, “Go to your house, and I will give a command concerning you.”

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς υγιαινουσα βαδιζε εις τον οικον σου καγω εντελουμαι περι σου

The woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord, O king, may the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house; and may the king and his throne be guiltless.”

And the woman H802 of Tekoah H8621 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the king, H4428 My lord, H113 O king, H4428 the iniquity H5771 [be] on me, and on my father’s H1 house: H1004 and the king H4428 and his throne H3678 [be] guiltless. H5355

και ειπεν η γυνη η θεκωιτις προς τον βασιλεα επ εμε κυριε μου βασιλευ η ανομια και επι τον οικον του πατρος μου και ο βασιλευς και ο θρονος αυτου αθωος

The king said, “Whoever says anything to you, bring him to me, and he will not bother you any more.”

And the king H4428 said, H559 (QalImpf) Whosoever saith H1696 (PielPtc) [ought] unto thee, bring H935 (HiphPerf) him to me, and he shall not touch H5060 (QalInf) thee any more. H3254 (HiphImpf)

Then she said, “Please let the king remember Yahweh your God, that the avenger of blood destroy not any more, lest they destroy my son.” He said, “As Yahweh lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the earth.”

και ειπεν μνημονευσατω δη ο βασιλευς τον κυριον θεον αυτου πληθυνθηναι αγχιστεα του αιματος του διαφθειραι και ου μη εξαρωσιν τον υιον μου και ειπεν ζη κυριος ει πεσειται απο της τριχος του υιου σου επι την γην

Then the woman said, “Please let your servant speak a word to my lord the king.” He said, “Say on.”

The woman said, “Why then have you devised such a thing against the people of God? For in speaking this word the king is as one who is guilty, in that the king does not bring home again his banished one.

And the woman H802 said, H559 (QalImpf) Wherefore then hast thou thought H2803 (QalPerf) such a thing against the people H5971 of God? H430 for the king H4428 doth speak H1696 (HithPtc) this thing H1697 as one which is faulty, H818 in that the king H4428 doth not fetch home again H7725 (HiphInf) his banished. H5080 (NiphPtc)

Now therefore, seeing that I have come to speak this word to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid. Your servant said, ‘I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.’

Now therefore that I am come H935 (QalPerf) to speak H1696 (PielInf) of this thing H1697 unto my lord H113 the king, H4428 [it is] because the people H5971 have made me afraid: H3372 (PielPerf) and thy handmaid H8198 said, H559 (QalImpf) I will now speak H1696 (PielImpf) unto the king; H4428 it may be that the king H4428 will perform H6213 (QalImpf) the request H1697 of his handmaid. και νυν ο ηλθον λαλησαι προς τον βασιλεα τον κυριον μου το ρημα τουτο οτι οψεται με ο λαος και ερει η δουλη σου λαλησατω δη προς τον βασιλεα ει πως ποιησει ο βασιλευς το ρημα της δουλης αυτου

For the king will hear, to deliver his servant out of the hand of the man who would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.

οτι ακουσει ο βασιλευς ρυσασθαι την δουλην αυτου εκ χειρος του ανδρος του ζητουντος εξαραι με και τον υιον μου απο κληρονομιας θεου

Then your servant said, ‘Please let the word of my lord the king bring rest; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad. May Yahweh, your God, be with you.’ ”

Then thine handmaid H8198 said, H559 (QalImpf) The word H1697 of my lord H113 the king H4428 shall now be comfortable: H4496 for as an angel H4397 of God, H430 so [is] my lord H113 the king H4428 to discern H8085 (QalInf) good H2896 and bad: H7451 therefore the Lord H3068 thy God H430 will be with thee.

Then the king answered the woman, “Please don’t hide anything from me that I ask you.” The woman said, “Let my lord the king now speak.”

και απεκριθη ο βασιλευς και ειπεν προς την γυναικα μη δη κρυψης απ εμου ρημα ο εγω επερωτω σε και ειπεν η γυνη λαλησατω δη ο κυριος μου ο βασιλευς

The king said, “Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?” The woman answered, “As your soul lives, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken; for your servant Joab urged me, and he put all these words in the mouth of your servant.

And the king H4428 said, H559 (QalImpf) [Is not] the hand H3027 of Joab H3097 with thee in all this? και ειπεν ο βασιλευς μη η χειρ ιωαβ εν παντι τουτω μετα σου και ειπεν η γυνη τω βασιλει ζη η ψυχη σου κυριε μου βασιλευ ει εστιν εις τα δεξια η εις τα αριστερα εκ παντων ων ελαλησεν ο κυριος μου ο βασιλευς οτι ο δουλος σου ιωαβ αυτος ενετειλατο μοι και αυτος εθετο εν τω στοματι της δουλης σου παντας τους λογους τουτους

The king said to Joab, “Behold now, I have granted this thing. Go therefore, and bring the young man Absalom back.”

And the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Joab, H3097 Behold now, I have done H6213 (QalPerf) this thing: H1697 go H3212 (QalImpv) therefore, bring H7725 the young man H5288 Absalom H53 again. H7725 (HiphImpv)

και ειπεν ο βασιλευς προς ιωαβ ιδου δη εποιησα σοι κατα τον λογον σου τουτον πορευου επιστρεψον το παιδαριον τον αβεσσαλωμ

Joab fell to the ground on his face, showed respect, and blessed the king. Joab said, “Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, my lord, O king, in that the king has performed the request of his servant.”

