‘And I take the heads of your tribes, men, wise and known, and I appoint them heads over you, princes of thousands, and princes of hundreds, and princes of fifties, and princes of tens, and authorities, for your tribes.

I commanded your judges at that time, saying, “Hear cases between your brothers and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the foreigner who is living with him.

And I command your judges at that time, saying, Hearkening between your brethren-then ye have judged righteousness between a man, and his brother, and his sojourner;

You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.”

ye do not discern faces in judgment; as the little so the great ye do hear; ye are not afraid of the face of any, for the judgment is God’s, and the thing which is too hard for you, ye bring near unto me, and I have heard it;

You came near to me, everyone of you, and said, “Let’s send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring back to us word of the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come.”

‘And ye come near unto me, all of you, and say, Let us send men before us, and they search for us the land, and they bring us back word concerning the way in which we go up into it, and the cities unto which we come in;

The thing pleased me well. I took twelve of your men, one man for every tribe.

“Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land which I swore to give to your fathers,

Not one of these men of this evil generation doth see the good land which I have sworn to give to your fathers,

Then you answered and said to me, “We have sinned against Yahweh. We will go up and fight, according to all that Yahweh our God commanded us.” Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into the hill country.

You shall consider in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so Yahweh your God disciplines you.

‘Ye do not do according to all that we are doing here to-day, each anything that is right in his own eyes,

certain wicked fellows have gone out from among you and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying, “Let’s go and serve other gods,” which you have not known,

Men, sons of worthlessness, have gone out of thy midst, and they force away the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known-

Every man shall give as he is able, according to Yahweh your God’s blessing which he has given you.

Every man H376 [shall give] as he is able, H4979 H3027 according to the blessing H1293 of the Lord H3068 thy God H430 which he hath given H5414 (QalPerf) thee.

each according to the gift of his hand, according to the blessing of Jehovah thy God, which He hath given to thee.

If there is found among you, within any of your gates which Yahweh your God gives you, a man or woman who does that which is evil in Yahweh your God’s sight in transgressing his covenant,

‘When there is found in thy midst, in one of thy cities which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee, a man or a woman who doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah thy God by transgressing His covenant,

then you shall bring out that man or that woman who has done this evil thing to your gates, even that same man or woman; and you shall stone them to death with stones.

Then shalt thou bring forth H3318 (HiphPerf) that man H376 or that woman, H802 which have committed H6213 (QalPerf) that wicked H7451 thing, H1697 unto thy gates, H8179 [even] that man H376 or that woman, H802 and shalt stone H5619 (QalPerf) them with stones, H68 till they die. H4191 (QalPerf)

‘Then thou hast brought out that man, or that woman, who hath done this evil thing, unto thy gates-the man or the woman-and thou hast stoned them with stones, and they have died.

The man who does presumptuously in not listening to the priest who stands to minister there before Yahweh your God, or to the judge, even that man shall die. You shall put away the evil from Israel.

And the man H376 that will do H6213 (QalImpf) presumptuously, H2087 and will not hearken H8085 (QalInf) unto the priest H3548 that standeth H5975 (QalActPtc) to minister H8334 (PielInf) there before the Lord H3068 thy God, H430 or unto the judge, H8199 (QalActPtc) even that man H376 shall die: H4191 (QalPerf) and thou shalt put away H1197 (PielPerf) the evil H7451 from Israel. And the man who acteth with presumption, so as not to hearken unto the priest (who is standing to serve there Jehovah thy God), or unto the judge, even that man hath died, and thou hast put away the evil thing from Israel,

you shall surely set him whom Yahweh your God chooses as king over yourselves. You shall set as king over you one from among your brothers. You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother.

thou dost certainly set over thee a king on whom Jehovah doth fix; from the midst of thy brethren thou dost set over thee a king; thou art not able to set over thee a stranger, who is not thy brother.

It shall happen, that whoever will not listen to my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

and it hath been-the man who doth not hearken unto My words which he doth speak in My name, I require it of him.

