[1] Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees, masons, and carpenters, to build him a house. [2] David perceived that Yahweh had established him king over Israel, for his kingdom was highly exalted, for his people Israel’s sake. [3] David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David became the father of more sons and daughters. [4] These are the names of the children whom he had in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, [5] Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, [6] Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, [7] Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet. [8] When the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went out against them. [9] Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the valley of Rephaim. [10] David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hand?”Yahweh said to him, “Go up; for I will deliver them into your hand.” [11] So they came up to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there. David said, God has broken my enemies by my hand, like waters breaking out. Therefore they called the name of that place Baal Perazim.ⓘ [12] They left their gods there; and David gave a command, and they were burned with fire. [13] The Philistines made another raid in the valley. [14] David inquired again of God; and God said to him, “You shall not go up after them. Turn away from them, and come on them opposite the mulberry trees. [15] When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then go out to battle; for God has gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.” [16] David did as God commanded him; and they attacked the army of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gezer. [17] The fame of David went out into all lands; and Yahweh brought the fear of him on all nations.
Footnotes
- “Baal Perazim” means “The Lord who breaks out”.

[9] And the PhilistinesH6430 cameH935(QalPerf) and spreadH6584(QalImpf) themselves in the valleyH6010 of Rephaim.H7497 [10] And DavidH1732 enquiredH7592(QalImpf) of God,H430 saying,H559(QalInf) Shall I go upH5927(QalImpf) against the Philistines?H6430 and wilt thou deliverH5414(QalPerf) them into mine hand?H3027 And the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Go up;H5927(QalImpv) for I will deliverH5414(QalPerf) them into thine hand.H3027 [11] So they came upH5927(QalImpf) to Baalperazim;H1188 and DavidH1732 smoteH5221(HiphImpf) them there. Then DavidH1732 said,H559(QalImpf) GodH430 hath broken inH6555(QalPerf) upon mine enemiesH341(QalActPtc) by mine handH3027 like the breaking forthH6556 of waters:H4325 therefore they calledH7121(QalPerf) the nameH8034 of that placeH4725 Baalperazim.H1188 [12] And when they had leftH5800(QalImpf) their godsH430 there, DavidH1732 gave a commandment,H559(QalImpf) and they were burnedH8313(NiphImpf) with fire.H784 [13] And the PhilistinesH6430 yet againH3254(HiphImpf) spread themselves abroadH6584(QalImpf) in the valley.H6010 [14] Therefore DavidH1732 enquiredH7592(QalImpf) again of God;H430 and GodH430 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Go not upH5927(QalImpf) afterH310 them; turn awayH5437(HiphImpv) from them, and comeH935(QalPerf) upon them over againstH4136 the mulberry trees.H1057 [15] And it shall be, when thou shalt hearH8085(QalInf) a soundH6963 of goingH6807 in the topsH7218 of the mulberry trees,H1057 [that] then thou shalt go outH3318(QalImpf) to battle:H4421 for GodH430 is gone forthH3318(QalPerf) beforeH6440 thee to smiteH5221(HiphInf) the hostH4264 of the Philistines.H6430 [16] DavidH1732 therefore didH6213(QalImpf) as GodH430 commandedH6680(PielPerf) him: and they smoteH5221(HiphImpf) the hostH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430 from GibeonH1391 even to Gazer.H1507 [17] And the fameH8034 of DavidH1732 went outH3318(QalImpf) into all lands;H776 and the LordH3068 broughtH5414(QalPerf) the fearH6343 of him upon all nations.H1471