And Joab H3097 fell H5307 (QalImpf) to the ground H776 on his face, H6440 and bowed H7812 (HithImpf) himself, and thanked H1288 (PielImpf) the king: H4428 and Joab H3097 said, H559 (QalImpf) To day H3117 thy servant H5650 knoweth H3045 (QalPerf) that I have found H4672 (QalPerf) grace H2580 in thy sight, H5869 my lord, H113 O king, H4428 in that the king H4428 hath fulfilled H6213 (QalPerf) the request H1697 of his servant. H5650

και επεσεν ιωαβ επι προσωπον αυτου επι την γην και προσεκυνησεν και ευλογησεν τον βασιλεα και ειπεν ιωαβ σημερον εγνω ο δουλος σου οτι ευρον χαριν εν οφθαλμοις σου κυριε μου βασιλευ οτι εποιησεν ο κυριος μου ο βασιλευς τον λογον του δουλου αυτου

The king said, “Let him return to his own house, but let him not see my face.” So Absalom returned to his own house, and didn’t see the king’s face.

And the king H4428 said, H559 (QalImpf) Let him turn H5437 (NiphImpf) to his own house, H1004 and let him not see H7200 (QalImpf) my face. H6440 So Absalom H53 returned H5437 (NiphImpf) to his own house, H1004 and saw H7200 (QalPerf) not the king’s H4428 face. H6440

When he cut the hair of his head (now it was at every year’s end that he cut it; because it was heavy on him, therefore he cut it), he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels,° after the king’s weight.

2 Samuel 14:26 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces, so 200 shekels is about 2 kilograms or about 4.4 pounds.

Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem, and he didn’t see the king’s face.

So Absalom H53 dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) two full H3117 years H8141 in Jerusalem, H3389 and saw H7200 (QalPerf) not the king’s H4428 face. H6440

και εκαθισεν αβεσσαλωμ εν ιερουσαλημ δυο ετη ημερων και το προσωπον του βασιλεως ουκ ειδεν

Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king, but he would not come to him. Then he sent again a second time, but he would not come.

Absalom answered Joab, “Behold, I sent to you, saying, ‘Come here, that I may send you to the king, to say, “Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me to be there still. Now therefore, let me see the king’s face; and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.” ’ ”

So Joab came to the king and told him; and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king; and the king kissed Absalom.

Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate. When any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called to him, and said, “What city are you from?” He said, “Your servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.”

και ωρθρισεν αβεσσαλωμ και εστη ανα χειρα της οδου της πυλης και εγενετο πας ανηρ ω εγενετο κρισις ηλθεν προς τον βασιλεα εις κρισιν και εβοησεν προς αυτον αβεσσαλωμ και ελεγεν αυτω εκ ποιας πολεως συ ει και ειπεν ο ανηρ εκ μιας φυλων ισραηλ ο δουλος σου

Absalom said to him, “Behold, your matters are good and right; but there is no man deputized by the king to hear you.”

And Absalom H53 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, See, H7200 (QalImpv) thy matters H1697 [are] good H2896 and right; H5228 but [there is] no man [deputed] of the king H4428 to hear H8085 (QalActPtc) thee.

και ειπεν προς αυτον αβεσσαλωμ ιδου οι λογοι σου αγαθοι και ευκολοι και ακουων ουκ εστιν σοι παρα του βασιλεως

Absalom did this sort of thing to all Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

And on this manner H1697 did H6213 (QalImpf) Absalom H53 to all Israel H3478 that came H935 (QalImpf) to the king H4428 for judgment: H4941 so Absalom H53 stole H1589 (PielImpf) the hearts H3820 of the men H582 of Israel. H3478

και εποιησεν αβεσσαλωμ κατα το ρημα τουτο παντι ισραηλ τοις παραγινομενοις εις κρισιν προς τον βασιλεα και ιδιοποιειτο αβεσσαλωμ την καρδιαν ανδρων ισραηλ

At the end of forty years, Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to Yahweh, in Hebron.

And it came to pass after H7093 forty H705 years, H8141 that Absalom H53 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the king, H4428 I pray thee, let me go H3212 (QalImpf) and pay H7999 (PielImpf) my vow, H5088 which I have vowed H5087 (QalPerf) unto the Lord, H3068 in Hebron. H2275

και εγενετο απο τελους τεσσαρακοντα ετων και ειπεν αβεσσαλωμ προς τον πατερα αυτου πορευσομαι δη και αποτεισω τας ευχας μου ας ηυξαμην τω κυριω εν χεβρων

The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron.

And the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Go H3212 (QalImpv) in peace. H7965 So he arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and went H3212 (QalImpf) to Hebron. H2275

και ειπεν αυτω ο βασιλευς βαδιζε εις ειρηνην και αναστας επορευθη εις χεβρων

The king’s servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king chooses.”

And the king’s H4428 servants H5650 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the king, H4428 Behold, thy servants H5650 [are ready to do] whatsoever my lord H113 the king H4428 shall appoint. H977 (QalImpf)

και ειπον οι παιδες του βασιλεως προς τον βασιλεα κατα παντα οσα αιρειται ο κυριος ημων ο βασιλευς ιδου οι παιδες σου

The king went out, and all his household after him. The king left ten women, who were concubines, to keep the house.

And the king H4428 went forth, H3318 (QalImpf) and all his household H1004 after H7272 him. And the king H4428 left H5800 (QalImpf) ten H6235 women, H802 [which were] concubines, H6370 to keep H8104 (QalInf) the house. H1004

και εξηλθεν ο βασιλευς και πας ο οικος αυτου τοις ποσιν αυτων και αφηκεν ο βασιλευς δεκα γυναικας των παλλακων αυτου φυλασσειν τον οικον

The king went out, and all the people after him; and they stayed in Beth Merhak.

And the king H4428 went forth, H3318 (QalImpf) and all the people H5971 after H7272 him, and tarried H5975 (QalImpf) in a place H1004 that was far off. H4801 (QK) H1023