But if any man hates his neighbor, lies in wait for him, rises up against him, strikes him mortally so that he dies, and he flees into one of these cities;

If an unrighteous witness rises up against any man to testify against him of wrongdoing,

‘When a violent witness doth rise against a man, to testify against him apostasy,

then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before Yahweh, before the priests and the judges who shall be in those days;

The officers shall speak to the people, saying, “What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used its fruit? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use its fruit.

What man is there who has pledged to be married to a wife, and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.”

‘And who is the man that hath betrothed a woman, and hath not taken her?-let him go and turn back to his house, lest he die in battle, and another man take her.

The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, “What man is there who is fearful and faint-hearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brother’s heart melt as his heart.”

If a man has two wives, the one beloved and the other hated, and they have borne him children, both the beloved and the hated, and if the firstborn son is hers who was hated,

If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and though they chasten him, will not listen to them,

‘When a man hath a son apostatizing and rebellious-he is not hearkening to the voice of his father, and to the voice of his mother, and they have chastised him, and he doth not hearken unto them-

All the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones. So you shall remove the evil from among you. All Israel shall hear, and fear.

If a man has committed a sin worthy of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree,

‘And when there is in a man a sin-a cause of death, and he hath been put to death, and thou hast hanged him on a tree,

If any man takes a wife, and goes in to her, hates her,

‘When a man taketh a wife, and hath gone in unto her, and hated her,

The elders of that city shall take the man and chastise him.

‘And the elders of that city have taken the man, and chastise him,

then they shall bring out the young lady to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done folly in Israel, to play the prostitute in her father’s house. So you shall remove the evil from among you.

then they have brought out the damsel unto the opening of her father’s house, and stoned her have the men of her city with stones, and she hath died, for she hath done folly in Israel, to go a-whoring in her father’s house; and thou hast put away the evil thing out of thy midst.

If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then they shall both die, the man who lay with the woman and the woman. So you shall remove the evil from Israel.

‘When a man is found lying with a woman, married to a husband, then they have died even both of them, the man who is lying with the woman, also the woman; and thou hast put away the evil thing out of Israel.

If there is a young lady who is a virgin pledged to be married to a husband, and a man finds her in the city, and lies with her,

‘When there is a damsel, a virgin, betrothed to a man, and a man hath found her in a city, and lain with her;

then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones; the lady, because she didn’t cry, being in the city; and the man, because he has humbled his neighbor’s wife. So you shall remove the evil from among you.

But if the man finds the lady who is pledged to be married in the field, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die;

But if a man H376 find H4672 (QalImpf) a betrothed H781 (PualPtc) damsel H5291 in the field, H7704 and the man H376 force H2388 (HiphPerf) her, and lie H7901 (QalPerf) with her: then the man H376 only that lay H7901 (QalPerf) with her shall die: H4191 (QalPerf)

‘And if in a field the man find the damsel who is betrothed, and the man hath laid hold on her, and lain with her, then hath the man who hath lain with her died alone;

but to the lady you shall do nothing. There is in the lady no sin worthy of death; for as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter;

and to the damsel thou dost not do anything, the damsel hath no deadly sin; for as a man riseth against his neighbour and hath murdered him-the life, so is this thing;

If a man finds a lady who is a virgin, who is not pledged to be married, grabs her and lies with her, and they are found,

If a man H376 find H4672 (QalImpf) a damsel H5291 [that is] a virgin, H1330 which is not betrothed, H781 (PualPerf) and lay hold H8610 (QalPerf) on her, and lie H7901 (QalPerf) with her, and they be found; H4672 (NiphPerf)

‘When a man findeth a damsel, a virgin who is not betrothed, and hath caught her, and lain with her, and they have been found,

then the man who lay with her shall give to the lady’s father fifty shekels° of silver. She shall be his wife, because he has humbled her. He may not put her away all his days.

Deuteronomy 22:29 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces.

A man shall not take his father’s wife, and shall not uncover his father’s skirt.

‘A man doth not take his father’s wife, nor uncover his father’s skirt.

If there is among you any man who is not clean by reason of that which happens to him by night, then shall he go outside of the camp. He shall not come within the camp;
